That's why the Orks want it so badly. There are many types of Titans, and Storm Herald is of the largest class, the Imperator or Emperor-class Titan. There aren't many of these around and not every Titan Legio (mech version of a space marine chapter) will have one within their ranks. There are a ton of different Legios and i don't think hard numbers are ever given about them. If i recall from the book, about 2 dozen Titans of Legio Invigilata are within and around Helsreach including Storm Herald. A Moderati is basically the second in command of a Titan, they focus on reading the Auspex (basically a sensor suite, they monitor comms chatter too) and generally serve as the primary advisor of the Princeps. A Princeps is an INSANELY rare person who can handle interfacing with the mighty Machine Spirits of the God Engines, though smaller Titans and Knights are easier to interact with and do not require the Princeps/Knight Operator to be sustained within the command casket, and instead pilot from a throne which plugs into their augmentation ports on their body. The voice you are hearing layered beneath the Princeps voice is the combination of her own voice echoing through interface with the Machine Spirit and her vocalizers simply having a masculine tone. Usually, Titans are crewed by 3 in the main cockpit with a Tech Priest who remains within the reactor to perform rituals and prayers while maintaining the Engine's Heart. The rest of the crew usually consists of minor engineers and the Skitarii guard to repel against any infantry that boards the Titan during combat. The Skitarii got done a bit dirty in this story, they're actually really effective fighters of the Mechanicus and field weapons that even Space Marines would shy away from. Templars, or really anyone outside the Mechanicus, don't see Titans as truly divine, but they are absolutely loved and admired for their devastating potential and the reminder they serve as what humanity can accomplish. Again, if you enjoy this, 100% add the book to your reading list as well as it's follow up, Blood and Fire.
Yes the book is amazing and immediately captivating. Its easy to understand why Boylan chose to animate this one, to invest so much of his free time into this above all of the other books he read. It’s been a while for me tho, correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t Princeps Zarha have a particularly trying time wrangling Stormherald? Like the titan actively fights against her at every turn.
@kr0w119 Spoilers below She's just really REALLY old and even before Helsreach she was thinking of her final Walk. It's less that Storm Herald is fighting her more fiercely, it's that she is no match for the Machine Spirit anymore. It knows this, and is largely biding it's time and allowing her to wrangle it while waiting for the perfect time to wrestle control from her. It's another scene that isn't very well covered IMO, though I do love the visual of her drowning in the Machine Spirits consciousness, the fact that she was out rampaging is super easily missed later on, along with the portrayal of Godbreaker being kinda lame
Me at the beggining: Cador, Bastilan, Primus, Artarion, Nerovar... "I'll never remember those names!" Me at the end: "I'll never forget those names..."
Titans are powered by onboard fusion reactors. The Princeps is the commanding officer of the Titan, aided by the Moderati as bridge officers, plus the rest of the crew. But the Princeps isn't just the senior officer, they are cybernetically connected to the Titan, seeing through its eyes and feeling its balance, its walk, its fusion heart, its shields and weapons. In a very real sense, the Princeps becomes a part of the Titan. And, just to make it even more interesting, Titans have a machine spirit, usually a pretty feisty one befitting a millenia-old God Engine. The Princeps partially merges with the machine spirit, directing it but also being guided by it. Only a rare minority of humans have the capacity to do this without being overwhelmed. Likely only a small fraction of debris from a space battle would actually fall to the planet's surface. Fleets (even Ork fleets) generally translate from the Warp back into realspace somewhere in the outer reaches of a star system, far away from the habitable planets. The initial space battles would typically take place in the outer system or mid system. Only debris from the last defence in orbital space would stand a chance of coming down, and even then most of it would end up floating around up there for a good long while before it was captured by gravity.
