📍 Raymond Burr’s early acting career has been featured on Broadway, radio, television and film, usually as a villain. In the thriller Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window, the suspect is the most well-known film role, although he is also remembered for his role in the 1956 film Godzilla, King of Monsters, which he repeated in the 1985 film Godzilla 1985. In 1959 and 1961, he won an Emmy Award for his acting role as Perry Mason, which he played for nine seasons (1957-1966). But there is a secret life he created...let's find out why?

Thank you! 🙂
I've watched a few of your videos which while interesting, are extremely repetitive. You say the same thing three or four times! I think you should either write a script and stay with it or do some editing.
Thanks for the advise, I try to work on that! 😉

The narrator is fake and repeats facts at least twice in every video. Crap
Didn't even know Raymond Burr was Gay
I couldn't care less about his personal life. He was a damn good actor and I'm still watching him to this day.
I’ve been binging Perry Mason these last few days. Reminds me of the good ole’ days when movies and TV were, shall-we-say, wholesome.
Love PM, Drake, Della, even Tragg & Burger! What great chemistry with this group & no smut! Love Raymond Burr! Watch this every Monday thru Friday night. Such a classy show compared to the trashy crap shown nowadays.

Me too
That's all very well & good, but the fact remains that Burr's homosexuality would have just murdered his career had it been revealed full stop. Being gay meant being closeted & being closeted meant living with your own sword of Damocles over your head, always looking over your shoulder & wondering: "Is today the day who & what I really am is revealed & everything I've worked for is taken away from me & I'm reduced to the status of a pariah? Some Unclean Thing?"
Those were the stakes. Too many of Burr's fans would've turned on him & reduced him to poverty & obscurity if they'd known.
I didn't know he was a veteran, much less a heavily wounded combat vet. He seemed like a good man, adopting foster children and giving much of his salary to the USO and other organizations. Great actor, I liked to watch him playing gangster roles as well as the Perry Mason and Ironside series. His personal life should be just that - personal.
That's just it: he lied about being a vet. He was never in any of the armed services. He acted during the war, traveled the country, performing in places like Denver, at the Elitch Theatre. (It's the primary reason they did so many of the Mason movies there; he had friends from those days in Denver). He performed in one short-lived show on Broadway in NY in 1944. He did radio work. Like a lot of performers who weren't in the military, he joined with others to raise money for the war by doing War Bond tours. However, his insecurities always seemed to lead him to tell untrue stories. He never could bring himself to say he didn't serve during the war.
I admired him and never cared what his personal life was like. It is sad how actors were treated in Hollywood. I hope he is at peace now
I loved him as an actor. It didn’t matter to me if he was gay or straight, he was a great actor.
❤❤
That voice, that gravitas. What an actor he was. One of those that you couldn't take your eyes off if he entered a room or a stage. Great video, thank you.
I was his sisters nurse and her friend . I got to meet him and he was a nice man. He thanked me for everything I did for her . She use to talk about him all the time . She had almost ever inch of the walls covered in his picture's . I know she knew about his life but she tried to keep the fake life going by telling me all about it . But later on she told me the truth after he passed away . I have always kept that to myself . She is in heaven now . I will never forget her and she was his biggest fan . Love you Geraldine.
Aw, my deepest condolences on your loss. Nurses are awesome and to also be a good and loyal friend to the person you're caring for is very special. Thank you for that even though I don't know you. It was very nice that you were there to help her through her loss as well. Your story touched me. I hope you are doing well. Wishing you all the best ☺🌹
@Annette Johnson No, both people are long dead and the info about Mr. Burr is public knowledge. The commenter broke no professional ethics/statutes.
I would be interested in what she told you about their parents. A coincidence that his father was in the military, lived in China (doing what?) and Raymond was in the military in counterintelligence conveniently before becoming an actor? Hollywood was/is a propaganda machine. I don't believe that this story is telling us the whole story. My guess his life was a role as an actor called Perry Mason and a military puppet in his real life. Another actor that conveniently had all these tragedies including a child that died. The American public is still star-struck, by the Hollywood stories. Even this narrator says as much.
