This video is EXACTLY what the general public needs so that they can better understand the technology and begin to trust it! Tesla owners warm up to Autopilot pretty quickly, but it seems like the general public doesn't seem to want to trust self driving cars. Waymo, thank you for pushing the industry. I firmly believe without your legwork, self-driving technology would not be evolving at such a rapid pace.
John Doe yes I’m absolutely fine with self driving cars BUT I think that we should have a function to have a way to control the car I’m fine with Tesla autopilot but people shouldn’t 100% not be able to drive we shouldn’t rely on tech that much but I’m ok with most things
"understand the technology" lmao Understand the opper most level of abstraction, you mean. Understand "if I tell it to go to B, it goes to B, safely". The technology behind this thing is the work of hundreds of thousands of people working for decades.
My mum is in her early 70s and is still capable of driving herself. However, long journeys are extremely tiring for her and some day soon she may have to give it up and lose her independence. Hopefully for her, some autonomous driving tech will facilitate her to carry on driving if not fully autonomously at first.
Autopilot solutions that use LIDAR do not make autopilot truly universal, and only autopilot solutions using computer vision are the protagonists of the future!
红太阳 That'd be if you want to mimic human driving. We almost exclusively rely on vision. But that's not the goal of autonomous driving. The goal is to be a huge lot better than human drivers by not only avoiding human errors and inattention but also utilizing advanced sensors like LIDAR.
If you rely on the laser radar just means lower reliability! Because Lidar can not work in many special weather conditions, there are many black hole problems
红太阳 It was mentioned, that the vehicles incorporate high res cameras and computer vision as well. Of course I cannot tell how far this is involved in actual environment scan, but I believe Waymo uses those for this as well.
I desperately want this for my simple freeway 40 minute commute to work in Utah. That's an hour and twenty minutes of unproductivity every single day. I'm not getting any younger. I'm very excited to have an autonomous car someday soon.
You have to count commute time into your working hours. If they pay for it or not is a different thing, but when racing job offers there is no difference.
In a couple decades the horrible driving skills of humans wont even be allowed on the road anymore, and it will be a good thing. Accident rates are going to be lower than they have ever been.
And if everyone has a self-driving car, multiple cars could likely communicate so that they can tell each other where they're going, to help to further avoid crashes.
Jeah it would also help with pseudo jams. I'm not sure what the correct term is in english, but basically if somebody brakes on the highway it can cause a jam "without a real cause". That jam could be solved in a few seconds if all cars just sped up by the same amount at the same time. But of course for humans such a task is impossibe. Self driving cars are probably better at driving than the average human, even today. The testing phase is just longer since lives are on the line. And of course because of the entire moral dilema.
Kudos to the production and cgi teams for incredible visualizations to help us appreciate the technology all the more. Can't wait to experience this first-hand after watching the project come to life here (living 10 minutes from this video.)
I live in Florida surrounded by people as old as I am and older. We need all the driving assistance we can get. ASAP. It does not have to be perfect. Just better than we drive. That should not be too hard? For instance: My neighbor is 98 and had to give up his drivers liscence because of a small accident. What is he going to do in an area laid out for car transport only? Taxi? Relatives? Kindness of strangers? BTW, his mind is sharp. Eyes and ears as good as mine. Just old. Wants to be independent. Like me. WAYMO should get a medal IMHO.
You have to start somewhere. Of course, self driving cars are likely to be limited to 1st world counties with decent roads, but history has shown over time tech improves exponentially.
Lol not going to lie for the first like 30 seconds of this video I was thinking it was poorly made because I could only see a shot of the ground. Thank you video for new interactive RUclips experience and making me feel like an idiot 😂
it has so many upsides that even if it did result in some mistakes or accidents its still easily worth it. My biggest worry though is all the people that drive for a living. I mean there are tons and tons of people that drive taxi or semi for a living that would lose their jobs.
I have finished watching this video completely. (我看完這部影片了) I am a Taiwanese who cares about the global affairs. (我是一個關心全球事務的台灣人) And, sadly, most of my fellow Taiwanese don't really care about the world. (但是,很不幸地,我大部分的台灣同胞不那麼在意世界。) Hopefully Taiwan can become increasingly globally-aware and globally-competitive. (希望台灣可以越來越有全球意識與全球競爭力。) God bless Taiwan. (天佑台灣。)
Are any of the road-test or simulation also done for European driving situations? I can tell from experience that is quite a difference not only between US and EU but even between European countries
No I think it might be a lot sooner but they will be Chinese brands. Somehow US brands never seem interested in the huge market that is the EU. I still can not buy a Pixel phone or a Google Home here in Spain.
All Chinese cars will run on Google technology. That's because Europe will never trust it's Data to Chinese government. Just look at your Android phone.
The Chinese are already starting data centers in Europe aimed at AI, to comply with EU regulations. www.businesswire.com/news/home/20180227005667/en/Alibaba-Cloud-Launches-Cloud-AI-Solutions-Europe
Actually, in rain or fog, it will propably be way better than us. Better management of slippery road, radars are working through rain and fog, not our eyes, etc.
I'm gonna tell you now that self driving cars will NOT replace manual cars ever. No way no how. Also who else is getting Matrix vibes were we take a strong step too far in technology and it will eventually turn against us
Nice and interesting car it's have an nice radar detector , camara and so on . I like this car so so much it's have an shiny design .This car is an One of best car in the wor
All of us blind individuals know that you guys can drive. But I’ll be so happy when that day comes for us blind individuals to regain our independence.
I wonder if there will be any interesting news at SXSW? Maybe Austin test rides during SXSW or even a real public launch date for Phoenix (finally) would be nice.
I think that this technology has amazing potential and will continue to improve year on year. In the short term I would be happy with driver assisting tech that makes my journey home safer when I am tired and finish a long shift at work coming home after midnight.
Why did that dipship self driving car stop about 10 feet before the stop line at the beginning of the video? I still like the idea though. A self driving car is a lot safer than a car driven by someone who is tired or pissed off.
I knew Google would have the most advanced system. I remember my teacher talking about this in 2009 when I was a kid. It only makes sense they are the most advanced they've been doing it the longest.
How does it handles another autonomous card next to it, does the lidar or the radar causes interference? What about tens of them, would them intercommunicate and help each other? If they do, would a rogue car make the other act erroneously?
I don't know about autonomous vehicles from other companies but I emailed a similar question and the response was that vehicles from Waymo will be able to communicate information between each other. That was more than a year ago though, the cars probably do it now.
To me its better to leave the cars alone, and let them navigate alone. Communication between them opens up all kinds off issues, and hacking needs to be considered. Nothing is hack proof, and we dont need fleets of cars all being hacked because they are on the same network.
Wild West, I agree. John Krafcik mentioned that the vehicles mostly operate offline and only connect online if they need to. Meaning most of the information is stored locally on the main and backup computing systems. Hacking would be very difficult if that's the case, hopefully they'll have a bunch of fail safes and enough encryption to minimize it further.

