I carried that knife for a long time when I was a LEO.. I also carried a backup gun.. The main thing I liked about it was that if I did need it when all else failed it deploys very fast from the pocket if you know how to draw it using the tab, the lock is one of the best on the market and your hand is locked in and protected and secure if you have to use it for self-defense. Now that I'm retired I carry knives that take up less real estate in my pocket but I still love the knife and carry it from time to time.
That's literally the main reason I'm considering this knife.
1 - My policy only allows lockback knives for the patrol division
2 - the way the handle is designed means it's less likely to slip out of my hand
3 - I currently keep a spyderco police 4 in my pocket but it's very lightweight and thin (which us very utilitarian) but in a defensive situation if I'm literally down to my last bit of energy and my gun is no longer an option, I feel like I lightweight knife would be less effective
4 - I keep my knife on my weak side because we are trained to lay on our guns to protect them if shtf....
5 - the wave feature is extremely advantageous in this field. We almost never have both hands available.
6 - I keep a small crkt in my vest for utility (ie. cutting print tape, cutting random odds and ends) so a knife like this would NEVER come out of my pocket. For 2 reasons, 1 I need to know it's always in the same place, and so it stays sharp for when it's needed in that "oh crap" scenario.
@@michaelmoses4019 Pretty much the same reasoning I went through when in Patrol. It's a great knife for exactly the SHTF situations.
@@michaelmoses4019 Great analysis. Stay safe.
I happen to love this knife. Cold steel knocked it out the park with this one. We all have options and I hope people think for themselves when it comes to RUclips. Not only is it cool but everything you put down about the knife is your limitations with the knife. Everyone I know with a Cold Steel Spartan gives it high praise’s.
I love that Lynn Thompson carries like 5 or six of his largest knives and at least 3 guns 😂 Gotta respect a guy who stands behind his product
It might be ridiculous and impractical for you Kansas boys, but here in the mean corn fields of Indiana a knife like this is a real God send. Just last week I had to fight off a gaggle of miscreants while out shoveling my fields. Luckily I had my normal EDC, the Espada XL, on me, so I was prepared. The spartan could make a nice deep carry back up though. Looks like it would slide right into the front of some overalls quite nicely.
I had that knife in my pocket for a long time in welding school. Awesome knife, and a jaw dropper when you open boxes in class! 10 out a 10 would recommend
Look , a big knife can do everything a small knife can but a small knife cannot do everything a big knife can.
"For people that enjoy living that fantasy..... On their couch" why u gotta call me out on a Friday man I was having a great day 😂
😆
@@metal_complex I sent you an Instagram DM regarding a knife you might want, just lmk ✌🏼
@@metal_complex bro do you know how dangerous some parts of America are???
@@donjuanmckenzie4897 the Espada isn't the answer to whatever you want to tell me.
He can’t comprehend people living in dangerous areas so he attacks people for wanting some sort of way for defending themselves.
I've been using this knife for over 3 years, it's great for skinning deboning and even cutting through bone love the knife.
This was one of my first knives that I thought of as expensive lol. I have the older Aus 8 version purchased back in 2013. Use to carry it quite often and while I've moved on to other knives for most EDC, this thing is an absolute BEAST when it comes to yard work. The recurve and super secure grip. It's just great for trimming up some branches. So when we get to spring, yeah I'll have the Cold Steel Spartan in my pocket as I'm working on my yard. No other folding knife can accomplish what it can in the yard.
The Spartan or the vaquero are work horses when it comes to hard work
Plenty of other folding knives can accomplish what the spartan can in the yard. You just won't look as cool doing it!
@Simon Tilbey I'll draw faces on each branch and call them Tim or Greg or grundericson. So they can be people.
Love that knife. Got both the regular and serrated version. I have no problem in carrying or deployment but, that's just me. Believe me I know, this knife is not for everyone... But it "is", for me! Great review!!!
Every time I see Cold Steel marketing and their over the top builds it reminds me of a JG Ballard quote that reads, “The suburbs dream of violence. Asleep in their drowsy villas, sheltered by benevolent shopping malls, they wait patiently for the nightmares that will wake them into a more passionate world.” But it still puts a smile on my face even though I could never see myself carrying it hahaha
The reality is suburbanites of the past new the DANGER wasn't far away. These days, the dangerous people (guess who) have been moved into the suburbs.
