    Just to put it into perspective how busted Serie is, episode 27 confirmed that her suppressed mana is equal to Frieren’s unsuppressed mana, and her suppression is so good that even a fellow S tier mage like lernen did not notice her suppressed mana fluctuating not even once in his decades of knowing her and being around her. That’s why Serie smirked when Fern noticed her mana fluctuating almost immediately. Fern’s potential is absolutely insane, she could very much be the next Flamme, or perhaps even greater.

      @@xarq6 No he legitimately mean's Serie's suppressed mana is equal to Frieren's unsuppressed mana. Meaning Serie's actual unsuppressed mana quantity is magnitudes greater than Frieren's. Makes sense since Serie is much older than Frieren, though the exact amount I'm not sure about, but Frieren in elf years is just past adolescence, meanwhile Serie is a full-fledged adult in elf years.

      there is a tiny nuance ppl usualy don't think about. Serie shows way more mana that Frieren does, its harder to find fluctutions in a big aura than a small one. i mean, its still obvious Serie have more mana than Frieren, she's older and she's a dedicated mage for her entire life. but the question is how much more. and yes, ppl who think thay always show 1/10 of their mana just straight go f@%k yourself, even Frieren shows different aura betwin EP10 and EP18, which means she can change the rate betwin shown and real mana at will. Serie most likely can change the ratio too. so the main question is how much more, it may be not even twice Frieren's mana, or it can be 100 times, we never know unless Serie release it.

    • @Renryo
      @Renryo 14 дней назад +1

      @@Circle9ru well the 1/10 thing isnt exactly unreasonable. After all the reason Frieren suppresses her mana to 1/10 is because Flamme told her to because thats the way she was taught to do it, and who was the one that taught Flamme? Serie. So that rule probably originated from her, as we can see she suppresses her mana as well

    • @joseserrano7052
      @joseserrano7052 14 дней назад +1

      Well we dont know how much Serie supressed her mana, and she's not used to do that so i doubt she's suppressing most of her mana like Frieren does... Im sure she just supressed it enough to be fluctuating and test the mages.

    My favorite bit of subtext in these episodes is that as far as Frieren is concerned, the "useless" flower spell is the most useful spell she's ever learned, because it's the spell that brought together the party that slayed the demon king.
    Edit: My 2nd favorite bit of subtext is the fact that we now have context for the Himmel's cryptic smile in the flower spell flashback from Episode 2. Because now we know that wasn't his first time seeing Frieren cast that spell.

    I just noticed, when we see Himmel walking away saying "It would be embarrassing when we met again", it's the same shot of his back that Frieren flashed back to at the burial way back in Episode 1. I wonder if she was recalling him saying that as they buried him.
    As for the fight with the demon king, I have to assume we won't get to see that in a flashback until they actually reach Ende, presumably close to the finale of the whole story.

    Never take Serie’s words at face value. She says the flower spell is useless while sitting in a room full of well maintained flowers. She says she disappointed in her student but she’s really disappointed that he won’t be around for much longer, thus never achieving a greater potential. If she never wanted another human student, she would never try to recruit fern who has potential. When talking negative about frieren’s master, she is also subtly reminiscing the life of her dead student with the only other person who knew her. She’s literally a tsundere of godly proportions. Honestly, she might even be more in tune with her emotions than frieren.

    There's a thing that maybe not everyone has spotted but yes - in fact that huge amount of mana Serie was producing, was fluctuating, means she was actually SUPRESSING her mana.
    Yes, Series Supressed mana was equal to Frierens entire mana pool, its terrifying to think how much mana Serie actually has if she full releases it.
    That being said, great series Mike, was cool seeing your reactions, onto the next ones we go~!

      its not terrfying, its interesting. because they can choose how much they show. the reason Serie shows this much is because she's the head of magic organization, so aura this big shows any other mage who's the boss here. im sure Serie can supress it even more to tiny aura like Frieren does, but she doesn't because of said reason. untill the moment Serie release her mana we won't know how much she have.

    Sad thing is that it's gonna be a LONG time before S2 comes out if they are planning to stick with Madhouse. I'm talking about 5-6 years minimum here. The Animation Producer of Frieren, Yuuichirou Fukishi will be moving on to another project with Shingo Natsume, the Director of OPM s1 and sunny boy. And that's not even the main reason. The director of Frieren, Keiichiro Saito will be also busy with cloverwork's Bocchi the rock season 2. But since currently Cloverworks is busy with 2 split cour season of Elusive Samurai anime, Bocchi's production is probably not gonna start in next two years. Cloverworks only has one main pipeline and it's busy with elusive samurai right now. So yeah either the producers wait for the original staff to come back or they give it to another studio just like aot or opm.

