- Niniola, Wizkid, Burna Boy, Davido: In dance clubs around the world, musicians from Africa are stars. And no wonder - Afrobeats, which pairs West African musical elements with hip-hop, dancehall or house music, is great to dance to.
For the music industry, the global trend from Africa is rapidly turning into a goldmine - while amplifying the continent's cultural identity.
Initially completely apolitical, some Afrobeats artists have started to use their popularity to take a stand. After scandals involving police violence in Nigeria, for example, musicians defended the victims.
This film takes us on the road with notable Afrobeats artists. We visit their musical homeland, Nigeria, and also Kenya, where East African musical offshoots are forming.

Why are some Africans so concerned with what the West thinks of us? Who cares?
Abi, some Africans are too thirsty for western approval, it needs to change.
@@laifakumo8183 the western people came all the way to Nigeria & Africa to do this document I don't think we are the one that are thirsty lol
It matters what everyone thinks of us. We need everyone's money.

Fela Kuti is the only person who is a legendary of Afrobeat
@@mzee5533 He is legendary, he had strong political stance, and he was a pioneer.. I’m a 58 year old man of Caribbean background who recently started to watch music videos again, I love music so I have proper set up with large TV.. subs proper hifi speakers. So I’ve been streaming through RUclips. I did start the listening in my car, but never new what most of the artistes look like. Anyway let me get the point. To me these new artiste have a sound that I find enjoyable, Fela had a lot of Jazz influence I know Jazz was very big in his day. The music now has Jamaican influences of Ragga and Bashment , plus RNB soul and hip hop The difference African artiste are more refreshing to me, Jamaicans descend from Nigerians and Ghanaians and other Africans so the similarities are there. To me these young artiste give me pleasure everyday, I come home from work. The videos are works of art, I have background in media and have produced myself. African music videos have excelled beyond recognition. Big up to all the young lions and lionesses. The underlying narrative from the West must always be that Africa is a poor continent, but I am yet to see German music dominating the airwaves worldwide. Africa, by the way, is the world’s most richly blessed continent, the table from which much of the rest of the world has feasted for centuries. It is the continent with the world’s youngest population and is therefore, by definition, the continent of the future. Making a global impact with our music and our culture is just the beginning.
It's literally the ONLY thing.
@@allopez33 Actually it is not the only thing. Africa is resource rich. The continent will be taking over control of its resources in due course. The party will end and Africa will return to where it is supposed to be. The narrative of Africa as a poor continent is a European construct and it is false.
Burna Boy, a Nigerian artist, concert just sold out in the Netherlands. Even Europe embraces afrobeats
Africa is poor ! Resources don’t make you rich. They are just that! Resources.
@@harrybomaye Wrong! Africa is the most resource rich continent on the planet. The world's unfair economic system has made Africans poor, but the continent itself is rich. The poverty in Africa is man-made and it is within our power to reverse it. That Africa is poor is a false narrative, coined by those to whose benefit it was for the people of the continent to remain poor. Shame on you 😕
Davido is not a US/Nigerian superstar lol, He is a Nigerian superstar. That's it lol and thanks DW for showing only the bad places in Lagos and Kenya. This is why you got no real Afrobeat ''superstar''.
I don’t know much about Davido, is he is based and grew up in America maybe that how you describe him. Because where ever you live has a impact on you culturally. Eg The Nigerian Actor in Star Wars forgotten his name. He is often described as a British Nigerian. We can get uptight these naming, but we can also chill and stop picking holes because it’s a Western documentary. Maybe you right about locations shot, but I guess they love the narrative of rags to riches are they find it interesting how poor people use their talents. We don’t know the factors why some of the superstate were not present. Maybe it was hard to schedule them or they didn’t have any interest.. The doc was great for me..
Davido was born in the USA
@@historyonthego well said, great question, not everyone will be satisfied no matter your intent.
Davido is based in Nigeria and the doc is trash, he grew up in Nigeria.
The narrative of rags to riches distorts the history of Afrobeats, Fela who popularized afrobeats was from an affluent background, he was an elite. Afrobeats is for everyone, they clearly did not do any research, which is shamefully. Davido was born in the US but was raised in Nigeria, literally all his life.
Twenty years ago, I had a DVD of a Nigerian-made movie about a young orphaned woman who survived day-by-day, living in the forest by herself. The village people called her a witch. As poor as the acting was, the story was a good one and I still remember it. It gave me a fresh respect for Nigerians.

I am proud to have been a part of many people promoting the Afro beats. I got hooked in 2009 during the Psquare era with songs like Ifunanya, then came Yori yori with brackets, Flavor with Ashawo. @@connys.a2412 While I would gladly teach whoever cares to learn, I would add that the crux of this matter is for the media to become culturally sensitive and aware. Too often in the industry we find great stories like this narrated by someone who cannot pronounce African names. I have watched this whole documentary. Thank you DW for highlighting African music and Afrobeats in particular. However, I feel that you never really gone into how Afrobeats went global and what has made it global. There are many recent achievements that could have been mentioned. Even the fact that some Nigerian Afrobeats acts are at the moment holding record breaking and successful tours in America or even winning Grammy awards.
