60 some odd years ago, I experienced the same thing. I remember it like it was yesterday. The pride I felt for completing my flight without killing myself or from bending my airplane fades after repeating that accomplishment thounds of times in many types of aircraft doesn’t in any way. Kim, you are a PILOT! No one can take that from you even if they wanted to. Congrats to the new pilot!

Kim -you did great. I'm at about 700 hours - single engine, instrument, commercial....and I still get doubts/nervous every time I fly. And then when I land and put away the airplane I wonder why. I'm very well trained, very conscious of safety and what I need to do to make each flight end safely/successfully, and still there are nerves. I think that's good. When those go away focus fades. You got this!

You’ve come so far and overcome so much! Congrats on all your progress! Learning to fly is extremely challenging, and those of us who have done it for a while make it look easier than it is. There are brand new student pilots who are struggling hard and looking at you now wondering how you make it look so easy! In aviation, you’re always learning, but it is so rewarding to make it to the point where you can hop in and be in total control of this machine and know all the rules and risks and systems and procedures you might need to get around safely and legally! Congrats!

How much did that send me back to my first solos. Damn right you should be proud. I did my training out of Peter OKinght in Tampa with a Tomahawk. Taking off to the south was right over Tampa Bay, to the north was right towards Tampa and on occasion, landing or departing over very large ships. God I miss that.

Excellent. The more you love it the more you learn. Overcoming fear is the challenge for all of us. That comes with experience but if you remember to ALWAYS think POSITVELY never any other way Best advice I can give is Never let emotions cloud your judgement. Prepare the future learn from the past but enjoy the moment , that is crucial and gets you to relax. The more relaxed you are the better and quicker the judgements will be. My experience comes from military ops too many years ago to remember. Remember learn learn learn never stop and positivity always . Good luck

I took off in a Piper Navajo once without securing the cockpit door. In my Defence a passenger in the seat next to me drew my attention away from the checklist. I got up to altitude in straight and level flight and closed the door. The rest of the flight and subsequent landing went as planned because I didn’t panic and remembered to “fly” the aircraft. Kim, mistakes are made in life but, it’s how you correct and manage them. Learn from every mistake and make fewer of them. Remember, every landing you can walk away from is a success! That goes for takeoff’s as well.

I know that feeling. I remember taking off from a Maryland airport heading home in a C150 to Chester County and not a few hundred feet up I hear this banging on the plane. For a moment it freaked me out, but as you said "Fly the Plane!" so making sure all was stable I looked around and noticed my lap seat belt was not fastened and the banging was the latch stuck outside the door (sigh). I only had 100 hours and I really debated what to do. I finally decided that I should land and fix this then try while flying so I turned back, landed, fastened the damn belt and started home. Half way I was staring at a good line of thunder clouds between me and home so instead of pushing on, I noticed Wilmington to my right a few miles away and opted to land there and wait them out. Quite the adventure that day.
