According to statistics of Zagradotryad actions, over 97% of detainees were returned to their original units, others were sent for more specific investigation (court martial, penal units etc), and less than 1% were executed by Zagradotryad themselves, but usually for spreading panic among troops or other actions that could be harmful for the nation's war effort. Also worth mentioning that Zagradotryad was usually like kilometers away from the frontline, so they wouldn't meet retreating soldiers on the field of battle.