@@donjuanmckenzie4897 i am completely unable to guess who but am dying to know. also it’s *knew* not new, but you’re doing great buddy keep it up
I get the criticism about the "need to open moar faster!" and the "how often would you actually need this?" But, I would suggest you think about how often people need seat belts, or steel toes in their boots. It changes the mindset and the question to, "when I need it, do I have it?" I carry a knife as a tool for daily tasks, but in an extreme case I have a knife I can defend my family from a wild animal or even an excessively ill-mannered pet that has escaped containment. That said... I also carry a Bradford Guardian, and it deploys faster than a wave clip or even a ProTech auto.
I've carried this knife for a while and it's big, but not that much of an inconvenience. When it comes to self defense the philosophy I live by is, I'd rather have it and not need it, than need and not have it. But I'm a big knife fan and just had to put my two cents in. lol. Great video love your content. 👊😁
There is something seriously deranged about people who don't take safety concerns seriously. "I want to be safe so I carry a weapon." Was normal in every single period of history.
I owned the Aus 8, gave it to my son in the military. I bought another in Aus 10A. MILITARY/ LEO/ EMS we have pants with a 5th picket, so you don't really notice it as much as a front pocket. The voyager series is thinner and lighter. Same lock but no ^wave". Voyager just flicks open via gravity/enertia. Sparta is a good camping folder.
I love waving knives open. Not for any "tactical" advantage, it just has a cool factor for me and it's a fast and easy way to deploy them. I put a Snaggletooth on my Recon 1 and love it!
I'm a cop and I used to carry a little 2 1/4" blade Kabar TDI fixed blade, tucked inconspicuously out of sight, until our policy was changed to prohibit fixed blade knives of any size or shape, because of the optics of it, I guess. It was a sensible, durable little knife. I'm now considering this in protest as my replacement, because the new policy allows a folding knife with a blade up to 4.5", and I don't think they realized how big a folding knife that actually is, lol. I love it BECAUSE it's ridiculous. 😂
It will be fun for you to play with when your sitting in a hallway for 2 hours like the rest of those uvalde cops
I carry a large coldsteel folder, but I also carry an Ontario rat 1. I use the rat 1 for utility tasks.
Cold Steel's serrated Voyager Vaquero is one of the favorite knives of all time
I found limited use when attempting to make this knife useful in edc roles. For example, cutting cardboard is a 3/10 for it tends to slip out of a cut due to the recurved section. It’s also quite bad at whittling wood for the same reason. However, peeling an apple was good because the recurve part hugs the spherical nature of the apple, and pull cuts like cutting Paracord
Last CS I bought was the 4Max scout. I like it but I am interested in the spartan. I carry a CS range boss at work.
And if this version is too sparse, they're releasing a special Lynn Thompson version in S35vn and also with serrations!😱
I think for most, the pocket-catch flipper (and this entire knife in general) is just a party trick. I particularly like this knife because the blade shape/size seems that it would lend itself to making kindling and other small-medium chopping tasks.
I carry my sheepdog xl on the reg and I don't hate it
Despite of it's weight and thickness the Spartan is remarkably easy to carry in a pocket
"Tactical rectangle unicorn 🦄 horn." Phrase of the day. I love it 🤣🤣🤣
I picked this up for $37 when CS was blowing out old stock on Amazon. It's been sitting in a drawer ever since but I plan on taking it camping to use as a folding machete.
i own so many cold steels i forgot what small was - i got a sog twitch II and it has a three inch blade - normal from what people say but it feels like a mini knife in my hand
I only need to get to that scenario that I need to open it fast once, that’s more than enough
I must suggest that at least once in your life, every knife/EDC community member should use a big Cold Steel folder to clear away brush & branches. Having a Spartan (or one of their tacticool fixed blades) in hand turns a chore into some fun.
Edit - "Knives are tools" is how I look at the almost comically large Cold Steel folders - they're folding machetes. The Spartan, Raja, and the XL versions of their Recon lineup have been great gardening and yardwork tools over the years.
On a related note - this is an excellent example of the right way to do a thumb plate/disk.
Yes, the large cold steel folders are radically undersold for their utility value
I have one of those things. I don't carry it very often because it's so bulky and heavy. The ridiculousness is one of the reasons I bought it.
What’s the angle at which the knife drops? Can you measure it?
Is that a hollow thing or flat grind?
And which grind is better: hollow or flat?
How many times will you need to quick deploy? Only once.
We have knife show and tell at work. This is the kind of thing that's just fun to see on occasion.
