    Dan, this is really a great training session because we can watch clearly the difference in quality of shots between an advance player and a pro player. It is highly educational for those that want to develop their technique to watch a pro player coaching an advanced player. Wish more pro players can teach like Dimitrij so more videos like this are uploaded to the internet.

  • @canicetang8837
    @canicetang8837 4 года назад +52

    This is the precise reason why many of the former professionals are excellent coaches. They have the right technique, tons of practises and lots of experiences. Plus they have the knowledge of the modern game with the adaptation of the equipment that changed the dynamics of the sport itself.
    Dima mentioned at the end of the video about 'closing up' because the traditional 'loop to loop' attack is largely negated by the harder ABS plastic less spiny table tennis balls. Therefore, the fundamental technique of 'power from the legs' is a lot more apparent to generate even more spins. Thus the player must need be closer to the table than looping from a distance.
    Hence Table Tennis is now having harder sponge in the rubber, various materials and advanced technologies to the paddle to customize each player for their maximum potential. These changes of adaptations now require a change of playing styles. There will no doubt be more changes ahead as the sport will evolve itself.

    • @cytivrat
      @cytivrat 4 года назад +3

      Despite I agree with your post, closing up that Dima mentioned is not about distance, it is about your racket angle at the end of the loop.

    • @-danR
      @-danR 4 года назад +1

      Everything I gained in power and momentum transfer-optimally-I got from shadow-stroking swinging light and heavy practice barbells. Just the bare steel bar, and a 15 lb weight. Playwise*, I was a mediocre player, but powerwise the better players were surprised at the speed and spin. There's nothing in this video I can see that could add to that training; when you add weight to your stroke, you're automatically forced to use all your muscles in a proper chain of energy transfer from legs and body through shoulders, arm, wrist to the racquet.
      _______
      * I followed a philosophy of attack-everything, return of serve, 3rd-ball. The lack of variety meant good players knew what to expect.
      In order to make this _style_ work, you need to have had top coaching from junior days.

    best tip for me: not beeing "afraid" and leaning back... but trusting in your backhandshot and go for it. I do too often find myself in trying to play "safe", therefore leaning a bit back and then not hitting the ball well enough or even at all / too far from the body... having a shot without power

  • @owenallenaz
    @owenallenaz 4 года назад

    At 3:40 is an excellent example of the difference in the retraction of the backhand between Dimi and Dan. Dan's blade only travels about 45degrees rotationally with every stroke, if that. While Dimi gets the blade all the way back and almost pointed at his body providing the space for a powerful forearm and wrist movement providing him with somewhere around 120degrees of rotation. The extra space correlates to a huge amount more power and spin. Now, against the power of Dimi, I guarantee I could absolutely do no better. But it's a good lesson for all of our backhands in the importance of getting the wrist back.

    That was a great eye-opener. With that explosive backhand technique it makes sense that Dima generally prefers a softer blade. Especially for a European player. I used to play in Germany in the 90s and early 2000s and noticed that a lot of attacking players(I'm a chopper myself) would switch to carbon blades at a relatively low level. Now I live in the USA where I see a lot more Chinese trained players are coming through. These guys rarely play anything faster than a Stiga Clipper and also use a super explosive backhand technique.