You could have also spoken to more artists (especially in Ghana while you were there) and music producers. The latter are the hit makers. The producer in studio with Skales is Krizbeatz there is no specific mention of his name and role in pushing the genre yet these are the engineers of Africa’s biggest Afrobeats tunes.
You could also inserted relevant songs to the topic in the documentary as some inserted like Niniola’s is Afro House / R&B music and even Skales’ inserted video clip is Amapiano sound - veering off topic. Yet Skales is a great Afrobeats artist and could actually be asked better questions as to the Genre’s development and some other artists who paved the way for him.
I also loved Octopizzo’s interview on point but the rest of the clips should have been another documentary all together. They weren’t relevant to the documentary. You could have tried to get more industry professionals to talk about the genre or it’s influence across Africa.
Your Ghana interview with Eazi was great and important, because he’s one of the Afrobeats stars from Nigeria who has kept a very close relationship with Ghana for many years. In fact at some point people outside Africa thought he was Ghanaian. However, you should have also spoken to other Ghanaian stars on the genre and industry.
I hope that you can do more research to make proper documentaries on African music. I am a music publicist and journalist based in Africa.
This is well pointed out...thank you for mention this Awoko!
My exact thoughts. Couldn't agree more. It is important to highlight that Africa is a whole continent with a mixture of sounds which we all take influence, drive creativity and inspiration from. The sound entails but not limited to, taking beats from south Africa, add a Ghanaian dance touch, and a najia tone to make the tune.
We acknowledge feats of the najia music industry but it is important to highlight that the culture is hugely diverse and each sound from specific parts of the continent contribute to the whole genre of afro-beats we have today. Hope such research is taken into account not to give an "unseasoned" narrative.
Africa as lots of potential and opportunities to become the next hub of music production and artists grooming given the right atmosphere and investments and curbing corruption has the potential to create millions of jobs for their young educated youths

If I could emit constructive criticism I would highly suggest that the next time you come up with a music documentary, insert the titles of the songs you add throughout the documentary, for instance when you introduced Niniola & Octopizzo to us, it would've been great for us to tune in with their music & discover the artists' music a bit more. That's an element you mustn't overlook when creating a documentary whose main focus is music !
Why did the Kenyan rapper guy sound so bitter towards Nigeria? "Nigeria is not Africa, Nigeria is a country". Pele, Uncle.
Bro, the hate is real. I just responded to someone making a comment about Amapiano while the topic is about Afrobeat…
Sound bitter, how?? I don't think so ur just imagining things...stop projecting.
@@moham.279 o
@@mauricestrokowsky9132, yes oooh. Lol
Where is the lie, Africa has soo much genres, in Kenya for instance, Rumba is more popular and Tanzania's bongo music.
And the Winner and Best Afro Beat Track 2021, " Everybody "
They should make an AMAPIANO version 👀👀👀piano to lefatshe ✊✊
Yebo lefatsheng siyabangena nomakanjani...HAIBOOO!!!!🔥🔥🙌👊🏾🇿🇦🇿🇦
Afrobeats is The Leading Sound Globally Today ❤️❤️❤️
No 🤣🤣
I'm so happy many racists in the comment section feel intimidated with our Afrobeat tune awwnnn 😊 we're fierce beware 🇳🇬
@Justin Divetta Why so bitter? 🤭🤣
@Justin Divetta, hahaha, you cared that’s why you made a bitter comment. Lol
@Justin Divetta, The opposite of your opinion is what others think about Afrobeat. Just as a reminder, millions adore and love Afrobeat with or without your opinion.
We are aware..........of just how unimportant your country is aside from what's under the soil.
Let them stay mad. Their generic pop music is boring and outdated.
S/O to Afro Beats & Amapiyano is a next big thing
The first artist(the woman artist in the beginning) is heavily influenced by South African afrohouse music, she’s not afrobeats I doubt that very much. Her one song was big here in SA, the Maradonna song & most ppl found it surprising it wasn’t a SAn artist who produced it…it sounds so SAn afrohouse. Interesting reportage but a bit all over the place as it confuses genres in Nigeria and the continent. Also not every music out of Nigeria is Afrobeats as per the first woman’s sound, she’s afrohouse which is mostly South African
That’s what I was thinking. Why not give South Africa credit, it’s obvious that that’s a South African Afro house.
@@theonly6359 it’s these DW reporters, they seem to be clueless westerners talking $hit about African $hit they know very little about. Should have had arts& culture journos from west Africa do this supposed afrobeats report for them
You guys really want to take credit for everything 🥴
Maradona is an afrobeat song, Nini is and has always been an afrobeat artiste
Where is all this coming from
There are lot of SA music that has become popular in Nigeria like Khona, Jerusalema and we gave them their due credit as being pure South African music
Why are you trying to make what is clearly a Nigerian song which she even sung in Yoruba about South Africa???
