I wouldn't be so forgiving to the children. They were well into their teens when the divorce happened and that's old enough to both know what their mom was going was wrong and to question any promises of breaking up the family or withholding college money. Wouldn't dad be paying for college anyway?

I'm sure most 16 year-olds can figure out that will be settled in court and if they simply tell the truth, mom can be forced to pay anyway. This is clearly fiction.

If the kids stay in contact with the mother, reconciliation is impossible, as they’re supporting someone who deliberately did all this harm.
