The 86 came in 2 main versions: The Levin and the Trueno. Takumi drives a Trueno, and in this episode we see a Levin passing Kenji. They are basically the same car though, with the main difference being that the Trueno has Pop-up headlights.
I saw that you got confused at 7:14 , yes, that was an ae86. The toyota sprinter AE85/AE86 had 2 different front end styles, the Trueno with the pop up headlights, and the Levin with fixed headlights. They were also both available as hatchback, like Takumi's and Itsuki's or as a coupe, (you will see one later in the anime). The difference between the 86 and the 85 was the mechanical part (engine, suspension, brakes, wheels, etc) The 86 had the 1.6l 4A-GE (electronic fuel injection) engine with arround 130hp stock and the 85 had the 1.5l 3A-U (carburated) engine with arround 85hp stock, found in older toyotas such as the starlet, sprinters or older corollas. Fun facts: AE86 were sold in Europe only with fixed headlights and the 4A-GE as a Corolla GT and both versions were sold in the US as a corolla, but with different engines. Trueno is spanish for thunder and levin was lightning in old english 🙂
The AE86's engine is also DOHC, while the AE85's is SOHC. The US version - Corolla GT-S - did come with the 4A-GE. Literally the only difference between a US Corolla and a JDM Trueno is which side the driver sits on (and of course, nameplates). They both used the AE86 chassis, and thus both used the 4A-GE engine.
From here out theyre gonna talk a lot more about "Gunma" "Saitama" and stuff, which are prefectures in Japan, basically you can think of them like states here in the US. Just mentioning cause you said "city of gunma" at 8:24 so i wanted to give some scale to it :)
hey man i've been watching your series as I'm rewatching initial d with my friend, i'd love to tell you about some of the race details and why things work throughout the series. as an example, why sudo sucks at turning right is because in japan they drive with the steering on the right and the car in the left lane. now, for fast cornering you follow an "out-in-out" principle where you only cut in at the middle of the corner: for right turns in japan that means going staying in your own lane before the corner, *into oncoming traffic* in the middle of the corner, then back into your own lane at the exit. sudo's home course is one way, so he hasn't gotten over the fear of turning into the oncoming lane during right hand turns as well as ryosuke has, that's why ryosuke knew he could carry more speed around the outside and take the race lead.
That L for Takumi doesn't count cause Kyoichi himself said that he didn't count it as an actual race it was more like Kyoichi was trying to prove a point for Takumi like teach him how it feels to lose.
The Trueno (Takumi's car) and the Levin that passes Kenji both use the AE86 chassis (both are equipped with the DOHC (Dual-Overhead Cam) engine. Itsuki's Levin is an AE85, which has a SOHC (Single Overhead Cam) engine. I'm not nearly as familiar with Levins as I am Truenos/Corollas, but I do wonder how Iketani & Kenji were able to determine this car was an 86 just by looking at it pass, seeing as it's body is literally identical to Itsuki's Levin. In an earlier episode when Itsuki mistakenly buys his AE85 thinking it's AE86, Iketani & Kenji tease him for not, "checking under the hood to make sure it's DOHC," suggesting that one would be unable to confirm a Levin is an AE86 without checking to see which engine it has.
Technical explanation: Ryosuke blocked Kyoichi in such a way that he couldnt use the 4 wheel drift. So he was stuck behind Ryosuke. You may call it kinda dirty tactics, but it definitely works. Japanese people (like for example the British) drive on the wrong side of the road, so in their case, right turns are the ones when you have to be aware of the incoming traffic. Kyoichi´s home course (Irohazaka in Tochigi prefecture) is a one way road, where the other way goes in the next valley, so he never have to be afraid of a head-on collision. His training in motorsport also didnt help with that. If they drove on a racing circuit, he´d likely win. Also, Kyoichi´s car is not necessarily faster, but it can definitely transfer more power to the asphalt due to its AWD. Otherwise there is not much to explain in these episodes. At least when it comes to stuff that hasnt been explained in other comments...
No such things as "wrong side of the road tho", It is weird that people still quoted it. Moreover it's just basically between american/french and british adaptation. Countries that drive on the left side were due to british colony, it was also easier for most right handed people to be in more control as a defense mechanism for oncoming opposite direction by bad drivers. Most of the british commonwealth and far east civilization do drive on the left
forcing an opponent racer to take a tighter line than ideal is completely fair game, nothing dirty about that. Also, Kyoichi's Evo is 100% faster than Ryosuke' RX7
22:40 that's why you need "BUCKET SEATS">RACING SEATS. to keep you planted on the seat when turning hard. this is why normal generic seats does not work well for racing. because you're getting thrown around, your butt slides side to side and you're trying to keep your body on the seat.
