King of the Britons? Well, I didn't vote for him.
Monarchs are not elected in general.
We're a peasant commune

"Geoffrey of Monmouth was to history what Michael Bay is to movies" that's the best description I've ever heard, thank you lmfao

This is actually giving Michael Bay waaaaay too much credit... Bad Boys or The Rock aren't going to live on for 850+ years...
Nowhere near enough explosions in Geoffrey's work.

Hail to the true king of the Britons!
Well I didn’t vote for you.
as someone who has visited Tintagel castle its views of the sea off the cliffs are beautiful and a fascinating site
Agreed
I need to spend a few years wandering the UK countryside taking in all the historic, and legendary places.
Dont leave Cornwall, nicest place I've ever been, specially if you can find a hidden beach
I'll go with you.
Frogsquatch 😎sounds like fun
What a splendid idea!
When you finish in Cornwall head up to Northumberland. Similar beauty, beaches and castles just a bit colder.

No doubt the Spanish editor got a bit confused on this one
I think it was a subtle alpha move. 'Don't forget we own you'.
it is in an English county, the map is wrong

Can you do a video on neuschwanstein castle? It would be interesting to hear you talk about crazy king Ludwig and his obsession with Lotharian
I’ve been there twice! It’s a really cool part of Cornwall. Great memories.
Almost certain that Simon's beard is reaching the point of becoming sentient and will soon take over.
What on earth makes you think it hasn't already? Conspiracies for the ages..

Cornwall is really close to my heart, I regularly go there on holiday. This was really interesting, thanks Simon and team! Would love to see a video on St Michael's Mount in Marazion, Cornwall, and its relationship to it's French counterpart...

Was 'the long bit sticking out just under Wales' meant to point to actual west wales or did southern England just shrink a bit? XD
I'm beginning to wonder if these goofs are just goofs or just Simon's way of trolling the audience. Not quite sure yet.

The little bit shrinks when it's cold
Hey it gets cold on the isle
Can you do a video on either the Tryweryn resevoir, or the Aberfan mining disaster? Especially as a famous monument has been vandalised here in Wales, it would mean a great deal if you could raise awareness of either of the two incidents.

I went to Tintagel about twenty years ago - how anybody managed to build anything there beats me. There was some archaeology going on on the slopes, which looked fit only for mountain goats.
That was over a thousand years ago, it’s quite possible erosion made things worse
I drove about 3 hours to go there to find out it was under some sort of construction and they were closed dammit lol, still not been again.
@@TheBeastsHere you should make the effort and go again. It's my absolute favourite place in England, truly spectacular. The pics in this video don't even begin to do it justice
@@TheBeastsHereWhen was this? 1160 AD?
@@analoguesine1691 A bit earlier, my bro Arthur told me to come another day, guess the carrier pigeon got lost or shot by an arrow.
I had stayed at the Camelot Castle Hotel which overlooks the ruins a few years back, and with the typical British stormy nights, you can easily imagine how these legends of a great king coming from there could have been made. It exudes mystery, demands respect and will likely inspire more tales to come in future generations!
The amount of time’s I asked my parents if we could stay at that hotel when we went when I was a kid are insane 😂
I'm not a believer in ghosts, but I suspect my beliefs might change if I were to be wandering through those ruins on a dark and stormy night with thunder and lightning. I really, really don't wish to test that suspicion at Tintagel. The legends however are awesome.
Been many times, Ted does a cracking cream tea there.
I've stayed over night in there too. The owners are a bit strange, always trying to sell you art, over-priced art. They have a framed painting hanging on an interior wall with a price tag of half a million pounds! They also want you to look at their 'Light Box' demonstration deep in the bowels of the hotel's cellars. I saw faces go in through the door that led downwards and the same faces return with bewildered or 'get me out of here' looks upon them. A little too creepy if you ask me.
But did they put you in the lightbox in the cellar and make you buy one of Ted's paintings?
What's with the image @ 3:20 showing South Wales when you're talking about Cornwall and Devon lol
Ben Jamin What things have you been listening to lately?
That confused me too. I think he was showing where Somerset is but that's not where it is. It's the next county to the east of Devon. The area pointed to on the map is Pembrokeshire which was never mentioned.
@@LuckyDT why do you ask?
I have been here, and it is such an amazing place to see, would recommended to anyone traveling in the UK
Shame about that ugly hotel on the cliff above it.
Thank you I can't wait to see it!
This is making me want to reread The Mists of Avalon...
And _whoah, Simon's beard is getting HUGE._
Was a great book, pity the author was such a monster.
It makes me want to build a castle in Minecraft :)
That is my.favorite book!
Great book. Recommend reading the whole series
Lord ballsac the 2nd it’s one of the many, many, many retelling of Arthur legends. It’s views of Arthur are pretty grey, he got his good and bad. He betrayed a lot of his vows.
You always hear about Tintagel, but never get a good explanation, this does so; thank you Simon.
Frogsquatch Why are you here?
Only two centuries? I want to see Dubai living that long with that kind of status.
Dafuq? 😂
I thought that was just drunk me thinking that! Surely dubai is wealthy due to oil... Which may not be such a hot commodity in the age of renewable energy.

