My (sort-of) rant video about the new Amazon Prime show, My Lady Jane. It's not great. It's not even funny on its own merit. But to its credit (which I forgot to put in the video) the costumes may not be accurate but they were at least colourful and detailed. And they opted for more authentic Tudor-looking locations to film in instead of empty grey castles. But that alone can't save it from the bad acting and lack-lustre writing.
My speed draw of the Margaret of Anjou SIX persona is almost done and should find its way onto Tumblr shortly.

I think people just have to realize it’s meant to be fun and funny and not historically accurate at all. It’s easier for me to swallow than say, PG’s books, because no one is saying that this show is factual and only dialogue is made up. The authors and the showrunners aren’t saying that they are history experts. This show doesn’t take itself seriously, and the audience isn’t meant to either.

I don't think people expect 100% accuracy, but if you take a real story and change EVERYTHING about it - the plot, the realities, people's characters - and leave just the names... then what's the point of even using them? Just make a fictional story and let it stand on its own. It seems disrespectful to take real people (especially this specific person who died such an early violent death), who had their own real struggles, and present them as a fun fictional romp. For me it feels like a cheap attempt to monetise on the general interest in the Tudors while having no intention to respect the characters. If they wanted something fun, funny, and not historically accurate at all - they could've made it! Just change the names! No one would bat an eyelid! But if you claim that it's a retelling of the real story, you should stick to it in at least some aspects.

@@AW-uv3cb I don’t really see how it’s disrespectful. They like Jane as a historical figure and considering her tragic end, they wanted to write a fun and fantastical life for her. I think that’s kind of nice. When I was a kid, my dad used to tell me fantastical bedtime stories. I was always the main character and it was fun to imagine myself living those lives. This just reminds me of that.

@@RiseeReethey sexualized her a lot. she was just a teenage girl in real life, and she was a REAL person. felt so icky to me. plus i feel like this show was sort of marketed as “hey, jane grey’s life was so sad and lame, so we changed everything about it to make it more interesting!” sort of a disservice to the real jane in my opinion. plus i think she was depicted as an extreme “not like other girls” character, as in she was written like she was special and better than other women because she is intelligent and a virgin???? the opening scene was so fcking weird to me…

I honestly can understand a protective wish for Lady Jane Grey to have lived a long and happy life instead of being sacrificed for securing a disastrous political marriage, but This Fanficition was not the way to give it to her.
I hope the Actors had fun making it at least, but their time would have been better spent on a more accurate and compelling Tudor drama.
Fingers crossed that Season 2 of Wolf Hall is at least a worthwhile watch.
My advice? Watch Edward Bluemel in A Discovery of Witches instead.

It is fan fiction, but it came from a place of love for her. It seemed like a heartfelt tribute to her. The show has charm and at no point does it pretend to be history and that's ok, from my point of view. It made me realize that I can live with historical fiction that embraces either the history or the fiction and runs with one or the other, instead of pretending to be history when it's not. Plus, you could see details showing that they do know the real story, subtle hints and details.

Jane and her sisters are by far my favourite historical characters, but I actually liked the show. While it's not historically accurate, it seemed to me like a heartfelt tribute to her and that's something I really appreciated. It's unexpected, because I thought it was a really weird idea, but it worked. I'm usually in favour of accurate history and I would love to see a series/mini-series about her and her sisters' lives, but this was fine. It had an unexpected charm from my point of view.

god i hated this show so much 😭 for so many reasons. but whenever i give valid criticism of it online, people attack me saying “well it’s fantasy, it’s not meant to be accurate!” a show intentionally being anachronistic does not inherently mean it’s GOOD just because it’s inaccuracies were intentional creative choices :/ plus there is a difference between taking creative liberties with a character and just completely degrading them. my lady jane completely degrades mary and it honestly disgusted me. idc that it’s fictional, this show was a massive disappointment, i have very little good to say about it tbh

It's funny and thoughtful.

The character of Fitz makes me think that they've taken a bit of inspiration from the Farseer series by Robin Hobb, wherein the main character is named Fitz, and he is Witted, meaning he can speak with animals and form special bonds with them. Witted people are persecuted in Hobbs universe, and one of the common misunderstandings about them is that they can turn into animals. Also Fitz is described as having dark thick curly hair and darker skin, more or less exactly the dude on screen. They've just grabbed Fitz Farseer and dropped him in here.

What frustrates me about this series is the lack of love for these historical figures or bothering to go research other people with tropes Hollywood loves to market: You want an actual "warrior girl" or "girl power" historical story, look up Joan of Arc, Mary Ludwig Hays, Deborah Sampson, Hua Mulan, "Buffalo Calf Road Woman", The Trung Sisters, etc. Also, if you want historical gay characters (which Edward 6th wasn't) to make a movie/series about, go look up people like Richard Puller von Hohenburg, Harvey Milk, Oscar Wilde, Karl Heinrich Ulrichs, Maureen Colquhon, etc.
Why can't we get movies about these people instead of randomly turning these historical characters into tropes that they were documented not to be?!

I saw this as fiction and as a comedy. In the beginning the narrator basically said “fuck history I’ll write my own story.” I’m usually a stickler for facts. This show started out fiction. Not a historical tv series claiming it’s facts. That’s why enjoyed it.

Exactly! While I prefer historical fiction with more emphasis on history, the fact that this show embraced openly the fiction and ran with it made me like it a lot. You know from the first moment what you were going to see, it was honest about what it was. And through it all, I also saw love for the real story, details like Jane's real life signature being on the document with which she ended division laws (at the bottom of the paper, that's her real signature) or her speech at her trial (that was a moment where it felt like a defence of the real life Jane against the charges brought against her). I could see love in this show, heart, soul and it felt like a tribute to her. And that's more than enough for me.

One more thing and im done, i swear lol. I shouldve been born a Stanley as i can play both sides. I agree with the issues being presented here, so far. But online, im defending this show as most of the hate is about Edward being black. I appreciate this kind of take instead, as its pretty clear the ones online complaining are trying to hide their hate, and havent even watched the show. Because if a black king bothers you more than her being married to a horse, that she has fun time with, granted as a man, then its clear its not about the content of the show itself, but some deep rooted racism. Sorry but thats a fact.
