    Well, up until now the acts of rebellion against the empire were very, very small. You had the people escaping on the jedi path we saw in obi wan. And of course Dedra has been tracking down small random attacks across the galaxy that she believes are coordinated [because that’s how I would do it]. But this is the very first major attack of the rebels against the empire. It;’s obvious, and embarrassing. It makes the news, even senators are talking about it [it's all over the holo feed]. This event, well I’ll let poe say it [will be the spark that burns first order down]
    But what’s more impressive is how this show telegraphs this with the visual metaphor of lights and fire. The first shot of the episode is caf being poured into a cup by a fire. The liquid symbolizes community, and life-they share this drink together. And the fire sustains that life and keeps the people warm.
    The fire is also a metaphor for Nemik’s hope and optimism, which even he admits he’s having trouble sustaining [I thought my faith would sustain me…]. Later in the episode the al dhani light fires to welcome the celestial event of the eye. Then as things start to go badly for the group, the fire is extinguished.
    But then of course, the sky itself is lit on fire, aiding in their escape. And after Nemik dies he passes his manifesto to Klem, like passing on the torch of the rebellion. So the episode begins with a literal fire, and ends with these metaphorical embers of the rebellion being lit.
    So let’s go back to that conversation between Clem and Nemik. One thing this show does really well is to take time out of the story to just let characters talk about their feelings. This heightens the action of the episode, as we’re much more worried about what happened to characters that we actually care about.
    Nemik is the true believer of the group, the warrior pot who believes he’s serving a greater good. But he’s scared about the day, so his doubts start to creep in. He doens;t understand why he couldn;t sleep-because his faith in the cause should have comforted him. He sees this in contrast to Clem [you don;t believe in anything].
    Nemik then goe son to say he’s been writing about whether the rebellion need true believers, or if they should hire cutthroat mercenaries-should they become more like the empire. What’s happening here is that Nemik is actually questioning his own values. And Clem is happy to tell him how the empire values him. [you mean nothing to them / they don't care enough to learn].
    To underscore this, we cut to the Commandant, basically talking smack about the natives. He goes on to explain how they kepe the numbers down for the ceremony. [we build taverns, etc]. This is showing exactly how little they think of the natives and their customs. They see these people as such simple folk that they can easily be distracted with simple pleasures, and that is how they control them. This is also very similar to how the British empire controlled many of its colonies; it slowly subverted native customs, until the natives were dressing and speaking like their oppressors. [used to be 15,000, now it's 150].
    The empire is slowly weaning the al dhani off of their own culture, because this will make them easier to control. They want everyone registered under their own system, with every citizen assigned a chain code. And they’re doing this by making religious events like the eye seem antiquated and unimportant. We see this same tactic being used in the galactic senate, which I will talk about later.

    Tamaryn handed Skeen a DLT-19 blaster rifle in the vault, a gun with a high r.o.f. Yet Skeen only fired single shots. Was confusin, but upon the reveal it’s a detail done on purpose. Skeen held back to get some of the crew killed. That’s why Tamaryn died, he expected heavy cover fire from Skeen whom he had handed the weapon to ; Skeen pulls back into cover instead of shooting the moment Tamaryn is out & can’t see him. It’s also why Gorn died, instead of buying him time for cover he let him stay a sitting duck in the middle. The hint of the betrayal was there in the gun

      Thrawn is a double sided character, he most likely would sniff out Luthan for his rebellion sympathies because of the many Jedi artifacts. However, he would most likely overlook it because he holds cultural preservation, values, and beliefs above Empire politics with the exception for his love and preservation of the Chiss home world. The character flaw of Thrawn is cultural preservation, which Luthan above all people in the Star Wars universe would be able to exploit. I really hope this show highlights this as it would also set up Mandalorian in enemy character development.