I'm hoping to take a trip to England in the next couple of years, and among the itinerary would be to visit sites associated with Arthurian legend such as Tintagel. I really cannot wait.
I hope this guy never stops making videos, it doesn't matter what mood I'm in, if I see a Geographics video, especially late at night... I'm probably gonna watch it.
I dunno what that arrow at 3:18 is pointing at but it sure ain't Somerset lol.
(I do, it's Pembrokeshire. I grew up in Somerset and my family used to go on holiday to Pembrokeshire a lot, so this is all a spooky coincidence for me lol)
(edit: lol i legit went to school in Glastonbury, this video is blowing my mind)
I’m from Pembrokeshire and that arrow is definitely pointing at me 🏴🏴🏴🏴

Well the Fisher king's grail castle was on Mann's. Read Norma Goodrich's Arthur and Grail books sometime.
It’s a mistake in the video. Tintagel is in England not wales. It’s near kinda Newquay on the very south west coast of England just over an hour away from Plymouth
Tamar is said like "Taymar" :)
"Go and tell your master that we have been charged by God with a sacred quest. If he will give us food and shelter for the night, he can join us in our quest for the Holy Grail!"
Anything Arthurian.
Sorry but we've already got one you see.
I'll ask him but I don't think he'll be very keen.
go away or i shall taunt you a second time!
Maybe we will find out what really happened to Tintagel in the new Bill and Ted documentary!
Can you please do a biographical on Geffory of Malmouth? I've read a fair bit about him but I just can't get a real sense of the man. All I really know was that he was somehow involved in the church.
Monmouth
Nothing like trying to watch a video and be interrupted every 3 minutes by ads. Plus an inserted ad for Babel. These are starting to get ridiculous. Love the content of the videos, hate all the interruptions.
Even worse when you find out the video was actually sponsored by the Cornish Tourism Department. And as he says, Tintagel castle was pure propaganda. So this whole video is really an ad for propaganda, layered with ads and intererrupted by ads.
That's why the rest of us paid for premium. Your rewards for the $11.99 you dole out is worth it.

