Guys. I am almost 70 years old. I saw my first Ranger game at age 11 in the old MSG. Not the MSG that is at its current location. I have been watching the team almost 60 years and I only have 1994 as a championship memory. Before that, I was not even born when they last won in 1940.
So, can you imagine the heartbreak I have endured? This team this year was the best team since 1994. But it's not the only very good Ranger team to have lost. There was 1979 against Montreal. There was 1972 against Boston. And of course the loss to Los Angeles in 2014.
And you know what I feel now on this day? I am so grateful that I had all these years to be a Ranger fan. There is a Taoist expression you probably already know, "It's not the goal, it's the journey in life that matters most." I know that you understand but 40 years on from now you will really understand.
My only sorrow regarding the Rangers is that I won't have another 60 years to see future teams. That is my greatest sorrow about having to someday die. If I am lucky then I might have another 15 years.
I really want to see the Rangers new guys, new teams, and maybe even one more championship year. Can you imagine how many people who have already died must have felt the same way?
You are young. Please keep the passion and know that these days will always be among the most painful days you will experience. The day after elimination... Every year, except one. But the pain will pass and supporting the team as they go forward will bring you much joy. And who knows, maybe you guys will experience a future Ranger dynasty. You never know...

Very well said. I agree completely - it's about the journey. And although we're still waiting for that Cup, there's a lot to be happy about. Drury has gotten this team to 2 ECF in 3 years. Since 2011-12 the Rangers have been among the NHL's top teams more often than not. We've had so many exciting playoff runs over the past decade plus. The organization is in better long-term shape than at any other time in its history. They have the game's best goaltender and a potential star in Laffreniere. They're very close. If Drury makes the right moves he can get us over the hump.

For what it's worth, I have a friend who played professional hockey until he blew out his knee. He was a defenseman and he is a big, gritty, tough s.o.b. He also makes most of his living betting hockey these days. He knows match-ups better than anyone I have ever met. He told me without any doubt that the Panthers would beat the Rangers in six. He is not a fan of any particular team but he does appreciate certain players while he thinks other players are pansies...
He has told me more than once that hockey is all about the match-ups. You build a team with guys who will win match-ups against the players on the two or three teams that you are most likely to face in the playoffs. Nothing else matters (with the exception of a having a very good goalie and coaching staff).
The Panthers did this successfully because they planned for the match-ups in advance. So, it wasn't that Maurice was better than Laffy. What happened is that the Panthers GM is better than Drury.
That being said, I asked him how do the Rangers going forward prepare for a match-up against Florida next year. He said that Drury has to find the players who will match up better against the Panthers. Decide who they are, sign them if you can, and cut the flotsam. Rangers are great puck managers but the Rangers also need more size on the back end and on the front end too.
He says that Lingren for all his heart is just too small to be a 1/2 defenseman. That's why he is always hurt in the playoffs. He likes Miller but he says Miller is not yet ready for prime time. He may be better than Lingren going forward because Miller is a bigger boy. But he is still unproven as a truly responsible d man against top line offensive players. He thinks he will be better next year. Lingren will not be better.
He says Truba cost the Rangers the series and that making him captain was a Drury mistake.
He says Krider is about the only beast that plays on the Rangers and that he consistently matches up well against almost all other players. He made money betting Krider a lot during the season. He said that Zabanajad's game has diminished ever since he had his baby daughter born back in September. He was never that 'hard' but he has softened up even more.
Panarian is a great play maker but he needs bigger, tougher, s.o.bs on his line with him.
Lafy looks like the real deal and is becoming a beast. Might like to see him play with Panarian going forward.
Kako is probably a bust and is definitely on his way out of New York.
Schneider is not there yet but should be a solid 3/4 going forward in a year or two.
He likes Rempe but he's still almost in diapers. But he looks like a baby Godzilla who can play on the fourth line next year. He might get even better if he learns how to finish. My friend says that Rempe might actually profit a lot from playing on the line with Panarin and that he can learn to be a net front presence like Krider...

