Smashing little pattern. I’ve always noticed the heads on your flies are always immaculate Davie. Something I definitely have to work on. Will also try cutting my deer hair smaller than what I have been after watching this, not the first time I’ve accidentally snipped my thread when trying to tidy up the ends, good job I’ve no swear box at home or I could have a Porsche by now from tying (trying to tie) deer hair
Looks so buggy - will definitely tie a few of this - but probably not as nice as yours :) It's always a pleasure to watch you at work - you are the best. Thanks for sharing!
Excellent fly Davie! quite similar to a Duck Fly! Would it be possible for you to make a video of the Olive/ Light Olive version of this?? Would love to try these in the summer!
Mr. McPhail, you never cease to impress me sir. Your flies are tied so clean. I have a list of flies from your videos I'm adding to my collection of flies to tie for the Colorado rivers and creeks. With all the flies that you tie, do you fish with all of them, or do you have favorites that you focus on for fishing?
Hi Terryll Monroe, I have fished this one in the video but I don't fish them all. Some are for certain waters that friends are fishing and a few are styles with some ideas of my own using different materials which I have done over the years as I used to work as a designer for a fly tying company..I do like to fish dries as this is how I started though I like all types of fly fishing...I'm glad you enjoy the videos and thank you for the kind words... All the very best Davie...
Hi Gary, I've tyed these flies on standard shank, curved and as well as the one I used in the video. These are for a friend and he likes the Fulling Mill Short Shank Special much like I do as it's a very useful hook for many flies.... All the very best Davie
Hi Jase, The scissors I used in the video are the Loon 4 inch Razor which are very good and have stayed sharp for a few months which is good for me as I can wear them out quite quickly so I'll be looking to buy another pair very soon..I'm glad you liked the fly... All the very best Davie...
Of the flies you tie, about what percentage are your original patterns? I'm just curious, since it seems that you have mastered most known tying techniques, have a background in biology, and much experience as an angler yourself. I realize that you do a lot of tying for others - which necessitates tying what they want, unless they don't know exactly what they want, and then you tie what they need (I've had to do this a few times). Also, do you feel that you have any techniques that you yourself need to improve on?
Hi handcannon, I have to be honest I would have to look through them to see but I would say more than half are original patterns and the rest are variants with my own wee touches...The main reason I still enjoy tying flies today as I did more than 30 years ago is because you never stop learning so you never get bored which can happen with many hobbies. I would love to tye more classic salmon flies but unfortunately quality materials can be hard to find plus finding the time you need to tye them can be hard to find...thank you very much for the kind comments... All the very best Davie
Hi Cesar Julio Videla Alfonso, I have attached two links, one is how to make the legs and the other is to the wholesale company that sell them so if you know a shop that stocks their materials then they should be able to help you...
Hi Robert, Golden Olive and Claret Bumbles, Kate Mclarens, Soldier Palmer, Goats Toe, Zulu, Connemara Black, Clan Chief, Dabblers of any colours, Hedgehogs, Hoppers and Muddlers are some of the many patterns and styles you could tye and I would use if I was going..I have a lot of these flies on my youtube channel so if you do a search you should be able to find them...I know you will have a great time as I have had many friends that have fished there over the years and always caught fish..10s, 12s are the most popular sizes so I hope this is of some help to you.. All the very best Davie....
Hi Aldo21t, It's works on the rivers just as well as it does on the lochs though I usually leave the legs off when fishing the river...I'm glad you like it... All the very best Davie