Adding in even though I am late: most accidents on corners happen on right turns. (I believe the statistics is around 70%) Now I know that Japan has their traffic on the "wrong side" but the situation switches up in street racing and will be pretty much the same thing as is with right side roads. In blind corners, accidents happen because there's no extra space to adjust if something happens. If you're going blind on the left turn, there's still the left hand side of the road. In Japanese street racing, it's worse because you're going into incoming traffic if you treat the road as a racing circuit- not only are you blind and voluntarily giving away the extra room you have, you're also going against traffic.
What's crazy is you can actually hear the slop in the wrist pin when they do the closeups of the engine. That had to be a dead giveaway for any true car guy what was happening that race
I remember when I first watched the last episode I didn’t watch another Initial D episode for a few days because I just couldn’t watch another episode like nothing happened. I was so sad and angry it felt like I lost a dear friend.
Takumi : I don't feel like talking to you Moment later... Takumi : Woman ☕ Bruh... Takumi smoked Mogi harder than any racers he did, "Good luck with the Mercedes Guy" what a legendary thot destroyer quote in anime. For that bro, he just transfer the L to Mogi we all good 😎
There was 2 Levins and Truenos The normal versions: AE85, the Trueno and Levin in their more mundane version. The Sportier ones: AE86, Levin and Trueno, both dust the AE85 variants on engine and undercarriage as well as LSD on the drivetrain.
The thing about kyoichi is that he thinks that circuit race is the fastest driving style hence why he constantly wants to challenge ryosuke's theory of racing which he believes that street racing is the fastest driving.
It was not shown here, but in the manga, it is actually shown that Natsuki's best friend was the one putting the notes in Takumi's locker. Natsuki's best friend's dad is natsuki's sugar daddy lmao. She was 16 when she started selling her body to him. Weird though, women usually get those types of relationships after trying serious ones, but in here, that was natsuki's first relationship and because she's young, she didn't realize it was wrong until she felt true love with Takumi.
"and look he gon' get dripped out like Ryosuke and have a cup of tea bro" that one got me fr ahah Ryosuke always sippin' tea in season one always dripped out
13:04 close but no kyoichi uses motorsport racing techniques/dirt tarmac Rallye/hillclimb racing while ryosuke uses circuit racing techniques which is you're usual track racing you see on tv all over the world. takumi is more of a street racer since he only races on the touge, but you have to use all different techniques on the roads since each road is specifically different, and uneven unlike racing tracks that are made specifically for racing.
i like to get stickers of stuff i dont like and cut them in half and put them upside down just like emperors. theyve always been my favorite bad guys of the show
Just to clarify how Kyoichi lost: Kyoichi normally races his Evo III on closed circuits (racetracks), so he doesn't have to worry about oncoming traffic. However, when racing on the street, using the best line through right-hand turns requires moving into the oncoming lane, and since most mountain pass turns are blind, Kyoichi doesn't move as far to the right-hand inside as he does the left-hand inside (because he's instinctively concerned about unforeseen oncoming cars). This is why Ryosuke says that he "stinks at right-hand turns." Since Ryosuke's strengths are in his "street skills," he's learned to ignore the fear of oncoming traffic and attack right-handers as hard as left-handers. Incidentally, I never quite understood though how this plays into his final move as Ryosuke doesn't attack from the inside, but rather the outside. The main reason Ryosuke wins is because he moves alongside Kyoichi before entering the right-hand turn, and then moves through the turn on the outside. The road immediately switches to a left-hand turn, which puts Ryosuke on the inside line.
Honestly it is very sad I had to take a day break after that episode as well because it brought back some memories as its not uncommon for a motor to blow up while racing or drifting and I remember mine blowing up after drifting and it destroyed my ngl, I cried when it first happened.
