In this video Canadian Guitarist/producer Dean Wolfe reacts to Gacharic Spin, Gold Dash
A LITTLE ABOUT ME: I'm Dean Wolfe, a mostly self-taught Canadian guitarist/composer/multi-instrumentalist/singer/producer/performer. I started out as a full time musician, on the road at age 17 for two years, then went part-time ever since, while holding day careers including chef and spiritual health care while raising a family.
As a producer I've made hundreds of my own songs for media and award winning documentaries etc. I've been in several bands including a prog/jazz fusion act nFuze, performing in International Jazz festivals and jazz clubs. I mostly abandoned the prog genre in the 90s but have returned to it now with vigour 30 years later. So much prog! My own prog band was rejected by record labels as "too progressive' in the late 80s, so i detoured into grunge, pop and alternative instead (then folk / acoustic fingerstyle guitar and ambient electronic as well).

So many fun rhythmic details in this track. That main synth riff that opens the track is in 7/4 but when that programmed drum pattern comes in it's playing a regular back beat against it so the snare/drum pattern gets turned around in the second bar. Main riff proceeds in 7/4 but there's an extra beat added onto the last bar (you'd probably notate it as 2 bars of 4/4).
Verse riff is in 4/4 - 3/4 - 4/4 - 4/4 (could write it as 7/4 - 4/4 - 4/4 but feels more natural to treat it as a 4 bar phrase with a beat snipped off the end of the second bar). First half of pre-chorus is in 3/4, second half of pre-chorus and the chorus is in 4/4.
The main riff in 7/4 comes back after the chorus but this time it doesn't add the extra beat coming out of it into the verse. The verse is in 4/4 - 3/4 - 4/4/ - 4/4 again, although in the first half it's playing this cool pattern where nothing ever lands on the 1 of any bar, adding an extra "floating" feeling to the already ambiguous shifting time-sig pattern. It solidifies back into the first verse groove in the second half of the the second verse though. Same 3/4 for first half then 4/4 for second half pre-chorus and 4/4 chorus.
The rap interlude is in 4/4, but there's a nice bit where the drums hang the first 2 beats of the bar halfway through before coming back in, then coming out of the rap section into the guitar solo there's an extra bar of 2/4, to me it almost feels like they've played a cheeky trick by treating the drums hanging out for 2 beats then coming back in halfway through a bar like the drums have now been offset and the bar of 2/4 is catching things up.
    Also worth noting the 3 / 3 / 3 / 3 / 2 / 2 8th note pattern played in the drums against the end of the solo that then confusing leads straight into an extra bar with a 2 / 3 / 3 pattern - so in total it's like 3 / 3 / 3 / 3 / 2 / 2 / 2 / 3 / 3 in terms of the 8th rhythm played against those last 3 bars of the 9 bar solo.
4/4 double length exit chorus as expected, then back into 2 statements of the main riff in 7/4.
It's all very well having all this rhythmic ingenuinty, but I love that they make it all completely groovy and danceable, someone could jam along to this without even realising there's all this odd time-sig stuff going on because they make it feel so natural - odd time sigs done right IMO!

Interesting analysis of the percussion in this track. I’m guessing you are a drummer yourself. The GS track I wish I, is a 7 1/2 minute journey into the creative world of this band. Perhaps you could carry out a similar analysis of that track. It would be interesting to hear what you make it.