Thank you so much explaining all that! Its really cool how he they are able to be physically and mentally intuned , and it gives some creedence that maybe the adeptus mechanicus arent completely out to lunch! Would the titans technically be considered a "lost" technology? Or are they actively able to make more of them still? (Though i imagine in must take forever to complete one) Also thank you for letting me know about the space battles! Im still wrapping my head around the fact they actually do things that make sense (depending on whos in charge) in this universe! Also i guess im still in the mindset of "technology is a hold back" . ( battles taking place purely defensively, typically with the aid of space stations or supporting planetary elements. ) But everyone seems (due to one mistake or another) to be roughly on the same technology level at this point? Other then obviously the forces associated with chaos and the tyranids (i think) having their own unique aspects. (Obviously each race has their own tech to, im just speaking in general) :) Thank you so much for explaining all that though! I hope you enjoyed the video!
@@TheRealCenturion We're getting into the theological details now lol. On one hand, for simpler equipment, the machine spirit has always seemed to me like a hand-wavy explanation of tech by people who don't understand it any more and maintain it by rote, like this: "When uttering the incantation, mark well that the rod is upon and not within the intake. The second incantation should not be uttered until all the fumes have come forth, then the way shall be clear for the sacred words to penetrate unto the heart of the engine. If the mounting be hot say the third rune, if it be cold the fourth rune is more appropriate. For then the wrath of the engine will be aroused... " "Strike the first rune upon the engine's casing employing the chosen wrench. Its tip should be anointed with the oil of engineering using the proper incantation when the auspices are correct. Strike the second rune upon the engine's casing employing the arc-tip of the power-driver. If the second rune is not good, a third rune may be struck in like manner to the first. This is done according to the true ritual laid down by Scotti the Enginseer. A libation should be offered. If this sequence is properly observed the engines may be brought to full activation by depressing the large panel marked "ON" On the other hand, for larger and more complex things like vehicles, ships, titans, it really does seem like there's something more than just machinery going on. The theory I like best is that these items actually contain some AI, but that the AI is smart enough not to call attention to itself, since in the Imperium AI stands for Abominable Intelligence and is strictly prohibited as a reaction to the near-annihilation of life in the galaxy by the Men of Iron at the end of the Age of Technology and beginning of the Age of Strife. Are titans lost technology: some models are, yes. Examples survive but are precious and irreplaceable (awkward in a war machine). Other types are still made by certain forge worlds. Relative technology levels: the different races actually have some big differences. The Necrons have tech far far in advance of even humanity's Age of Technology height. The Tau are a young race who still understand their own tech, some of it is quite good. Eldar stuff is good too. Orky stuff is pretty primitive. Overall, more like different rather than necessarily better or worse a lot of the time.
Carsomir (the machine head guy) is a crew member of Storm Herald (the Titan) and is a member of the Adeptus Mechanicus, hence the robotics all over his face instead of flesh

12:10 he actually really has the codes, but he thought of Helbrecht and his sworn duty to his High Marshal in that moment, took a breather and realized that his rage about being left on the planed had taken him over for a moment. So he apologized (super duper ultra rare for an Astartes, especially even more so for one of the highest ranks in a Chapter) and just send a one way message.
5:51 that is a moderati, one of many support pilots of a titan. He is like all that are involved with titans a memeber of the adeptus mechanicus and what he is wearing well, when it comes to the mechanicus that could be anything maybe half if not more of his eternal organs are removed because they were deemed as insuficent and replaced with mechanical variants ore maybe its just a robe ore maybe it is armor. When it comes to the mechanicus never question it, they themselfs half the time dont even know how ore why their stuff works.
they know how their stuff works. It's nice meme, sure - but it's far from truth. They don't know how DAOT tech works, but aside from emperor nobody does.
@SapFeaRon during horus heresy shure they knew everything about the imperial technologies, but modern 40k definetly not. Shure many techpriesrs know much but most mechanicus memebers know very little about the tech they use on a daily basis.

22:50- Princeps Zaha (not sure if I got the name right) is able to manipulate the Titan's movements and even fire her weapons, but she still requires a crew to operate as she can't do all the work herself. There's also a maintenance crew on hand to handle repairs if her systems suffer damage, or as they would like to refer as the Machine's Spirit.