    One thing that I really like about Serie’s test is that it proves that both she is right and Frieren is too, in their own way.
    On one hand, Serie is right that spending so long sequestered alone, just to learn how to suppress her mana was a waste of time for Frieren. Frieren did not and has not truly lived until these past 80 years, until that mere 10 year journey, and in the end, all of her practice in suppressing her mana came to nothing before the Demon King, who was able to see that yes, she was suppressing her mana. She failed at doing the one thing that she had trained for 900 years to do. She could have used those 900 years to help people, to travel, to learn of the world.
    On the other hand, Frieren is correct. Serie’s entire worldview surrounding magic as a tool for power that can only be expressed through strength is fundamentally flawed. Magic is a thing that transcends such crude and petty notions as power and strength, and these spells of battle are the weakest and least impressive expression of magic that there can be, like taking a gemstone and using it as a hammer, and magic’s use as a weapon betrays nothing short of a damnable lack of imagination. The spell that saved the world was a spell to create a field of flowers, not some mighty spell of war magic, not magic for revenge, but magic for peace, magic for friendship, magic for helping, and yes, magic for love.

    • @Circle9ru
      @Circle9ru 15 дней назад +1

      nah, dude, you misunderstand things. supressing mana is not the only thing Frieren learned in those years. remember EP26, Frieren's clone hit Fern with some spell she couldn't even detect. after they killed the clone she said that last time she used it 80 yeears ago, so Frieren developed this spell in those years before Himmel's party. also she become way stronger in those years aswell. when Flame first meet her, she killed a demon general and some other demons and was exhausted, but current Frieren didn't even break a sweat in a fight with Aura's army, that huge difference.

    • @comandantegorrion7271
      @comandantegorrion7271 15 дней назад

      @@Circle9ru Here’s the thing, though, we actually know that Frieren is very weak as far as thousand year old elf mages go, and that is because she spent so long focusing on suppressing her mana that she sacrificed learning spells and gaining more mana to do so. It isn’t until recently, i.e. during the mere 10 year adventure, that she actually started expanding her repertoire.
      But that’s only the part that matters to Serie’s fundamentally flawed view of magic. More importantly, because she dedicated herself so totally to revenge (in such a way that ended up not actually mattering), she didn’t *live* during those 900 years.

      @@comandantegorrion7271 Serie never said that Frieren is weak. She said that Frieren is relatively unskilled for her age. However, given her extreme tsun-ness, we can't even rely on this statement too much.
      Also, Serie may even be a bit of a hypocrite here since we know that she's also suppressing her mana and yet we don't know how she ranks among the mages of her own age.

      @comandantegorrion7271 14 дней назад

      @@Circle9ru Damn, that reading comprehension is piss poor. That’s not what I said at all.
      Frieren is powerful compared to human mages and even a good number of demon mages such as aura because she has a literally hundreds of years on them. When compared to other thousand-year-old elf mages, not that there are many of those left, we have been told that she is relatively weak.
      The reason for this is because she spent nine centuries primarily focusing on learning how to suppress her mana, as opposed to the skills and mana pool that would make her the caliber of mage that would be expected of an elf of her age.

    These last few episodes, while not having the action packed fight scenes, were still some of the best episodes in the series.
    And Serie's scenes were definitely the highlight.
    Her revealing that she was actually suppressing her mana, her suppressed mama being equal to Frieren's Unsuppressed mana, Her immediately noticing Land's clones and to its full extent even, her not letting Ubel get a second's info on her so Ubel wouldn't copy her power, Fern noticing her mana fluctuations, and ofc how can i forget her failing streak.

    If you watch the fight scene between Lernen and Frieren, you'll notice that when Frieren's defense shard flies past Lernen in 0.3 sec, it projects an image of Lernen when he was young. If Lernen had fought against Frieren when he was younger, it could have been a very spectacular battle. Unfortunately, human life is limited, and he doesn't have much time left. i loved all the "interview" part. First of all Serie failing Frieren, as Frieren predicted, to hopefully spur her growth in other areas now that her mana concealment is very refined (still not refined as Serie but still), and Serie also knows that the certificate has no value for Frieren anyway.
    Land really does have guts tho, he really walked in to meet the most powerful mage in history, and thought he could trick her with some clone bs, lil bro is a few thousand years too young to get one over Serie lmaooo
    Also loved the part where Serie is disappointed that Lernen never saw her mana fluctuating, this is also i think why Serie says that suppressing mana is useless, she is such a monster that even her suppressed state is equal to the second most powerful mage in the world (probably), so most demons would think twice about fighting her even while suppressed.
    All in all amazing anime, the best i've seen in many many years, and one of the best ever for sure.

