If I was to hazard a guess on the black gunk, MDF is a composite board, literally cast from wood fibres in resin and other gunk to form the sheet. Same as chipboard. I'd say that the black gunk is the burnt residue from that resin/glue binder. The smoke can also be toxic.
Really fun video to watch (and I LOLed quite a few times) but I’m going to be honest, the effort involved here is way more than most people would bother to go through. Investing in a FDM 3D printer will be significantly less effort and mess. Been using a Bambulab A1 printer and they are as plug-and-play as you can get.
Fascinating, a great watch, many thanks! Very much agree that embellishments are key with 'basic' terrain options, I've been pleasantly surprised with how good simple cardboard terrain can look once some extra paint/flock/tufts are added. Also, just wanted to check if your Mighty Ape affiliate link is still active, not listed on your last few video's Description, but as a fellow Kiwi I always try and use to try and send some support your way.
Awww thanks so much mate! Unfortunately Mighty Ape are no longer doing affiliates so I don't have anyone here anymore. Closest I have is Gap Games in Australia. Appreciate the thought though! 🙏
Yep...MDF greebles are superb for 'bits'. The little rectangle cut-outs make perfect bricks. Slap them on a piece of tape and spray them brick red, etc. The window shapes can be used all over the place for all kinds of stuff...
Thank god for time laps helping out aye! 😂 Cracking video once again man, the casual use of every day bits and bobs for details always blows my mind. We just wont talk about the shameful bin wadte moment 😜🙌
That's a very cool machine, but I'm pretty sure I can't have that in my apartment. I have just gotten a Creality 3D printer, and I have already made some very nice ruins for 40k. It's also super cost effective. Anyway. Thanks for the product review. It's nice to see a bunch of new technology that we can use for the hobby.
In Australia there is many local blokes manufacturing terrain for local communities, for 150 bucks Aus I can get either half a board in thematic terrain, or a whole board in basic tournament mdf terrain. For the price of one plastic gw building I can basically get a whole tables worth of terrain (usually leftover space on the mdf board is used to make basic tokens which is also handy as all buggery)
Isn't that always the case? "FREE terrain from junk! Step 1: power up the $5000 CNC machine..." Anyway, there are online stores that do custom laser cutting and engraving, and they still end up a fraction of thecost of GW kits. Or you can get a fret saw and a whoooole lot of patience...
Yeah I appreciate the irony haha! Of course you could get a laser cutting firm to do it all for you and it will still be waaaay cheaper than GW. Thanks for watching 😁
This is not the Rohan terrain video... Nor is it Middle-earth... But it was great fun (with your special touch), and I did pick up a trick I hope to use on my Middle-earth projects
Whenever I see a GW price from a place that uses dollars, my local prices feel almost acceptable. Almost :) In other news, my 3D printer has been working overtime. So many great models to print, and the time it takes is a great excuse to actually paint something!
nice video, I've subscribed you I don't understand why people buy overpriced GW terrain either, but I see it more from the perspective of someone who owns 2 3D printers and there are plenty of nice 3D files for printing a CNC laser would of course be great, I'm a little jealous, but for me there are a few problems the smoke development in a rented apartment and in a non-smoking household, that's just difficult to implement, with your own workshop or garage it might be more of a thing... then the purchase costs, compared to good 3D printers I have to say that even cheap lasers are still pretty expensive and then I would probably have to invest a bit more money to buy a laser with a decent housing, not one of those open ones where there's just the scaffolding I think that would help to minimize the dangers of the laser, like looking into the laser, the toxic fumes and the risk of fire
@dicedrinksanddadjokes no. It cost money so I was trying to use the software the laser came with but the interface looks like trying to fly a commercial airliner...
Yeah... irony haha! I actually had a lot of fun with this terrain in the end and have had my mind changed about it. Most stuff I've seen is just horrible and just needs some effort to make look good. Thanks for watching
That burnt brown stuff is burnt resin. Both the natural stuff from the wood particles in the MDF and, even more worrying, the oil based plastic resin those wood particles are soaked in before being pressed into sheets. Both of those are also in that smoke and will cause cancer if breathed in regularly but it's the larger part of all that smoke that's coming from the oil based resin holding the wood fibers together. Also in the smoke is going to be a lot of atomized particles of the MDF. This is a well known problem to woodworkers who use MDF to make templates and jigs. We wear respirators and have air filters going when cutting into the stuff with any tools. Those particles settle in your lungs and cannot be expelled by your body. Your body recognizes them as foreign and not being able to get rid of them they encapsulate them. The tissue that encapsulates the toxin have been known to turn cancerous particularly when they are encapsulating a known carcinogen. It's also filling up space in your lungs meant for air and has been shown to lead to breathing problems. If you're going to keep the laser cutter and use it then it would be good to look up some of the DIY vented enclosures others have built for them. A proper vented enclosure can also prevent damage to the laser which can occur from operating in all that smoke.
Yikes! I was wearing a mask the whole time but yeah I do need to sort out that extraction fan! Thanks for the detailed response mate, I appreciate that 🙏