    • @nanakakitano9724
      @nanakakitano9724 Год назад

@@DJAYPAZ I'm glad all this was interesting! I am a drummer although secondary to other instruments I play, I've not tried playing this on drums myself yet but I am a big proponent of "active listening" to music and try to mentally transcribe everything I hear to the best of my abilities.
Regarding "I Wish I" - it sounds like it's approx 130bpm, and it's 99% in just standard 4/4, and mostly using standard 2 or 4 bar phrases. There are a few bits of odd time-signature usage however, interestingly in both cases when everyone has dropped out except for the vocals, meaning a great deal of concentration is required to make sure everyone hits them just right as you can't just settle into a groove and they're one off occurances.
The first is when everything drops out at the end of the quiet intro and Angie just sings that line before it smashes into the heavy riffs/screaming part, that moment of silence from everything except the vocals is 5.5 beats - you could notate it as a single bar of 11/8, or a bar of 4/4 plus a bar of 3/8. Suddenly smashing into a new bar halfway through a beat really helps add to the disorienting effect of that transition and the impact of it.
The second moment of odd time-signature usage is coming out of the end of the last chorus an extra beat is added to the final bar before it goes into the outro riffs, making a bar of 5/4. It uses the same off-beat dotted 8th note pattern it has exited the chorus with before (more on that later) with the final unison stab landing bang on beat 3, then there's 2 beats of rest (excluding Angie's vocals). Compare this to after the 1st chorus where it has the same off-beat dotted 8th note stabs pattern landing on the 3, but then there's a drum fill of 16th note triplets on the snare on beat 4 that leads it back into the main heavy riff.
Times the 2 or 4 bar phrase pattern is broken are:
      * Coming out of the intro, final phrase is 5 bars (with last bar being 11/8)
      * Coming out of the interlude after the layered solos there is a bar added onto the 2nd and final phrase making it 5 bars (and the interlude 9 bars in total)
Regarding the off-beat dotted 8th note pattern I mentioned earlier: this is scattered throughout the track in various places, for example fragments of it are referenced in the main riff on the & of the 1 in bars at the end of phrases, a similar idea is referenced in the first verse riff on the 4 of the first phrase. Coming out of both the first and second pre-chorus's there is a whole bar of dotted 8th note pattern starting on the beat. Coming out of the "electro" interlude (note sure how to describe it, the bit in the video where all the colours change and it's like paint running) there's 2 beats of on the beat dotted 8th notes. You'll also hear little references to the dotted 8th pattern e.g. in the guitar riffs, in the drum fill halfway through the solo, etc.
My favourite use of the dotted 8th note pattern however is the off-beat unison stab version of it they do coming out of all chorus starting on the & of the 1 of the final bar of each chorus with no beat reference around it which creates a surprising rhythmic effect. For the first chorus these stabs at the end land on the & of 1, the 'e' of 2, and bang on the 3.
For the 2nd chorus this pattern is extended for an extra 2 hits, making it & of the 1, 'e' of the 2, 3, 'a' of the 3, and & of the 4.
For the 3rd chorus it's the same as the first chorus, except that extra beat of silence in the instruments is added making it a 5/4 bar.
Other random things I love about this track:
      * Crazy drum patterns, I could write an essay (even more than I have above! XD) on all the unusual drum patterns and fills Hana came up with for this track, one example is the chorus drum pattern, she does this unusual thing where she's hitting on the beats (1, 2, 3, 4) with the snare and sloshed open hi-hat, her right foot is all off-beat 16th's, creates this fantastic high-energy skipping effect, then has 2 whole bars of highly specific drum fill at the end of the 2nd 4 bar phrase before solidifying the groove into a more traditional back-beat that really makes the second half of the chorus feel like it's gone from the breathless franticness of the 1st half to a grand finale.
      * Layered guitar solos (plus over harmony backing vocals) - guitar solos you hear a lot, harmony guitar solos you hear a lot, call and response guitar leads you hear less but still fairly regularly, two guitarists playing entirely different but complimentary things, I really can't think of anywhere else I've ever heard it apart from this track.
TL;DR: "I Wish I" is an absolutely genius track, and the band deserves far more love and appreciation for the awesome things they're doing.

@@nanakakitano9724 Thanks for your comprehensive analysis of “I wish I”. The track is “genius” as you’ve said” The arrangement makes great use of the three vocalists, splitting the lyrics between them creating a more interesting listening experience. The build up of tension in the lyrical progression towards the end of the track culminates with both Hana and Angie singing in duet for the final phrase. The replay value of this track is very high. Of note is that “I wish I” is produced by the band members. This recent change started with “Mindset” and marks the point in time where their music became more adventurous compared to earlier tracks. You might like to listen to a dual drummer live performance GS did with both Hama and Yuri playing drums. I have forgotten the track name sorry.

