    I've played it a few times, even though I don't own an army. It's quite fun, and this video does a great job of providing a good overview of how it all works.

    Great explanation on how the game works. You have got a new subscriber. Would you make a video on the difference between Hail Caesar I, and Hail Caesar II?

      There were not a huge amount of changes to be honest... the book was mostly about tidying up and re-ordering... to make it easier to find stuff...the main change I recall was about charges through narrow defiles like bridges or through breached castle walls.

    Really good introduction, I would add that perhaps something to emphasise is that the game doesn't require hordes of figures as you can actually set the size of standard units, it is also interesting that there is a section on how to run smaller games now.

    I think it's definitely very helpful. From just the basics, but clearly illustrated, I think I can get the feel for how all the other rules will work. I miss wargaming so much ':D

      Just a quick note the new starter set is basic on Caesars gallic wars and at that time period the Legionaries were mostly wearing chainmail, rather than the Lorica Segmentata... but we do have Imperial Roman starter sets in stock: www.kapitihobbies.com/products/imperial-roman-starter-army-boxed-set?_pos=1&_sid=fb3fb1b68&_ss=r

    My friend and I are looking to get into HC finally. He is deadset on Rome (understandably so. Wome is indeed amazing with their model range!)
    I am torn on getting into Rome, (He plans on painting his colors on another house after Rome split, in blue. I planned on the classic Red of the Julia,) or getting into Sparta. Sparta is a very different playing style, and the hoplites and pikes really draw me in.
    Any suggestions?

      The best advice I can give is firstly, pick a period were you will have any appropriate time period themed foe for your force... and pic one you will enjoy painting,... there's a fair bit of work to be done so it will be easier to continue with it if you are keen on the army!
      Rome is quite a versatile force and its army structure changed over time so again, pick a variety that interests you the most and you have themed opponents for... it will increase your immersion in the experience!

    Nice overview Scott. I've been looking for a successor for Warhammer Ancient Battles but looking at Hail Caesar I thought it would require a lot more units than a standard WAB army. What do you think?

      Hi Nathan thanks for the feedback... I think as a minimum starting point for a standard army you are probably looking at 2 divisions of 4 units... so 8 units... if you go a standard unit as 8 models wide and 2 ranks deep thats 16 models per unit... x 8 units =128 models, add a couple of models for commanders and youre looking at 130 models to start a basic 'army.' ... but of course while you learn the system you can start smaller with just one division of 4 units , so half the above, so 65 models.... and as a caveat... since you dont remove models from units , and the unit is therefore basically its foot print... you can use 'fill' too... tree stumps, wounded models etc etc however you want to make your units look. You could think of them as a small vignette. Hope that helps? :)

    one Question: If the General orders a Command successfully, the other Commanders can't issue orders any more, right?
    But if the General fails to give an order, do the other Commanders still have the ability to give commands?

      Once you elect to use the general, you cannot go back to your subordinate commanders afterwards. If the general fails a command then that the end of your command phase. (Though I believe he has one re-roll to use)

    Planning to get into wargaming starting with Hail Caesar. Can armies of different eras be mixed? (For example ancient greeks vs vikings)

      It can be done, but I feel would spoil the immersion if the opponents are not historically accurate.

    Hi can anyone give me a simplified idea of how the units work? I'm extremely new to war gaming and have two friends who are beginning to build Greek and Roman armies respectively and have been encouraged to join them. But I don't really get how it all works. So my basic understanding is 4 units equals a division and that 3 bases equals a unit but thats not as helpful as it sounds when what you are buying is large amounts of minis.
    So I'm thinking of being Gaul, there is a starter set that is allegedly a Division which over 100 rank and file, 1 cavalry set of 12 anv a command set of minis, then Victrix do fairly affordable kits of 48 either heavy or light infantry. So what do I actually have if I buy the starter set and say 2 Victrix sets of 48 each, is that 2 divisions?

      Hi, You are on the right track, 4 (or more) Units (excluding skirmishers typically) = 1 Division, and most Armies will start with 2 Division's. (You can play with just one division while you learn the rules, but games can be decided very quickly - which could be good while learning).
      Units can very a lot in size depending on their type ... If youre playing Gauls these are going to feature predominantly large warbands of infantry which our playing group depicts as a unit of 32 models (in 4 ranks of 8 models). You can save on model count, if you keep unit footprint the same, but add mini terrain features instead of minis on some of the bases e.g. large rocks, tree stumps etc...
      The Gauls can also have medium cavalry which are normally depicted 12 models (in 2 ranks of 6.)
      and you can add some skirmishers... these will be individually based models deployed in a loose mob formation, typical 8-12 models per unit.
      You can also field small light Cavalry Units (typical 6 models ) , and Gallic light chariots (usually in a unit of 3 models).

      @@kapitihobbies9360 yep this was helpful thanks a lot. Presumably the models are largely representative of much larger forces so its mostly aesthetics? I've seen war dog miniatures, are they a thing in Hail Caesar? What about warlord, do they simply wander the battlefield as a single entity? I kind of want to get an Asterix mini to field as a joke, but frankly I think the gauls are going to need him, I've almost certainly drawn the short straw faction wise.

      @@bendavison8981 Hi Ben glad that was a help. There are various ways on think what a unit represents on thetable top... typically you might want to a assume a figure ratio, eg one model on table top is 20 men... a unit of 24 Roman legionaries would therefore represent a cohort of 480 men. But this kind of thing is often open to your own interpretation. yes there are war dogs available as models... I dont think there are specific rules for them in the game (?) but they could be included in a units footprint, or as part of a commanders base. Commanders are typically based on small round bases and are your chance to model a small vignette as you wish. They represent a commanders relative position on the table with regards issuing orders to his troops. But can be joined to a unit in combat phase to add extra attacks. Asterix would indeed be a fun addition. Everything is points relative and if you can get a greater number of units than your opponents and can get into position to wrap a flank, then you have a good chance of collapsing a large multiple combat.

    This is no good. Are there no rules that try to model ancient warfare better than this?