@Annette Johnson judging is your drug.....
You confirm on social media what was told to you in private by a friend. What value did you get out of doing this? I do not believe you kept this information confidential while Mr. Burr and his sister were alive.
I never thought of him being gay but I really don't care because that was his life. I think he was a fantastic actor and that's all that matters to me
My thoughts exactly. I always liked him as a actor and never once wondered if he was gay or straight, because that didn't matter. For one I didn't care about his life, it was his business and second all I cared about was his acting.

I never knew of Burr’s private life until 2021, a few months before this video was published (I was searching for his spouse). His acting career is what I’ve always known of him and learning about his private life does not change my opinion of him. He gave the world what he owed it, his gift of acting. He was one of the best actors of all time and that’s how he should be remembered.
I loved perry Mason shows omgness classics..🥰

I'm glad to know Raymond had a long and apparently happy relationship. He was a kind and generous man, and I'm certain that had a lot to do with his ability to keep his private life private. Just like in the rest of society, when a celebrity is an asshole, the people they've been mean to are all to eager to see them fall. But when a celebrity is known for their kindness and generosity, the people who know enough to ruin them are more likely to keep that celebrity's secret.
Very well said all people should realize that if you treat people well they hopefully will treat you well in return take note Meghan and Harry but it's too late for them they can't or won't change
It's so sad that people have to hide and even lie about who they love. Why can't everyone just live the one life they have instead of judging others?
@Laura Troxel Amen, sister.
Perhaps you are fairly young and unaware of the reasons people had to live a lie. During those decades, if any man were to admit to being homosexual, it would result in immediate imprisonment. Furthermore, after court hearings and full prosecutions, many of these men were involuntarily committed to insane asylums; where they would be subjected to heinous and grotesque medical experimentation. Additionally, simply being suspected of being 'Gay' or knowing someone who was guilty of being Gay often resulted in arrest. It was absolutely ILLEGAL to be gay, BY LAW in the U.S.! Even into the 1970's!
Because it's against God's law and just look around. Well, get your nose in a Bible. Your eyes will be opened. God promised that if we obey His Laws and Statutes He would give us rain in due season and we would have so much abundance that we would not have any place for it BUT if we don't He said....I'll curse you with a curse, you'll have famine, disease, death and if you STILL don't harken unto my voice your dead bodies will pile up. I'm paraphrasing but this is what my Bible says. The reason is not because God is cruel. Quite the contrary. He KNOWS that if we continue our way of life it will bring ONLY death and destruction. Why can't you people understand God's language? What is it that keeps you all from understanding?
@@jeankeats3200 More schismatic blabberings. I do wish there was a clause in the social media T&C's that obliged religious zealots to state which version of the bible they're quoting, so we can all grasp which particular corner of heaven they're presumably broadcasting from, and treat them accordingly. Another day, another dogma - it's getting very tiring.
@@mcmanpa Your filthy ways are getting tiring to us decent people too.
A good man, and a good American. Given that he was so philanthropic and generous with his friends says it all of his character. His personal life was his business and he certainly had much more discretion than most of who Hollywood has given us.
And a good Canadian !
All you comments are true!!! 🙄🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
He had to because he would've been fired and never worked again if he was found out. That's the point. The FBI investigated people for being gay geezus that's the point.
I agree, Dave. I believe it would be better if we could just enjoy celebrities' work and any good they contribute to society. All this endless gossip about private lives has contributed to creating a society in which nothing is private, and the general opinion is everything is everybody's business.
You say he had more "discretion" so it sounds like you appreciate his hiding his truth. So you won't feel uncomfortable? It was society that felt homosexuality was "wrong" or "unnatural" and should be hidden or live a LIE. God created all kinds of human sexuality and it's all good.
I grew up watching Raymond Burr he was a good actor. He deserved to be happy, his private life was his business. I wish he could have been able to just be open but society wouldn't let him back then.
I just I think Raymond Burr mind his own business and that's okay he didn't want to be mock.... He want it to respect the public and not disrespect anyone...

