  • Riding is actually pretty easy compared to getting on the unicycle. Once you're in your riding groove, you can just flow. Mounting the unicycle, however, is its own skill set.
I break down the three main, if not ONLY, categories of mounting so you can pick and choose which works best for you. I encourage you to try all and see what works best. Once you have a favorite, you can expand your skills and try some more.
The goal here if for you to not only ride, but get on and ride. Good luck!

Great video! One of the most detailed and helpful lessons about freemount in RUclips. I'm still struggling to do freemount. I'll try to apply what you taught. Many thanks. Keep up the good work.

Dan, this is fantastic! I've been riding for more than two years, but have not mastered self-mounting. I took up unicycling at the beginning of the pandemic because my teenage son got one for Christmas and I promised him I'd learn if he did. He's much better than me, of course. The alleys in your video look like Chicago. Is that where you are? We live in Rogers Park.

What an eye! Yes I’m in Chicago. I actually have a Logan Square Learn to Ride event once a month at Haas park if you and your son are interested. We can totally work on mounting 😁
Anyways. Yeah mounting is tough man - I’m super impressed you’re sticking with it. I’m down to help anyway I can

still struggling to mount Dan, working hard on it, I've free mounted a few times, but because I put way too much weight on my rear pedal I keep rolling back, a few times I managed to turn that into forward motion and ride off, but I want to do the classic mount. Great vid mate. One other thing that I really struggle with, amongst many others but feel I should be able to do this easily by now is turning. You are looking into making a vid on riding distances for me, amazing you offered that Dan, really appreciate that, but could I push the friendship mate and ask you to do a tutorial on turning please. I can do long slow turns following footpaths, and short jerky ones using hips a bit but I see people doing small circles so smoothly, all my turns under around 15 meters are jerky. I've tried using my arms to transfer weight, leaning, looking in that direction, which helps a bit but mostly I fall every time I initiate the turn unless I do the jerky type. I can ride hundreds of metres at a time, can't believe I can't ride small circles by now. My goal is to easily ride small figure 8's. love your work Dan.

On it! I’ll make a turning tutorial. I just need to solidify a few steps but I’ll be on it! I appreciate the love too

@kengoold7157 I finally got it done! Some snow and cold made its way into the video but here’s what I got on turning. I’d love to hear your thoughts.

I also heard learning an unstable mount is a bit easier on downward slope :/
haven't tested it yet... but ye, hope it helps :)

Hey! Yeah that’d make sense as the hill would make it harder for the unicycle to roll backwards. I’d agree with that