The only reason I have one of these Spartan is because my younger brother left it to me when he passed away 2 years ago from a brain tumor. It's a beast, but even my slimmer and smaller Cold Steel Code 4 (S35VN) is slow to open and close, due to the friction of the triad lock. I have no idea for what my brother used this knife, not for his job as a chef, but maybe for camping and splitting wood?
I got one for 5 bucks in box at a thrift store, love it
To me rogue dogs is another good reason to carry any sort of pocket knife. Bigger the better.
Flashlight or pepperspray can also be effective and a lot less legal issues. Strong strobe wards off aggressive dogs.
I wear 5.11 and I carry this in a magazine pocket on the side and it works great I don't feel it.
Yuuup. If i ever have to defend myself with a knife i hope i have my Cold Steel spartan or atleast my talwar at the time.
I can flick both open with my thumb and maybe a little wrist action just fine. You gotta have strong hands and practice a bit though.
And both make decent camp knives, maybe even survival knives. They are definitely fighters at heart however.
They really are good knives. A little silly but they do serve a purpose.
It's like a magic trick when you deploy it from the pocket. People are awed
What size Allen key would you use to tighten up the screws on the clip ?
Have you heard the story Lynn Thompson told of someone he knew who used this knife against an attacker? One slash and the fight was over. The attacker had to have numerous surgeries afterwards. Do you think a Swiss Army knife would have produced the same effect?
Sometimes it is not to wonder why but rather why not
5:38 You have to then have to ask yourself how many times will you find yourself in a situation where you’d need your blade steel to be made from M-390?
-> it’s just better to have it and not need it
than need it and not have it.
Just won one from jimislash. This thing huge an solid.
I like this knife for one reason only. I walk every night for cardio and although this is a decent neighborhood I don’t trust being completely defenseless. I have a couple 380 micro pistols but they weigh my jogging shorts down and I constantly find myself tightening my shorts or sweat pants to accommodate my firearm.. I don’t have interest in some super fancy holster and I’m
Very simple when it comes down to it. I can clip this knife to the waistband of my shorts and it doesn’t bother me. If I was ever in a place to use this knife I could see where it would end a fight almost instantly. The purchase I get on this knife is unbelievable. No one is taking this knife from me and no matter how sweaty my hands are, this knife isn’t going anywhere. Other knifes I have would be effective for sure but you could almost take a hand totally off with this blade. The fight would be over before it even began.. otherwise it’s cumbersome and serves one purpose
you know where to get a replacement back spacer for one?
I have this knife and love it!!
An honest review, refreshing - thank you 👍
MC the day has came, prepare yourself.. I take issue with your review on the spartan.
I think you came down way to hard on the Emerson wave, in most instances it’s just a faster way to open a knife with one hand, and that’s a really knice option to have when you’re dealing with a back lock that is going to be slow to wheel open normally. The wave or whatever also functions as the studs and doesn’t reach to far over into to cutting path, so I’d say it’s practical enough to justify having it.
The mega awesome tri-ad lock maybe overkill, but I myself rather have the lock be the absolute last thing to break, and it’s almost necessary to have because we both know the stupid levels of abuse these will be put through. Now with the grip, I’m into swords and that looks like the handle to a Greek kopis, and that’s something that will stay in your hand for sure, no risk of slipping out. It’s clear this is a purpose made knife designed to do a lot of hacking and chopping, as an edc it’s probably not the best choice but for camping and yard work it might be the best choice from cold steel, also the fact it looks like a kopis and is called the “Spartan” is.. rather cool. I don’t appreciate your take on this one, I’d even go so far to say you did it dirty.
And on a side note running away from a threat isn’t always possible, a knife can be better than nothing at all, but a gun is preferable.
This is a knife you buy because it's fun
Would make an awesome ranch knife
Great.. my 5'6 skinny Asian ass now has another mall ninja knife I want now 😂
Mega Cool Cold Steel Knife
It surprisingly isn't annoying to carry
MC speaking the truth about tacticool knives. Love it! The “tactical rectangle” made my day.
He's totally delusional lol. He literally as 0 understanding of how much violence there is in American life.
I’ve never liked the shape of this knife but I’m sure it’s a workhorse. Big Cold Steel fan though, carried a 4 Max on and off for the last ~4 years.
Ngl I cracked up the first time you said "tactical rectangle"! I love cold steels more "modest" knives like the Recon 1 but don't see myself ever buying something like this. I prefer to have something I'm likely to use to the fullest though I struggle to do even that with most of my knives.