God will not curse ppl who are against homosexuality. Because God himself is against homosexuality. I have found at least 7 places in the Bible that speak against it. But this one should be enough:
Leviticus 18:22
22 You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination

By the end of his life he was morbidly obese w a bad back and kinda did need a wheelchair but he was a great actor.
I suspect his legs went bad, either from arthritis or a genetic problem. And Ironside was created to allow him to make another series. He wasn't harming anyone that I'm aware of. He lived life, paid his bills, created and grew remarkable flowers, seemed to be genuinely liked by people he worked with, and kept to himself. It would behoove some celebrities to take a page from Raymond's book and do the same.
Absolutely
Just how much concern should we have for the welfare of the 20-25 foster children he took in? That's his private sex life, not our business, correct?
@@mikediamond353 all I can say is WOW!! Because he kept his life personal and wasn't part of scandals to keep his career going. Like so many out of work actors do, so they can stay famous. Instead of just being good at their jobs like he was. Also if I remember correctly he continued working as long as he wanted too. Because he was good at his job. You decided he had to be perverted. Since he helped children that needed help. Well seems like you had to be wrong or it would have surfaced by now. I hope you feel ashamed for your sorry disgusting mind. A person is not a pervert because they are gay. Believe it or not they are human like the rest of the world. I find that because of people that think like that. Gay people tend to be a better quality of person than most. Because they have a better since of humanity and understanding. More people should follow their lead.
A few logical inconsistencies. He worked as long as he wanted, because he was good at his job. It would have surfaced by now. (Gays) have a better sense of humanity. I ask you: why defend him? You have conflated Burr with Perry Mason. He was hired, celebrated, deified, protected; BECAUSE he was Gay. Hollywood. You have lived a sheltered life.
@@mikediamond353 I ask you. What rock have tou been living under? It wasn't until the 1990's that people didn't really care what your sexual preference is. Actors have had to fake marriages so they could keep working. Studios would make them date other celebrities at the same company to keep them popular. I personally think it's horrible what studio executives would make them do just to get work. If I'm not mistaken even Judy Garland from the Wizard of Oz had to perform on casting couches to continue working. The star of one of the most iconic children's movies wasn't exempt from such unbelievable sexual harassment. The one thing I am ashamed of is that "we the people" didn't stop watching the shows and movie's put out by these company's. Like when the sexual harassment at Hooters came out that company lost a lot business. Yes I am guilty of continuing watch all of the shows and movie's. There should have been some kind of reprimand of the studios to pay actors that were sexually harassed. Maybe they would not have died poor like so many did.

Millions of fans adore him.
G..a little bird came along and tell you.
Dreamy
I don't think I realized it
Well big actors like Kirk Douglas, Marlon Brando, Richard Pryor, we're gay...
I wish some of the current 'celebrities' kept their private lives a secret.
I have to agree with you!!!
I agree as well!!!!!!
Why? Love is love, they deserve to live their lives openly.
Why did you have to say that when was trying to drink my coffee? What a mess!
Their private AND public lives!
Never judge a book by its cover. Great actor. I luv'd Perry mason my favourite. May he rest in peace 🕊️ from UK 🇬🇧👍👍
I loved Raymond Burr. It’s such a shame that men and women had to hide their sexuality, I loved his show’s I didn’t care who he slept with, it was none of my business. Even today studio’s try to hide sexual preferences. He was a fantastic person with a long list of acting career, he was great in Rear Window.
Teresa, not just sexuality. some of us have to either be vague or hide our ethnicity. Even in 2021 . i could always related to anyone hiding a part of their genetic identity since I am biracial and usually most people can't tell at all.
He was truly terrifying in Rear Window. I can still see him looking up and realizing that directly across people could see what he did! Scared the crap out of me and I can see him looking up and realizing it in his mind, then…oh NO ..he’s COMING….‼️
It is so unfortunate that actors, such as Burr, felt the need to hide the fact that they were born Canadian. Thank goodness times have changed!
Lol!
LOL!
LOL!
Good one!😂😂
I don't hear this Canadian laughing.
He was certainly no slouch. He lived a very pro-active useful life.
Indubitably !
Brilliant with his hobbies and talents too.
