love the new look of the room and found the video helpful. would love to see maybe a series of videos of how to set up a guitar properly like fret levelling, intonation, action, etc
I've been wanting to invest in some wood working tools to make my own guitars, and watching these videos gives me just that much more little bit of confidence and drive, so thank you so much for doing what you do
Thanks a lot for your videos Collin, they are super helpful! I bought a 3/4 scale Jackson Dinky and used this video to educate me on how to change out the tuners.
Colin, I love your videos and I believe you are what truly inspired me to begin fixing up guitars. By that, I mean I want to start fixing up guitars lol I would love to see a video all about you and how exactly you started working on guitars, playing the guitar, ect. anyway, love this vid
please do a pick up change video in detail. i dont know why, but i learn better from your channel and cant seem to understand why my soldering never works. thanks and super cool video.
It would be awesome if you had a series based on guitar mods alone like replacing different tuners like in this video as well as pickups, bridges, etc. Might be a great direction to take and focus on for a bit!
I have those on my schecter and they are really smooth, but grover also makes locking ones and they aren't that much expensive then the regular ones, something to look into
Hey Colin, When will you make video about that string clip you have above your nut? Love your videos, wish you could upload more often! We need more guitar upgrade/hack videos! Cheers from Poland!
Please continue this series! Very helpful. Would love to learn more about guitar teching but don't know where to find resources. An interesting video would be "resetting a Floyd Rose bridge", since I know so many people who either just block them or take them to the shop to have them re-set up. Thanks!
Loving the new studio! Also thanks for the helpful video. I tried changing my Epiphone SG tuners a little while back but was having issues with the screws not going in all the way and it just wasn't working so I just sent it up to get it done haha looks like I might not need to anymore ;)
Maybe you could also take that idea a bit further and do another video on setting up a fully floating trem. I've seen various videos on that topic but none of them are particularly good or succinct.
Chris McCartney well, i have, i've built a few guitars myself and repaired a lot of them, rebuilt a large shed, put together a bunch of furniture, and various other things. for light work like Colin demonstrates here, hand drills are definitely more practical, they have more control and don't require batteries that, from my experience, always seem flat when you go to use the damn thing. heavy work is a different beast, but anything that only requires hand tools should have a hand drill.
I tried this on an acoustic but I stripped the screw head of the Phillips screw in the guitar as the screws weren't the same as a regular cross head screw driver it was a slightly smaller one. I use this one every time I tinker with a guitar now to avoid doing it again.
Hello, thank you for the video, I'm looking to upgrade my very old Jackson Dinky DX10D guitar from factory machine heads to Grover ones as part of an upgrading project to motivate me back into playing as I haven't played neither this guitar or any other one in 15 years ... I DO have some questions if you don't mind me asking: * Where did you buy the tuners? Online? I don't think where I live they would have the grover ones in stock to go and actually check if they fit my guitar * How did you cover the old holes? * How do you set the orientation? When you said "align them straight" you must have some reference, my guitar has a reversed jackson headstock
Colin, is there a brand of filler that works best for guitars.. or will any filler do? I upgraded the tuners on my favorite guitar recently and the holes from the old tuners screws really bum me out..
+Surej R the shirt was part of the kickstarter reward I chose when preordering the device. I'm not sure if they are selling the t-shirts now, but it would be best to contact them and find out.
Cool room! You stated a lot of the - more or less - obvious, but I don't even mind that... Why was there nothing about fitting tuners with a smaller diameter than what was originally in the guitar? I'd assume it is possible to do so.
Hi Man, I need your help, I have a Ibanez AS73 TBC and I want to replace the stock tuner to GROVERS. are they the same hole dimension? your help would be appreciated. thank you very much!
Hey mate, my ESP Ltd Ec-500 has grover tuner much like the ones in this video and I want to change the to the Grover keystone tuner(the all chrome ones). Do you think they'll be a direct fit?