@@DJAYPAZ Thank you, although my analysis was far from comprehensive, it just touched on a few areas of particular interest!
The vocal arrangement is absolutely incredible on the track, I intend to write up my best effort at a transcription at some point, it would be extremely valuable learning. I did a transcription of Take My Chance by DOLL$BOXX (same musicians but with Fuki on lead vocals) a few years back that also has stunning vocal arrangements that was an excellent learning experience.
I would suggest that Gacharic Spin's music has always been adventurous, although sometimes in different ways. For example, one of their earliest tracks Ben Jan Dan mixes unusual rhythmic patterns, bizarre vocalisations, Mozart quotations, and extensive slap bass, not exactly your common or garden variety rock! But I do love the fresh energy self-producing has infused, and that they seem to have gone with a more natural production vibe on their last few albums over the very heavily produced sounds of Kakuhen and G-Litter (both also fantastic albums, even if the production style isn't quite as much to my taste). Their 13th anniversary stream where they showcased all as-yet unreleased tracks was incredible, they have been coming up with some crazy stuff!
The dual drum performance you're thinking of is probably of TAMASHII. If you have TikTok and enjoy dual drums look them up on there as well, they have a few clips of Hana and Yuri doing dual-drum versions of MindSet, including trading solos over that crazy interlude (Hana absolutely shreds the Portnoy fills (RLRLKK) as demisemiquavers across the beat, such an insanely talented drummer).

My particular like is the bands ability to pull elements of different genres seamlessly into there music. One that comes to mind is Oreo and Nenen doing some jazz scat.

When their previous dancer (Mai) left, they were going for a new dancer and a new vocalist (who quit after a couple rehersals) but in the end they just hired a new dancer (Pink haired Angie, who is now a singer as well), Hana swapped from drums to guitar since she was doing a lot of the vocals anyway and they hired a new drummer (yuri).
Hana is a multi instrumentalist having played bass in a previous band and I have seen her play drums, guitar, some keyboard, a Roland Aerophone (which is an electronic wind instrument), Ocarina and who knows what else she can play. I am actually not sure if she had a lot of experience playing the drums when she formed Gacharic Spin with her schoolfriend Koga (bass).
Hana also played Smells like teens spirit on household items during the pandemic (a ruler, a balloon, a toothbrush, glasses filled with water, ...). It sounded very good actually.
    There are 2 videos:
The performance itself (about a minute and a half): 【続編】楽器を使わずNirvanaの"Smells Like Teen Spirit"を演奏してみた!!
The setup and explanation on how she created it with some talking from other members in the beginning (there are no English subs though): 楽器を使わずNirvanaの"Smells Like Teen Spirit"を演奏してみた!!
But that's what you get when creative and talented musicians are bored during the pandemic I guess.

    Ga…cha…ric spin
    An Americanization
Of gachapon , the Japanese word for the sounds of a machine where you put your money in, crank the handle and any one of several ‘prizes’ drop down into the bin. The gacha part is the cranking part and can be used to refer to any annoying sound,or clattering.
The pon is your item arriving.
Gacharic spin took the gacha part and Americanized it by adding an ic(in this case) ric to the the gacha and creating gacharic spin which is the
Essence if noisiness. This noises refers to their instruments. The take this mishmash of noise and spin it together into beautiful music.
Now we read these Japanese words they are written romanji, ie, abcdefg…
Who ever created the word is trying to write their language so that it can be pronounced by an English speaker. So sound it out on a second grade level. Ch is not a k
It’s a ch as in chicken. We wouldn’t say kicken.
There is one twist on romanji.
It syllables are arranged as they would be in Japanese where nearly all word and syllables start with a consonant and end with a vowel. So gacha would be
Ga then cha not gach a.
Words ending in n don’t need a vowel so spin is fine but our lovely ladies made a hybrid which doesn’t quite work in japan. On those occasions when you hear them introduce themselves they say ‘ga…cha…ric spin.
    Not ga…char…ic spin
But other times they will not say gacharic spin but instead
    Say ga…cha…ree…ca spin.
Japanese audiences much prefer the second because the gacharic part ends in an
Vowel. To them the Americanized version just sounds weird.
The other name they went by was gachapin which is gacharic and spin mashed together. It was popular early on but seems to have dropped off over the years.
Probably because at the time they started there was a green dinosaur puppet cartoon character(think Barney)that was quite popular with five year olds. It s difficult to be a sexy cutting edge all girl rock band and have a tie in to toddlers…especially the first year when armmy was writing the lyrics.
Sexxxxyyyy….you can tell when Hana is writing the music(nearly always) but also
Writing the lyrics. Songs like more power and never say never are practically morality plays. And seem so much tighter because only one person is responsible for their creation…not that Hana can’t weave her musical magic around nearly any subject given to her.
