The sonic quality of his voice speaks ALL languages. It speaks the HUMAN language, that language which has no words and all the sounds of our groanings. I know not a word he sings but I know his emotions. They resound in every note.
Portugal is my life time passion because of this type of music; Fado. When I first heard it I had never heard my feeling sung so accurately, but after years of listening and frequenting fado houses, I try to sing it myself with my Anglo blood and I can't; "more passion" I was told. It's in their precious blood.
+Luis Constantino. I play Fado on the the Bandolim and post videos on RUclips. Do you have any suggestions of good Portuguese Bandolim players? Thanks---Patricio
How glamorous and glorious it is when you confidently present your national art and culture in this industrial world of business POP music fascism. Your country shall be proud of you Camane. And people like me are inspired by people like you
Fado literally translates to fate. We cry our fates under a solemn tone. Because we know the tides turn, and today you might be in the top of world, and tomorrow fading into obscurity.
Thank you. I've only ever heard one other male singing Fado. I've recordings from numerous woman naturally including Amalia. Camané is wonderful to listen to and to watch. And what incredible eyes he has. Love the Portuguese guitars such beautiful instruments. I visited a museum just for them while living in Lisboa. Extraordinary. From the first moment I heard Fado I was hooked. It tears at my heart and reaches me in the most profound part of my being.
+globalman. I mostly listen to female Fadistas as well, but I recommend "O Pagem by Alfredo Marcenriro" and "Julia Florista by Max". You might also like Fado on Bandolim.
His brothers are also acclaimed fado singers, Pedro Moutinho and Hélder Moutinho, from whom I take the liberty of suggesting "Venho de Um Tempo" or "Já não te espero" for example. From the historical singers, it is detrimental to listen to Beatriz da Conceição or "fiz leilão de mim" from Max. Hope you enjoy the path of discovery :) . Regards.
I'm an avid follower of NPR Tiny Desk Concerts. I'm also portuguese. I was quite surprised to see a fado singer at Bob's desk, but also excited about it. Fado is a very peculiar genre, I think the comparison with blues is a great one. Also like blues, fado is not only about sadness and melancholy, though it's its most common and traditional form. Like traditional blues, fado has also evolved and one can find some happy and more upbeat fado songs. Another thing it shares with blues I think is the live experience vs studio recordings. Though this can be true for any genre, I think when it comes to fado the difference is even bigger. I don't usually buy or listen to fado records at home, but I quite enjoy listening to fado live, specially on its more traditional form, which is usually on small restaurants/taverns in "old town". The level of interaction and intimicy between singer, guitarists and audience always makes it a very unique and quite emotional and enjoyable experience. Fado lives from emotions and is powered/fuelled by them. If you ever visit Lisbon, Porto or Coimbra in Portugal I recommend you try to find a place where they sing (traditional) fado (and you'll also notice the style they sung it in these 3 cities is quite distinctive). Camané is one of the most prolific fado singers in Portugal (on its "traditional" form, though he has been involved in many different projects, not so much related to fado) and is one of my favourites (along with female singer Carminho), but there are other singers/musicians who have took fado into new grounds, like Mariza or Antonio Zambujo, which are also worth listening to. Thank you NPR for showing Fado to the world!
I'm 5 years late but here i am... I love reading people's comments saying that they don't understand Portuguese, but really feel the emotions that Fado carries. Like Mac Miller said, music is a beautiful thing.
Dude, yes. Thank you for putting this piece of world music in the minds of people. Fado is the dearest part of my culture and I'm so proud it has given chills to NPR.
Fui. Ver o camane e o mario laginha a casa da. Musica e adorei o camane.
Wow! NPR Music is probably my favourite RUclips channel, and such a surprise it was to open it and see a great portuguese singer. Fado, which is now UNESCO's World Heritage, must be heard so that everyone may have an opportunity to feel what portuguese people feel when listening to it.
André Silva It just makes your heart in a good way. The sonic impact of his style and approach and voice just transcends language. It's like you can see the songs in your mind, feel the stories at the soul level. Once again, NPR TDC brings their A game in this performance. I'm envious of ya'll with this fine music. XD
This made me immediately emotional as soon as I started listening. Makes me want to go to Portugal 🇵🇹 and hear Fado music in person. It’s so beautiful.
Even tough he isn't one of my favorite fado singers, I find him to expressive and prefer the style of say Alfredo Marceneiro or, he still represents our culture beautifully
I've been having a rough week emotionally and the first two songs were indeed sad but they actually started to cheer me up a little. Misery loves company, right? The last song made me cry. HARD. So beautiful, so happy, so full of life. Bravo. And those two guitar players, well done gents.
Great perfomance and as a portuguese I got to say the description of the video is perfect I wouldnt have said it any better, congrats to all an thank you for the experience!
In 2007 I got a job in the "world" department of a huge music store. I must have been going through the blues because I discovered FADO MUSIC by accident & connected to it in levels I had not thought possible in regards to music. Soo I spent about 2 years listening to Camane, Ana Moura, Lucilia Do Carmo, Misia, Antonio Zambujo, Madredeus, Carlos Do Carmo, Mathilde Larguinho, Cristina Branco, & my all time fave MARIZA whom I later saw in concert & met back stage. But yes! FADO MUSIC is amazing & I always describe it as The Most Beautiful Music You've Never Heard. Only that now. I cannot listen to Fado because I immidiately get transported to that time when I discovered it and I cannot deal. Without wanting to drown myself in wine & have a breakdown. Ha ha!!
For you english-speaking folks around these parts, here's a stab at translating the lyrics of the first song: Abandonment (David Mourão Ferreira) For your free thoughts They locked you up far away So far away that my lament Cannot reach you And you can only hear the wind And you can only hear the sea They took you in the middle of the night The dark covered everything It was at night on a night The darkest one of all It was at night, it was at night It never was day again Oh! The poison of that night Keeps on poisoning me I can only listen to the silence That you left behind At least you can hear the wind At least you can hear the sea
BadSeeder great translation. only thing left to be said, this is about the arrests of political prisoners under the dictatorship that ruled Portugal for about a half of the 1900's. The prison in question was in the seaside city of Peniche, hence those two last heart wrenching phrases.
António Fonseca Appreciate ya for the context of the lyrics, mate. That REALLY makes me see and hear the song in my mind differently and even more beautifully sad.
btw It's not Barrios, it's bairros, which are neighbourhoods in english... thanks! Portuguese always get hoodked up on fado with their legacy passes on from father/son. it's an all-around-the-country feeling... we have specific "casas do fado" / "Fado home's" that only have live fado with different singers/players in all the country, more specific of course in some places than others...

Insano.

For your free thoughts
