I want to have Klobie as my best friend. She is so inspirational.
I want to be best friends with both Kolbie and Kristy! 😬
This is such an important conversation. “Art is about the creator, not the about the creation. The whole point of creativity is so that you can feel something.” It’s something I’ve just started discovering for myself recently and it m so happy to hear the wisdom that’s being discussed here. Thanks so much for doing this!
"Courage over perfection" I needed to hear that! I wrote it down, and will make that a mantra for myself! Great interview and I look forward to Part 2.
Sounds good!
Fantastic interview! You both hit home for sure. Fear....yep. sounds about right.
Thank you ladies for a great conversation.
I’m 73 and enjoying the creative challenge of watercolor. Have enjoyed the conversation between you two ladies.
I felt like I was listening to Dharma teachers. Be present. Find joy. Love yourself. Break free from the chains. LOVED THIS!!!
I’m going to save this video to show my grandkids because this subject can pertain to anything not just art. Thank you ladies for doing this video because y’all are definitely hitting the nail on the head. Y’all are right about us not thinking we are good enough.
This is so spot on. Thank you so much. It wasn't until other people told me I was an artist, that I started to embrace it. That is sad. I use to say, "I'm not an artist, I just like to draw, paint, etc." And they would say, "Are you serious, I love your stuff." We really don't need other people to validate us. Once you learn that, you can flourish to whatever level you decide to take it to.
This “perfectionism” resonates with me. Building courage takes practise! Thanks for this reminder.
Love these stories. The pilgrim's journey. Doesn't matter the subject. ❤ Thank you ❤
Ohh wow this was such a wonderful fun time. I’m so glad that you’ve interviewed Kolbie Blume! 2 of my favorites getting together to teach & inspire me! Thanks for sharing this video with us. I can’t wait to see part 2. Hope you’re enjoying & having a wonderful week!
All of the artists we studied in school moved from thing to thing: Van Gogh had still life’s and portraits and sunflowers and landscapes and haystacks and self portraits. We all move from interest to interest, changing techniques and even mediums as we go.
How lucky you are to find your creativity so young! I’m 72 and just starting to enjoy this watercolor art form.
Every day with watercolor is a gift now :)
Thankyou ladies for your wisdom and encouragement. I am an artist ( not professional) and a quilter. I teach quilting and there is a term I use for different approaches, “ are you a process quilter or a project quilter”. There are quilters who do ‘quilt in a day’ not my style as I’m all about the process, I love the designing the playing with colour the stitching etc but to get to the art. In this conversation you hit on something so important, it’s about the joy of the process. I have been criticised by art teaches for painting too realistic and with too much detail. Now while I love to see paint flow and mingle and do all sorts of wonderful things my JOY comes from getting in there with detail. Thank you ladies for voicing your approval of doing art whatever way brings you joy. Only now in my 70’s do I feel confident enough to say I’m doing it ‘my way’ ❤
I am soooo late to this watercolour party, or even exploring being arty in general. But am I glad I finally made it! I am obsessed with how you approach teaching watercolour art, the mindset about creativity and the acknowledgement of artistic wounds and how often we ourselves are our biggest hindrance. I'm bloody 41 and I'm only just realising that I can do so much more than I ever thought I could or should. I am investing in the good supplies and I am struggling with letting myself use the good supplies. I often find myself thinking "I'll use up the lower quality stuff first AND THEN I am allowed to use the good stuff". No! I paid for the good stuff, I use it when ever the fluff I feel like using it! I need to make a big sign of all the things I need to remind myself and hang it on the wall above my desk.
You are taking up space in my heart where supportive parents should've been. And I am so grateful for it. I'm grateful for the conversations you are having on your channel, I am grateful for the things you teach and how you teach them. My Billy is being taken over by art supplies and Kristy Rice books and I'm not mad.
Oh my goodness! What a wonderful discussion. When you started talking about the reluctance to use the ‘good’ paper I just started laughing. Nailed me! I’ve been hoarding the good stuff for when I’m good enough. The wanting to be perfect has reared it’s ugly head. Thank you so much for making me realize I’m not creating for the Louvre. I can paint what inspires me for me.