My first time changing out machine heads. What of the letters and numbers stamped on the back of the Grover’s? Namely, “PW 1, and PW 2, 2 PW, 1 PW”? There’s no PW 3. What do these pertain to?
is it worth trying to fix a tuning post? one of the tuners on my bass is missing a little white "separator" ring (the rest of the tuner is black, perhaps you've seen them and know what I mean?). it seems like it might be easier to just buy new ones, but the wallet says fix it!
are most of the acoustic guitars mid size? I want to replace my acoustic guitar with new tuners because the gears are messed up and idk if its mid-size
Would locking tuners provide any real advantage on a hard tail LP style guitar? I'm looking to replace my tuners, and I'm thinking Grovers, but not sure if I should go locking or not.
If the screw holes are in the same place then screw the new screws into the existing holes. Never glue parts on to your guitar, you might need to take them back off again.
Because I already had these tuners sitting doing nothing. It didn't make sense to spend money on another set for the sake of 6 tiny holes on a cheap instrument. Also, fantastic learning opportunity for the viewing audience who may not be aware that tuning machines come with many different mounting hole placements.
I realize that you may have had those tuners but having a bunch of holes in your guitar is not a good idea. I would have bought new one to fit , well I guess it’s not a Gibson so it’s ok!
he collin, why would you upgrade, other than one might be broken or aesthetics,if it tunes/turns it does the job just fine, the most people dont know about ratios ,so they "think" this upgrade is "better" because it is a (unnecessary) upgrade ,just my opinion ,love the videos greetings from holland
+Leon Meertens cheap tuners often slip, they may not have a gearing ratio accurate enough for precise tuning, and they are more likely to fail over a lifetime of use. Security, stability, and accuracy should be reason enough.
upgrade normally means go to a newer and better tuner.... 8mm covered gear tuners on cheaper guitars are NOT good tuners... and they have 8mm holes in the headstock. Now you have 2 problems. Get decent 10mm tuners and an RC airplane propeller reamer for $15 to make the rear of the headstock holes 10mm vs. 8mm and about 9-10 mm deep. A drill press is a neat and square/true way to do it best.
a badly cut nut will cause more problems than not having premium tuning machines It's a myth tuners DO NOT SLIP. if you know how tuners work then you know it's literally impossible for a machine to slip back.
I'm suggesting a badly cut nut is more problematic than a functioning tuner. The mechanism cannot backwind without human assistance unless the gears are broken. I'm not saying there are shit tuners as good as top end grovers or klusons but most guitars now usually have decent tuners that don't slip if the guitar nut is cut right. example i recently bought some Gibson tuners for my epiphone guess what. They weren't even as good as the stock epiphone kluson repros it came with. infact they were shockingly shite. They would probably keep tune though.
your videos are literally the best out there homie
Thank you :)
Robert Baker Hi Robert
You guys need to colab!!!
Completely agree. He's a top guy. I learn so much from these videos. Kudos.
love the new look of the room and found the video helpful. would love to see maybe a series of videos of how to set up a guitar properly like fret levelling, intonation, action, etc
All that and more on the way.
I'm digging the remodeled room!
I've been wanting to invest in some wood working tools to make my own guitars, and watching these videos gives me just that much more little bit of confidence and drive, so thank you so much for doing what you do
the quality of your video has gone up exponentially and I love it!!! great work and keep it up!!
Everyone should learn to maintain and customise their instruments good work Colin.
On of the best guitar channels in youtube!
After years of that same background, a new room looks so refreshing! It's nice as well!
thanks dude, I got a super good deal on a vintage yamaha eg cuz the guy was doing a project and all it needs is tuners.
Every question I have about guitar maintenance leads me to one of your videos I don't know why I didn't sub until now. Thanks dude
SUPER-clear video and so much information. Brilliant stuff!
This was a huge help as I want to upgrade the tuning machines on my guitar. Thanks and keep it loud!
these particular heads work great, my favorite guitar already had them, and I noticed a great difference between my other guitars.
Excellent video on upgrading tuners. I had many questions and your video answered them all. Well done!