I bought the Spartan in 2011 - my first knife purchase off Amazon. It’s impractical and dumb but it’s FUN! It’s funny to me how MC can light up like a little boy over a Midgard - by appreciating it for what it is - but has a stick up his hoohoo on this. Why are are evaluating this like a 7O year old mall security guard? Me thinks there be some knife guy snobbery here. 😂
I think you should revisit the Spartan, MC, and review it through a fun lens . I’ll send mine in for ya!
Don’t understand why looking at the knife you would assume it would be tip down carry when it has the rectangle that is only able to be used for wave deployment in a tip configuration..
Sometimes the unsung laws of the "Tactical advantage" confuse us normal feeble folk
It's going for 50 right now as of today. On december second on amazon, twenty twenty three, about this like I bought about eight years ago or something like that
Plus you know you would have to get two of them just so you could put one in each pocket, that way when you’re walking like you just been kicked in the plumbs your even looking, not like if you only had one and suddenly had that look out here comes limping Larry! They can be used for ballast on boats just in case anyone one was interested.have a beautiful day M _C stay safe and healthy brother 😘👍
I agree with you. I think I would rather carry a SR1 and use it as a tool 1st, and then self defense, if it happens. I have a stupid 3 inch law in my area that keeps me from carrying what I want to carry. Typically I carry a utility knife that has a screwdriver on it or a multi tool, since I do construction work. This knife looks cool and that's why I wanted to see a video on it, but it would end up being a shelf queen, but it's not, in my opinion worth that. If I lived out in the country, I would probably definitely get this knife though.
Sounds like you should just have a box cutter
Hey MC, had an interesting idea for a knife guy ep or just a long form vid, would love to hear your opinion on most knife companies and maybe your favourite knife from each
Wow my lock is extremely hard to deploy definitely not like this one, almost need two hands to unlock mine sometimes
Looks like a great knive for the sofa commandos 😂
I’m sure a lot of young guys like to pocket deploy because they think it looks cool. I’m also sure it shreds pocket hems.
I learned this the hard way, pants are too damn expensive to shred them up unnecessarily
Anyone know a fix for the stiff Pocket Clip and Stiff triad lock?
I carried this knife around a lot when I was an 18 yr old mall ninja. Kind of like what you said, I think knives like this are for dudes living in a tacti-cool fantasy land. Getting back into knives 10 years later and this Spartan represents pretty much everything I avoid in knives now.
For what it's worth, the lock never failed. But I snapped the tip off the Spartan trying to pry open my old apartment window that was stuck shut with paint. I guess the marketing led me to believe the knife was indestructible, and after all it could stab through car doors, right?? Turns out it wasn't all that tough.
I still have my other Cold Steel mall ninja weapons - Ti Lite 4" and an OSS fighting dagger 8.25". Neither of those ever really see the light of day, definitely don't carry them.
I really hope Cold Steel starts to make more user oriented blades, like the old Japanese made Voyager series (though I think most of their production is moved to Taiwan & China now). Sure it's fun to see some over the top ridiculous stuff come out every once in a while, I don't think that's what most people end up using daily. Most will probably carry things like their Code 4, SR 1/Recon 1, American lawman, AD-15 etc and not something that will require a gym bag or backpack. And now that both Cold Steel & SOG is owned by the same company we might end up seeing some even more over the top stuff, and hopefully some good stuff also fingers crossed.
my friend once used his spartan to fight off raccoons that were attacking his cat lmao
Did it work?
@@metal_complex lol yeah i think so
@@nothingsreal6810 there's a 300 joke in there somewhere.
Raccoon: "this is madness!"
Your friend: "madness?! *deploys knife* THIS. IS. COLD STEEL. SPARTAN!"
I have one of the Cold Steel Lynn Thompson Signature Spartans. I you would like to check it out I could send it to you, just let me know.
The handle is trying to look like the old Greek swords called Falcatas. Hence the name Spartan
Kopis
It's easier to legally carry a knife like this than to legally carry a firearm in many places, especially for 18-21 year olds. And how often are firearms used? Also, using the wave on a regular basis builds muscle memory. One other thought - it's much more acceptable to open packages with this than with a 9mm 😜
Someone at my work was freaked out by an Off Beat.
I get what you're saying, but I disagree. It's also about fun. My 10yo daughter has fun carrying a Fossil and a call Ritual.
Completely disagree, that knife works very well on Cardboard, and if your grilling outside you can cut onions and other useful tasks. It carries well in pocket.
