It’s interesting to see the public discourse regarding Capstan station. Some people are against stating it only adds to commute times and serves no one and, others consider it an integral part of a future community future proofing transit in Richmond. I think it’s a great addition in the long run. The longer platforms gives me hope that Translink will get it together and expedite the expansion of all Canada line station platforms. With commuters already use to service reduction and constant construction let’s build it now and get it over with. The future does look bright regardless now that Capstan is built! Thank you for this great video showcasing it!
Thing is they underbuilt the platforms with maligned ridership estimates and to cut the costs. Project's an example of PPP gone wrong. Now it's going to cost more and going to be a challenge extending those, particularly the underground stations. Those stations typically have the vent shafts on the end; having those shafts would need to be moved entirely / partially.
They reduced the frequency of Canada Line which is a disgrace. There are one to two fewer trains per hour in each direction now, which I cannot comprehend why.
When I was taking the Canada Line today, the schedules were showing 0,4,8 mins on the main line and once 4,12,20 on the branches, indicating service cuts
@ one short additional stop shouldn’t be that invasive to frequency. At most it would go down “half a train” per hour. But Translink has knowingly deployed fewer trains on the day I rode than they should have, whilst the YVR branch is the same as ever before and it was also intervened on.
@@MDonovan to clarify, before the changes the whole cycle turnaround time was a perfect 60 mins from waterfront to YVR or Richmond cycle back to waterfront. Now it's probably like 62 mins. So 18 tph in a one hour loop would require exactly 18 trains, and if those trains were placed in a loop that's now two mins longer with the new Capstan station, then that means a frequency of 62/18 with is 3.44 mins down from 3.33, which would reduce the frequency by barely half a train an hour. But there are three full fewer departures an hour now, which means that TransLink has reduced the number of trains deployed to 16 during the off peak, suspiciously to increase peak hour operation to 21 trains deployed without increasing the wear on the trains and due to budget constraints.
Now that Capstan is now open, Translink really needs to consider expanding the line towards into Delta, even better towards tswassesen ferry terminal, because even taking uber, hwy 99 southbound traffic was so heavy through the stevenson hwy, & the massey tunnel! As a visitor was a low experience!
The trains would be full, but not enough people would get on & off part way. Getting on & off is what rakes in the bucks for transit. Sending rapid bus through would be a great start. In fact, just improve the #351, #401, & #601, and that would be a huge improvement.
@eugenetswong I DON'T CARE OF FULL CAPACITY LEVEL! THE CANADA LINE THAT IS FREQUENT, IS A JOURNEY TURNING POINT THEN ROUTE 620 THAT RUNS EVER HOUR, ESPECIALLY MATCHING, & BALANCING THE DEPARTURE TO SWARTZ BAY!
It would be really hard for the Canada Line, being short sighted when planned, to get extended even just up to Steveston Highway. No.3 Road is too narrow for median viaducts and need massive amounts of land appropriation to build stations let alone viaducts beside the road. Hard also to build a portal to connect back to underground and a built up mid rise area
@@TheRandCrews So doesn't it occur to you that my journey with uber, southbound on hwy99 was congested towards Stevenson hwy, & the massey tunnel? That is pure evidence the Canada Line could've, & should be extended beyond Richmond! That will relief uber customers to commute on hwy 99 like I did, contrary to the fact nearly missing out on the cut off time with BC FERRIES to the gulf islands! The Canada line that terminus @ Richmond-Brighouse, is the same terminus of the TORONTO TRANSIT COMMISION SUBWAY LINE 4( YONGE/SHEPPARD-DONMILLS)
Oh yeah that’s doable. The rotem trains measure out to 41m long. If you can do 19m on a middle car, that becomes 60m with a 3.75m overhang on either side. For reference, The expo line mk5 project is going to be a 2.5m overhang. Realistically I think the next best idea is to have a 2nd generation Rotem EMU in 5-10 years time with 3 shorter 16-17m long cars. At least the length difference and door spacing isn’t like between the 1st and 2nd/3rd generation Expo/Millennium fleets.
@@jmstransitI wonder if they intended it to be a Rotterdam style middle car where it has only one door and is only 10m wide? The downtown stations are only 50m long
So basically you have a mk1 length car (12m) in the middle: could work but I feel there could be some weight/mechanical issues. That said, they could use a centered bogie, or pull off a Stadler and not have wheels at all.
Great video as always! So, I put the question "with the introduction of Capstan Station, will frequency on the Canada Line increase," into the Brave search engine's A.I., and it gave me this answer, implying that the increase would happen immediately or has already occurred: "According to the search results, the answer is yes, with the introduction of Capstan Station, train frequencies on the Canada Line will increase. Specifically, TransLink CEO Kevin Quinn mentioned that the Canada Line’s capacity has increased by between 12% to 20% due to the deployment of two additional trains, raising the number of trains in service from up to 14 to 16 during off-peak hours and from 16 to 18 trains during peak periods. This increase in capacity is intended to accommodate the growing ridership across the entire system, including the new Capstan Station." Could they have already increased the frequency without some grand press conference to announce it? If not immediately, then are there any clues out there as to how soon peak-hour frequency could return to the Canada Line?
i disagree, seeming with the massive redevelopment area around Capstan Way, good alternative to driving to and from the area and way closer than going from Aberdeen or Bridgeport. Also YVR branch will also get an extra station when Terminal 3 opens, so both Brighouse and YVR will have same amount of stations again.
@@TheRandCrews Both Aberdeen and Bridgeport are with a walking distance from that area. If the train speed remains the same, it means that we will lose about 5 minutes during commute.
Such a handsome station. Makes me proud!

Kinda sucks that this station opening wasn’t announced a lot sooner lol
Yeah, I wanted to go to the opening but friday midday was not possible lol
I could go as well if I could
Because it’s secret and it was TransLink’s Decision.
beautiful station

Adding the new station adds over a minute each way. So instead of 6 minutes between trains its closer to 8 minutes

Canada line should extend to delta by connecting twassen mall and ferry and go to white rock
No no. Don’t bother including a map or anything, that shows where this thing actually is. We’ll look it up on google maps.
When is Ontario going to take transit seriously
You can see that the Capstan station is single track so stopping here delays the line in and out to Brighouse too
Wow just got here on a via train the day before the official opening
I don’t understand why they have to make the platform longer… I don’t get it
The platform length is not futureproofed at most stations for longer trains and for the longest time the line has dealt with overcrowding.