😘😘
Therapy for artists 🎨. Love that you help not only with the techniques and products. You also help with the art process, creative permission, rule breaking 😊 always one of my favorite things. For sharing your insecurities with everyone because we all have them. One of the best Therapy sessions I have had. Thank you. You are both art angels 😇 you help so many.
Thank you so much for your kind words!
I love how you said that we are prepared to spend money on paint and brushes etc, but only want to get the good paper when…… Wow! That is so freeing because that is exactly how I have thought. Thanks you for sharing these nuggets.
Thank you both for having the discussion UP Front on the scarcity- stressors.
I grew up in significant poverty, so I have a lifelong pass to that mindset. Having the resources to be choosy *now* makes me think carefully about paper.
Kristi, I have a bargain-sketchbook that I adore ($6 from Michael’s, 9x12 or so). Mainly I love it because it was the first bigger sketchbook I Ever filled. When I say the paper is unsuitable, it doesn’t even take a number two pencil very well 😆 great at ball point pen tho!
One thing it taught me-I can paint out a concept on The Worlds LEAST SUITABLE PAPER. And as quirky and as bad as the paint behaves, I realized I can learn papers the way I learn paints. And once you learn papers…. By adjusting your goals or work style, to the limitations of your available paper, you can paint with watercolor on any paper.
When you don’t know your papers limitations of course it will fight you. But by chucking paint at page after page, you can learn what that sketchbook will do in your hands, to help you. I know get so interested in using up my remaining unsuitable paper sketchbooks because I do see them help me release creativity.
Paper is *the* limiting factor: there are skills you cannot learn on bad paper. So when your budget expands, I always recommend leveling up on paper quality so you can continue growing. But really cheap hardbound sketchbooks can still be a thing of joy.
So good to hear again I'm not the only one in need of self-compassion!
Ugh cliffhanger! I’m about to start a chant in the comments! PART TWO, PART TWO! 😂
Seriously, this is wonderful! So much goodness and so inspiring!! I can’t wait to watch the rest! Also heading over to add kolbie on all the things! ❤ thank y’all for the conversation!
Yes… I had to re-watch the end as I was painting and thought I’d missed the ending, or interrupted the video somehow ❤️
Our "thing" seems to grow layer by layer. And it comes with exercising our courage!
I love that you said do what makes the wonder of joy sing in your heart!
Yes! Thank you!
This conversation is more valuable to me than any course I’ve taken, any workshop I’ve attended, and any techniques I have learned throughout my years as an artist. This conversation hit the core of my creative soul. I really needed to hear this. Thank you for sharing.
THANK YOU KRISTI and KOLBE. I've been painting for a couple of years now and keep trying to find my style. This morning I was playing with color mixing and found just putting the paint on paper makes me feel good. Your conversation gave me a generous helping of food for thought.
I’m so glad
This is the most profound… The most excellent… Most uplifting… And so many many many many many more words that I can’t think of that mean fantastic, wonderful, brilliant, and thank you! You two are peas in a pod and Kolbie, I have just met a new mentor in you !!! :-) Kristie, you have been my brand new mentor for about three weeks and I am now becoming so excited about the future of my life at 70 years old!! Thank you thank you thank you
Wonderful!
Ladies this was great! Kolbie, indeed “what’s stopping you?” is one of the most important questions. I recently started painting, but I ‘m very creative in other areas, like writing. So I was never afraid to create while writing, so it doesn’t make sense to be afraid to create with paint, but I went through all the phases of “self-stopping”. Thank you for being an inspiration!
Ah self stopping very poignant
I think y'all should write a book together that not only highlights painting but all this wonderful advice, inspiration, and quotes! You both connect so well. And that connection passes to us! Thank you for all you both do!
:)
What a lovely interview... love the thoughts presented here... I am onto expensive paper and buying professional supplies... yay
Ladies, I am so thankful for your conversation! What a breath of fresh air. So many great epiphanies into self love on the journey of creating joy and healing the soul, aside from the water color. I needed this today. Much love and gratitude! 😘🥳😜😃
Ladies, thank you so much. This video conversation hits home 100%.