Thanks a lot for your videos Collin, they are super helpful! I bought a 3/4 scale Jackson Dinky and used this video to educate me on how to change out the tuners.
the reverb in your video plus the reverb in my room with hardwood floors makes it sound like you're going through a PA at a festival
Your videos have improved so much! So good to see a small youtuber a year ago become a much bigger youtuber :p
You should do something like a podcast. Maybe even on another person's show just talking about what you do. I love when youtubers do that
Locking tuners on EVERYTHING!!!
Yes! Any guitar I buy gets upgraded to locking tuners.
meh... split shaft is best, then locking.
sweet new studio Colin.
Simple but very essential information. Well explained as well. Good job!
Great information. I hope to see more of these videos.
Another great video Colin.
Colin, I love your videos and I believe you are what truly inspired me to begin fixing up guitars. By that, I mean I want to start fixing up guitars lol
I would love to see a video all about you and how exactly you started working on guitars, playing the guitar, ect.
anyway, love this vid
Super detailed. Thanks so much!
Very smart thank you for this quick video
😃
damn, love the room treating colin
please do a pick up change video in detail. i dont know why, but i learn better from your channel and cant seem to understand why my soldering never works. thanks and super cool video.
This is exactly what I was looking for, thanks !

I'd love to see a video of this quality about setting up action and how/when/why to loosen or tighten the thruss rod :)
Just as well I've still to put new strings on this guitar. All of this is coming.
Maybe you could also take that idea a bit further and do another video on setting up a fully floating trem. I've seen various videos on that topic but none of them are particularly good or succinct.
hand drills are superior! so quiet, so satisfying.
Clearly you have never worked in a field that requires drilling.
Chris McCartney

great video brother! Thanks
Happy to see that Macaulay Kulkin is doing great and I'm quite surprised that he's into guitar thingy now 👍🤘
a video on rewiring a pickup from 2 to 4 conductor would be really interesting! i'd be scared to attempt it still, but i love learning!
waaaayy back in 2011 I made a video which pretty much covers this.
Could do with a remake though: ruclips.net/video/7i7hBO59SR4/видео.html
cheers colin :)
Super useful video!
Great explanation, thank you!
The room is sooo classy :D
Colin, do a room tour pls ☺️ need to come see the new place!
You are more than welcome to come over any time
New room? Looking fresh mate
Been wanting to do this with my SG Epiphone
Thank you sir
Bit of a specialist video, but I'd love to see a tutorial for installing an S1 switch and wiring it up!
Thanks found a "peal" guitar in the trash and figured it might be fun to replace everything on it and keep it if it turns out ok.
really useful, cheers
STUDIO TOUR!!! PLEASEE !!! :) :) :)
Just unsubscribed to subscribe again. Which means I WANT MORE OF MODIFYING STUFF! Oh I loved the new studio by the way.
Thanks a lot!!!
Grreat video. Thx man! What happens if you locate tuners upside down? Besides relentless mocking?
please could u do a vid of splitting humbuckers from a HSH setup please!!
I tried this on an acoustic but I stripped the screw head of the Phillips screw in the guitar as the screws weren't the same as a regular cross head screw driver it was a slightly smaller one. I use this one every time I tinker with a guitar now to avoid doing it again.

Can you make an video on upgrading an Floyd Rose style bridge ?

Rewatching this and noticed the Metronome by Soundbrenner shirt. Where can I get one from?
+Surej R the shirt was part of the kickstarter reward I chose when preordering the device. I'm not sure if they are selling the t-shirts now, but it would be best to contact them and find out.
CSGuitars Thank you very much for the reply. And yeah, they don't sell them out anymore. I just really like their product.
Cool room!
You stated a lot of the - more or less - obvious, but I don't even mind that...

Hi Man, I need your help, I have a Ibanez AS73 TBC and I want to replace the stock tuner to GROVERS. are they the same hole dimension? your help would be appreciated. thank you very much!
What's the name of your band?
Where is the Does It Shred series???
how tight do you tighten the screws? How much torque?
I have a question, when you put them on is it ok to make then at a certain angle? Like facing them outwards or inwards like a Warwick bass? Or no
Whats that thingy you use to mute the strings behind the nut mate?
