  • Bangladeshis feel "an antipathy" for India & they hold it "squarely responsible" for their suffering in the last decade; Hindus in Bangladesh are safer and more secure than Muslims in India: Editor, Dhaka Tribune, Zafar Sobhan
    ...........................................
In an interview where his comments about India will come as surprise to many and may be deemed offensive by some, the Editor of the Bangladeshi newspaper, the Dhaka Tribune, says Bangladeshis feel “an antipathy” for India and they hold the country “squarely responsible for everything they have suffered in the past decade of increasingly autocratic Awami League misrule”. Zafar Sobhan says that, as a result, India today is viewed in Bangladesh in very similar terms to the way America was viewed in Iran in 1979 when the Shah was overthrown and fled the country.
In a 30-minute interview to Karan Thapar for the Wire, Mr. Sobhan explained that the “antipathy” Bangladeshis feel for India is a direct result of their perception that Indians - particularly officialdom and ministers - look down upon Bangladeshis and are patronizing and condescending in their attitude to them. He specifically cited the Home Minister’s use of the word “termites” to describe Bangladeshis and the fact that Bangladeshis are commonly referred to in the media as “infiltrators”. He said: “Bangladeshis understand very well the low opinion that many if not most Indians harbour about us.”
I am only giving you the main points made in this connection by Mr. Sobhan. Please see the interview for greater details. He speaks about this at some length.
Explaining why Bangladeshis hold India “squarely responsible” for their suffering over the last decade, Mr. Sobhan says: “The reason is simple: everyone knows … that it was India who propped up and supported the Hasina regime, batting for it internationally, being the first to recognize its bogus elections, soft-pedalling its dictatorial nature and defending it and protecting it at every turn.”
Mr. Sobhan says: “It doesn’t help that more than three weeks after her ouster, India appears to still be supporting Hasina and the Awami League and that it hasn’t at all come to terms with the catastrophe of its Bangladesh policy.” He adds that if Sheikh Hasina is formally granted asylum in India it will have a negative impact in Bangladesh adding, however, that it will not be a “deal-breaker”.
Mr. Sobhan says: “India will need to re-build the trust and confidence of the Bangladeshi people from scratch.” However, he also adds that the door is by no means closed. He says: “We recognize that India is a burgeoning world power and that good relations with the two countries are not just desirable but in fact indispensable … we also understand that the ties that bind our two countries are far greater than that which divides us.”
Again, I am only giving you the main broad points. There is a substantial discussion about all these issues which you must see by watching the interview yourself.
Mr. Sobhan also spoke about the nature and character of the Monsoon Revolution that has dramatically changed Bangladesh. Here he said two or three important things.
First, “The movement that toppled Sheikh Hasina is not an Islamist revolution. The students at the forefront of the movement are … democrats and they wish to see a truly democratic Bangladesh.”
Second, he said “Hindus are not in danger” adding: “The notion that Hindus were the subject of some kind of pogrom and that their targeting and dispossession was in fact an integral prong of the revolution is a fiction.”
In fact, he made one specific point comparing the treatment of minorities in Bangladesh to the treatment of minorities in India. He said: “Minorities in Bangladesh are much safer and more secure than in, say, India, just to pick a random country by way of comparison.”
Again, you must see the interview to fully understand these points.

I feel so sad at the truth of what is said here by Mr Sobhan. I am an Indian citizen who has lived in Bangladesh for several years - I have the highest regard for this beautiful resilient people from whom I have learnt a great deal. I love my country but I am pleading with Indian leaders and media to treat Bangladesh as a Sovereign state full of dignity that needs to be respected. This is the way we forge a positive relationship for the future. Bangladesh is full of intelligent, self respecting highly articulate people an example of which we see today in this interview. I hope this interview reaches the highest most reasonable minds in India

@anandasekhar7402 because those who are children of the soil - whether Bangladesh soil or Indian soil deserve to live in their own countries irrespective of religion. Mr Sobhan has pointed out that there have been atrocities against minorities in the immediate aftermath of this revolution...however the media spreads a wave of terror through exaggerating those numbers and people start fleeing to the borders. We employ many people from both faiths and they are all working together as brothers and sisters despite the current climate. A lot depends on weather the media fans the flames of hatred and suspicion or calms the fears of people.

Long story short, BD is reacting to Indian Govt's foreign policy and strategic approach towards BD, the fact that majority never voted in the last 15 years should be a message for all. India is a much bigger country, the biggest in the South Asia but how is India demonstrating that? Is it through domination , power and negative media? India definitely has bigger responsibility in maintaining stability in the region? Please show your empathy towards the innocent killing of our children who are students. All we saw coming from your press is questions about communal killing, which was indeed political. So many muslims were killed throughout which was totally ignored from your media do not leave the majority BD people very happy. Many children are still struggling in the hospitals. I think Mr. Thapar didn't grill Mr. Sobhan regarding many points. He just tried to brush aside the real issues while outrightly denying the attacks on minorities which is real.
    1. He was not asked why people from north east and west bengal, and any other part where refugees are settled (specially andaman) have such a low opinion about Bangladeshis (only bengali muslims).
    2. Why should india trust jamaat when there have been instances of terrorist incidents, radicalism, wahabaism, hindu phobia, dream of gajba-e-hind at their behest right from partition.
    3. He was not asked why BNP provided safe heaven to north east separatists in bangladesh when they were in power?
    4. While some of minority attack is wrongly reported, he failed to identify that this really is happening, including temple vandalism, forcing the academicians from minority sect to resign forcefully.
    5. He was not asked why an ordinary bengali Muslim bangkadeshi put religion over the "bengali identity"?
    6. Can he deny why so many hardliners, known terrorist were released from prison under this Caretaker govt?
These reasons are more than enough for india to feel jittery regarding recent developments in bangladesh.
Looks like he has been appointed as an unofficial spokesperson for the caretaker Govt.

