Oh holy shit so this is actually cool. Let me (an indonesian) translate the nuance of the translation to you. "bertarung dengan anda" (fight with /alongside you) basically has a similar meaning to "bertarung melawan anda" (fight against you or just simply "fight you") in Bahasa Indonesia. But, they can definitely make the script "melawan", and even though from an Indonesian perspective hearing that only provides a small difference, it absolutely is easier to do it like that so the english translation is clearer. But they chose to instead go for the other word, "dengan", i believe whoever writes / translate that is aiming for the double entendre.
Really reminds me of the fencing scene from "The Princess Bride". For some reason watching people fight to death but with honour and respect for each other is weirdly heartwarming.
0:28 They're the most honorable men in John Wick history. They had him dead to rights and let him live. They're the only two that can say" We could've killed John Wick."
Vigo coulda also killed John Wick when he had him tied up, but choose to monologue. Mr.Nobody also coulda sniped him but waited for the price to go up. But yeah other than that, only those four had the chance to kill him.
Literally but they were honorable men like you said they respected John and for who he is in the assassination universe . That was a dream come true they idolized him
they let him live and help him up, then at the end when Wick Says "be seeing you" and puts his hand on his heart... its a sign of respect and they both look at eachother and know to stay down and close their eyes... a brilliant scene.... John Wick also nods his head and one dude says "its an honor to fight with you" and they used knives not guns, they planned on fighting not dying.
I think it's insight into Wicks reputation. He's probably spared other assassin's in the past while also wiping out groups of others who fucked around. John is absolutely deadly but doesn't go overboard, so he earns respect.
What "they both looks at eachother and know to stay down and close eyes" does even mean?? They were still with adrenaline and thought that with the advantage of John (sword and them both being on the ground) he would have killed them... But instead here come the relief after the "Be seeing you" and the acknowledgement that he will not kill them! So they stayed down and "closed the eyes" cuz they were pretty much exhausted 😅
It’s wholesome to see that John has Goku moments, when people who are sent to kill him just wanna spar too. He has awareness and even steps it up after getting through the previous scenes😂

To me, this fight is one of the most honorable in the whole series due to the amount of respect they show for Wick. It just shows us that he’s so dangerous and respected that they insist on an honest and honorable fight. Great writing on this scene.
I see alot of comments talking about how much the 2 are holding back and they are, but even with that it’s still an incredibly well choreographed and executed fight scene, also it kind of works in universe since they lampshade the fact that he’s slow and hasn’t done it in 5 years
Basically yeah, the actors are martial artists who are just faster than Keanu, who is, while a fucking irl badass, getting on in years, but it makes sense in universe two, John has been retired for 5 years, not only that but he's been non stop fighting pretty much, not giving time to heal his old wounds or rest his body, so it makes sense when two guys who are on his level end up actually kicking his ass.
@@shirosaki97 Do you happen to know if Keanu has gotten any sort of leg injuty? That is easily the weakest part of his move set, plus he runs in a funny way. Could explain the performance difference.
@@VRichardsn He's pigeon toed, especially when running, if you watch The Matrix it really stands out when he's running from Smith looking for a telephone.

@@ZAWARDOANIMS To each their own. I grew up on JCVD, Chuck Norris and Steven Seagal and, looking back, some of the choreography was pretty bad. One of my favorite movies for fight choreography is Raid Redemption. Brutal and brilliant

