Kate, I watch you each week. It helps me be mindful of my goals. The old saying" birds of a feather flock together" comes to my mind. When I surround myself with like-minded people about setting a budget and sticking to it, reaching goals, saving, etc. This helps me stay on track. Thanks so much.

I turn 60 next month. Yay. I can relate to the alcohol thing.. my Roth journey began in my 30s. Stopped when life happened.. Two young kids. Divorce &Job loss. Divorce finalized and job loss all within 2 days.. that was a rough week! I began to max my Roth in my mid 50s. So I'm sure I'm way behind.. but it all turning out okay. I'm blessed beyond! Have a nice day everyone!

I’ve definitely cut back on alcohol, not just to save money but for health reasons too. I watched a long video by a doctor about what alcohol does to you, the main premise was that no amount is healthy. I admit it scared the crap out of me. I still have a glass of wine on occasion. I feel better and save money as well.

Hi K Squad. I’ve been watching and keeping up. I just haven’t been commenting. You all know I’ve faced death, beating stage 4 cancer. Also, I work in nursing where I see people at the end of life, minimal stuff crammed into one room. It really woke me up! We don’t need MOST of the stuff we have. Sell it! I’ve been selling my Hallmark ornament collection on eBay. Why? I can’t take it with me when I die. I am sick of storing and dusting it. I am just done with the extras. MOST IMPORTANT: I want memories and freedom from working asap vs debt. Make savings more fun than buying crap we don’t need. PERIOD!

    One of the best tips
I have for a no spend January is to NOT overspend on Christmas. I have a premade list of who and what I am buying for at Christmas and stick to it so there are no surprises come January. Of If I can’t pay it off at the end of the month, I don’t buy it. I also eat out of my pantry the entire month using up items I purchased as loss leaders or sales during the fall. (Except for fresh produce or perishables.) It’s fun to try and come up with meals using what i already have. Thanks Kate for the video!

my favorite tip for a month without spending: use what i already have: food, beauty products, cleaning supplies and then clean out the freezer, clean out the pantry, clean out the bathroom closet and make a list of what needs to be restocked (just the things i really use and like)
and I get a really good feeling from a non-spending period. No stress of shoping, no time losing to running around to get everything,

Love it! I have turned saving money into a challenge to beat my own budget targets, and that takes some doing. My earliest memories of frugality were every New Year, when my mother pronounced that 'this is the year of the economy', then things carried on pretty much as usual, which was a very strict frugality that arose from parents who lived through WW2 and did their formative years on rationing. That has been a very helpful framework for budgeting and frugal living in my own life.

I shop like this as well but never heard or thought of it being a "capsule" grocery list.. Eggs, cheese, some kind of bread and ground beef and coffee. We have a deep pantry and freezers (we live on a mini farm and have chickens, beef and goats) so I only shop loss leaders 90% of the time. Saves me big time. Also do Breakfast for Dinner a few times a month which saves $$
I don't drink much at all. I have quite a collection but its just me and my husband and he does not drink at all. I loved going to wineries and would usually do "free tastings" and then pick up a bottle but I hate to open a bottle and have it go to waste. Guess I'm saying I need a drinking partner. LOL.

Thank you for the great video... a couple of things ... when the "new" customer promotions are going on, I contact my providers and discuss my options to lower my monthly fees and , so far, the provider has given me the same promotion as a "loyal" customer... mind you, I do shop around and always do this when the other providers are also doing their promotions so I have an out... I just did this with my internet/phone provider and not only saved additional money on my monthly bills, I even got additional data for free. As for the food capsule, I like the basics plus protein... you can do anything with eggs, butter, cheese, flour, milk/cream (or alternative - unsweetened) and some protein/veg of choice. I also always have dry beans and rice in my pantry... These items with some basic spices/yeast, baking powder and baking soda - you can make almost anything.

To spice those January meals up, explore side dish recipes using corn, green beans, carrots, and cabbage. Skip the fresh herbs and use dried instead. Use canned or frozen corn, green beans, and tomatoes. Fresh onion and garlic are cheaper than dried flakes most times. Skip the Rotel tomatoes and very finely dice a portion of a hot pepper (use gloves, freeze extra finely diced), sime inuinm sime soicesm and a house brand of tomatoes instead.
Explore the open bottles of sauces, condiments, and things in your refridgerator door. Look for recipes that will use them up.
Explore dishes, salads, and desserts that use rice. If youve got a lot of pasta, do the same for pasta. Look fkr tje inexpensive bags of 10lb and 8lb of potatoes then cook them using a new recipe or method; or one younhafe t had fir a while.
Quick breads and muffins both sweet (contains sugar) and savory (for eating with dinner). Most newer recipes contain additives a basic recipe does not. As a starter, look fkr a 4 ingredient Irish Soda Bread recipie then staet looking at all the other versions out there both sweet and savory.