Na. Sorry. Glad u like it though
Never been more annoyed by a knife review as this one . Yeah we get it there’s smaller knives that carry easier but just review the quality and build . Spent two seconds on that and ten mins downing its size
@@jmcknight1113 I agree. The Spartan feels better in your pocket than the AK-47 which I also own. I love both knives. The AK-is very flat and less ergonomic, the Spartan although bigger feels surprisingly better in my right pocket.
This is the best cardboard cutter, he hasn't used it daily
I get in 3 knife fights a day. When I am at home I have to block my wife's Katana if she's displeased with me.
Nick Shabazz needs this in his life.
Despite your opinion. I want one
I have a few Cold Steel knives, but I dropped them when Lynn Thompson sold out.I do really like my Leather neck and my Recon one, so I will keep them, but I won’t buy any more Cold Steel merch.
Yeah i agree with you that it is inconvenient and ridiculous, but I love big ridiculous knives like this, and I love it when people ask to use a knife and I whip this thing out.
I agree with everything you're saying. But this knife was also never designed to be a utility knife and shouldn't be in the same category as you kershaw leek that's light and comfy. Look at the commercials they put out for majority of their blades. These guys produce fighting knives. Big knives aren't comfortable and neither are knife fights. People have asked me numerous times "what's the best knife to carry for self defense?" And I ALWAYS tell them it doesn't exist unless you're trained to do so, knives are a dirty last ditch way to defend yourself. For self defense you wanna put distance between you and your attacker. Granted he makes these "XL" knives that are 10-14 inches long and in that scenario it gives you the upper hand. He knows what he's talking about. But your average Joe would be better off using a gun or pepper spray. A knife for 9 out of 10 people is a tool. And that's it. Fighting with it should rarely if ever come to mind.
Small knives can hurt people. Large knives protect people. That Spartan will likely not need to be used, only deployed in an about-to-become desperate situation, and no one gets hurt if you just back away carefully and swiftly. De-escalate.
I carry a talwar everyday as part of my EDC
It's designed for jackassery. If you're going to go jackass, you might as well to go full jackass. XL Espada or Ti-Lite 6" for full jackassery impact would be the way to go.
Is that a cold steel spartan in your pants or are you just happy to see me. Hahaha 🤣
I'm the douche that carries a Cold Steel Spartan lol.
Pepper spray would be a million times more useful and practical for self defense. And assuming you live in a free state and are a sane sober moral prudent person you can get your conceal carry license and actually have a effective self defense tool.
This knife is certainly awesome, but just as a silly novelty. As are most of cold steel knives. That said the cold steel recon one is one of my favorite knives of all time.
Right on! I do enjoy the Recon One (drop point), but so many others are ridiculous. One thing I can never figure out is how the Recon disappears in the pocket. I never know it’s there until I need it. How can such a large knife be so unobtrusive?
@@jonathancupp3686 I think it's due to how the clip is oriented so sitting flush in the pocket the clip oriends the knife back and away from the main area allowing it to sit basically as far right as possible and curving away from your main pocket space so as not to get in the way of you fishing out your keys and such. I had a recon 1 Bowie for the longest time and it finally was lost/stolen on a coming trip :(
Disagree. Wind ruins that math
Also check out the demo of the Counter Tac 2 by cold steel 😀
I just picked one up for 52 bucks!!!
Yeah, the best you can do if you and your partner are attacked is to run and leave her behind defenseless...
What a brave man 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
You see, it would be very uncoothe to ever consider your safety something you, yourself, can do about
hahahaha on one hand, I totally agree with everything you said.... on the other, I have one of these and I love it hahahaha
Lol the way you closed it slow is the same kind of example of when people make it look like hinderers won't cut paper... Purposely clumsy 😂
just a comment to make a comment, you welcome. great job lately, btw.
I use wave type deployment all the time... usually because I have package or whatever in my other hand. Mostly because it's super easy. Secondly cause it's cool. Thirdly because non knife people get scared. 🤣🤣🤣
Bro must have never had to defend himself before
Tip up configuration..
Guys doesn’t realize it’s a knife that’s just different and has its own purpose and just keeps beating a dead horse about how not cool it is. Yeah it’s not a small pocket knife we get it for gods sakes
People are so moronic about big knives. Like, they really think the only use for a big knife is to fight somebody. I carry big knives all the time. They are FAR more useful than small knives.
I usually enjoy your reviews but there was a lot of negativity in this one.
I like my Spartan. They’re not for everyone though.