Dear Kolbie, your WISE sayings really made my day!!! My experience at school, in most subjects, is that it took the joy away of learning and trusting yourself!! After this video I'm going to TRUST myself in whatever I'm doing, especially painting!!! Thank you so much!
Yes, yes, yes. I started off as a pet portrait artist with acrylics and my website was driven by that. 12 months on, I’m into watercolours now and haven’t painted a pet portrait for months. I’ve pulled down my website now because it felt overwhelming and stifling.
Go with that gut!!
Wonderful..Thank you. I just left 21 years of pre-k teaching. This was my life, after my family. Now I want watercolor to be my next love.Except that I can't draw a straight line. Thank you again..
Sounds good. Watercolor is like anti-straight line!! Welcome!!
What a FABULOUS interview, and perfect timing for me! Thank you.
So glad you enjoyed :)
WOW,WOW,WOW, This was a wonderful interview filled with great messages and inspiration. Not only in art but life in general. It’s all about filling your heart with what brings you joy and that will shine to others!
Dear ladies! A remarkable conversation that needs to be heard and proclaimed to so many! Such wonderful encouragement! P.S. Kolbie, I own your landscape book, and had no idea of this conversation to come! Thank you for sharing your methodology, your philosophy of art, and your enthusiasm!
Oh Donna thanks for the kind worlds!!
Not even 7 min in and Kolbie sounds like a recording in my head. Every single word!
Watching this calmed my soul. Thank you!
Oh my gosh! Such a real discussion with so much value! Thank you for sharing!
You are so welcome!
Finding your style is like finding what you're going to be when you grow up! That "end goal", expectation gotta go!
I really needed to hear a positive conversation today... Great video!
Kristy this video is smokin !!!! 🔥
It's so unapologetically transparent and authentic. Ha 😄
Y'all hit on some laser sharp 👀 moments and thoughts on the journey. Such Synergy. Kobie has a new sub and traveler on the path of self-discovery !
Wow thank you!! XO
thank you two sooo much! I will stand in my mess and love it. This channel is about so much more than painting
Yesss!!! Own that mess!
I had so many YES, ME TOO moments watching this!! THANKYOU, Thank you, Thank you 💗💗 and please Kristy and Kolbie continue doing what you're doing as it is so valued xx
We will!
I've been a perfectionist with many things in my life but especially when it comes to my sculpture. I'm still learning to let go and following Kristy to learn watercolor is one of the areas I've been able to have fun. This talk has been so inspiring for me. Thank You Very Much!!!
Thank you for this definition of creativity. I have to keep reminding myself to relax & feel the joy of watercolor
After I watched this video I took a day to digest the information and then I came back. I watched it a second time so I could write down the parts that needed a 🎼choir🎤 to punctuate them.
Harness your weird and use the good paper! 👩🏻🎨👨🏼🎨🧑🏽🎨
Oh wow! Love!
Just found this video from other Kristy Rice videos! Started watercolors 3 weeks ago. I realized that the 2 books I checked out at the local library are Kolbie's! Love this interview. I've painted (hobby) with acrylics for 40+ years, but I love watercolors. I need to 'unlearn what I have learned'!
Wow, this conversation is what I really need to hear over and over again. Thank you so much.
Love this discussion. It is jam-packed with hard won wisdom and genuine discovery. Thank you.
Love this!, Maud Lewis is another wonderful example of painting on anything. This a really great conversation. Thank you both so very much.
Oh my goodness soooo many things I’ve needed to hear how fantastic you both are THANK YOU 💜💜💜
Thank you
If we all followed all the rules and techniques of those that went before us we would never have those that are in front of us now such as you and Kolbie. A great lesson in becoming your own artist.
I love this conversation ❤
This is SO Good!
OMG, WOW! This conversation was so validating, so inspiring so point on. I found out I am a very couragous painter. That demeaning , nagging loud voice in my head has nothing on me anymore, Do I still get discouraged ? Yep, but I just keep going.I struggle but enjoy the journey so much that I actually got out pen and paper and wrote how I was feeling and my experience doing my art work. What an affermation to me.! I have done some of my best work on paper bags, slate and the back of wall covering. It took me 2 years to use my Arch's paper and the first attempt was horrifying, you would have thought I had not learned anything, Kate needed to learn consistacy of water and pigment. I could ramble forever but you guys touched on so much and have left me so excited ! Pardon my spelling , Love you both this was the bomb !
