    Awesome work done by all the crew members, not just the pilots. Sometimes they don't get the needed recognition for their effort. They are as veterans of war as any other infantry, paratroopers or pilots.

      The cameras were mounted inside the leading edge of the wings, aimed along the same axis as the guns. They were rigged to the trigger mechanism on the control stick so that when the guns were fired the camera's would be activated as well.

      Well.. in very few in the very later part, but the 50cal was the main-stay main shooter

    • @antonrudenham3259
      @antonrudenham3259 8 лет назад +3

      +TheFunkhouser Well,maybe they were right to do so.The primary target of allied aircraft in the last two thirds of the war were enemy fighters and for this a fast firing and accurate weapon like the M2 HB was perfect.Had the enemy been bombers a 20mm loadout would have been more suitable but they weren't.The enemy on the other hand had to battle both bombers and fighters so they armed their aircraft with a mix of cannon and MG.Ironically the time when the RAF most needed cannon armed fighters was in 1940,when they were armed with 303 Brownings.The USA never had to withstand an aerial assault and therefore quite correctly went with the .50.Cannon,while more destructive were not as accurate or as fast firing as MG and when a fighter pilot had his enemy in his sights for a fraction of a second,RPM trumps destructive force.

    • @TheFunkhouser
      @TheFunkhouser 8 лет назад +2

      ANTON RUDENHAM
      thats not totally correct. In the Battle of Britian the RAF wanted more Spits with 20mm cannon simply because they can take planes out way faster...and that why Spits always carried them after that battle.
      I still wonder why only a handful of US planes had them.

    • @antonrudenham3259
      @antonrudenham3259 8 лет назад +1

      19 Sqn were equipped with 20mm armed Spitfire Mk1s in the initial stages of the BoB but they were very unreliable and suffered constant stoppages due to a badly designed round feed system.
      19 Sqn complained mightily and were given back MG armed Spits with which they fought very well.
      Obviously a reliable cannon armament was what was needed but that wasn't clear to all concerned and led to a famous battle of wits between Adolf "Sailor" Malan and Douglas Bader, Bader preferred the many MGs over the fewer cannon claiming that the average pilot was a poor shot and needed something with which to hose down the enemy with many,many rounds, Malan preferred the cannon and there was an impasse.
      It was not until the RAF conducted firepower trials using an old Blenheim airframe as a target that the fallacy of Baders position became apparent.
      The cannon shells dismembered the airframe in a short burst and the MG burst just seemed to make many small holes.
      The reason the USAAF and USN went almost exclusively with large calibre MGs was simply because they were easily powerful enough to destroy enemy fighters which were the predominant threat by the time the USA entered the war.
      The USA was never going to be attacked by enemy bombers so why fit irksome cannon which are not best suited to combatting enemy fighters?

    What on those ships are being hit to where the blow up so hardcore when the aircraft are shooting the guns at them ? I thought most combat ships were armored in sensitive spots.

    • @MegaBloggs1
      @MegaBloggs1 8 лет назад

      +Dragnoxz Zanox american carrier decks were made of wood in ww2 and dont forget on the hangar deck you have high octane gasoline and ordanance the lexington was sunk by a petrol explosion despite having a CO2 fire protection system

    • @Dragnoxz
      @Dragnoxz 8 лет назад

      MegaBloggs1 I know. Just one hit could end a carrier of that time. But what I am talking about are the smaller ships, or boats. The guns shooting at the metal of a destroyer or something is what I was looking at. The mid section of the island or superstructure of the ship, BOOM, just form guns. Could it be that there was a build up in pressure and gasses in the area ?

    • @SpicyToast
      @SpicyToast 8 лет назад

      Ammunition racks for the smaller calibre AA guns were usually stored on deck near the tubs. Torpedos were stored in their launchers. Added to that, destroyers had paper thin plating so a strafing attack by fighters could still chew them up pretty bad. They were dubbed 'tin cans' for a reason.

    • @Dragnoxz
      @Dragnoxz 8 лет назад

      KzDax
      Dang, I thought the destroyers had like an inch or two think metal hulls. Then again, a 20mm shell probably tear through that. I know modern destroyers have two inches, but dang, that still don't seem like enough. I'd be putting plat metal or ERA on my ships.

    • @scdevon
      @scdevon 7 лет назад +1

      Fletcher Class WWII Destroyers had a 0.75 inch armor belt (the sides of the ship) and 0.5 inch decks I'm pretty sure. They were built light for speed and evasive maneuvering which kept them out of trouble a lot, but in close range fighting with limited maneuvering they could get shot up like swiss cheese. Cramped quarters. Rough riding. Lightly armored. Not very desirable ships to be in, but somebody had to do it back then.

They were just business, designed by the super rich to put the world in debt. Sad but proven to be true. This has tarnished the shine of the soldiers.

    Isn't it a trifle suspicious that the technology to cheaply colorize black and white film preceded the miraculous discovery of color films of WWII? Even gun camera film, which was black and white right through the 1950's? I don't dislike colorized films that I have seen for fifty years in black and white, but why is it necessary to lie about it?