I took my profile pic about 12 years ago from atop this very cliffs in tintagel.
Greetings from germany
What a coincidence, I have just started to read The Mist of Avalon.
When I was barely 20 I visited southern England and bought this super cool sword 🗡. It was epic! When headed home and wrapped in a borrowed hotel blanket and duct tape. Tried to carry it on. Made it up to boarding with my sword under my arm, I shared the details with the stewardess and they said sure, but they would have to stow it in a forward hold for the flight. Sure I said. Just as we were about to takeoff I noticed a bit of activity at the front as the door closed. As we were taxiing the stewardess came to me handing me a card with a phone number on it to contact as the captain had decided swords were a bit much. I called, wrote, cried and screamed but my fine very expensive sword (it was like $300 in 1981) was never seen or found again. I will never forgive AA for that, irks me to this day.
Tried to carry plastic disposal (safety) razor onto a KLM flight (operated by Air France) departing Hong Kong for Amsterdam. Zealous female at check-in told me I couldn't take razor onboard. I pointed to nearby pilot, asked "is that my pilot", politely asked pilot if he was OK with razor, he said no prob. I got to keep the razor. I said " what am I going to, shave everyone to death?" Sometimes you should defend common sense and not give into the "Karens"
djrmarky - LOL! Funny, but I doubt it. I do NOT blame the pilot. This was way before all of the current flight restrictions, and it is entirely the Captains prerogative to allow or not allow anything or anyone on his plane. I think someone working for AA or the airport there might have liked it, and taken it home as it was a beautiful piece of work! Who knows, it may be sitting in some unclaimed baggage warehouse this very day rusting away. My friends said it was Karma for taking the hotel blanket to duct tape it in for the flight. Sadly as it was not checked, I had no ticket, and I was young and didn’t think to put my name on the package... it’s a goner. LOL!
Off topic, and possibly something commented regularly, but your narrative style sound so like Simon Schama, and I mean that as a wonderful complement. History of Britain is a personal favorite piece of history documentary. It is a pleasure watching your videos.
Now we can listen to Danny's stories on business blaze about his home with a little more context!
I was expecting this video when he said he'd never heard of it.
Danny is from Rotherham. Did I miss something mentioned about Cornwall on a recent Blaze?
Danny origin story
At the least Simon can now properly pronouce Tintagel.
@@ladykoiwolfe you mean it's NOT tint-a-gel?
Richard of Cornwall.
Bloody legend. Second son of King John and a colourful figure during the 13th Century. Probably the richest man in Europe. Built Tintagel Castle to connect Arthurian legends. Went on crusade, though more of a virtue signal as he fought no battles and negotiated peace. Opposed Simon De Montfort before it was cool, and rebelled against him. Tried a weak power grab to acquire Poitou, but was thwarted. He bribed the electoral princes in Germany, and managed to wag himself Emperor. Though as King of the Romans, he only visited the country 4 times and soon was booted out and replaced. He was the "bad miller" who hid in a windmill at the Battle of Lewes. Managed to wag himself as lord of Warminster before he suffered a crippling stroke which eventually killed him. Even then he wasn't done, as his influence on Germany created a power vacuum.
What a scallywag.
bloody legend? More like bloody peasant!
@@seanmessick9330 Peasant? Being royal nullifies you from that.
I love to listen to him talk...so intellectual with a dramatic flair :) He's Great