Love this conversation between two of my favorites! I will rewatch many times, sooo much inspiration! I have both Kristy’s and Kolbie’s books and find them very inspiring and informative. You two should collaborate on a local (PA or MD) in-person workshop or retreat! That would be a blast!
I love this show. You all are changing my mindset. I want to paint. I’m going to go get some supplies TODAY and I am GOING TO PAINT!! Thank you both!!
Best conversation ever!!! Tyw
I love this!! It feels good to meet another artist who deals with the same fears & perfectionism that I do. I loved when Kolbe shared her need for validation& how she has overcame it. That has been an issue for me as well...
Thank you!!!🤓
Yes!!🎉
This is such an incredible conversation. It makes me really emotional and gives me a lot of hope that I can let go of my self-expectations. Thank you so much for posting!!
My favorite line- Its not about the creation it’s about the creator. Love love love.
So good
Loved. It. So. Much. I was sitting there nodding through the whole thing like one of those wobbly headed dolls. Basically, just WORD. One thing worth singling out, though. As a parent of an adult, I can confirm that you never feel qualified. Never. Those who would tell you otherwise, are either lying or are not from this planet. As a matter of fact, the older they get, the less qualified you feel. I felt the most qualified when I had a newborn. And you can guess how qualified I felt.
Thanks for sharing :)
Thank you ladies!!!! I am 1 week into this. I have always told myself I could not even draw a stick figure….then I stumbled on watercolor basics on You Tube and I was in heaven. But, just last night I’m practicing and mine looks off and I’m mumbling that I cannot do this cause it’s not perfect. This morning I say to myself I want to do this and your conversation popped in and after watching I knew this was a God moment!!!! Thank you ladies for encouraging me….I took notes to keep me encouraged. Thank You….thank you!!!
Excellent info! I saw Part 2 first. It's me being a rebel! 🤣 I'd love to get Kolbie's book!
Love it!!
Love BOTH of you😊
I’m keeping this video to watch a second, third time! Just what I needed to hear, I am able to create my joy! Thank your both for speaking your truths, I want to keep creating!🙋♀️🙏Karen Dirmish
You are welcome!
This was so great to watch! So much gold.
Watched this from Scotland 🏴👍
Sooo many amazing tips and very useful mental health advice. I have ADHD too, Kolbie, my neurodiverse sister 💗👍
Thank you both for this awesome video!! I really needed to hear all of this because I'm really hard on myself. You both have brought me so much to think about when I paint! I love water painting and will never give up!!! ❤️❤️
Awesome interview
I agree with everything you all said, such an important conversation 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
You two are a hoot!
The laughter & joy is just what we needed
This is one (actually a pair of) smart Ladies!!!
😘😘😘
This is such a game changer conversation for me! Thank you both! I needed this!❣️
Oh my gosh!! I so needed this!! I enjoy painting along with tutorials with my own spin. But I want to paint my friend's Cane Corso and I'm absolutely frozen! Afraid to even start.
This has been so helpful. I am feeling so much better about my journey.
Lord i love this. Have been so scared to try watercolors...now I will begin the fun journey....thank you kolbie
Thank you love the conversation. 😁
You bet!
I love you both! ❤️
I watch you both for the last few years! And NOW- - -
I think you’re both GREAT - Together!
Art is therapy. Your encouragement matters and makes a difference. Thank you both.
I appreciate your words so much
Oh, wow, its so wonderful to hear that other people have that same little person talking in their heads! It's been a constant battle in every part of my life. You both are amazing.
You are in good company :)
This is so helpful for me right now! Thank you!
I'm so glad!
100% needed this. Thank you ladies!
thank u so much for this inspiring time with both of u. It is soooo helpful .
You are very welcome!
I’ve really enjoyed this interview, I was an art student in the 1980s, and until around 3 years ago I refused to have anything to do with watercolour. My lecturer made it seem so difficult and was extremely critical of any mistakes. From leaving Art College in 1987, I didn’t even pick a pencil up until around 2013, when I was forced to do something. My back seized up and I was off my feet for 6 weeks so I sent my husband to but a desktop easel and art supplies.
