I started drawing with a sketchbook from Walmart for 3 dollars... it was really thin paper and I used just an hb pencil from school... but I still beleive that that sketchbook is so valuable because it was what really sparked my love for art and creativity in general... just thought that I would share that... and I love your videos!
I don't understand why good artists always apologize for longer videos! From a viewer and beginner artist's perspective, in depth videos are GREAT! I love when you have longer vids Fran, because I like to hear how you overcome your own insecurities, and especially the thought processes behind your art and the supplies you use. Please keep it up! :)
I am so happy to share this quirk with someone, finally...! My shelf is full of sketchbooks I still haven't used yet... but I am still buying more and more -___- (my working place neighbours are Muji, which doesn't help)
Don't apologize for the tips and the length of those. That's the thing that make me hooked on your channel and sent me into a bingewatching rampage on everything you've produce. You are insightful and awesome, helpful and kind. I love you in spanish, in english, by yourself, with hubby, color talk, paper talk, art supplies talk, vegan cooking (coming from a carnivore) you just rock super hard!!!! Keep it going Fran
I dont know who told you that you talk so much but talk as much as you like. It's what i love about your videos and another youtuber who is actually a make up vlogger (two of my favorite things art and beauty
I adore that your details are long and detailed and informative. I feel like I'm learning things, but in a really fun way. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience!
I have a confession. I couldn't focus on what you were saying because I was mesmerized by how cute you look. Love the ensemble, the hair, the glasses and those eyes.
Fran aka Goddess! DO NOT EVER STOP TALKING! I love watching your videos! Heck! I started exposing my art because of you! Also..I am guilty as charged! I am obsessed with sketchbooks! I can never save up enough to get some stuff that i actually need. Because I always end up spending everything on paper and sketchbook
Please continue making longer videos! I thought I was the only one going around and touching paper 😂 I have to feel it before i buy it. Hate it when the store lefts all the sketchbooks sealed in plastic
I had a friend of mine stitched an artesanal sketchbook for me using marker paper from copic brand, so I finnaly got a sketchbook with paper that doesn't bleed! well if you know someone that make artesanal sketchbooks thats a good idea for using your copics =)
Fran, if you want to try some paper that makes inks look amazing then you need to try Tomoe River Paper. It's ridiculously thin, but it really makes inks look beautiful.
I'm always happy whenever you show tour sketchbooks. they are always so inspiring so I really love videos like this. thank you so much for all the advices and reviews!! I don't mind the length of your videos. please keep up the great work!!
This video is a life safer, thank you Fran for doing all the research for us! I am currently using a Moleskine A5 sketchbook and I also love the seize of it. Next time I am at Boesner I have to check out some of the other options. I just started my sketchbook journey.
As nice it is to learn from your videos, I particularly enjoy the videos you make of your travels around the city, visiting museums and places like that. :)
This was so helpful Fran! I'm travelling to America in a couple of months and have been racking my brains trying to decide on what sort of sketchbook to buy! Thank you!!
you say "Leutturm" so sweet. I have stopped drawing. And now I regret it terribly. You are so in love with your job. I start to drawing again. good work ..
I have to admit, i always draw while listening to your videos and it's so nice and peaceful to hear you, and the longer your videos are, the happier i am ! xD
I think a few people have recommended the Rendr sketchbooks already, and I can confirm that they're great to work with!! The paper is very thick and smooth, but they have an odd sort of feel to them I can't really describe. It takes some getting used to, but it's worth it!! Nothing bleeds through at ALL!!
Hi Fran. I have used the Ogami notebook. It is amazing to write with a pen in it and even ink. It feels like the paper is grabbing the nib and at the same time it writes very smoothly. The other day I used sepia ink to write and something surprising happened. The ink was not brown, it was black, and drying light grey, and the areas with more pigments are green. So I thought it was interesting when you said the color was reacting in a strange way. I think writing in Ogami notebooks is a great experience though! I love what you do, ilu & videos!
Aaaah paper love. I totally get your feelings! I love feeling paper into my hands, the weight of it, I hate digital publications because a beautiful book is something amazing and reading doesn't have the same charm when it's on a screen :)
Fran, Midori actually makes covers for that those books but they are leather. Depending on what size you got A5 or A6 you could also get a cute hobonichi cover. People even make some on etsy and most are non leather. Loved the video!
