Hi Fran, Great tips for embroidery. I'm happy to say I just received my new book 3 Yard Quilts for Kids! I get so excited every time I watch one of your videos! Something I have learned to do when I satin stitch is: when I begin stitching I do a straight stitch to my starting spot, then I turn my piece back around and begin the satin stitch. This gets rid of one of the tail ends because I am now satin stitching over the top of it. Hope this makes since. Happy quilting!

Fran Thank You for such a great video on applicating. I learned a few tricks I didn't know. For instance on the blanket stitch, I didn't know that placing the needle on the outside edge of the fabric. By doing that I can make adjustments. To the outline of the pattern being appliqued. I've watched previous videos, of other RUclips channels. And they did not mention this trick. I'm so grateful that I'm watching this video today. Because now when I do my blanket stitch on my appliques. They will turn out so much nicer.

Thank you very much Fran , for this tutorial . All this time when I appliqued, I just ended the stitches on the applique, not knowing about tying them off. Doing it your way tells me I won't worry as much about fraying or unraveling. You have changed my appliques for the future. I liked that you talked this thru' so well. I was taught to do satin stitch on the full appliqué and I find it so difficult to keep a nice line of stitching around curves and points of the appliqué. I have some black noses and eyes that I’ve been procrastinating putting into some pieces animal heads. Using the blanket stitch like you showed, I’m ready to get my quilt done. Your tutorial was so helpful.

Thank you, fantastic Fran! This is perfect timing for me, because I just purchased 3 of your kits and got your new book free. I was going to start on the puppy quilt, but was hesitant about doing applique. I generally avoid applique because my brain says, "Huh?" when the directions say 'applique as desired.' This video explains the details and I thank you for it. Fran, you need your own channel because I think this is the best tuturiol your company has put out. One more thing: Do you put a small amount of Fray Check all around the applique so it definitely won't unravel?

Hi Carol! You certainly can have your machine knot the ends. From my experience, 2 things happen. The knots don't look very nice and they tend to pull out with wear. You also need to make sure there are no tails on the knots or the tails may show through your light fabric. I hope this helps. - Fran