One of my frugal tips is to go to the Thrift store first when looking for something. I wanted a shoe basket. I went to several stores one Saturday and the best one I saw cost 40$ but I didn’t want to spend 40$ so the very last store was our local Thrift store. I found exactly what I wanted for 5$. I was so excited!!! I also needed a bag/purse and found exactly what I wanted for 3$.

    Great message!
We (Sue and I) are sort of semi-no spenders and semi-minimalists but we are, and I'm soo happy to say this, we have become "super savers" and uber budgeters. For us the key to becoming frugal and mindful of our money, saving for a rainy day is having a real honest budget. We were probably 2 years into our debt free journey before we got down to it and crafted our budget. Our journey would have been many months shorter if we had put our budget front and center.

You know November and December come every single year.
You know what holidays are in those months.
    It is a big expense.
    Plan early for the holidays.
Don't wait until the last minute to plan.
    Think outside the box.
Instead of the huge meal,do brunch
    Snacks
    Dessert
    Drinks.
    Sandwiches
    Have a pot luck
As for gifts, how many people are you buying gifts for?
    What is the budget?
If you plan early, you aren't hit with a high credit card bill in January.
    You won't go into debt.

It may be a no-spend winter for me if not the whole year. I'll still need a few basics but I'll be calling it no "extras."

Hi Kate- I have been following you for probably 2 years now. I love your tips! I decided I need to do a no spend January. Unless it is a necessity, I don't need it. I have a vacation at the end of January so I will commit to not spending for my next credit card cycle. This is going to be hard for me. I am a sucker for a good deal and also stress shop.
As for drinking, I decided to quite when I turned 47. It was not doing anything for me so I quit one day. Here I am over a year later and doing great. It has reduced our dinner checks when we do go out for a nice meal not to mention the costs we save monthly for not feeding this habit. I went AF for my daughter's bachelorette party, her wedding and every dinner and holiday not missing that glass of wine in my hand. AND to keep my hands busy, I started to crochet and got pretty good at it. Now, yarn shopping is a problem but I have enough stock to get me through no spending for a month. Wish me luck!

Something that helps me not spend on home decor - whenever I'm browsing decor online it means I'm unsatisfied with the space I have. So usually if I do a deep clean of the area, it feels fresh & inviting & all of a sudden I feel content with what I already have & stops the urge to buy.

Happy Frugal Friday! I’m always amazed at how many more meals I can get out of my “empty” fridge. We are doing a pantry challenge to help clean out the excess. We have allotted approximately $40-50 a month for fresh produce.
As for alcohol, if you have issues with it by all means don’t drink. But with that said, it is the quality of what you are drinking that is affecting you more. The cheap crap will make you sick, higher quality stuff doesn’t affect you the same way unless you over consume. It is one of things that it makes sense to spend more money on.

My capsule grocery will be going to Sam club and get a rotisserie chicken already cooked and from there I have three days worth of meals. I do a this since I am empty nester and I do not have a huge grocery store bill anymore. I also buy bigger purchases on the fruit and veggie fresh and buy them in the freezer. When I need them I have them to just cook or let them thaw out. I also buy bulk on the blueberry muffin 6 for 5.00 same them put them in the freezer and take out what needed for a lite breakfast. I do this type of capsule grocery list also help out budget for the month since these are the staples usually every week or every other week. 😊

I don’t really do no spend January as it’s the summer here (Aus) But my plan for 2024 is to not buy anything unless for an outing and I have a cruise in May.
When I’m trying not to spend I don’t look at it as I’m not allowed to spend, I don’t want to spend. And I remember I have everything I need to be happy and being grateful helps too, I don’t just focus on the end goal, it’s a way of life, content and stress free, that’s always my goal. I would rather use the time to relax, have some wind down time, to just breathe and spend time with family. Do some day trips to the beach. Detox from December lol