Girl, I'm 45 years old and have been a paper sniffer from WAY WAY back! I'm new to sketching and art, but I've been sniffing books and magazines since I was a young girl. My mother got me hooked. It's a thing. Really. Now that I'm drawing I'm all about touching all the paper to find the exact right paper to draw on. It's making me crazy!!
Stay awesome Fran!
Thank you for this video! About the stone paper notebook, I think they are supposed to be water-resistant, so that might explain why your markers look weird... Love your videos
Omg I love your long videos Fran!! If you upload a short video, I always felt like "why so short???!!!!" I have the midori but still haven't got the special occasion to use it!! Now I'm very excited!!! I think you can totally diy a hard cover for the midori, it's super easy!
About the Midori book, its really common here in Japan to have reusable covers you insert notebooks into so you often find nice quality sketchbooks in more delicate binding cause they assume you'll put a cover on it or its a throwaway kind of book. Sometimes Midori sells clear plastic covers for their notebooks but I don't always see them or if they provide them internationally. I know Etsy has a lot of vendors that do really beautify reusable covers to standard sizes and I'm sure a lot of them will do custom sizes. I hope that's helpful to anyone I know this is a little late to be commenting lol. Thanks for the video I'd never heard of limestone paper before, that's really neat.
Oh. my. God. I can relate I haven't been really obsessed with sketchbooks but lately I've inspired and now I'm officially obsessed! love your videos keep em' coming, these videos are very inspiring 😊
I love stone paper, Boesner sells it. Try water based markers on it, they look fantastic on it! And: 17 minutes are not too long! The longer the better
I did not think the last video was too long. I appreciated all of the tips. And thank you for the sketch book recommendations. I've been wanting to start a drawing sketchbook but have such limited time to draw that I'm worried if I work on the sketchbook, I'll never be able to do finished pieces. Can you please talk about when and how you use a sketchbook as opposed to going for a nice piece of stand-alone paper?
I use one moleskin for my kitchen notes, and thanks to you i bought a Midori for my sketch practice. i consider is cheaper than moleskin or leuchturm... Love your videos
I just love you Fran, it's insane, your videos are fabulous, your content is so good, damn, and please do not think that 15min videos are too long. I'm thinking the other way around, please do longer videooooos :)
So helpful! i love art and craft myself but not a good drawer. however you talking about and showing your sketchbooks makes me really want to do it myself! and your tips are so good i feel like id be a pro straight away ;)
Hey Fran! Have you tried Rhodia? It's a beautiful vellum coated paper that is great for various types of mediums. I love them for lettering, and it's quite cheap for a notebook/sketchbook (Around 4-23$ Canadian, depending on size). It also comes in different styles like dotted, lined, graph etc. I use them with fountain pens and my tombow sketch markers with very little to no bleed.
You don't talk too much...Every video is a pleasure to see! I had a bad experience with the Ogami sketchbook too... I noticed that even though the markers didn't bleed through the paper, it looked a little weird, also, not all my inking pens worked on this paper, and since the paper is waterproof, water based ink takes forever to dry....I had problems with the eraser too... Very interesting and useful video btw (as usual)... I'm a fan! >.< keep it up
Hey fran, I totally get you when you were saying how enjoyable it is to use the Midori sketchbook!! I haven't use their sketchbook line yet (ordered one immediately after watching this video though lol); but I use their A5 notebook as my daily planner and writing on it and even just flipping through it is just pure pleasure. So yea, I feel ya there :P
I bought 2 moleskine sketchbooks a long time ago, a watercolor one and a normal drawing one. I had no idea what to do with the normal one because I just don't sketch! Silly me buying it, but I have a ton of copics and have been thinking for a while where can I use them that's not on a layout pad, I hate loose pages so like you I keep many drawing and painting notebooks around and now I will definitely use it to draw with my copics, I'm so excited!
I first encountered stone paper at a paper conference (you're not the only one who loves paper, Fran, it's not weird at all XD ) and it feels so nice. I didn't get the chance to draw on it though. Just touch it.
Just picked up a midori for $10 US! I am so excited to use it w/ copics & ink! I got the A5 size, also I am picking up 2 moleskines too! Along with a load of other art supplies!