Although that was honestly barely coherent at certain moments, and some of it is also contradictory, some of it was on point as well.
Mainly they are slow and prob too small overall. They are mentally soft more than physically soft quite often and defense is an issue but less of an issue with Igor. instead if they had acored 2 powerplay goals, they prob win the series in spite of being outplayed

Wanted to wait a day before posting my Rangers thoughts. Instead of a long, boring story, I'll stick to points...
    1. It was a GREAT regular season. Went to 4 games (3-1).
    2. First two rounds of playoffs (even after the Carolina scare) gave me great hope.
    3. We were COMPLETELY DOMINATED by the Florida Panthers in round 3. If not for the GREAT play of IGOR, we SHOULD'VE been SWEPT!
    After series thoughts:
3.1 Laviolette WAS outcoached by Maurice.
3.2 Miller is NOTHING but a TURNOVER machine!
3.3 Trouba might as well have been wearing a Panthers Jersey! He did more for them.
3.4 Other than LaFranniere, Goodrow, Trochek, Lindgren and of course, Igor....WTF??????????????
    Final thoughts:
    4. Changes MUST BE MADE! I LOVE this team, and have been a die-hard fan since 1969 and its been 56 years with 1 CUP! Lots of great years, lots of close calls, lots of great players, but 1 CUP! If not for salary cap constraints, and BIG contracts with no move clauses, it will be difficult to find the right pieces needed to get the holy grail, but it CAN be done!
4.1 Trade Miller & Kakko and take whatever draft picks you can get. The dumping of a combined $8 or $9 million is enough of a return. UNLESS, they can somehow turn Miller BACK into a forward (he played forward in college some). He is a HORRIBLE defenseman, who refuses to use his body and relies solely on his stick to defend, and as mentioned earlier, a turnover machine!
4.2 ABSOLUTELY MUST buy out Trouba. He is nothing but a liability.
4.3 This is the tough one. Either, Zibanejad of Panarin has to be traded for a more physical Center/LW. It hurts to even type this, as I love them both, but 3 years in a row of playoff ineptness when it counts from both is enough.
4.4 Along with young guys making an impact next year like Brennan Othman, Adam Sykora and Zac Jones (among others), I'd really like to see F/A or trade additions such as Jake DeBrusk & Brady Tkaczuk be brought in!
All in all a great season that ended in disappointment by losing to simply a better Florida Panther team.

1994 taught me that it's not worth getting too emotionally invested in something over which you have no control. No matter how closely you follow the team or how many games you watch or how much you know, nothing you do will affect what happens on the ice. And even if they win the Stanley Cup, it's not going to improve your life in any lasting way. Sure, there will be celebrations and a parade and it will be fun, and you'll be proud of your team, but in a few weeks all of that goes away and the world returns to normal and your life is no different. It's better to just sit back and enjoy the games. See every season and every playoff run as an opportunity for some enjoyment and community, but don't get so into it that it kills you when they lose.

I think I sounded a lot like Avery when the devils would come up short. Losing like the playoffs hurts like hell but I will say, you’re only 26 and as you get older, you will realize that there are more important things in life than your sports teams. The disappointment will still be there, but it won’t last nearly as long as I’m sure it will last now. Believe me I’m as die hard of a devil fan as there is, but I’ve just learned over the years to let it go a lot sooner when they disappoint me.