The Nerdy Engineer look if there is a steering wheel for an OPTION to drive yourself then it’s fine
John Doe yes I’m absolutely fine with self driving cars BUT I think that we should have a function to have a way to control the car I’m fine with Tesla autopilot but people shouldn’t 100% not be able to drive we shouldn’t rely on tech that much but I’m ok with most things
John Doe I also watched this video at 3 am so I’ll watch it again to refresh my mind
"understand the technology" lmao
Understand the opper most level of abstraction, you mean. Understand "if I tell it to go to B, it goes to B, safely". The technology behind this thing is the work of hundreds of thousands of people working for decades.
I wonder what the repair cost is of these things when something goes wrong, or stops working.
Cant wait to see blind people to finally have chance to live independent fully like this! 😘👍
Also the blind drunk!
I just want to be able to drive and be like "Hey look, no hands!"
My mum is in her early 70s and is still capable of driving herself. However, long journeys are extremely tiring for her and some day soon she may have to give it up and lose her independence. Hopefully for her, some autonomous driving tech will facilitate her to carry on driving if not fully autonomously at first.
you mean everyone not just those who cant see
And the disabled/elderly
you need to have testing experience on Russian roads
Hobo Hahahah!
Try Indian roads. Their processors will fry up and the car will come apart.
Hobo G why so you can steal the technology like your country does with everything
And Brazilian roads... then I'll believe!
Alex Benfica I can see it now South Americans using this to transport their drugs I ...mean people around
What a time to be alive!
yea right, what a time to be ali...*BOOM*
This is gonna make a car cost waymo money.
Martin Dennis haha and no one liked this comment just me i got it ;)
Martin Dennis punchline 😎😎😎
Waymor moni, u rite
I see what you did,
They could cut down the cost by partnering with a 3d printing car company
I've been seeing these vans all over here in Chandler. Havnt seen one make a bad move yet.
I have. They slow down unpredictively and turn.
I can't wait to get my first ride in a self-driving car. Great work, Waymo.
Future is now