AE85 and AE86 is basically the same car, you can't tell the difference between them until you hear the engine noise AE86 sold as Sprinter Trueno and Corolla Levin Sprinter Trueno has Popup Headlights (Takumi's car) Corolla Levin has fixed headlights (like you see there) And come in two different body style, Hatchback (Takumi's car) and coupē
Also, if you want to find 3rd Stage, it's not a series but a movie. That's the info that I can say to you... Just reminding you... Thank me if you find it...
the difference between an 86 and an 85 isn't the body style. both the AE86 and AE85 came in two main variants: levin and trueno. the levin has fixed headlights, and the trueno has pop-ups. the levin and trueno also came in 2-door and hatchback models. now, the real difference between the 86 and 85 is the engines. the 86 has the legendary 4A-GE, a 16-valve Dual Overhead Cam (DOHC) engine with decent mpower output at the time. it was and still is very popular due to its sound, its high tuning potential, and (of course) being featured in Initial D. it also had all-wheel disc brakes. the AE85 had more downsides than good sides. for example: -AE85 has a carbed single cam 1500 engine (3A-U) -No EFI wiring or fuses, different fuel line setup. -Mechanical cable clutch, not hydraulic. -Requires bulkhead mod and AE86 pedals to fit AE86 hydraulic clutch. -Drum brakes rear (disc conversion requires complete axle) -Non-LSD (limited-slip differential) axle with different shafts to AE86 -Shocks and springs aren't to AE86 spec -Interior trim is VERY different, seats aren't as supportive etc. Im sure theres many other problems that need to be addressed but i don't wanna google it all this is why Itsuki got laughed at when it was revealed he had an 85 instead of an 86. it's like pulling up to a drag race in a stock 04 camry with the 2.4L engine and saying you can take on a charger. comparing an ae86 to an ae85 is like comparing a dragon to a newt. there's no contest.
Jayk AE85 / 86 in fact, the same difference exists only in the internal structure, yes AE86and comes in four variants Levin Hatchback, Trueno Hatchback, Levin Coupe, Trueno Coupe. Sorry for my English, i am Russian.(please don't hate me for this ....I don't care about the situation in the world at all!)
Another thing is that Bunta wanted Takumi to get an L, because He wanted Takumi to feel the 86's 4AGE engine's full power, deeply inside of his mind and nerves. NGL changing it to Initial L, well it's a reasonable change It is counted as an L. That's the AE86 LEVIN, the twin sister to Takumi's AE86 TRUENO. Difference? The Levin has Fixed headlights, the Trueno has Pop up headlights. It has a Turbo slapped on it, probably around 190 horsepower or higher. Ryosuke's precision in analysis is really scary not gonna lie, it makes you feel like He's like an A.I. or something. Here's a slight hint of that engine, if the previous 86 engine was James Bond? This Engine is more like John Wick.
Episode 8 of this Stage, is one of the best of the whole series. At least I think it has two of the best moments of the series. One, is Takumi's rejection of Mogi, and that lapidary phrase when he mentions the guy with the Mercedez... He just need to throw a microphone, haha.... And the other one, when the new engine is installed, and in the tests, Bunta, the great Bunta, gets hurt. And he says that this car scares him now. I am a writer and well, I know how to recognize when there is a similarity of scenes... somehow, I compare the scene of 86 being a wild beast, a wild horse that is capable of throwing to the ground, to an experienced cowboy like Bunta. Or a lion that has just bitten or scratched its new owner. And this gives me a lot of hype... There is something that I notice, that I still have a big doubt about the engine. Because in the Spanish version, when he mentions where he got the engine from, he mentions the rally and the B class. Class B was one of the most dangerous and was banned due to the deaths and accidents that occurred. That is to say, class B, were powerful engines for large vehicles, but put in a smaller, lighter car. But I see that here in the English version, they mention class A, which I am not aware of. Anyway, I think the idea is the same: a powerful rally engine, put in a small and light car like the AE-86.
The race between Ryosuke and Kyoichi was definitely really good! Also while not included in second stage, Keisuke did race against the Emperor team too on the same night and he beat the White EVO 4. It's only shown in Initial D Battle stage but you can search it up on RUclips "Initial D - RX7 VS EVO" and you can see the race there 🙂
In all honesty it’s kind of a loss as it’s poor preparation to not continuously check over your car and replace stuff as it gets worn when your funds allow you to. However if it happens out of the blue and it’s just a catastrophic failure then I wouldn’t 100% count it as a loss as it could be a part that got installed wrong by a technician that is completely out of your control. So it really depends though his case makes it more of a loss because he was beating on the car and not expecting something to happen. Idk if he would have one, BUT I know his car would have finished the race if he did it a lot sooner as the car was healthier.