@@32mybelle How right you are ! :-)
His years of entertaining me through TV AND FILMS IS ALL I CARE ABOUT
Raymond burr was in the movie, a place in the Sun with Elizabeth Taylor.
It's so unfair that he had to choose either an open life just being himself, or Fame and Fortune acting. I still watch a Perry Mason show occasionally. He was so convincing in the part. I'm glad at least that he had a solid relationship in his private life. I also didn't know what a responsible person he was from his Naval Service to his Philanthropy. An outstanding Human Being that sadly had to hide in an Era that was unaccepting of that one small thing that didn't even define him. Thanks for the video.
I've always heard that he was incredibly private, and now I know why. He certainly never showed his true nature, and always came across as hyper masculine. I remember his deep bass voice and solid stern manner were very convincing.
It is possible to be gay and masculine. He did have a wonderful voice. I grew up watching Perry Mason. The re runs are still most enjoyable.
@@stephenwilliams1269 Of course it is. @Patrick Moorman is a dim wit.
@@archraskal lol! @ dimwit ha ha ha
I first saw Raymond Burr in his role as reporter Steve Martin in "Godzilla", when I was just a kid. He left an indelible impression on me. When he became Perry Mason, that was even more impressive. Ironside wasn't bad, but by then I was more into the Bionic Woman. Nowadays, I'm rediscovering Perry Mason on METV in NYC, where he's shown every weeknight at eleven and mornings at nine. The only villainous role I saw him in was as the murderous husband in "Rear Window", but that was certainly memorable! I'm sorry he had to live a lie in order to be left in peace by the star makers and gossip mongers, but homosexuality simply wasn't understood very well back then. We're supposed to be more enlightened now, but there's still a great deal of prejudice directed toward LBGTQ people in show business, as well as in other spheres. All I can say is, good night, Mr. Burr, wherever you are, and thanks for all the courtroom drama as Perry Mason, as well as all your other roles.
He also had a small part in the Marx Bros. Last movie, "Love Happy.".
The American version of Godzilla was my favorite film when I was a kid. I watched it every time it came on T.V. even when it played every night of the week. I was obsessed. Lol.
Who gives a damn about a person's sexuality??? IT'S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS!!!
Well, back then, they thought you should keep it that way! (Their ' business').
Now, they MAKE it your business!
I still watch Perry Mason, my 91 year old mother still has a crush on him. I will not ruin her fantasy . Glad he found love throughout those bigoted years. Thank you for his great story
Your mother is a big girl. Show her this video. She probably realizes that she's a fangirl and she's indulging in a fantasy.
They talk about his weight stryggles, but it never occurred to me that he was fat. He was what I think of as a "fine figure" of a man. His body suited him.
I always loved his Beautiful Eyes 😌
His beautiful eyes can put you in a trance.
I am new to your channel and really enjoy it. I only recently learned of Raymond Burr's lifestyle. I grew up watching both of the shows on TV.
Barbara Hale, who played Della Street on the Mason series, is laying in an unmarked grave next to her husband William Katt who's grave is marked. He was best remembered as Kit Carson in the TV show "The Adventures of Kit Carson". He was also on "Date With the Angels" with Betty White. Their son is William Katt who played the title role in "America's Greatest Hero" for three years. It's way past time for her son to have a marker placed on his mothers "unmarked" grave.
@ Believing in an almighty spirit is a choice as is how you want your final remains taken care of. We are all different, and that's good. I found out about her unmarked grave through "famous grave tours". The poster made a big deal of it and I agree with him. She obviously had her husbands grave marked, he passed years before her. She obviously believes in marking a grave. Her grave should therefor be marked.
What stunning photographs. Thank you so much for the video.
Life is hard enough when you live openly. I couldn’t imagine what he must’ve been through to keep everything under wraps.
I met Raymond Burr when I was 12 years old. My family and I were vacationing at Coco Palms, a hotel on the island of Kauai. We met at a party and I whispered to my mother that Mr. Burr looked much younger in person than he did on TV. She told him what I'd said and he smiled at me and said, "Ah! Out of the mouths of babes!" That was 56 years ago and I still remember it vividly.