I thought there was speculation that the roman general Lucious Artorius was the origin of King Arthur's legend
Speculation yes, but he live a couple of centuries earlier than the Saxon wars.
@crazy silly Huh, I suppose the timeline would makes that possible. Rome began leaving Britain around 400 AD, Justinian disbanded the western Roman army around 450 AD, and also around 450 AD is when the Anglo-saxons are said to have began entering England en mass. An interesting hypothesis.
@@Simonsvids So did the story.
Dillon Brunschon It’s a Channing Tatum movie...lol. ‘The Eagle’
The timeline doesn't make sense but bear in mind that Arthur's dad was also Arthur. There's also an early report (C9th) of Arthur and Mordred falling at the Battle of Camlann in 537. Which may be Camboglanna on Hadrian's Wall. There are also various legends connecting Arthur with Cumbria.
Tintagel is beautiful, as is all of Cornwall. Can only recommend a visit.
These comments lol... Simon beard fan club ❤️
OMG! I'm a 21 year old stripper living in Dallas, Tx.
And this is my deep dark secret:
Im OBSESSED with anything King Arthur.
I mean it. 100% obsessed.
I've studied everything from the ancient religions of Brittain to the Celtic/ Druid/Pagan/Pict/Saxon mythology just to understand certain key figures in the story, their motivations, ect (which is hard to do because the druids never wrote anything down).
From James Frazier's _The Golden Bough_ (an *essential* add to anyone interested in a good read on relevant comparitive religions and the aforementioned mythologies).
I learned how to properly sketch the beautiful architecture of old cathedrals just so I could try and recreate my models of all the possible Camelots.
I love anything and everything to do with King Arthur!
(i recommend reading The Mists of Avalon to anyone wanting to start as well as The Once and Future King)
Poss not the best time to reveal the Arthur story is total ****, At the absolute most would be a Romano Britain commander and probably massively racist and against the largely peaceful immigrants from Saxon lands.
I'm from Dallas too! I've been to Tintagel! It is really beautiful (whether or not King Arthur was there). If you ever have a chance to visit it you should. The Arthurian stories/myths are so fun! Also, I don't think your interests are something you should have to keep secret! :)
Hm...I would recommend Le Morte D’Artur actually
King Arthur never existed. The accepted belief amongst historians and archaeologists is that "Arthur" was probably a Romman Britain commander. ""King Arthur" is an imaginary character created by poets/writers to glorify/glamorize that era in history, which was pretty damn bleak tbh
Wasn't the writer of mists of Avalon a pedophile?
3:17 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
"The long bit sticking out just under Wales" is right but the image is confusing. It points out where Wales is but doesn't show 'the long bit' (being the South West of England) under that area of the map
"A producer of trash par excellence". I'm going to use that phrase somewhere.
Simon's beard is reaching Merlin levels.
Saber from Fate is my favorite version of King Arthur for being a cute and badass Anime girl. Disclaimer: Not historically accurate.
No worries, neither is Arthurian legend, so she fits in well
A man of culture
Considering it’s very likely the guy never existed, no telling are accurate
How do you *know* that the real King Arthur wasn't a cute anime girl? :P
I'm like 98% sure this guy is an American doing a bad English accent...
"William War-sesster" "Tam- are valley" something's definitely off.
I can't put my finger on the weirdness of the accent though. Touches of Lloyd Grossman & a bit of antipodean in there maybe.
He sounds bored out of his mind or like he’s just taking the piss!! He does sound a bit like Lloyd Grossman lol