I dont wanna spoil it too much, but the 86s engine is from an ACTUAL RACE CAR now, its based on a normal 86 engine, but its amazingly tuned. You will see how good it is later
Does it count as an L , yes. It was an odd situation as kyoichi didn't consider it a race but instead a lesson since he didn't see it as a challenge and wanted takumi to understand that. BUT he also knew that beating him would be seen by everyone and that's all that really mattered. Takumi didn't finish the race that's all that matters, he lost and that's how everyone will see it. Doesn't matter if it was skill or the car breaking You could run a 100m dash and have a big lead over everyone, but if you trip right before the finish line that's it..
If it's not a loss because the engine, did Takumi really win when the guys had tire issues? It's an L. He shouldn't have pushed his car beyond it's limits and doing crazy gutter tricks.
Takumi counts it as an L. So that's all that matters except when................race............at..........on....................and................. Some more good racing coming until ...........D. - be careful of the other spoilers that do exist.
To me its not a real race cause the performance of there cars is too much. Both Takumi and Ryosuke using cars from early 1980s and its already almost the year 2000 when the Evo 3 was released. The evo gang is too arrogant.
The 86 came in 2 main versions: The Levin and the Trueno.
Takumi drives a Trueno, and in this episode we see a Levin passing Kenji. They are basically the same car though, with the main difference being that the Trueno has Pop-up headlights.

Trueno is spanish for thunder and levin was lightning in old english 🙂
22:50 without giving you spoilers, the only thing I can say about this engin is that it is indeed a "RACING ONLY" engine.
Keisuke is a bit of an asshole sometimes
But inside he also cares for Takumi
And I love his character
He doesn't care for him, but he respects him. I think that's what comes across, kueskei isn't so much of an ass as he's just very proud and cocky

From here out theyre gonna talk a lot more about "Gunma" "Saitama" and stuff, which are prefectures in Japan, basically you can think of them like states here in the US. Just mentioning cause you said "city of gunma" at 8:24 so i wanted to give some scale to it :)
I always laugh so hard when you put in the writer of the show, it's just brilliant :D
Imma tell you breh, no spoilers, but I'd suggest doing 9 and 10 as single episodes... I think you're going to want to do 11-13 as a set.
i agree
We need it, but prob on next Friday for him to have more time for editing
Every upload finna be 2+ now
hey man i've been watching your series as I'm rewatching initial d with my friend, i'd love to tell you about some of the race details and why things work throughout the series.

Technical explanation:
Ryosuke blocked Kyoichi in such a way that he couldnt use the 4 wheel drift. So he was stuck behind Ryosuke. You may call it kinda dirty tactics, but it definitely works. Japanese people (like for example the British) drive on the wrong side of the road, so in their case, right turns are the ones when you have to be aware of the incoming traffic. A lot of Asia countries drive the "wrong side" of the road. Im from Malaysia and i think all of South East Asia drive like that.
No such things as "wrong side of the road tho", It is weird that people still quoted it. Moreover it's just basically between american/french and british adaptation. Geeeeeeez bro this episode was firrrrre your reaction was insane and the race was straight heat as ryosuke is my favorite character
if he going to watch the extra stages que aren't gonna tell him about the bathing scenes ok?
Yes xD
I had to take a research break after that scene if you know what I mean.

that's why you need "BUCKET SEATS">RACING SEATS. to keep you planted on the seat when turning hard. this is why normal generic seats does not work well for racing.
because you're getting thrown around, your butt slides side to side and you're trying to keep your body on the seat.

Bruh... Takumi smoked Mogi harder than any racers he did, "Good luck with the Mercedes Guy" what a legendary thot destroyer quote in anime. For that bro, he just transfer the L to Mogi we all good 😎

The NEw Engine sound way too good, goosebumps everytime
Just to clarify how Kyoichi lost:
Kyoichi normally races his Evo III on closed circuits (racetracks), so he doesn't have to worry about oncoming traffic.
Episode 8 of the 2nd stage still to this day my favorite episode of the 2nd stage
Honestly it is very sad I had to take a day break after that episode as well because it brought back some memories as its not uncommon for a motor to blow up while racing or drifting and I remember mine blowing up after drifting and it destroyed my ngl, I cried when it first happened.
LMAOOOOOOO the Drama got you goin harder than the Races 🤣🤣
When kyoichi was talking to ryosuke like it cut to it in the race that was a flashback
AE85 and AE86 is basically the same car, you can't tell the difference between them until you hear the engine noise
AE86 sold as Sprinter Trueno and Corolla Levin
Sprinter Trueno has Popup Headlights (Takumi's car)
Corolla Levin has fixed headlights (like you see there)
And come in two different body style, Hatchback (Takumi's car) and coupē
Also, if you want to find 3rd Stage, it's not a series but a movie. That's the info that I can say to you...
