- The Virginia Supreme Court reinstated a lawsuit from Peter Vlaming, a teacher who was fired for declining to use pronouns inconsistent with a student’s sex. Learn more: adflegal.org/p...
After the superintendent at Peter’s school demanded he refer to a female student using male pronouns, he explained that doing so would violate his beliefs. He accommodated the student by using the student’s preferred new name, but the school district demanded he stop avoiding the use of pronouns, and it ultimately fired him.
In its ruling, the Virginia Supreme Court recognized that the Virginia Constitution “seeks to protect diversity of thought, diversity of speech, diversity of religion, and diversity of opinion.” It continued, “Absent a truly compelling reason for doing so, no government committed to these principles can lawfully coerce its citizens into pledging verbal allegiance to ideological views that violate their sincerely held religious beliefs.”

You seem really hateful of the LGBTQ [more specifically transgender] community. Let me clear up a huge misconception.
Being transgender isn't a mental illness [and it has been consistently regarded by an ocean of psychologists and medical professionals alike as not being a mental illness]. It's a change in identity, which literally happens naturally overtime [if you've taken any form of Developmental Psychology class, you'd understand this] throughout your life. You only say it is because you want something to attack them for, because it makes you uncomfortable.
I'm not going to accommodate for your discomfort at the cost of an entire community's right to freely express themselves. Your whole argument mixed with your style of arguing only makes you come off as a pretentious egotistical asshole with no regard for the people around them rather than a rational individual who simply wants to voice their concerns. Feel free to reply, but I expect you to be prepared to hold a debate if you choose to do so.

a teacher who cannot do that is an incompetent teacher, because that teacher has demonstrated an inability to maintain harmony during lectures.

I think reasonable religious accommodation is the law. The teacher did use the student's new name, which would cover all conversation situations.

The teacher himself had already formally agreed from the moment he became a teacher to make sure that all students feel safe and welcome - that IS one of the policies at schools - and it is his own fault if he gets fired for deliberately making a student feel harassed and uncomfortable.
Also, there are LOTS of things in everyday life that everyone is forbidden from saying and doing, so compelled speech already exists in society;
there are things that you have no right to say to other people.

A teachers job is to teach children, not to salve their little feelings or stroke their little egos. Either way though, the argument is valid. government compelled speech is almost ALWAYS unconstitutional.

A job as a teacher involves much more than just teaching:
it also involves a responsibility to make sure that all students feel accepted and welcome.
Heck, I was once asked several kind and caring questions by a _security guard_ at my university when he thought that I looked troubled one time when I was stressed out over some of my courses, and he reacted that way specifically because he cared about my well-being;
he even told me that I could talk to any of his colleagues at any time if there was something on my mind in the future, because security guards at universities generally care a lot about the students.
The same thing is also true about teachers, at least the teachers who actually take their job seriously.
This whole idea that teachers should question transgender students' gender identity is exactly the same kind of behaviour as questioning homosexual students' attraction to the same sex;
it is none of the teachers' business, and they are supposed to prioritise the general well-being of the students.
@@Peter_1986 My ability to be kind doesn’t supersede my ability to tell someone the truth. Telling someone they are wrong in their thinking and actions is what every parent does. Teachers also have this responsibility. No one has ever changed sex or gender in History. They only say it because they’re confused.

I would have objected not just because of religious beliefs, but beliefs in SCIENCE and ENGLISH, which say together that the pronouns refer to a person based on actual gender.

Teachers are not supposed to question the students' legal life choices.

I can assure you that almost all transgender individuals have tried to learn to feel comfortable with the way they were born, but then been unable to do that.
This is exactly the same kind of scenario as when homosexual people were told to "learn to become straight", and that is of course not how it works.
Imagine if a teacher were trying to press a homosexual student to "become straight";
it might be easier for you to see the absurdity in that situation, since homosexuality is currently much more accepted than transgenderism.

Anyone having thoughts of being different can be helped by having therapy or simply talking it over with someone who will listen. Being same sex attracted isn’t the same as thinking you’re born in the wrong body, and I can assure you that puberty is the natural life process which we all experience, and should not be stopped except in very rare circumstances. Going through puberty and coming out the other side as a young adult is also the remedy to much confusion, and most “trans” people will simply realize they are homosexual, which is fine. Those that are still confused can wait until they are Adults to make such life and body altering decisions that might lead to not ever having children, orgasms, and any number of damaging consequences. I follow several trans people on RUclips and X who have transitioned as adults and they strongly believe that children should wait. Isn’t the first code of conduct of all Drs to “do no harm?” Please take note of Chloe Cole and other de-transitioners who are now suing the people responsible for their “gender affirming” practices. This is the worst medical scandal in our entire history. Telling children their problems will be resolved by destroying their bodies because of all the $$ these fools can make because this also makes them life long patients will not end well. Look up Genspect also.

But IF one decided personally to change, the best way is with the Lord God's help PHILIPPIANS 4:13 "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me." Example, I had an incurable illness, a man laid his hands on me in the name of Lord Jesus and I was fully healed.
If you get one of these teachers, simply refuse to answer and acknowledge them unless they use the correct pronouns. Freedom of speech works both ways. If the school sides against, then its your turn to sue them. Force the schools into an unwinnable position.
The correct pronouns are he for males and she for females. Science bro.

EDIT: When sane teachers' bosses start accusing them of 'grooming', or whatever word the right just learned and wants to misuse, they quit. That's what this guy should have done. The classroom is not the place to take a political stand. You call a student whatever the student's parents tell you to call them, or you quit.

Most parents don't even know this is happening with their students because schools hide it. The politics is the districts fault.
As a teacher in a public school you are the government. You don’t have a religion when acting for the government. That is the point of the second amendment.

Completely incorrect - the government cannot suppress the practice of your religion AT ANY TIME, including when you are working for the government. THAT is what the First Amendment guarantees.

If that were the case, you would be establishing a literal state religion that exercises laws based fluidity of gender never knowing day to day what someone wants to be called.. The second amendment has nothing to do with religion unless you are fighting the very tyranny you are proposing. The clerk must exercise the LAW not a feel good policy the school is forcing on the teacher that violates his rights to free speech. As a teacher, you are there to support ALL students. If you are bothered by transgender students then you are definitely in the wrong profession.

Yeah, my father and his current girlfriend have worked as teachers for several decades (my father is a math teacher, and his girlfriend is a home economics teacher), and both of them think that it is ridiculous of a teacher to start an argument with a transgender student in this way.
And they aren't even part of the LGBTQ community in any way - they are a very typical straight couple - they are simply cooperative and compassionate enough to prioritise the well-being of their students above whatever personal beliefs that they might have about gender-affirming surgeries.
