This reminds me of my latest theory.
I was on a That Time On Murder She Wrote marathon and there was an episode where a game developer is murdered while testing virtual reality.
What if the headsets are fine except if you die while using them your soul is trapped in the Digital Circus, that would explain the Hell parallels and the fact that no-one can die in the virtual world, you can't kill what is already dead.
