  • Every clinician strives for the best outcomes for their patients but local infrastructures do not always enable us to deliver this every time. We believe that all of the skills and individual roles required for the effective delivery of more integrated perioperative care already exist within the NHS. Our challenge now is to organise these individuals and skills into sustainable perioperative medicine teams.
To see what good perioperative care can look like, please watch our animated film and follow our patient ‘Doug’ along his surgical pathway.
Please use this resource to start conversations locally on the future delivery of perioperative medicine in your Trust and share local reactions and views with us. Join the conversation on what perioperative medicine should look like and how we can get there using the comments section below. Or contact us on perioperativemedicine@rcoa.ac.uk or via www.rcoa.ac.uk/perioperativemedicine.

Oh wow, at LAST, basic basic stuff and clear sensible thinking! Great (if it happens = or just an aspiration?) but WHY did it take SO long when it must have been obvious for YEARS/DECADES? And is this already in place in other countries?

I listened to the "Relaxation Recording Before Surgery" and was really loving it UNTIL I WAS JOLTED out of my meditative state by a LOUD ADVERTISEMENT...scared the heck out of me!!!! and I'm very disappointed because it was such a great guided meditation. Also, the comments are disabled for that video, hence my reason for posting my comment here.

It would be nice for Operating Department Practitioners (ODP) to be mentioned as part of the surgical care pathway especially as they are more heavily involved than the nurses when it comes to specialised care within the operating theatres. They also play a very big role and its a shame that up until today this profession is still not being recognised in the educational videos and literature.

Treating the whole patient, across integrated pathways, by engaging multi disciplinary teams, pre, intra and post surgery saves lives. Excellent. #Perioperative #TeamSurgical #TeamPatient #TeamNHS #MedLearn