Kate, many of the things you mentioned, I already do, but some stand out, and I wanted to share. First, I do keep a budget/ledger, just so I know where the money goes. Things that stay the same, I put on auto pay. This also includes church donations, and savings account. The only things I pay by myself is my two credit cards. I want to see an itemized list each month and pay it off completely. I have an overdraft account on my checking, so if there is a month that has more expenses, I avoid the overdraft fee. I also pay that off each month. I use very little cash. Recently I had some unexpected medical bills, I talked to my bank, with their guidance I was able to pay off two loans (medical bills and car expenses), saving the money that would otherwise gone to pay interest.
I like to think of myself as frugal and minimalist, I do shop my closets, pantry, etc. that seasonal refresh in my home is important to me. I declutter frequently, and don’t want to bring new things into my home.
Foods: I need a soft diet and avoid certain foods. I make soups, portion it into qt.size bags, freeze it flat on a cookie sheet, then I can stand them up Ike books in the freezer. I use veggies, ground meat, rice, barley etc., and Pinterest for ideas. I’m retired, and my big splurge is going out daily for a change of scenery, I like to sketch, so I go to McDonalds for a sandwich ($2.00), I plan this into my budget, gives me some social time, and creative time. I don’t go to stores without a list, and only buy what I need. I have an app that I use to track what I need. I declutter my pantry monthly, so I know what I have and need and don’t buy duplicates. Thanks to your suggestions, I frequently have no spend days/weeks. I’m definitely in for the no spend January. I often feel there is nothing I NEED! I get satisfaction from my seasonal rotation of things I already have, and my low cost outings to sketch, lunch and socialize. I also use apps like Fetch, McDonalds, etc. also using the credit card instead of cash for purchases gives me points. This was recommended by my banker.

Keep a bullet grocery list on your phone. I have 3 I use …for Aldi, Wally World, and BJs on occasion.
Aldi is for my essentials. Eggs, butter, bacon, coffee, half n half, bread, cheese, canned goods, baking items, spices.
Walmart for things Aldi doesn’t carry.
BJs for wine🤗 meat in bulk, batteries 48 pack, etc (maybe 4 times a year)

I am digging through my condiments and using up the rarely used one's for flavoring my meals. Add Buffalo sauce to tomato paste to top a meatloaf. Use the heels of bread toasted and seasoned for breadcrumbs or croutons. To not feel deprived during a no spend months, do simple delicious food. I make jello with orange slices (halo, or tangerine size)in it. Then get whipped cream, a small dollop, and everyone is happy. Add chicken broth to a bag of frozen vegetables, and you have soup. You can throw in rice or pasta to make it more filling.

Before paying a medical bill, call and ask if they offer a prompt pay discount. If you are paying in full, they may give you a 10% discount.

Going into my first no spend January. I tend to be a project person. Buy this extra thing to do this with it. To keep myself occupied planning on cleaning out spare bedroom, outdoor sheds, re-organizing Christmas decorations, purging, packing up stuff not in use. Only extras will be to buy more plastic storage totes, moving bags and vacuum bags. We need to be more ready to move out of our house to avoid the stress and last-minute problems.

For no spend January, I’ll be eating from my pantry and freezer. I plan on only buying fresh produce as needed. I have more than enough food in my pantry 😮
I’m thinking for 2024, I will do every other month pantry only eating.

For us, January is about playing with and using the Chrstmzs presents just received. It is a time to finish up incomplete projects, projects purchased for but not begun, create projects to use up left overs from previous projects, and do projects that use what we own. We also begin spring cleaning 'cause no one wants to do cleaning when the sun is out in the spring.

Kate, you make being mindful of where our money goes fun!
When we started to get our financial act together it was really my idea Sue wanted to do this but I'm one of those individuals that once I get into something I go all in. So my going all in was a bit much for Sue so she was happy to let me take control. To get our food budget down I decided the best course of action was for me to take over most of the food prep. That meant I had to teach myself how to cook.
A couple hundred meal flops later I can at least boil water LOL! Anyway, we do a lot of our shopping at Aldi and the rest at WalMart. Sometimes I will take 10 or 15 minutes on an isle and look at things that I normally don't buy and sometimes I will pick up something not knowing what I'm going to do with it. This week I bought a jar of curry sauce, I don't know what I'm going to do with it, we have never made anything with it but I'm going to figure something out, something different and at $2.65 a jar not too much money if it flops.

Tortillas heck yeah! Pasta, rice, whatever meat is on sale, cheese, frozen veggies, beans, yogurt & eggs.
Something I did that seems simple but I was putting off is actually paying all the bills I had stuffed back into the envelope. Online bills are easy, but those unexpected paper bills like medical stuff were just to easy to ignore. How stupid of me to let 1 for only $20 go to collections!🤦🏽‍♀️
    No more in 2024!

After a great deal of thought and consideration, I decided that I will keep my "Self-care Saturday routine" in my budget. Except I will make sure I'm getting the best prices. I still get my hair done every other Saturday, but instead of spending $70 at the salon I go to a beauty school that still does a very good job for $40. I also deep condition at home the night before so I don't need to pay extra when I get there. I still go get my dip manicure and brow wax, but I called around and to many nail salons in my area and made an appointment at the salon that is the least expensive. I also have found I can go every 8-10 weeks to get my brows done since I can pluck here and there at home to keep them looking presentable. I also exfoliate my feet nightly in the bath so they stay soft and smooth and I'm not in urgent need for a pedicure. For me this is important and keeps me feeling my best. ❤