I lay flat with the easel on my stomach and went on from there. Now I’m obsessed, more than as a teenager, and recently found your channel after finding a Kirby Rosanes book and I’m working my way through this, plus the other 3 I have, and my colouring book collection is expanding with different artists.
I’m now 53 yrs old, but believe it’s never too late to pick new skills up and work at them to expand your creativity. I went back to university at 37 yrs old for my photography degree, felt like an old lady, but loved every minute of it.
I’m not in good health, I live with chronic pain every single day, and my frustrations really show when my hands hurt so much I can’t draw or paint because holding a brush or pencil hurts so much. I don’t sleep more than 2 to 3 hrs a night, but if I find I can have a good day of whatever art I choose for the day, then I do sometimes sleep deeper and feel more rested too. I’m obviously so relaxed it helps.
I think the text you highlight makes a big impact to show people everything is possible, you just need to kickstart yourself and your mind, then your heart will follow.
I love your channel, thank you for sharing your knowledge and skills.
I’m in the cold wet U.K. and I don’t go out much through wintertime, so I’ve plenty to keep me busy, watching and learning new skills.
I’ve got to admit that I was a bit of a snob over 😊coloured pencils, not believing you could create anything except pale, washed out colourings, how wrong I was. I’m LOVING what they can do.
I’ve just had a big rev up and am going to get the paper I’ve been saving under the bed to do some BIG MESSES tomorrow.!!! 😂
Mental health, whew! I’m bipolar. Art keeps me sane. Yet, perfectionism prevents me from putting brush to paper when I’m depressed. This video is GOLD!
Thanks so much for saying that some things do come from a place of privilege. Because for some of us Canson XL ís the fancy paper
Hi Kristy! What a great video! You both are so inspirational! I am scheduled to teach an art session for a yoga retreat. I vacillate between excited and terrified. I doubt if anyone signed up for this retreat thinking they were going to “do art”. I have no idea how it will be received. However, after getting past feeling like a complete fake, I’m committed to having fun (have to keep reminding myself of that) and hopefully this session will prove to be a fun for at least some. Thanks for both of your remarks about feeling qualified and enjoying the moment! and PS, using the good paper…took me about 4 years to get to that!
So much inspiration here!! Thank you both!
Dear Kristy. One of the things, apart from your immense talent, is that it's also enjoyable for us (yes the viewer) when you compliment yourself!!!! When you lay paint down and you're excited about it, I just run to my paint!!! Thank you!!!!!!!
I've learned so much from you!
It’s not the arrow, it’s the archer. 💕 Great conversation!
Omg! Thank you for sharing this and introducing me to yet another beautiful artist! I love how you both incorporate your art, your creativity, with positive self talk/image. Helping others through blocks, negative self talk, doubt is a wonderful message! I try to help reach people with my cards, and appreciate the way you 2 do also. Thank you!!
There is no "should" and only I would like to... That is something I learned some time ago from my therapist. Taking that expectation away from all that I do will get me the joy and peace I require in life. I try very hard to remind myself of this daily. Bless you both for your words of encouragement. So good!!
I'm 76 and I struggle with, I don't have enough time to get ....somewhere......! Where? I have been painting 15 yrs. I love my work, but this and of course the high priced supplies I struggle with! I just ordered some professional paint. Now to level up brushes and paper!
Wahoo!!
I don’t usually comment, but this was so good that I took notes! I can’t wait for part 2!! Thank you for introducing me to Kolby Bloom! I really love this series! I love your art, personality, and teaching style Kristy and I’m excited to be introduced to other artists! Thank you!💗
Wow, so many "take aways" from this vid. One of my biggest struggles for sure. I would love for someone to recognize my work... like someone does a Georgia O'Keefe. But I need that "style" first lol. I'm still a newbie going through boot camp:)
Using the GOOD STUFF WHEN...... My mother always was a " save it for good" type of thinker....I USE the dishes, the linens.... AND THE FRIGGIN EXPENSIVE PAPER SOMETIMES!
Yessss! I use my milk glass collection for everyday awesomeness! Just one example of using the good stuff always! We’re worth it!