@@thandisilec835 I'm from Zambia, I agree. It's all over the place. Just use African journalists to cover these documentaries. In Zambia, we have Zamrock and Kalindula. And just like Congolease Rhumba, Afrohouse, Amapiano, Kwaito...those are their own genres from Afrobeat. We celebrating the richness of African cultures, and it's important to gets facts rights.
Maradona is an afrobeats song , keep deceiving yourself
LADY THAT FIRST COMMENT MAKES ME SO PROUD.BE BLESSED 🙌.
@0:47 that's Octopizzo talking 🇰🇪🇳🇬
Music going back to its roots
OCTOPIZZO (0.47) ALWAYS SPEAKING FACTS!!! HE SCHOOLED THESE GUYS HANDS DOWN 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽 The African JAY-Z!!!!!!!!!!! 👑
I wish you didn't compare him to an american artist. I wish you'd stopped typing after hands down. Americans copied everything from Africa. That's a FACT!!! Africa Unite!!! 💚💛❤
Never heard of him...he must be local in Kenya. He's wrong about Nigeria not having any big rappers...they do. There is Burna Boy, Olamide, Ladipoe, Ycee, Naira Marley, MI Abaga, Ice Prince, Slimcase, Zlatan, Phyno, and Reminisce are all famous Nigerian rappers that are known on the global scene.
@@blazinghot99 He DID actually say that Nigeria has rappers. Listen again.
@@kim1570 You should listen again. His exact words were "There's no big rappers in Nigeria". My point is, he is wrong. There are big rappers in Nigeria. All of the artists I named are big rappers in Nigeria. Many Kenyans are familiar with the rappers I listed. Ironically, all of the rappers I named are bigger than him on the global scene, yet he's unknown outside of Eastern Africa. Nigerians have no clue who he is...his songs do not penetrate our airwaves. I was in Kenya 2 years ago for a wedding and Nigerian music was blasted all over Kenyan radio, parties, events, and nightclubs. It sounded like he was hating. Lmao 😂😂😂✌
Can't believe I watched this 34 mins after it was posted.
Enjoyed it. 😀
We're glad you did! Thanks for watching. :-)
Nigeria is Africa, and Africa simply is Nigeria! Nigeria is semi US by civic standards and Nigeria edges over the US by deep knowledge penetration through books and cable satellites 📡.
Delusional FC. First off, the rest of us Africans didnt let our oppressors name our countries, neither did America. 🤡
Look at this nonsense
😂😂😂😂
Yes oooo 🤣🤣
Davido is a Nigerian superstar...
The documentary was awful with a plethora of misinformation.
"Afrohouse" isn't a mixture of "Afrobeats" & "House" for example. It's a South African Genre that has no relation to West Africa! Afrohouse Genres like Gqom, Amapiano & especially Kwaito are in fact even way older than the Genre that is now known as "Afrobeats" which in fact has nothing in common with the old "Afrobeat" Genre. Burna Boy who would have been a way more reliable guest for the Interview even hates the current usage & naming of the Genre as "Afrobeats" and calls the music "Afrofusion" simply because it incorporates different Genres & Rhythmns. Niniola calling herself or being referred to as "Queen of Afrohouse" is like calling a German Rap Artist "King of Hip Hop". It's simply ridiculous!
Teni is a vibe 🔥
The documentary should be the normal 42 minutes. 25 minutes is too short
Actually, the allotted time was too long for an inconsequential subject.
As an Edo boy that shirt oxlade is wearing I want it bad!! Anyone know where I can buy it?
Octopizzo 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
African has been exporting its music outside Africa way before afrobeats and they didn't even need to sing in English Angelique Kidjo, Youssou Ndour, Papa Wemba, Salif Keita, Alpha Blondy.... the road and the street were already laid Afrobeat didn't built it. Stop Nigeria washing the history of African music relationship with the World. Because African music reached Asia and South America, not just Europe et North America, way before Afrobeat became popular
Your comment is really out of place when you consider that Afobeats is quite recent. If you checked the comment section you'll see that everyone agrees the documentary is poorly done. Also “Nigerian washing”???? This idea that Nigerians are trying to make themselves the voice of Africa only is quite odd and out of place! No sane person believes Nigerians were the first on the scene.
Cry today, cry tomorrow
Keep on crying 😂
No African genre has come this close to global recognition like Nigerian Afrobeats.
No African musician has reached global fame outside Fela Kuti, as Nigerian musicians.
Afrobeats is called a phenomenon for a reason. Go and check out the number of documentaries on Afrobeat and Afrobeats on RUclips, no African genre comes close.
Check out the number of streams, the number of awards, how stadiums are shut down globally.
How they always sneak in negative storyline in positive African stories. We need to stop these outsiders telling our story
🇳🇬🇳🇬 is the power huz for African no doubt
Afrobeat DOC Without the king wizkid and Davido cap
Niniola is my favourite but she is a super star
Can't believe y'all didn't go to Angola 🇦🇴 and include Kuduro
its about Naija's afrobeats. Kuduro is a whole different genre and its very early to mid 2000s. no longer current
Always want to jump on any positive Nigerian train
Need one for Amapiano now 🇿🇦
Makanaki ooo😂😂. No stop Makanaki abeg ooo