I just love how they gave Wick the respect of starting the fight cleanly... and after he beat them, Wick gave them the option to just stay down or continuing the fight (and probably getting killed). They chose wisely...
If you've seen the Raid movies, you know these two are holding back a lot, but I like how this movie uses that to its advantage and plays up the idea that they're just so thrilled to be fighting John Wick that they don't want to kill him, because they're having too much fun. :)
@@Shugarcloud That's the beauty of this scene, though. :) Imagine it from the writers' and choreographers' perspective, having to create a scene that features two famous and recognizable skilled martial artists. Obviously, there's no way Keanu Reaves can keep up with them, so they play up the fact that they're just having fun with him, and it honestly makes the whole scene that much more enjoyable to watch. :)
@Damsen Well, as I like to say, it's normal for different people to like different things. :) Like it or not, this was the only way they could have made this scene. If you don't like it, you might not want to watch John Wick 4, because it has a lot of similar fight choreography. Like don't get me wrong; Keanu Reaves is doing some very impressive stuntwork for a man his age, but he's definitely noticeably slower than he was in the first John Wick film, and the filmmakers are clearly working to adapt the film around that.
These two are holding back because they have a lot of respect to John Wick and that it's their boss' job to kill him. Not because they're characters from the Raid movies which has absolutely no connection to this one.
@@LittleDrowskie It's actually both. :) Yes, in-Universe, that is their motivation for holding back while fighting John Wick, but I think it's safe to say the actors were hired for this movie in the first place because of their fame from the Raid movies. That is why the filmmakers gave them special treatment for this scene. Sometimes, events outside of a piece of fiction influence the way writers write it.
Only problem with this fight scene is, if you've already seen those 2 in action before, you will notice how much they are holding back and how Keanu is often seen expected a choreographed move that hasn't arrived yet. Not saying Keanu can't fight because I know he can to a point, but those 2 are on levels way above him.
Wow thanks for cracking the code.. you guys are all so smart. MAN to think we all thought Keanu REALLY was the best fighter in the entire world.. lol.. it's a movie. There is nothing wrong with this scene regardless of what you have or have not seen before..
@@darthartagnan4737 If you watch The Raid (and Riad 2), you too will notice how slow these 2 guys are moving here. If you've not seen it, you should. Then you will understand what we mean. There's holding back, and then there's really holding back.
I think they’re holding back because they don’t want to kill him because they respect him too much that it was just an honor to fight him and they never wanted to kill John in this scene
You are absolutely right. They only tested their skills on him and they were surprised when they took him down in their first attempt, which was why one said John is getting old. it was an honor to meet and fight him. they have no intention to kill him, it was their boss' job to do that (which was also confirmed when Zero said he is a fan and has long to meet him, meaning the students can kill John b4 the boss gets to meet him). win or lose, they enjoyed themselves meeting and fighting their idol.
Keanu had the script re-written to let these guys survive out of respect for them as both stunt actors and the hell they put him through in filming the choreography for this scene. Keanu said there's no way John Wick would have actually beaten these guys, and changed the script to have him spare them rather than kill them. True story.
@Harry64278it’s Keanu Reeves. He’s been known to take pay cuts for other actors to star in movies, and gifts crew members with expensive watches. This story tracks.
John not only spared these two for showing respect, but left them intact with no permanent damage. They had knives and he easily could’ve disarmed them by breaking wrists, but spared them even that!
The scene is an excellent portrayal of honor between combatants. They could have very well killed John when they had the chance to when they had him pinned on the floor, yet they didn't out of respect and honor for a man of his skill level. In return, he affords them the same respect and honor when he clearly could have killed them.
At 4:05 that line was supposed to be said in English but Keanu Reeves asked the two dudes he was shooting with, if they could tell him how to speak that line in their language.
Can we just talk about how strong these 2 actually are. Nobody does this well against wick. Not only do they overpower him multiple times but even give him multiple opportunities to catch his breath. Yes this is a very tired John wick whose injury retitled but it doesn’t take away from the fact that he’d be dead if they were more serious about killing him
Not to disrespect, but id honestly say this fight was purely from the fact he was at probs 25 percent energy left in the tank, with no weapon, because the moment he somewhat recovered, and gave himself a weapon it became a near one-sided ass whooping in a two on one fight. Which speaks even more of what a literal fucking beast John Wick is. To then fight someone even tougher with id say around 10 percent left in the stanima tank. If john was at full energy with no injuries, this woulden't even be a contest.
@@madmaxiemartialartsnerd485 yeah I’m aware that’s why I added the last few sentences. Even considering that these two faired far better than any previous fighters who also fought the same energy drained wick
I mean, we saw what happened when Wick decided to really start trying. If he were in better condition, it probably would have been a pretty short fight.
Dudeeee I just saw Chapter 4 last night and it was insane. It felt like all 3 Wick films wrapped up into one 3 hour cut. Fight scenes were incredible (Osaka hotel fight, dragons breath shotgun fight), and it had heart. So many good characters. Donnie Yen was a beast as well.
Ironically, this scene shows how difficult it is to fight a bigger opponent. When John got back into his groove, it didn't matter if they had knives or martial arts, he just threw them around and controlled them with his strength; people often say that size doesn't matter in a fight, and you would be partially correct if the big guy was lobotomized with zero knowledge of fighting.
