Agree but Jujitsu from medieval Japan was from multiple schools and clans with each ones had their own techniques. There was not a universal school for Jujitsu back then. Judo took techniques from several schools. Today, most western dojos branded as Japanese/traditional jujitsu are a bunch judo throws combine with strikes and joint locks. Nothing specific to a particular medieval jujitsu school. Only exception that comes in my mind is Daito ryu Jujitsu which is an original jujitsu school that has survived.

I would say its only a combination of sambo and aikijiujitsu, first because we saw at the Ruska Roma kids dressed as sambist, and i think thats a hint onto John's past, and then Aikijujitsu because those are the more distinguishable movementes aside from sambo, and of course since it is a theory he is a former marine i would not discard the idea of him being well fojnded on MCMAP or a military self defense system.