That was very well done, I have been there, & whatever you believe, it felt special, maybe that is only an empath thing, maybe you just have to let your mind join the dots.
I enjoy these videos immensely but so many adverts for not a hugely long video is off-putting 🤔

I was at Tintagel last week! What a beautiful place. When I lived in England in the 80s nobody had ever really heard of Tintagel and my family didn't know anything about it. It's terrific that it is now a destination and people are able to visit and take in its glory!
I didn't hear a thing. I'm staring at Simon's beard.♥️
Aparantly in a recent dig on and around the site, The port that was once there was a hell of alot bigger than previously thought and artifacts from northern africa were found amougst other instresting relics and exotic materials from around the world. During the dark ages this place was litarally the source of tin for all surrounding the mediteranian. The main import and export for britain. Amazing! ✌
Who else would love to hear more about the Cornish rebellions?
The Plantagenets rules from 1154-1485 and produced 14 kings...many very young...6 from the house of Lancaster and York...many relatives built many castles and Abbys in Europe...
I loved the use of “The Parting Glass” in this video. One of my favorite old songs!

I remember going there as a kid... really windy day... Interesting place nonetheless!
I noticed that you didn’t mention the village. Tintagel is the village and tintagel castle is... well .. the castle aha. There is also the cave that is on the beach directly below the remains of the castle which has links to the legend of merlin which is why locals call it merlons cave. I go there every year as I have family living there it’s a very nice place with one of the best fudge shops in the West Country. Every morning you wake up and smell fresh fudge being made it’s the best. The whole village is said to be haunted with the main pub and the hotel being a major hotspot for the paranormal
Oooo, somewhere I've been! Fun! Super touristy, but I loved the walk along the cliffs.
Arthur of Camelot, serves more value as a Figure of identity and a legend of aspiration to the Brits, than he ever could have served as a man who ruled by grace and blade. A figure too large for life a man who's accomplishments and legend transcend time immemorial.
And yet, he most likely never existed, and if he did.. would have been rather impressed how his tale is remembered as the ultimate fantasy fishing trope. Each retelling being more grand and noble than the last. Likely his origin is actually in Arthur the Red. And has been transcribed by a people who needed leadership from a leader grander than they ever got, and the divine strength of a king, who had the ear of the Almighty and the battle cry of a nation.
Noble and great King Arthur, king of all Brits. What a wonderful tale the likes of which American Folklore could never quite muster the same majestic tone and sense of noble duty to a people, place, and time.
Hey simon, love all the channels, we should do an English vs Australian collaboration for your fans!
Yeah, that arrow is pointing at Pembrokeshire, you want to go about 100 miles south. Love, a proud Cornish Woman x
Also, complete mispronunciation of Tamar! (It's Tay-mar btw) Wouldn't have known that was where you were referencing unless I saw it written down, and I grew up in the valley!
Same here, English First Cornish Second though. could never refer to myself as a Proud Cornish man. most of Devon was in the same Kingdom and fought in the same rebellions and that is Firmly a part of England. the Anti England complex with some Cornish is ridiculous, like calling people Emmetts. it saddens me

Thanks to the British, the viking age history is so popular. Seldom is the history inbetween and intertwined taught to anyone but university or professors of history students. History is fantastically interesting and if written well, not very bias to any power of the age. RUclips have been known to burn its content in the past, hopefully not in the future.

I was thinking that too. Saber is my favorite version of King Arthur and one of my Waifus. Although not historically accurate.
That statement would make more sense if i 'tripped' over some mushrooms and landed in a vat of 'acid'
FATE/STAY NIGHT!
Uther Pendragon was an actual historic person. There is contemporary evidence that he was derided for trying to divert a river to build a moat. It is unfortunate that his name was misused in the attempt to give authenticity to the fictional character Arthur. Sadly some storytellers had no respect for history.
I loved being in Tintagel! Although (as you can see from my profile photo) I'm from the London area, I felt so comfortable in that lovely little village, like I belonged there, it was for the first time in my life like I was home.

First time I've seen a video that roughly tells the cornish truth and not what is taught in schools
Athrwys ap Meurig (c. 605-655) was a prince, and possibly king, of Gwent and Glywysing in Wales.
He was the son of Meurig ap Tewdrig, a King of Gwent and Glywysing in South Wales. His mother was Onbrawst, daughter of Gwrgan Fawr, King of Ergyng. His siblings were Idnerth and Ffriog. His wife may have been Cenedlon ferch Briafael Frydig; his children included Morgan ab Athrwys, later a king of Gwent, as well as Ithel and Gwaidnerth. While Athrwys's father Meurig and son Morgan are named as kings in the Book of Llandaff, Athrwys never is.
I've been researching King Arthur greatly as of late and yes the above is taken from Wikipedia, there are many sources out there pointing to this Arthur and a possible earlier one, around the time of the Roman's invasion of Albion that have been sorta mixed together to create the legend we know. There are a lot that points to Arthur being King of Northern Wales and middle eastern part of England. Either way I do find it completely fascinating. ☺️
I recently did a research of my ancestors names and all the way back comes up with king arthrwys and many other kings and queens of the area. I wonder sometimes if that can be verified or if it is common and likely to be false? I have read that many people find kings and queens in there ancestry and that most are not at all related. Either way I've always been interested