    I see that you are still confused about Serie's personality. Serie is just your typical tsundere, what she says is not what she truly means, sometimes its the opposite, she really does love her students, she even remembered exactly the moment when Flamme is a kid

    Important lore that a lot of people get wrong
    Short version; Visualization is important, but it's not the be-all-end-all and Frieren doesn't fall for mimics. So, sure you can joke about Frieren losing to a mimic, but if you're being serious, then I believe that you're wrong and you can check my explanation below for further details.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Long version;
    (I) The magic system and especially the thing about visualization
    A spoiler-free explanation of the magic system in the Frieren world is as follows:
    There are 4 components to a mage's magic-casting in the Frieren world:
    (1) Mana: How much mana/magical-energy they have.
    Note that other than a mage's initial mana-capacity, which is affected by the following;
    (a) The mana in each of the parents when the child was conceived (and maybe even the mother's mana until birth). This is because mana is to some extent inherited (eg, Ehre benefitting from being Lernen's grandaughter).
    (b) MAYBE your race (ie, demon vs elf vs dwarf vs human). However, it's unknown how this affects your initial mana-capacity (eg, Flamme in her 20s-30s? and Aura in her 500+ years of age, had similar amounts of mana).
    (c) Other currently unknown factors (eg, maybe the Goddess' Blessing since Heiter had a ton of mana even in his 20s?).
    a mage's mana-capacity is directly proportional to the amount of time that they have been training it (which correlates to their age).
    (2) Control: How much mana and how precisely they can control it. This also includes controlling spells after they've been fired off (eg, Frieren curving her Basic Offensive Magic around Fern's Basic Defensive Magic).
    Note that even raw mana can be used to achieve simple yet effective results if a mage has a high degree of control (eg, Frieren defending her neck against Draht's wire). This point will be further expanded upon in a later arc as well.
    Another very important case of mana control, is the act of limiting output. Any decent mage (with a good amount of mana control) can temporarily limit their mana (for the purpose of surprising a foe). This is called Concealment. It's basically a mage reducing their mana output from 100% to as close to 0% as they can, while they try to sneak attack an enemy.
    However, after the sneak attack, there is no value to doing this, since an enemy with magical abilities can probably detect that the attacker is reducing their mana output from the fluctuations that they see through their own mana detection (and they can even detect the attacker's unconcealed mana level, thus making the limiting completely useless at this point). Examples:
    (a) Fern sneak attacking Lugner in S01E08.
    (b) Lugner sneak attacking Fern in S01E09.
    Suppression, on the other hand, is the technique of limiting your mana output at all times (to say 10%). This is a useful technique because it can easily create situations where your enemies underestimate you. A mage that performs Suppression, can also do Concealment and how that works is as follows:
    They reduce from 10% to as close to 0% as they can, and then go back to 10% after they lift their Concealment.
    Now, the reason why Suppression isn't feasible for most HUMANs (and here I literally mean just humans and not dwarves and definitely not elves) is that to be able to fool demons and monsters, you either need to be very talented at mana control like Flamme and Fern, or have a very long time (ie, at least a few centuries) to practice Suppression to reduce the fluctuations as much as possible like Serie and Frieren. Thus, making this technique not worth it, since the return for your time-investment is so little. As Serie says, you're better off training other things.
    As for why Suppression is a dishonesty and mockery of magic, consider the following examples, which are somewhat equivalent to what mages practicing this technique are doing:
    (a) A martial master taking part in a beginner martial arts tournament.
    (b) A soldier disguising themself as a civilian and then attacking a target.
    Basically, mages performing Suppression are hiding their power to create a situation where their opponent is led to underestimating them. This would make them dishonest, but also shows them to be not truly proud of their achievements in magic to be confronting their foes straight with their full force and without trickery.
    (3) Spell: The magical formulas that they know and are able to use. Examples: Basic Offensive/Defensive Magic, Reelseiden.
    Note that the spell formula dictates what is possible or impossible. Examples:
    (a) Basic Offensive Magic cannot pierce dragon scales or Basic Defensive Magic, regardless of the attacker's visualization. Otherwise, Frieren would've taught Fern how to do it when she asked Fern to attack the Solar Dragon in S01E05 in the former case, and Basic Defensive Magic would actually be useless in the latter case.
    (b) Frieren's spell to clean a bronze statue not being usable for a stone statue. If it was purely a visualization based system, then there is absolutely no reason for why Frieren wouldn't be able to use the folk spell in S01E16 to clean Kraft's & Unknown-Priest's statues.