WAYMO mainly use LIDAR!
Tesla will probably have full autonomy on the road long before Google does, especially considering that Google doesn't sell any cars.
jmocan I spent six weeks in Utah once. I didn't feel it was productive time either.
yeah and it will have more bugs then what google does.Because that is what rushing out a technology this complicated will result in
There go the days of high performance cars! I for one will never ever get into a driverless car
In a couple decades the horrible driving skills of humans wont even be allowed on the road anymore, and it will be a good thing.
Accident rates are going to be lower than they have ever been.

Fabian H. traffic snakes! I believe CGPGrey has a video about this.
Talk about YOUR horrible driving skills.
Joaquin Andreu Lol what are you even talking about
I normally don't watch 360° videos but this was a very pleasing to watch visual representation
Kudos to the production and cgi teams for incredible visualizations to help us appreciate the technology all the more. Can't wait to experience this first-hand after watching the project come to life here (living 10 minutes from this video.)

Bet this car won't move an inch in indian roads.
Actually Indian roads are easier. Less rules.
You have to start somewhere. Of course, self driving cars are likely to be limited to 1st world counties with decent roads, but history has shown over time tech improves exponentially.
I think he meant that there is always motorcycles and people on the road. So, this car, which is really carefull, will never be able to drive ^^
Le Collectionneur yep, also people here don't follow traffic rules.. A two lane highway would suddenly become 6 lane highway in no time
why not? I see Horrible drivers in Minneapolis all the time. india can't be as bad as that.
Lol not going to lie for the first like 30 seconds of this video I was thinking it was poorly made because I could only see a shot of the ground. Thank you video for new interactive RUclips experience and making me feel like an idiot 😂
They actually previewed this tech a number of years back and called it snoopavision.
All I have to do is sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride. Would take a while for me to get used to this kinda stuff but cannot wait.
Nice this will also help with things like people who are blind and reduce alot of drunk driving accidents
it has so many upsides that even if it did result in some mistakes or accidents its still easily worth it. My biggest worry though is all the people that drive for a living. I mean there are tons and tons of people that drive taxi or semi for a living that would lose their jobs.
It is cool how much waymo is supporting Chandler because I live in Chandler and it is cool to see 5 self driving cars at once
Is it easy to find one and take a drive in it? I live on the other side of Phoenix but was hoping I could head over there and go for a test ride.
its amazing🚗
Fast and Furious 9 with self driving cars..Vin diesel loses his job..
That was pretty well done. Pretty immersive with Google Cardboard
This is cool, flipping well done!
google maps should show estimated prices for waymo rides to help raise awareness about cost savings
Thank you so much. This will surely also help those who are disabled physically and mentally.
I have finished watching this video completely.

Impressive work !! It's outstanding ! Go go Waymo !