Hey, I designed that stuff! 😂
Heyyy!!! Dude I love it! So good man, was a lot of fun to work with! 🤩
The maker's area at the library in my uni hates you, because I didn't stop using their laser cutter till I used every single one of your designs.
Post your work and make videos! It looks great!
Your stuff is amazing Bilbostomper! ❤️🇳🇴
@@eduardwithau This needs to be higher, libraries and maker spaces often have a good to great MDF cutter and are between cheap and free to use!
I can't lie, as a fellow kiwi, this is probably one of my favourite under-rated channels.
Thanks mate!!! Trying to keep the dream alive down here in the South Pacific haha!
Same, and same!
@ajsl yay!! Thanks!
Don’t even wargame and I still enjoy the videos! Found you through Zorpazorp and have subbed. Love the kiwi humour :)

Since i have start building kits from kromlech hive city... i absolute love mdf terrain❤... greetings from germany😊
Guten Tag! Thanks for watching 😊
Just got a laser cutter of my own not too long ago, thank you for showcasing these terrain options!
Looks fantastic for Stargrave!
Cooool!!!! Thanks for watching 🙏
All those little bits you threw away are perfect terrain. Hex pavers, bricks, etc.
You also should give the terrain maker a shout out.
Haha yeah I realise that now! 🤦♂️
What a great set of buildings. And an even better video. Love it. The final reveal of them all with the add on and effects is great.
Glad you liked it James! 😊
Love it! You sir....have another fellow Kiwi subscriber! Happy new year from Auckland.
And to you too!!! Thanks very much for the sub 🙏
Also if your spaypaint the prices different colors before gluing. It goes along way
Wow. That turned out really nice looking. Ive not seen MDF terrain look that good before. Also solid stop motion work.
Thanks dude! Yeah the stop motion was fun, took an insane amount of time for that short little sequence haha! 😅
@@dicedrinksanddadjokes Should have gone with montage. Then you could magically assemble 9 things at the same time in different frames!
Who knew MDF could look so good! Loved the stop motion 👏❤🎉

Sick animation on that arrow to the head!
Haha yeah man! My boy is an aspiring animator with a big imagination! 🤩
maaan i just got a wire cutter, keep looking at airbrushes, and now i have this on my list XD wicked
Yeah it’s a slippery slope! 😂
This looks amazing, you would never guess it was mdf really nice work mate, as always
Thanks so much man! Glad you like it 🙏
I wont say, that I will buy a laser cutter (mainly because I have no place for a smoking machine), but the output is awesome! Great video!
Haha yeah fair enough, I really need to sort out that extraction fan! My garage stinks of smoke now haha 😅
Oh man. I could have used a small baggie-full of those small punch out bits that you just scraped off and threw into the rubbish bin!!! Aaaargh
Ok you saying that has just made my brain realise I could have totally used them for bolts and stuff!! Hahaha I'm an idiot! 🤦♂️

It's the glue in the mdf. That's what's making the resin on the plate
Pro Tip: the aquarium section of your local pet store is a great place to scavenge for scatter terrain

Looks amazing! Not sure what it's advantages are though over a much cheaper FDM printer though. Great video nonetheless!
Thanks! I guess long term, MDF is a lot cheaper than filament, and they’re a heck of a lot faster too! But yeah FDM printers are awesome for sure!

laser cutting aka carpentry with a phaser.

MDF gives off mildly toxic fumes and smells bad. 3d printed is more detailed than MDF and safe and once made.