Ive been going to that building since 1984, they won the cup when i was 13 and i took it for granted. I truly thought I would have seen one or two more in between, the worst being the Henrik years how we let the greatest goalie of his generation not win a cup. My son now shares the same sentiment he is 12 and is hurting, Drury has to straight out ask Panarin, Mika hey do you care about individual accomplishments or do you want a cup? Panarin is 32 years old. He’s not going to change into what he needs to be in the postseason unfortunately. I thought after the great regular season he had he would be different in this postseason, but again his size and unwillingness to forecheck, take hits, do the dirty stuff, is why he (and obviously Mika) are tradeable. I think allllll the ‘94 comparisons really took us fans away from reality. We may have won the President’s Trophy, but I don’t think there was ever a point that I was convinced we were a cut above any team. This wasn’t a roster that I could say had no holes - far from it. We all know that the fucking first line RW has been a revolving door for three years. All these teams were so close. We had a damn good shot, but unfortunately the Panthers are the better team. Honestly winning the Presidents trophy is pretty much negative thing for your team most of the time, because it means you spent way way too much energy and effort for overly long and meaningless regular season. Most seasoned teams clearly let's down the gas in near end of the regular season once they're sure that they are in the playoffs, just to reserve energy and or test optional line combinations for the playoffs.
Tamba learned it in hard way against columbus, ever since they stopped trying in regular season, this year Florida perfected their system in their hot streak and after that coasted end of the regular season. Kings coasted in their second cup regular season and so on. Season just is too long for it, especially if your teams playstyle is taxing.
Chicago iirc is last team that won both regular season and cup together, but they just were _that_ good of a team, real dynasty with really savvy management.

Lafreniere is going to be a Power-FW Super Star; Cuylle is going to be good; Chytil is Top-6; Kakko will emerge into a solid defensive 3rd Liner; sounds like Perreault and Othmann play with a lot of vigor; Sykora might elevate when he gets to the NHL. Learn to breakout of there zone and not panic and flip the puck in the air every time

We did not do that all year. Our transition is what won us games. Playoffs roll around and we played scared and just flipped pucks blindly, usually to the other team.

After a night of being pissed it’s really not the end of the world I think the core could work but it’s a big offseason they have to try and move off some guys for some real pieces that will help in playoffs try to get rid of Trouba however you can get rid of Kakko let Lindgren walk if he asks for more money and he can’t play with fox gotta split up Mika and Kreider stuff like that has to happen

Trouba has to go. The buyout terms aren't bad, the cap is going up buy a bit more than what his hit would be, and it's simply addition by subtraction. It's mindblowing that he started the first 20-30% of the season playing so well and then absolutely fell off a cliff. And he cost us goal after goal in the playoffs
Mika is not a 1C. Our top line was never a top line for a President's winner. The RW situation made it even more of a joke.

I hope to God we let Trouba go and we may have to think about shopping zibanjead while we can get someone in return… I never expected this years team to do what they did and it surely does sting because this team had IT… my lord it hurts was 10 when they raised lord stanley I thought last years team had the pieces… At the end of the day Florida was the better team they got outworked and outplayed in the heavy areas of the game..cap hell for real and our top players never get the job done when it matters….drury needs to get creative at the end of the day lets see what happens boys

Avery, why would you want to represent a team from a place you don’t want to live? I’ve been a lifelong Panthers fan, and there was a time when a “rebuild” was a lie. For the first time in my life I feel like we have an ownership group that cares about hockey, not entertainment. Represent your neighbors, your community, and where you’re from. I love the cats and they are a group to be admired. Sorry to New York, but if you live down here, you see gators in your backyard, you’re from Florida.

That's pure nonsense. The Rangers are either in your blood or not. I talk hockey with Ranger fans who live all over the world. I live in Tampa and despise the Lightning and their fans. LGR!!!

They got leveled because they had no other choice than to take it, Cody. You cant risk taking a penalty dude. What kind of craziness are you talking here?! Panthers are an awesome team, but they also got the officiating advantage (referring to your comment about getting hit in the face and just taking it) They had to!

Lousy contracts were given boyz! Started with Gorton and JD and extended with Drury. Alot of money held up in soft players.

Igor, Fox, Trochek, Laffy, everyone else can go. Let All UFA's go. Of the RFA's only Schneider needs a contract. Get rid of Trouba and give C to Trochek. Need a 1RW and 1LD. Build up bottom 6 and blueline.

Buy out the Painter. Breakup the boyfriend’s, (Cut Mika). Fire Laviolette. Otherwise stop whining because this is what we get for not doing what we need to do. Chris Kreider and Mika Zibinejad will NEVER win a cup, so them on our roster means….