@@natarajb204A Huge number of the hindu population left Bangladesh just after partion. Many have went to India in 1971 never came back. Many left During the famine of 1974 and never returned. Now the decraese of Hindu population to 7% is mostly beacuse the Ratios of Muslim population have increased in Bangladesh. The birth rate among the Muslim community have been extremely higher compared to other ethnic minors. The percentage of Hindu nationals was 29% in 1947 which was around 1.22 cr. of total population(around 4.5 Cr according to 1950 consensus). Today the percentage is 7.95% which is approximately 1.40 cr of total population(17.2 cr total). In between this time Hindu population have grown by 12% overall in Bangladesh. It becomes easy to spread propaganda using percentage and hiding the real numbers. They easily manipulate people playing the percentage card which obviously will be lesser when the comparing number is higher even if there is growth. Go through any Indian publications, They will not give you the numbers. They will not even mention the high growth of other ethnic populations. They will just frustrate people with the percentage.

The Indian govt must reflect as to why the Bangladeshi people have such negative sentiment despite those historical bond and support in those most critical moments in our history ? I am sure the Indian think tank and RAW can easily identify the root causes. Any amount of hatred or misconception can be ironed out, provided there is an acknowledgement and a sincere interest in addressing those issues with an open mind. I had a lot of respect for Karan Thapar Ji. This interview has wiped it off. The Tribune editor is ranting against India. Assuming whatever he said is true. Don't Bangladeshi people distinguish between indian govt and indian people. They burnt India donated ambulances, burnt Indira Gandhi cultural centre. This may hurt indian sentiments. They r developing country. And burning ambulances doesn't help their nation. Let their govt clear electricity bills first before bitching about India.
Whether they like it or not. They r surrounded by India. If they take panga with India. Their future is doomed. Indian leverage will speak in due course. Modi Ji govt is very composed and have not reacted to their Hindu butchering. They deserve Israel type of reaction. Not 1 mention of condemning these killings.
    2. Justifying killing of Hindu minorities or talking cold language like a British and shrugging off saying " I don't deny such incidents" - if the Tribune editor family were kidnapped and raped and butchered. Then he will know the pain. Since he is British educated, rich. He doesn't understand pain of poor, minorities hindus. Til then, and comparing with India. Is a shame to Bangladeshi.
    3. It is a true fact, millions of Bangladeshi r illegal immigrants in India and politicians like Mamta have used them as vote bank. Not to ignore Rohingya terrorist.
    4. It's sad that 2500 indian soldiers gave their life for creation of Bangladesh. And what tribute r they getting. Bitching on India. Not to mention consistent militancy training and anti India activities.

An immense sigh of relief after hearing the parting comments from Karan Thapar. He wrapped up the conversation well and that of course shows Zafar Sobhan was able to get through with most of the questions asked. More than antipathy it’s reached a point of ennui now that after so many interviews, write-ups, the Indians haven’t yet taken note on the fact that we are an independent sovereign nation, who were suppressed in practising our voting rights for the past fifteen years; even more importantly, they are safeguarding the friendship that the current Indian government, or for that matter, even the opposition there, has with one individual who is responsible for mass killings, murders, corruption, hegemony, arson, treason, attacks on minorities, disruption and chaos to set off the interim government, are points of discontent among Bangladeshis. Another point not too difficult for Bangladeshis to decipher is why the above stand to protect a dictator is so important to the Indian government. The fact that India has provided her shelter also reflects that it doesn’t echo the sentiments of millions of people of Bangladesh who, having no political background, took to the streets after the mass police shooting of our boys and girls.
India should foster its relationship with Bangladesh, the nation and its people by acknowledging the fact of the murders that were committed in broad daylight that have been encapsulated in video footages for all to see and that these killings of unarmed civilians committed by the police happened on the directive of S.H. Acknowledging this fact will gain it back it’s lost trust of Bangladeshis over India’s foreign policies. Going the way they are the Indian press and the Indian government, they gain our ennui as we move onto pray for our State to regain its institutions destroyed under the past regime.
As for Mr. Zafar Sobhan, Sir read up on the pograms that took place in India against the Muslim and Dalits, Kashmiris. The situation in Missouram, the lynching of the minority Muslims, Arundhati Roy’s books are a great place to start. You can then support your statements with greater conviction.