YO! A great video to check out at this break in Helsreach: “Leutin09 - ORKS - War is Life” First half of the video explains Orks, second half sets up all of their history leading to the invasion of HELSREACH!
thats not just a Titan.... Its an imperator class titan... They are VERY VERY VERY VERY Rare but maybe the most powerful weapon the imperium has on a battlefield
@@TheRealCenturion i am not too deep into that part of the lore but of course SIZE matters. BUT not just the size. I think Imperator class titans are not in production anymore (But i am not sure).
Titan classes reflect their battlefield roles and correspond to their size. Knights are technically titans but, being comparatively small aren't generally considered with the four main classes being (in order from smallest to largest): Warhounds (scouts), Reavers (support), Warlords (main line) and Imperator (like Invigilata seen here). Imperators are from before the Age of Strife, their designs lost to time. Each as much artifact as arsenal and the loss of one represents a considerable point of grief for the Imperium.
The guy you asked about that is like a zombie is one of the most horrifying realities of the Imperium of man. A servitor. As you noted, Abominable Intelligence aka A.I. is banned and considered techno heresy. But the Imperium still has need of automated machinery. Doors, Communications, Elevators, Assembly Lines and that sort. So when even the most basic of automated machinery borders on the fringes of A.I. what do you do? Well, the Imperiums solution is to take "undesirables" most often criminals, remember that what constitutes as a criminal in the Imperium is not as strict and can include things like not being a very good worker or talking back to a superior, are taken and lobotomized, dissected and augmented to be made into whatever is needed. This could be something like a P.A. system, like we saw, a automated refueling drone, which is what that guy in the beginning most likely, or even something as mundane as a automated door sensor. The true horror of the servitors is that the lobotomization procedure is not a very refined process and some servitors retain their personality but more often than not their ability to speak or do anything about it has been taken away. Very much a "I have no mouth and I must scream" type of horror. And servitors often live for centuries. In the game Darktide there is a medical station that is basically run by a servitor and sometimes it can malfunction and the servitor inside will start speaking in terrified and crazed ways. Often times asking to not be left alone or even asking you to kill them and end their suffering.
ahhhh! You guy sure are cracking that whip 😂 Love the motivation you guys have been giving me though! Those episodes will be up soon! Hope you enjoyed the video:)
09:30 - That's the thing. An Ultramarine would've done it in three days. And it would've been fun. edit: A Princeps has to psychically wrangle down the machine spirit of the titan once they are connected. They try to get a symbiotic relationship. Otherwise the Princeps would literally loose themself to the machine spirit and be drained out. An amniotic tank is often preferred by the Princeps but not necessary. Some even exist as merely a brain in a bowl. Titans are the god machines of war and they are holy at least to the Mechanicus but also to the rest of the Imperium.
It's important to remember that while the Imperium has banned AI in the 40k universe, it is not quite clear on whether Games Workshop means 'narrow AI', which is the best we have today, or 'broad/generalised AI', which is a benchmark humans have not achieved yet. The concept of there being two distinct forms of AI as I have laid out, has not properly filtered into the public consciousness yet. And Warhammer 40k took off long before this concept was well known. Theoretically, they've already achieved AGI (artificial general intelligence) by the 30th and 42nd millenium. It's highly likely they mean the latter. So it's entirely possible that they still have something like ChatGPT and all these other LLMs because they are examples of 'narrow AI'. Calculators are narrow AI, and I just can't reconcile the idea that calculators are banned in the Imperium.