Mr. Burr was an amazing talent!!! I had the honor of working on a couple of the made for TV Perry Mason movies filmed in Denver in 1980's. ( late) 1980's, while I was attending Community college of Denver. It was wonderful to watch first hand. All the talented people.
Great actor, activist, and philanthropist. What he did in his bedroom was his business.
War hero as well!
@@rbffbvs ,God Bless our Veterans!
Right! Who cares. We knew this on the 70’s. Nothing special
I wonder if the foster children would be open to an interview about that bedroom
A 30 year relationship is so much more than a 'bedroom.'
Perry and Paul were 2 gorgeous hunks.
The gay hunks were always gorgeous.
Paul who????
His private detective on Perry Mason.
Nasty
@@rickpendergrass9302 yes it's grosssss
Never in a million years would have thought Burr was homosexual. Seeing his pictures as a young man makes me long for my own youth, too! He was gorgeous.
remember when you first understood the meaning of "You can't tell a book by its cover?"
An offensive lineman from the Champion '85 Bears team was in O'Hare airport and Mr. Burr was kind enough to offer him a job as a gardener on his property in California, free room and board!
What a truly generous man!
Why would a millionaire football player from the Bears want a job as Raymond Burr's gardener?
I found out he was gay a number of years back. I didnt need to know. Very understandable why he and many others kept that part of their life from the public gaze. Just the way it was...and to a point..still is.
I don't need or have to know someone's sexuality. I pay them to see them perform , that's all.
Non of these 2 guys looks like Raymond. I saw in an interview on TV, back in the 80s. He said "I have never denied my sexuality." I admired him even more for staying true 👍 who he is , regardless of what the stigma in Hollywood were at the time...😎
Handsome, great actor and generous personality, he had it all. His personal life is his matter and i love IRONSIDE, lovely eyes RIP.
Whatever his sexual orientation, he was a wonderful actor, & sooo handsome. RIP
He had a nephew named Artie Burr who managed a Jiffy Lube in Sacramento, CA. A friend of mine worked there and I doubted the story until I saw him in person one day. He was a dead-ringer to his Uncle they were nearly identical, but Artie was much shorter.
Did artie have anything to say about his famous uncle?
@@harperstacey9604 I believe you've been told a story. Among the 11 offspring of his brother and sister, there is no Artie or Arthur.
I am glad he was not "outed" , but what a shame he had to live in the closet for all his life. Things are changing in that regard, and it is long overdue! His work speaks for itself. I still enjoy his performances in films, and on television.
Even if it were in the now, Raymond would have shied away from the spotlight. He wasn't an activist.
I watch Perry Mason twice a day in reruns. I've known for several years that he was gay. Doesn't matter to me.
He was a very good actor.
His private life was his business, not mine
I knew about Raymond Burr being gay for about 30 years. I remember that his partner and him owned an island in the South Pacific, where they lived, and later operated their California vineyard.
I think his partner is still living as of 4/21.
Very tastefully done , kudo's.He was a great actor
He had a prolific radio career as well. Great actor. That's all I care about his life.
He gave us great performances on Perry Mason and Ironside.
What a lovely man. I listen to the Perry Mason show every night. He brought such depth and compassion to the character.
Love Perry Mason watching today ☺️
Best damn show EVER!!
I watch too.I work nights, and come home and watch to just relax!!!'. I watched as a child with my family! Such wonderful memories,.hence maybe able to relax (family memories) I watch every night until I fall asleep! My best friend does the same!!
Who Cares if he was gay or straight??? A Great Actor & A Very Nice man!
Raymond Burr was one of my Favorite Old time Male Actors. Good looking Man he was. RIP Raymond Burr.
One of my great aunts was a big Perry Mason fan, and I got into the show as a kid because of her. Burr was a gifted and prolific actor, and even more importantly, a kind, decent and generous man. He was human, with the same human fears and frailties that we all have. But he gave us much to enjoy and to remember him by, and he certainly left the world a little bit better than he found it.
Raymond burr has million of fans that love him and don't care about his private business.
Raymond Burr was a great actor. He kept his personal life to himself because it was then as now no one's business but his.