    I don't know if anyone noticed the symbolism of the Imperial officers drinking the drinks in the high command center juxtaposed with Cassian stating the correct position of the rebel guns in the prior episode.
    In this episode, the 2 Imperial officers are drinking their drinks with their arms both inwards. One officer is left handed and the other officer is right handed. That means they both are positioned on the wrong side of each other for a war. But in the prior episode, Cassian told the rebels to march with their guns on the outside. It tells me the rebels are ready to get into position to fight a war and willing to make quick adjustments when needed, all while the Imperials are over confident in their complacency, or as Cassian stated, they are "fat and satisfied" in their greed and position in the universe. Not to mention the rebels are using guns which are a everyday tool, all while certain beverages can be luxury items.
    It was one of my favorite pieces of subtle symbolism in the recent episodes.

    • @jsimes1

      "fat and satisfied" is a good description of the Commandant who keeled over from a heart attack ... 😁

    • @phil3299
      @phil3299 Год назад +1

      I want to add: The rebels gun placement is in their dominant arms. Yes, the blaster is pointed inward at rest, but it will be pointed outward when fired. The rebels had no reason to fire their blasters because the disguises worked.
      Also, there was no coincidence the Imperial officers arms faced inward. The director could have positioned the officers in any arm combination he wanted. The scene was very deliberately setup as symbolism. Of course the officers are not going to shot their drinks like a gun... and yet both officers died later in the episode to make my symbolic point true. Not to mention it's great foreshadowing.

    You gotta love the scales of magnitude of the new Star Wars. In space, against KX9 laser cannons, a TIE fighter explodes in 2 overcharged hits. But it's still more than a match for anyone on the ground. AT-ST was the same way in the Toho story of Mandalorian; a nuisance, when you have the right equipment.

Peace to those who come in peace.">"Tell him our ghosts have strong hands and long memories." - (not subtitled but subtle) - "He says, May the eye find the good in all of us" - and then there is the look followed by the stare. Not sure what the imperials we’re playing, but I am fairly certain it was not sabacc. The hand names were not consistent with previously established sabacc names. Also, sabacc cards are either rectangular or longer hexagons than the Catan-like cards they were putting down.

    • @RichardGQue
      @RichardGQue Год назад +1

      I'm glad to see I'm not the first to point that out. I was thrilled to see a new game other than Sabacc and Dejarik. It definitely has a more domino vibe. if you take a close look the metal hexes have different sets of red pips on them just like dominos. and the players align their pieces with the red pips matching. Each player says something different when they play a piece, the first two sound like "hexba" and "hexa". the 3rd player seems to play the best hex as everyone else is frustrated by it. I can't make out what he's saying through the accent, something like "hoxola", it's clearly a third word announcing a better play. they also just Anted up moments before someone seems to have a lead, so it's clearly a shorter game than our earth dominos. after rewatching it, I'm also noticing that there are two kinds of pips, red pips, and open holes.
      whatever the game is it's very different from any of the various rules of Sabacc we've seen. or even pazaak from Kotor.

    I appreciate the grey area Andor exists in, the heroes have a sacrificial quality because they are choosing to serve a cause. Unlike trained soldiers, most are just regular folks who had their fill. The story demonstrates the patriotism of the common man against the scheming maneuvers of those who serve the oppressors. Good Video! PS: Doug needs to sign off too, if anyone deserves that perk it should be the manager.

When the crew are posing as imperial soldiers, they are pointing their blasters to the side AT each other as they march! Intrestingly the treatment of the natives on the planet is very closinly related to the treatment of the Scots by the British during the highland clearences of the 1750s onwards, where natives were evicted from land on mass to make way for farming. 30% of Scots used to live in the highlands, today its less than 8%. This planet was also filmed in Scotland and the highland clearences were referenced directly by name in the last episode. Pretty cool link.

      Having been brought up in the Highlands of Scotland, I thought the exact same thing! Small-holding farmers (crofters as we call them) being evicted to clear the land and many forced to move to industrial lowland cities like Glasgow and Edinburgh to work in factories. I thought it was quite appropriate to use this tragic part of Scotland's history as a parallel history for the planet which was being filmed there. Also feels like "The Eye" might be loosely based on the Northern Lights, which can often be seen from the Scottish Highlands.😍