Yeah, that would be a hard pill to swallow XD. I like your explanation and it definitely makes a lot more sense from what I have seen. Thank you for explaining! Hope you enjoyed the video :)
The different factions within the empirium are reluctant to work together, the space marines, the imperial guard, the mechanicus, the inquisition, etc... are independent of each other, so discussions and infighting is expected, in the most extreme cases, they have declared war on each other. Fun fact: Empirium worlds are free to govern themselves however they want, there are communist worlds, worlds where money dictates everything, more peaceful worlds that are not so different from our planet Earth today, and worlds dictated by conflict, feudal and feral worlds. Titans are divided into legions, here we have legio invigilata, a loyal legión of titans, and themselves part of the mechanicus, the techpriest adore the titans as idols of the machine god.
Fun fact on your fun fact: yes, you are free to govern your worlds however you see fit, as long as you pay THE IMPERIAL TITHE. EVERY TIME. FOREVER. IF ONE TITHE IS NOT COMPLETE OR UP TO PAR THEN YOU ARE NO LONGER FREE TO GOVERN YOUR WORLD, BECAUSE SOMEONE ELSE IS IN CHARGE NOW. AND HE HAS ONE MORE SERVITOR. But yeah, however you want to govern the world is fine.
Are all Titans Technically under the Mechanicus then? Also is it common that disagreements and war breaks out amongst the different factions? Or is it usually only in very extreme circumstances? Thank you for explaining that thought! Hope you enjoyed the video! :)
@TheRealCenturion yes, all titans are part of the mechanicus from building it to the pilot and the crew, the difference between titans and imperial knights is that, imperial knights are smaller and only have one pilot, wile titans will always have a crew
Disagreements can be very common, it depends on the situation, but sometimes they can be something as simple as a chapter of space marines helping the imperial guard but doing their own thing instead of following a shared strategy, or more complex issues, such as cultural or religious matters, the imperial creed, like the worlds of the imperium, is interpreted in a million ways.
I appreciate that! Im just making content on topics I find interesting , lots great recommendations from you guys and im so glad to have such a great audience along for the ride! Hope you enjoyed the video :)
You asked about the servitor, and i saw an explanation in comments. But there was no explanation as to WHY they exists. Basically as Bricky explained there was an AI uprising, at the end of the Dark Age of technology. Since then the rule is that any "computer" must have a human "core". So every computer/machine has a human brain as CPU. (fun fact there actually still are surviving AI's from the age of technology in the Mechanicus Systems, they identify as Tech priest and use fake identification codes. Basically pretending to call in remotely.... And no one knows this)
@BlackMoridin oh wow ! Thank you explaining that! I knew ai was illegal, so thats why it was like how are all these advanced cybernetics used just fine ? But having a human as a "core" makes a lot more sense. So they basically remove the ability for higher thought, so that your still a "human" with 40 - 60 percent of your body now machine XD. Also cool theres still some old ai kicking around! I appreciate the explanation!

@kr0w119 Spoilers below
She's just really REALLY old and even before Helsreach she was thinking of her final Walk.
Me at the beggining:
Cador, Bastilan, Primus, Artarion, Nerovar...
"I'll never remember those names!"
Me at the end:
"I'll never forget those names..."
(Though i imagine in must take forever to complete one)
Also thank you for letting me know about the space battles! Im still wrapping my head around the fact they actually do things that make sense (depending on whos in charge) in this universe!
Also i guess im still in the mindset of "technology is a hold back" . ( battles taking place purely defensively, typically with the aid of space stations or supporting planetary elements. )
But everyone seems (due to one mistake or another) to be roughly on the same technology level at this point? Other then obviously the forces associated with chaos and the tyranids (i think) having their own unique aspects. (Obviously each race has their own tech to, im just speaking in general) :)
Thank you so much for explaining all that though!
I hope you enjoyed the video!
@@TheRealCenturion We're getting into the theological details now lol.
On one hand, for simpler equipment, the machine spirit has always seemed to me like a hand-wavy explanation of tech by people who don't understand it any more and maintain it by rote, like this:
"When uttering the incantation, mark well that the rod is upon and not within the intake. "
"Strike the first rune upon the engine's casing employing the chosen wrench. If this sequence is properly observed the engines may be brought to full activation by depressing the large panel marked "ON"
On the other hand, for larger and more complex things like vehicles, ships, titans, it really does seem like there's something more than just machinery going on.