Hey mate, my ESP Ltd Ec-500 has grover tuner much like the ones in this video and I want to change the to the Grover keystone tuner(the all chrome ones). Do you think they'll be a direct fit?
Closest thing to this I want to do with my current guitar is get new pickups installed on my esp ltd fx guitar.
passives? is that an emg equiped one? yep you will need to drill a hole for the new ground wire
I need some serious help, I broke the hex nut that goes on top of the tuner, down inside the peg...is there anyway to get it back out?
When is "will it sherd" coming back?
can locking tuners be an alternative to a locking nut and it work just as effectively?
My first time changing out machine heads. What of the letters and numbers stamped on the back of the Grover’s? Namely, “PW 1, and PW 2, 2 PW, 1 PW”? There’s no PW 3. What do these pertain to?
is it worth trying to fix a tuning post? one of the tuners on my bass is missing a little white "separator" ring (the rest of the tuner is black, perhaps you've seen them and know what I mean?). it seems like it might be easier to just buy new ones, but the wallet says fix it!
I need some help! There are so many tuners out the and I dont know which ones to get. How do I decide which tuner are appropriate for my guitar?
I have a question, if I upgrade the tuning machines do I have to them reset the intonation?
Does this guitar have active pickups if so how do they sound ?
Can you continue the "will it shred" ? :)
What about the old holes?
are most of the acoustic guitars mid size? I want to replace my acoustic guitar with new tuners because the gears are messed up and idk if its mid-size
Do they need to all be pointing in the same direction like yours or can they be angled?
is acoustic pegs and electric pegs the same?
Would locking tuners provide any real advantage on a hard tail LP style guitar? I'm looking to replace my tuners, and I'm thinking Grovers, but not sure if I should go locking or not.
Thanks for the info. I'm planning to get some locking tuners and replace my nut.
But you can get both types of Grover with straight in line screw and offset. Just buy the right ones. You didn't need to drill them
Is there a compressor on your voiceover?
I have a question...what do you do if the screw holes are in the same exact place? Would you use glue? Does anyone know?
If the screw holes are in the same place then screw the new screws into the existing holes.
Never glue parts on to your guitar, you might need to take them back off again.
My tuners feel like trying to turn a lugnut with my fingers... should I replace them? It’s an old guitar
Best couple tuner brands for tuning stability?
Grover, Tone Pros, Kahler, Schaller, and companies have their own locking tuners like Fender and Gibson.
TehArmoredButcher Sperzel, Grover, Shaller
hi im new to the channel im just wondering if this guy has a band
Why not just get the grover tuners that fit the hole keeping you from drilling new holes?
Because I already had these tuners sitting doing nothing. It didn't make sense to spend money on another set for the sake of 6 tiny holes on a cheap instrument.
Also, fantastic learning opportunity for the viewing audience who may not be aware that tuning machines come with many different mounting hole placements.
I realize that you may have had those tuners but having a bunch of holes in your guitar is not a good idea. I would have bought new one to fit , well I guess it’s not a Gibson so it’s ok!
Why not a socket wrench?
Some socket wrenches aren't deep enough to accommodate the posts of the tuning machines.
Yea but will it shred?
you just saved me 75 bucks
I cannibalised a £99 Peavey guitar for parts, the machine heads from that are more stable than my grovers aha
I use 2 Tuners per string.
twice as stable, boys!
he collin, why would you upgrade, other than one might be broken or aesthetics,if it tunes/turns it does the job just fine, the most people dont know about ratios ,so they "think" this upgrade is "better" because it is a (unnecessary) upgrade ,just my opinion ,love the videos greetings from holland

Changing machine heads is hardly ever necessary. Almost all tuning issues result from a bad setup, namely a poorly filed nut.
David Hoch Still useful if you want to know how to change to locked tuners for example.
Locking tuners still help, and some people also just like getting finer ratio tuners.
oh my god. the guitar is made in china
a badly cut nut will cause more problems than not having premium tuning machines
It's a myth tuners DO NOT SLIP. if you know how tuners work then you know it's literally impossible for a machine to slip back.
Are you seriously suggesting that backlash in gears isn't an issue for tuning machines?
