{Failed} sealant to seal the gap between the glass roof and the wall without backer rod
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 3 окт 2022
- In this video, I will be showing you how to seal the gap between your glass roof and wall that failed within three months. We found that the sealant was shrinking, causing the waterproofing paint to tear off after two months. Rainwater seeped through the tears in the paint, causing a leakage. A solution was deduced based on constructive comments given by viewers. Thank you for helping out!
Update:
We're back with an update on the rainwater leakage problem. We have been testing the solution we came up with and have found that it's working great! We'll keep you posted on how it goes.
Thank you for all of your help in helping us solve this problem!

You wouldn’t believe all the things I have found done wrong in this manufactured home. Including stupid crap done to keep from throwing garbage away. They actually stapled box strapping bands to the underlayment with 2 1/2” staples before laying the carpet down. What’s your suggestion to make it better?
@@CTBLiew I’m a window installer here in the UK. Try and get hold of some PVC trim to bridge the gap. That gap looks about 20mm wide, I’d never dream of totally filling it with silicon. Especially if someone is going to see it.
If you have to use sealant for the whole joint then less is more. Don’t let the sealant come too proud of the finish surface level otherwise it ends up all over the wall and the glass. As soon as you’ve applied the sealant, spray it with soapy water. I use a high concentration of 1 part soap, 3 parts water. Once you’ve sprayed your sealant, spray your finger and run it along nice and smooth. Make sure your fingers are nice and clean before you do this. Use some tissue paper to wipe sealant off if any sticks to your fingers. Don’t be afraid to really soak the mastic before you smooth it with your finger. Finally, don’t press too hard or the sealant will drag with your finger and you’ll end up with little creases. The same thing happens if you put too much sealant in the joint. Hope this helps
They know home owner are not going up there that's why they pig is making that mess

Tape off the borders and use backer rod.
Would you recommend bitumen tape?
He's talking about masking tape(aka 3m blue painters tape). Mask off the wall and glass to provide a straight consistent line. Stuff backer rod until just before flush(3/8" maybe). Fill the gap and smooth it with a set of caulking spoons or wet finger. If this is on your roof where only the passing birds will see it, don't worry about how it looks. I've used similar stuff when it dries, it feels like rubber like a car tire
Thanks for clarification. It was for a glass roof fitted with turbine ventilator.
I’m really concern if these elastomer will be able to seal of this expansion joint between a glass and wall. I wonder how long these elastomer will hold. A record of this allows me to learn from the rest. I got surprised just as the others when the contractor did that. The overall project is as shown here: No need electric turbine ventilator installed on glass roof idea for Greentech

Painters are spraying the kit with water before stretching it flat with a knife. Nice straight finish. I don't know if if can be applied to this product.
Thanks for your time.
The glass should be captured in some type of framing then structurally caulked with a structural caulking like Dow Corning 795 or 799 that’s compatible with the PVB inner layer
That’s something new. I was think using the Z-profile flashing. Structure caulking for building joint answer my quest about how to the base flashing prevent water from seeping into the glass. Thanks mate!
This is good! Some haters think this is garbage, but they are wrong. This not silicone. This is an elastometric compound that works best when maximumly worked into contact on the substrate is achieved, here this process is demonstrated against a textured surface and guarantees to have no air pockets. This is part 1, in part 2 after dry, the glass is cleaned up with a blade. The only flaw is he is not wearing a proper glove and generally use of a backer rod in the gap produces less waste and better fill up.
Oh. No wonder the contractor are confident that it will work.
In Florida we use Tremco dynomic, once it touches that wall and you push it in like that. IT AINT GOIN NOWHERE. only issue I could think of , it not being able to dry because it was too cold. In that case , you can buy the fast drying version of same product
Good information. We have Tremco dynomic here in Malaysia. I did notice it was a green packing not sure if it is Tremco. I just learn that it is Tremco the brand for waterproofing. Good knowledge. I will try get this and use it for my next improvement on this topic. Thanks for helping me to growth. Check back and see how I will use this sealant.
I actually watched a program on TV the other day, and airplanes, cars, and other important things use versions of sealants / adhesives to hold everything together. they are actually made if you get top end stuff to be better than any other joint fastening space filler. I was amazed at what they could do with the good stuff.
example windshields used to have metal fasteners with rubber bushings. now it is all 3M adhesives. said to be far superior. so unless I know what product he is using and can actually research it (this guy probably not) I will hold judgement as new products come out all the time and possibly the climate, altitude, or some other purpose calls for that specific use. but traditionally, you would be correct.
But not appropriate for this application. Dow corning 795. Made for it. But agree marine sealant 5200, strong as it gets.

Maybe backer rod helps prevent shrinkage.
Cut the tip at a wider angle so you get a bigger bead of silicone/caulk, this way you can bridge the gap and create a smooth flat finish in one smooth motion. If you do happen to make a mess like in the video then you can use caulking tools to create a perfect edge, they are really good I use mine quite often.
If you can't afford a caulking tool set you can carve some from sticks and use with soapy water. Look online for tutorials how to do it