Just reminding you...
Thank me if you find it...
Mogi got the infinity stunlock 💀
the difference between an 86 and an 85 isn't the body style. both the AE86 and AE85 came in two main variants: levin and trueno. the levin has fixed headlights, and the trueno has pop-ups. the levin and trueno also came in 2-door and hatchback models.
now, the real difference between the 86 and 85 is the engines. the 86 has the legendary 4A-GE, a 16-valve Dual Overhead Cam (DOHC) engine with decent mpower output at the time. it was and still is very popular due to its sound, its high tuning potential, and (of course) being featured in Initial D. it also had all-wheel disc brakes.
the AE85 had more downsides than good sides. for example:
-AE85 has a carbed single cam 1500 engine (3A-U)
-No EFI wiring or fuses, different fuel line setup.
-Mechanical cable clutch, not hydraulic.
-Requires bulkhead mod and AE86 pedals to fit AE86 hydraulic clutch.
-Drum brakes rear (disc conversion requires complete axle)
-Non-LSD (limited-slip differential) axle with different shafts to AE86
-Shocks and springs aren't to AE86 spec
-Interior trim is VERY different, seats aren't as supportive etc.
Im sure theres many other problems that need to be addressed but i don't wanna google it all
this is why Itsuki got laughed at when it was revealed he had an 85 instead of an 86. it's like pulling up to a drag race in a stock 04 camry with the 2.4L engine and saying you can take on a charger. comparing an ae86 to an ae85 is like comparing a dragon to a newt. there's no contest.

Imagine being Takumi, on the same night he found out his gf was cheating on him he lost his race after being undefeated.
The race between Ryosuke and Kyoichi was definitely really good! Also while not included in second stage, Keisuke did race against the Emperor team too on the same night and he beat the White EVO 4. It's only shown in Initial D Battle stage but you can search it up on RUclips "Initial D - RX7 VS EVO" and you can see the race there 🙂
first! lets go hype hype hype
Absolute W! 🔥
Dat 86 levin rims are fire 🔥
If u think it's wild now just wait for 4 and 5 stage 3 is a movie I think btw
In all honesty it’s kind of a loss as it’s poor preparation to not continuously check over your car and replace stuff as it gets worn when your funds allow you to. However if it happens out of the blue and it’s just a catastrophic failure then I wouldn’t 100% count it as a loss as it could be a part that got installed wrong by a technician that is completely out of your control. So it really depends though his case makes it more of a loss because he was beating on the car and not expecting something to happen. Idk if he would have one, BUT I know his car would have finished the race if he did it a lot sooner as the car was healthier.
Fuck yes dude
I dont wanna spoil it too much, but the 86s engine is from an ACTUAL RACE CAR now, its based on a normal 86 engine, but its amazingly tuned. You will see how good it is later
Dude, that's a spoiler
Does it count as an L , yes.
It was an odd situation as kyoichi didn't consider it a race but instead a lesson since he didn't see it as a challenge and wanted takumi to understand that. BUT he also knew that beating him would be seen by everyone and that's all that really mattered.
Takumi didn't finish the race that's all that matters, he lost and that's how everyone will see it. Doesn't matter if it was skill or the car breaking
You could run a 100m dash and have a big lead over everyone, but if you trip right before the finish line that's it..
Oh yeah!!)
TAKUMI AINT A SIMP
If it's not a loss because the engine, did Takumi really win when the guys had tire issues? It's an L. He shouldn't have pushed his car beyond it's limits and doing crazy gutter tricks.
It was a race, engine blowout is no reason not to count.
Subtle. The b is silent 😘. This is proof I listen to everything you say 😋
O _ O 2: Electric Boogaloo
Takumi counts it as an L. So that's all that matters except when................race............at..........on....................and.................
Some more good racing coming until ...........D.
- be careful of the other spoilers that do exist.
Try Kenobi mightiest disciple
Kenichi
im pretty sure "levin" is pronounced like 11. (e)leven
Keisuke Is A Homie 4ever
Definitely an L for Takumi
To me its not a real race cause the performance of there cars is too much. Both Takumi and Ryosuke using cars from early 1980s and its already almost the year 2000 when the Evo 3 was released. The evo gang is too arrogant.