    (4) Visualization: Needed to activate/use a spell since a mage cannot make something happen if they can't clearly/exactly picture the outcome. This is actually very similar to how it is in real life as well.
    Note that a weak visualization might further limit a spell, but a strong visualization cannot strengthen a spell. Examples:
    (a) Regardless of Aura's visualization, her scales were already tilting towards Frieren, even though Aura was unaware that Frieren had more mana at that point. If it was a purely visualization based system, then Aura should've been able to dominate anyone including Frieren.
    (b) Ubel's visualization is ONLY taking advantage of Reelseiden's formula to cut anything in a 5? meter radius. Even she is unable to fully maximize the spell, since she cannot visualize cutting Basic Defensive Magic. However, she can visualize cutting more things than most people, so she's still a very proficient user of this spell.
    --------------------------------------------------
    In summary, the visualization component of the magic is just like in real life; you will surely fail if you have a 'bad' mindset, but a 'good' mindset does NOT guarantee success (ie, a 'good' mindset is a necessary, but insufficient condition for success since external factors are still a thing).
    Visualization is important, but it's not the be-all-end-all. Spells determine what's possible or not, and a mage's visualization can make them achieve between 0% to 100% of a spell's potential.
    They cannot just bs visualize/imagine themself into winning and/or doing-the-impossible.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Also, there is technically one more component, which may fall under Control, but since I'm not convinced that it definitely does (and also because it's not completely crucial for just casting magic alone as a singular mage), I've written it below as a separate point:
    (5) Detection: How accurately a mage can detect mana in a certain radius with themself at the center. This is extremely important for battle, since it relates to:
    (a) Finding hidden enemies (who are probably concealing their mana).
    (b) Becoming aware of surprise attacks not caught by the physical senses (eg, being shot from behind).
    (c) Not underestimating a strong foe who's pretending to be weaker than they are (ie, mages who suppress their mana like Serie, Flamme, Frieren, and Fern).
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    The above info is from:
    S01E02: First half of the episode with Frieren teaching Fern.
    S01E03: Second half of the episode on Killing Magic.
    S01E05: Second half of the episode with the Solar Dragon.
    S01E08: Pretty much all of it. :)
    S01E09: Pretty much all of it. :)
    S01E10: Pretty much all of it. :)
    S01E15: First half of the episode on Goddess' Magic.
    S01E16: Second half of the episode with the statue cleaning quest.
    S01E20: Pretty much all of it. :)
    S01E21: Pretty much all of it. :)
    S01E26: Pretty much all of it. :)
    S01E27: Second half of the episode with the CMA heads meeting.
    (CMA = Continental Magic Association & CMA heads = Serie + 1st class mages)
    S01E28: Credits showing Ehre introducing Lernen to Wirbel, which when combined with the info from S01E20 with Ehre & Wirbel, allows us to conclude that Lernen is Ehre's grandfather.
    (II) Frieren vs Mimics
    Putting aside jokes and memes, I have seen far too many people and even video essays on RUclips (some of which claiming to be serious analysis types) thinking/saying that Frieren falls for mimics. The truth however is;
    Frieren doesn't fall for mimics. She chooses to take the risk because she doesn't lose anything of value (and because the mimic-check spell is only 99% accurate).
    She loses a little time while in the mimic and then later when fixing her hair (but she doesn't care about that because she has practically infinite time), and suffers a little reputation damage (but she doesn't care about how others view her all that much). On the other hand, she may gain something.
    In summary, she loses nothing and may gain something so why not try them all?

      that series have a great core idea, but the scenario doesn't work with it. for that idea of making food of monsters and other things in dungeon, it should have Slayers-like story. the fact that EP1 start with them have to hurry and save Lias sister, makes every moment with spending time looking for a specific ingredient for coocking looks cringe. if they had nowhere to to hurry and simply explore the dungeon, it would work.

    She ridicules Flamme for having the spell to create flowers as her favorite, yet has a flower garden made from magic, acknowledges Frieren's power but fails her because their visions don't align, says she wasted her time training her human apprentices but remembers all their faces and favorite spells, and the cherry on top, she bloody bans Frieren from the continental magic association for a 1000 years like a child whose favorite toy got broken by someone🤣🤣
    All these millennia of living, but she's barely matured. Wonder if its true for all elves cause the only one who both looks and acts like an adult is Kraft.

    Aww, no mention of Serie's magic being suppressed and Lernen missing it while Fern was the only one who caught that there were fluctuations. Would have loved to see the reaction of Serie's suppressed mana being as large as Frieren's unsuppressed mana. Shows there difference in strength.