Size doesn't matter in a fight when the size is close enough, or the smaller person is better trained and experienced in fighting larger opponents, but there is a reason weight classes exist. When it comes down to it, 1v1 with similar training/experience, if the opponent has and extra 3" of reach and 50 lbs of weight, they're gonna just be able to throw you around better, and getting thrown into a wall or picked up and slammed into the ground hurts no matter who you are.
I know karate and some krav, there is A LOT of ground defense drills, that can involve rolling and stuff like this. (Too bad I can't remember them all that well)
"With Gawd as my witness, he's been broken in half!" John Wick must practice the Kurt Angle 3 i's. Intensity, Integrity and Intelligence. The side belly to belly suplex did him proud too!
Man who knew a action movie series with fight scenes made by ACTUAL martial artists and stuntmen and no shaking cam or millions of cuts per second turns out to be so awesome. Hollywood really needs to take notes on this. Good practice.
Honestly, this is one of the most beautifully choreographed fights i have ever seen in cinema. The way it all centers around avoiding the blades yet inflicting damage flows beautifully. This is truly an all time great thank you Mr Keanu we love you
@@achmaddaru9456 yeah compared to the raid this was kids fighting with toy knives because no one got cut. we can blame it on "honor or respect" from characters in the universe but in reality they had to hold back since Keanu reeves wouldn't be able to handle the physical stress of Raid level fight choreography. There hasn't been a movie like it since that series even "The night comes for us" ending fight had some shock factor and gore but it wasn't the same amazing fighting cinema like the raid.
Love how this wasn't a fight to the death. This was more of a friendly spar. These guys obviously has a lot of respect for John. Glad that John spared their lives
I appreciate how much muscle exhaustion was being shown, like when Wick just hammers down on one of the guy's shoulders, it helps make the slowness that was sometimes visible much more realistic for older men fighting.
Two of the best martial arts choreographers in the world sparring with John Wick? Glad to see the Writers respected them enough to let them live and give John a damn good fight.
I can’t help but always respect and admire the respect the two men had for John Wick and vice versa. I was both relieved and happy that John showed them the respect and courtesy to not kill them.
i love how he straight up had a somewhat "fair" sparring match with these two, even going so far as to not break any limbs and only really resorting to takedowns/light punches
One thing that isn't brought up enough is that John Wick isn't shown to be unstoppable, even though he can come across that way. In every film there's an instance where his enemy could have killed him, but he was either saved or they chose not to.
their HUGE grins and smiles really sells it at the start of the fight. they look absolutely thrilled to be fighting john wick. i bet the actors all had a shitload of fun filming this.
It’s interesting how the phrase “be seeing you” is used in the franchise. Originally, Viggo’s use of it was basically a last taunt. He was dying, so “be seeing you, John” was saying you’ll die soon enough, and neither of us are ending up in any sort of good afterlife. If there is a hell, Viggo knows he will go there, and he’s telling John that he will be too. It’s used fairly often in the series past that point. Ruby Rose’s character basically uses it in the exact same way and same circumstance. Cassian uses it as more a threat (he can’t keep fighting but he intends to come after John again when he can.) I could be wrong, but I think this is the only time it’s used in a non-dark way. John says it as a way to say “this fights over, no reason anyone needs to die.” Wonder if that’s just coincidence, or if there is more of a pattern to it I just never picked up on before.
People are complaining that these two fighters are holding themselves back.... And that's true also... But if we go by the character of John Wick... He too doesn't strech any fight... He most of the time always goes for the instant kill... So in a way..even John Wick also holding him back.. by not going for the instant kill
With extremly good fighting skills, what makes john feared as well as respected by everyone is his determination to win every fight,he might not be winning sometimes but he always comes in wave after wave of attacks,"i can do this all day" attitude is what makes him scary.
As someone who has seen both Raid films, there's something almost 4th wall breaking about these 2 in particular saying "Nice to meet you, Mr. Wick." and "It's an honor to fight with you, Mr. Wick." It's almost like they're not their characters saying this, just two well-renowned action stars telling Keanu how happy they are to be there.
I love how blunt the fight gets. That sequence at ~3:10 - the repeated smacks, the ball kick, and the ear clap - feels like the same mental combo I came up with back in high school for if i ever got into a fight
John always did spare those he respected if he beat them in a fight. Cassian, Caine, Mr. Nobody, and of course these two. One of the best parts of his character by far.
Cassian wasnt spared though. The moment that knife is removed, without a team of surgeons immediately ready to jump in, he's dead. Notice they never showed him again?

they let him live and help him up, then at the end when Wick Says "be seeing you" and puts his hand on his heart... its a sign of respect and they both look at eachother and know to stay down and close their eyes... a brilliant scene.... John Wick also nods his head and one dude says "its an honor to fight with you" and they used knives not guns, they planned on fighting not dying.
thank you mr. obvious

I see alot of comments talking about how much the 2 are holding back and they are, but even with that it’s still an incredibly well choreographed and executed fight scene, also it kind of works in universe since they lampshade the fact that he’s slow and hasn’t done it in 5 years
They probably got told to hold back by their boss. He wouldn’t want them to take away his shot at fighting John Wick.

But the raid and wick are not in the same universe. Its like eayin "yeah, but john could stop time"
@@Shugarcloud That's the beauty of this scene, though.
I love at the end how they both relax once he gives them acknowledgment.

They only tested their skills on him and they were surprised when they took him down in their first attempt, which was why one said John is getting old. it was an honor to meet and fight him.

Keanu had the script re-written to let these guys survive out of respect for them as both stunt actors and the hell they put him through in filming the choreography for this scene.
