Back in the dirty ol’ Boston days (60s-90s), we didn’t go to Southie unless there was a festival, where the IRA had an ‘inconspicuous’ booth with pictures of Bobby Sands and rubber bullets. The Orange & Blue Lines south were off limits, unless going to Logan. Nothing romantic about it. It was a dangerous s-hole made famous by movies and tv shows. Respect to the real people who grew up there, loved it and still call it home.

I’m only 31 years old so vaguely remember how it used to be but it’s done a complete 180 since even 10 years ago. The rent is astronomical. Average is probably around $3,000-$3500 a month. Our company just finished building condos on West Broadway across from Capo and they all sold in a couple of days- minimum $990,000 for a 550 square foot studio. It’s insane that a million dollar condo is that small.
Yuppies ruin the sense of community, loyalty, solidarity, etc not just in Southie but all across the state and the country. Yeah I understand crime is down, but there is no more originality. Boston accents are going away. Im from the north shore and everyone I grew up with had some kind of accent. My teen daughter and her generation sound like every other kid on tiktok from wherever the fuck. I don’t know. I don’t like this new world man.

The best coffee in Southie is Sidewalk Cafe. 100x better than Dunks or Starbucks. If you live in Southie and haven’t been there- do yourself a favor and go. It’s legitimately the best coffee I’ve ever had anywhere.
