    Great video. I’ve just ordered some of these fixings to hang my two expansion vessels onto a metal stud wall where I can’t go into the studs (there’s only one in the back of the cupboard anyway). The plumbers that had the contract off Redrow homes fitted two vessels using an off cut of MDF skirting and some plastic wall plus and it started to come away from the wall after (after a few years mind). These fixings should hold nicely.

    I've always used original Snap Toggle fixing which are brilliant. Not sure I would swap due to the hassle of pull string 2 small screws etc. That said I think I'll get some and try them although as an audio engineer it will be hard to move away from Snap toggles simply because they are easy to install and hold very similar, if not more weight. Good void showing this product though.

    Thanks for posting this. I don't know how well these would work for my task--to support a hose reel onto vinyl siding with OSB behind it. But these do sure hold the load well. My issue will be the siding buckling when tightening the screws. But I might still give these a go if all else fails.

    i was sharpening up my inch wide chisel yesterday with a slate and oil block. doesn't sound very interesting. but they were given to me by my next door neighbour shortly before she died. she was 103 and a half and they belonged to her father. he was a master carpenter and plasterer. it's mad that i'm using tools that are probably over 150 years old and they still do the job.

    I will be ordering these to hang a tv.
    These seem to have been designed to eliminate 'torn' drywall fails because they have the full round plastic thread plug that fills the hole that has been drilled thus minimising the drilled compromised drilled drywall. This I believe is where most of the other fixings fail in there design, and seems strange that the other companies have not picked up on this!??.

    I can't believe plastic fixings can hold roughly 275Lbs. That's pretty good, I think. I'm usually able to find the framing to fix heavy items to the wall, but I think I'll start using these instead of toggle bolts to fix to drywall now. Thanks for the info!

    Looks like an awesome product, would be perfect for fixing large TVs, or for replacing smaller fixings that have failed.
    In your test it looks like the plasterboard failed, not the fixings.
    I reckon if you oriented them horizontally, rather than vertically, you'd get substantially more weight on there.

    Interesting. Also worth noting that the fixing would fail at a lower load, if the bricks etc weren't stacked right against the wall. The failure load in your experiment is a "best case scenario" as the bricks etc are right against the wall, but when assessing failure loads it is best to look at the "worst case scenario" loading. A good experiment though.

    Very informative video as usual, thanks for that. How would you rate these versus snap toggles? I have an insulated plasterboard (38mm insulation)and need to hang a 1200mm double radiator. I have bought some snap toggles, but these look very good... just wondering what your thoughts on which would be better suited for this kind of job. Thanks.

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  8 лет назад

      If there is a solid wall behind I would use this method- ruclips.net/video/7DGGUbbbBZI/видео.html
      Insulated plasterboard can be difficult to fix to as the insulation can compress, loosening the fixing.
      Perhaps GripIt fixings would be better (if it's not a solid wall behind the plasterboard) ruclips.net/video/szx7nMRZSIY/видео.html
      You would also need the GripIt undercutting tool to cut away the insulation from around the hole.

    • @patrickjlyons
      @patrickjlyons 8 лет назад

      Thanks for that - there is a gap and a solid wall behind the insulated plaster board, the space-plug looks like it would be best.

    Hi. I am wanting to use these for a tv bracket but the plasterboard is at least double the thickness to that of standard 10mm plasterboard. Will I be able to get the plastic piece through the double thickness hole? I’m assuming if I can, I just need to use a longer screw to pull it together??

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  Год назад

      I’m not 100% certain. I would use snap toggles/zip fix fixings-
      ruclips.net/video/4r_MsgkXsBA/видео.html&pp
      You can get longer screws for those if necessary.
      You do need room behind the plasterboard, to be able to get the snap toggle to work though!

    What I like about these fixings is their strength... but what I don't like is the price and the fact that they have such a large disc at the front. The size seems necessary, but in several videos I have viewed on these fixings, there always seems to be some crushing (fracturing) of the plasterboard around the edges - especially at the bottom. I'm guessing that the curvature of the bar at the back is possibly a little too much - or the depth of the circular piece is not quite enough to bottom out onto the bar. (more likely) When the screws have pulled the bar fully in, there is (probably) still a gap to fill. Maybe this is because the depth is not enough. Seems to me, that the depth of the cylindrical part has to be exactly right - to match the thickness of the plasterboard including the paper coatings - otherwise the board can't cope with the pressure of the curved edges. Hope you get what I mean. I was thinking of buying 10 of these, but they come in packs of 4 or 8. Meaning I would have to buy 12 and pay for 2 I don't need - and at a total cost of about £24. That's £2 each (and £4 of that total "wasted")

      No, for a chandelier you need to put something solid between the joists by lifting the floorboards above.
      You could use a piece of plywood and two off cuts of 3*2 timber or similar to make something to fit in the gaps between the joists, depending on the weight of the chandelier

I actually think they could have held more if they had been orientated horizontally instead of vertically. Check the video at the end and see how the plasterboard broke and you will see what I mean.

    Was that a failure of the fixings at 125kg or a failure of the plasterboard?

      Plasterboard.

    excellent demo
    what is the max size screws that can be used?

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  8 лет назад

      Thanks, I think the screw supplied with them is about an inch and a half by 8
      I think if you used a larger diameter screw you would struggle as it is quite difficult to get the screw to cut the thread in the GeeFix initially, although you might be able to enlarge the hole with a drill.

    would you say these are not very clever if you have a bracket that has 3 holes in very close proximity to each other ? you would not be able to cut 3 x 25mm holes out.

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  3 года назад

      Yes, they are pretty much useless if the holes are close together.
      This might give you some ideas- ruclips.net/video/glzwY76O0d8/видео.html

    These are a basic but large snap toggle. Can you get the back peace through the hole at an angle as to not hit the other side of the plasterboard and not be able to get it through

      Apparently these will fit into a 30mm cavity, so they should work in almost every partition wall.

    Would you trust these enough to hang your brand new 50 odd inch 4 k tv with 😜I never thought about worrying about the strength of the drywall more so than fixing s themselves

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  8 лет назад

      +jerry o connor Yes as long as the fixing hole in the bracket were spaced apart as far as possible, it should be fine ;-)

    • @mrbadger9920
      @mrbadger9920 5 лет назад

      I wouldn't fix a 50" tv to plasterboard no matter what fixing I was using. The implications of a tv falling are too serious if it lands on someone, especially a child. Also, if the bracket is a pull out or swivel, the fixings will get a serious test.
      Any fixing is only as strong as the plasterboard. You can usually find a stud to get a couple of decent fixings on but may need to move the bracket to suit the wall or drill a couple of holes in the bracket to line up.

  • @gregsheehan1664
    @gregsheehan1664 4 года назад

    interesting, so the geefix isnt as strong as the wall toggle as shown in your other video weight test but it is more expensive, :/

    • @ultimatehandyman

      I guess the initial hole in the plasterboard weakens it significantly.
      Snap toggles are still my favourite plasterboard fixing ;-)

      Thanks. Yes, if the brackets had been wider these fixings would have held much more weight.

    Walls insulated with rock wool or king span and that's going to be a nightmare. Can't see the lads who have to wear gloves on sites, being too impressed with doing a weaving loom class just to get a fixing.
