  • About done wrenching on this car, and ready to sell...here I drive and discuss the great tragedy of the G1 Mini Cooper S. Would absolutely love to keep it and drive it for a long time....but no, I am smarter than that.

Just watched your review on mini cooper s r53. I own a mini R53 S for 3 years now same color Black with chrome decals and a badge and black interior.Only parts I had to replace on the mini was disks and brake pads, shock mounts, struds that hold up the bonnet and bootlid and normal service. It has 145000km on it and still drives like new.My brother in law has a 2017 Ford Fiesta ST and like you mentioned they are just so fun to drive if you are on a budget.

Great when it's running, hell when it's not. Sounds like a Harley. *Harley fan armor activated*

Hi! I was wondering if you still have your fiesta st and if the turbo has held up. I’m thinking about upgrading the turbo with a x47 or whoosh hybrid. If your willing to give your input I’d really appreciate it. I don’t know how the newer x47r runs compared to the original. I just want something fun and reliable.

I do. No issues. X47 is no longer available, I'd go with a Whoosh unit or an S280. Both seem to be great options.

Maybe you should own the car more than a few weeks. Had my 05 for years. Super reliable daily.

Thanks that's good to hear. I've considered finding another one that's in good shape to enjoy.

Nice car. Can you share how the Cooper S drives comparing to the Prelude which you also own ? thanks ~

Thanks. They're two totally different cars. The Prelude is large, heavy, sophisticated yet simple, feels slow but very solid, very mature. The Cooper S is tiny, lightweight, and frenetic. It feels faster (though it isn't) than the Prelude because it provides such great feedback. In the Prelude you feel isolated compared to the Mini where you feel connected. Both are great in different ways. But in terms of quality and fit/finish, the Prelude is a gentleman while the Mini is like a toy that's about to break.

Thank you. I own a Prelude and been toying about the idea of replacing it with one of these first gen Cooper S for a while now. Its nice to get some insight from someone who happen to own and driven both of these cars.

@@alan1c I do not recommend buying a Mini for any reason unless you are consigned to throwing your money away and never being able to make any money selling it. That's what I've learned. If you're itching to get out of the Prelude I suggest a used Fiesta ST, they can be had for under $10k and it is a fantastic and reliable car for the money.

I was looking for a POV.
You know I'm from Europe; Germany to be exact. I've "owned" a horrible 2008 Mercedes A-Class.
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_A-Class
My grandparents owned it since 2009 and tried to keep it in good shape. In 2019 I got my first job so I could share the car with them they just told me, that I had to pay for fixes, parts and sometimes the fuel.
In that 2 years I had the car:
-Heated seats on the driver side broke
-Blower just worked on full blast, at the end it also squeeked
-power folding mirror couldn't fold in or out anymore on it's own I had to carefully push it to fold out completly.
-the leather on my steering wheel was coming off cause the stitching just dissolved
-my manual tranmission started cracking when I shifted from 1st to 2nd and also from 2nd to 3rd that's due to a bad dual mass flywheel
-when I started it first thing in the morning the steering wheel and shifter vibrated like mad
-the engine block was never mounted right
-the hatch started rusting from the inside out.
-Got rid of it because my A/C compressor blew up and ripped my fan belt and my battery was no longer charged. So I nearly stranded.
With "only" 174.000km/ ~107.000miles. Now I bought a rare 1997 Honda Civic hatchback 3 door.
Rare just because litterly no one drives Hondas in Germany and the rest of Europe; they're rather unpopular I don't know why tho. Anyway I got not as much extras as I got in the A-Class but I got a power sunroof ^^ and more important finally a reliable car.
Now about MINI. I work in a dealership that's not bolted to one manufacturer. We got a lot of customers with older MINI especially 2nd Gen. Hatches and Convertibles.
It doesn't matter if it's a One, Cooper or Cooper S. They all suffer from timing chain and tensioner problems and they burn oil like mad when they hit around 45.000miles.
First Gen Hatches and Convertibles have tranmission problems, a lot of electrical problems, engine problems..Even the current ones are trash. At least they offer more room for passengers and I personally like their styling the most.
But still Fiats also have a bad reputation, but to me that's just their reputation their engines are solid as well as their transmissions. MINIs just drive fantastic, sporty and engaging that's it.