Everybody gangsta until the church starts walking. :D
ALso how much of anything is there in the Imperium .... most of those can be answered with "Yes." ;D
very true! Loved this whole series, StromHerald was awesome!
Hope you enjoyed the video!
As always link to the videos will be in the description! Go give them some love!
Love the support as always guys, Let me know any recommendations you have, and like this video for a part 3!
Ill see you guys in the next one!
Ah thank you for explaining that! I was reading some of what their role was, but I didint know what they looked like so thank you for pointing that out!
Hope you enjoyed the video :)
9:30 ‘NIIIIIIIIINNNNNNE DAAAAAAAAYYYYYYS’ - such awesome delivery of that line 😊
It really was! Makes me wanna try voice acting ngl XD
19:44 in 40k. You better go to church… because you don’t want the church coming to you.
@swordbrotherplatt9392 "everybody gangster till the church starts walking" XD had that meme pop up for me last night, your comment made me laugh XD
Hope you enjoyed the video :)
Thank you for explaining that! I was assuming it could not be just one entity required in the maintaining of a Titan that large! Good to know they have proper logistics for everything that you see for the most part.
Hope you enjoyed the video :)
7:52 war is won through logistics, all praise the Adeptus Administratum
True! And I really enjoy it when attention is brought to that fact in media!
ALL PRAISE
hope you enjoyed the video :)
The 40k addiction is sinking it's nails in.
The 40k rabbit hole opens like a yawning warp rift. Be careful ye who enter here.
YO! A great video to check out at this break in Helsreach: “Leutin09 - ORKS - War is Life”
First half of the video explains Orks, second half sets up all of their history leading to the invasion of HELSREACH!
Thats a good idea! I would really like to learn more about the Orks since I imagine we'll be seeing them a lot!
Thank you for the recommendation!
thats not just a Titan.... Its an imperator class titan... They are VERY VERY VERY VERY Rare but maybe the most powerful weapon the imperium has on a battlefield
What are the different classes of titans and what makes each class unique ? Is it purely size and armaments?
@@TheRealCenturion i am not too deep into that part of the lore but of course SIZE matters. BUT not just the size. I think Imperator class titans are not in production anymore (But i am not sure).
@@muratferguson4534 Ah got you! I guess thats up to me to check it out then!
Thank you for letting me know still.
Hope you enjoyed the video. :)
Get to work. 6-9 isn't gonna react to itself. 🤣
ahhhh! You guy sure are cracking that whip 😂
Love the motivation you guys have been giving me though!
That’s true. But also true that the reason the Ultramarine’s legion was the largest, is because 80% of them had desk jobs.
@@kr0w119 🤣
The void war isnt fought in orbit around the planet. Normally fought at very long distances, thousands of kilometers between ships.
You may already know this, but 7 and 8 need to be watched together and not split. So make sure not to do just 6&7 next
Yes 6, 7, & 8 next! Also, you are not allowed to pause 7 at any time!
Read and heard! good thing too, was about to get on that ;)
The different factions within the empirium are reluctant to work together, the space marines, the imperial guard, the mechanicus, the inquisition, etc... are independent of each other, so discussions and infighting is expected, in the most extreme cases, they have declared war on each other.
Disagreements can be very common, it depends on the situation, but sometimes they can be something as simple as a chapter of space marines helping the imperial guard but doing their own thing instead of following a shared strategy, or more complex issues, such as cultural or religious matters, the imperial creed, like the worlds of the imperium, is interpreted in a million ways.
u are very dedicated and take this journey serious... Welcome, To The Real World :)
I see what you did there 😉
I appreciate that!
Morning!
Good morning to you as well!
Hope you enjoy the video! :)
Hey bud. Not aggro, just being real, I subscribe when the reactor stops asking for chat help on shit that's just superficially easy homework .
