How to Add Semi-Opaque Glazes to Your Acrylic Painting

I'm working on the Lion and the Soldier painting again, and I noticed while working on it, that the background looked kind of rough.
Have you ever had that happen in your painting?
If you're using the glazing technique and things look kind of choppy, grainy, not smoothly blended...a semi-opaque smoothing layer can help.
What is a semi-opaque smoothing layer? It's where you match the predominant color and value of certain area (usually the mid-tone) and dilute the paint to about 50% opacity and apply it over large portions of the area using a flat brush.
In the mixture, you usually add some titanium white, and so that makes it somewhat opaque. Because of the opacity, it tends to smooth out the grainy-ness, blotchiness, and over-texturization of the canvas. It also gives the painting a richness, and substantive feel...almost like an oil.
But keep in mind, it's just part of the process. After applying the layer, you can still refine it, and add detail on top.