Good. EU laws > China
Congrats Your Video is Featured on TechGenez.com
Waymo is at least six years ahead of Tesla (FSD). Insane that this video is from 2018.
Really cool that they were able to make this video
I think This channel need more attention, that was amazing ❤️
Thank you
Can't wait for them to bring it to Europe!
best idea ever,Iam at the waiting list.
Absolutely incredible
Can we get a 360° degree Waymo experience in the rain or snow storm?
can you a give a technology chance to evolve and mature, before asking it to solve hardest challanges while in the babyshoes?
and don't forget fog
Actually, in rain or fog, it will propably be way better than us. Better management of slippery road, radars are working through rain and fog, not our eyes, etc.
Joonas: Well, 2 states have just granted driverless cars permission to drive on the road so it better work.
Well presented!
So cool! Hopefully in the future we all have self driving cars :D
I'm gonna tell you now that self driving cars will NOT replace manual cars ever. No way no how. Also who else is getting Matrix vibes were we take a strong step too far in technology and it will eventually turn against us

First time I m watching such unbelievable video!! Kudos to u all
Just tried it yesterday for the first time. I love it. Just that the music should be easier, add Bluetooth. We couldn’t get it to connect
That's great and all, but how does it do in extreme weather conditions?
Jake Price what do you think? If it can drive in sunshine it will drive just same in rain snow ice etc;)
the 2020s is going to be huge for self driving cars.
Great use of 360 video.
Amazing!
Pretty rad ! 👍🏽
Good job google 👏
Really impressive. Good job 👍👍
I live less than 5 mins from here! Downtown chandler! Love Waymo
I wonder if there will be any interesting news at SXSW? Maybe Austin test rides during SXSW or even a real public launch date for Phoenix (finally) would be nice.

This is just amazing
U N R E A L M A N !!
You need to test it on Indian Roads
Sweet AF... I love tech, and I'm loving this amazing tech... great job Waymo
Essential technology those who drive drinking their coffee and applying their eyeliner at the same time.
Waiting to see in India 😜😲😃😘😘
Next up use Hololens in cars and NS5 from I Robot!
NASA taught me never to trust science made with the imperial system of measurements... Lol.
Can't wait for the future ...amazing tech
That's insanely impressive !
I'd like to see this for the Accident cases. What went wrong and how it was addressed.
Waymo so cool
U guys should use the public cameras to make sure it safe like what’s going on
This is amazing. I love your products of Google.
What a great video!
that was cool as hell
Absolutely awesome
LOL, here after seeing Gate Smasher's AI video XD
Bring that Van to my house I need it to drive me from D.C to Cali while I eat and after take a nap thank you.
The question is when are we going to see the first consumer car build with hardware and software from waymo?
Loved it
Utterly amazing!
next level amazing video
When are you going to come to Texas?
I see them everywhere in SF, I'm so excited
Can't wait!
I'm ready to ride with this waymo system
Why did that dipship self driving car stop about 10 feet before the stop line at the beginning of the video?
I still like the idea though. A self driving car is a lot safer than a car driven by someone who is tired or pissed off.
very cool video..
Is waymo Self Drive sistem still working on wild traffic like Jakarta? We wait the video.
Amazing, thanks for sharing
This is so awesome
01:29 Cool. How far is "three football fields" in... you know, like... actual distance?
Steven Pam that is a measurement obviously ;)
A footbal field is 100 yards. X 3 = 300 yards = 900 feet.
End zone goal areas not included probably
It still amazes me how many measurements are explained in "Football Fields".
so, how far is 900 feet in... you know, like... actual units of measurement?
About three football fields.
Amazing experience
Cnt wait to start working at waymo.
Tbh this cool
Simply amazing.
Wasn't there a fatality in an auto-driven car crash not too long ago?
I knew Google would have the most advanced system. I remember my teacher talking about this in 2009 when I was a kid. It only makes sense they are the most advanced they've been doing it the longest.
Can we have more 360 videos like this?
All car drivers should get one, from dear motorcyclist
Interesting video, especially with the Spatial Sound feature I just found out about.
Imagine being a cop and pulling this car over for expired plates, only to find that there’s not anyone in the drivers seat.
love it!

The fuck is an "autonomous card"???
How do you tell it to stop at the next or nearest fast food resteraunt before going to final destination for a pit stop
