    Very charismatic young man. You could tell he was more interested in the teaching aspect than some others - he was delighted that Jake was grasping the techniques. He was also very generous in the roll, contrasting with Caio Terra in that he didn't feel the need to elicit the tap and just rolled through from each finishing position. The techniques he showed were also very usable even for lower level practitioners. I'm impressed.

    The first Spider guard technique actually works, even if you are trying to prevent a guard pass.....I've locked upper belts, and black belts with shifting the foot around the shoulder...the only caution is that in a tournament, its one hell a stalling technique because literally your opponent can not move or pass your guard, so in essence you have advantage so you have to make it work....I have also found that you can sweep using the first spider guard technique as well

    Oh yes I agree and I see your point. It's his lack of understanding of the new techniques being shown to him that made me ask the question. I believe anyone in his position should pay as much attention as possible and learn as quick as they can. I kept watching his videos and I learned what it's about but I am still a bit amazed by his inability to mimic the moves shown to him.

    To the question about the takedown: Make sure you keep your head up through the takedown. If you keep your eyes up, much like you would doing a squat, and immediately lift, it is very difficult for your opponent to catch you in the guillotine (I think that's the headlock you're referring to). Hope that helps!

    The gi does not limit ones learning self defense. It is the style of BJJ practiced. Since sport BJJ is becoming more and more popular, techniques are being and have been developed to win that type of competition. Since there is no punching to the face, techniques are developed where the practitioner is not even thinking about strikes. Similar techniques are happening in no gi training. it is not the gi that limits self defense, it is the techniques utilized.

    @gamereviewsfully,
    When you go for the takedown, put your ear against opponents belly button. Feels weird at first, but works the same and you don't get guillotined.

    No... but people do wear clothing, jackets, collared shirts, etc. If someone is wearing a tank top, OK, no collar choke, do something else. But if it's chilly outside and they have on a jacket, now you have more options to attack and control with.