The problem with me is that there literally aren't any art stores in my city. There is one ,but it does not sell this kind of things, but only craft supplies .So I gotta order. But I can't order from amazon cuz I have to deal with shipping in Europe. So ya *help me pls*
I really like the rendr paper but it doesnt sit flat in its hard bound version. Really tempted to buy the midori now, but I have two sketchbooks right now but I need moreeee! lol
My favorite paper for copics is the crescent rendr no show thru paper. It can be found in sketchbook form, which is what I use. It isn't kidding when it says no show! I am so happy, now I can use BOTH sides of the paper :D
Midori paper is everything! I use it as a diary and for watercolor practice! It also takes fountain pen SUPER well. I still have no idea how to use copics, but i'd love to try them in the midori. I also like that it's not super bright. For me, the moment I put water onto the leutchterm, it starts to roll off 😭
Hoy justo me compré un leuchtrum (?) A5 y no puedo esperar a usarlo!
I have this loose leaf from a Kokuyo or Maruman, a Japanese brand. I bought it for practicing calligraphy because they're the only brand(s) that I know makes very smooth paper. Then I tried using watercolor on it & I almost couldn't believe that it didn't bleed! The paper is so thin that I thought it would definitely bleed but it didn't. Now that I think about it maybe it's kinda the Ogami Sketchbook, the smoothness of the paper feels kinda like plastic-y.
What? 17 minutes aren't too long! The topic is vast, you did a GREAT job! Fran, take your time and do whatever you think you need to do in your videos! If the topic is interesting for the viewer, s/he will stick with it even if it's needed to watch in parts :) Btw, I loooooved your last video!
first of all, i have to say i LOVE your work and youre such an inspiration to me (youre one of the biggest reasons im in school to pursue illustration as a career myself). i have a bit of a sketchbook collection myself but i know after school i know they wont all fit on my small shelf..do you have any ideas of how or where to store them? or could you make a video on how you keep your collection? orrrr could you do a studio tour?! either way, thank you if you get to answer this!
thank you so much! such a cool thing that you can afford these cool high quality sketchbooks and review them !!! i'd like to try midori one ! so proud to be one of your patrons ^_^
If you made a 3 hour video about sketchbooks, I would watch it.

Fran, if you want to try some paper that makes inks look amazing then you need to try Tomoe River Paper. It's ridiculously thin, but it really makes inks look beautiful.
Don't apologize! That's how long you felt it had to be, and it was perfect that way. I love watching you!
Thank you for this video, Fran. The Midori sketchbook looks absolutely amazing -- I really, really want to try it next time

It's not weird that an artist should be obsessed with paper. it's part of your craft, it's important. imagine if a carpenter wasn't interested in wood
As nice it is to learn from your videos, I particularly enjoy the videos you make of your travels around the city, visiting museums and places like that. :)
I haven't drawn in my sketchbook for a while now but after watching this I think that obsession has started up again! Thanks Fran haha!
Too long?! There is no such thing, this is the highlight of the week, there can never be enough :D
I love to watch your videos no matter how long they are! I enjoy listening to you talk about art supplies :)

The problem with me is that there literally aren't any art stores in my city. There is one ,but it does not sell this kind of things, but only craft supplies .So I gotta order. But I can't order from amazon cuz I have to deal with shipping in Europe. So ya *help me pls*
OMG finally someone!!! I have the same problem mate :( and here copics doesnt even exist lmao -crys loudly-
• Allen Montgomery • I'm not alone lol *cries too*
*stop it get some help*
Omg, I loved this video, I'm also an obsessed of sketchbooks
For me, the moment I put water onto the leutchterm, it starts to roll off 😭
You're amazing thank you for making my day everytime you upload a video
Hola Fran.
Do you have an iPad Pro? I would be SOO interested in seeing how you utilized the design apps. Love your style!
If the topic is interesting for the viewer, s/he will stick with it even if it's needed to watch in parts :) Btw, I loooooved your last video!
first of all, i have to say i LOVE your work and youre such an inspiration to me (youre one of the biggest reasons im in school to pursue illustration as a career myself). i have a bit of a sketchbook collection myself but i know after school i know they wont all fit on my small shelf..do you have any ideas of how or where to store them? or could you make a video on how you keep your collection? orrrr could you do a studio tour?! either way, thank you if you get to answer this!
thank you so much! such a cool thing that you can afford these cool high quality sketchbooks and review them !!! i'd like to try midori one ! so proud to be one of your patrons ^_^
omg the marker on the Midori sketchbook looks like digital... amazing. I know you thought your last video was too long but I didn't!
Ogami's website says the paper is waterproof, so that might be why your markers smudged. Could be better suited to dry media.
Hey Fran I like listening to your voice. I enjoy your energy, so don't worry so much about your video length :).
