Now to be 100% honest. I have searched and searched, and this is the only video that I could comprehend on how to test the map sensor on my vehicle. 2 thumbs up!
Thanks for telling us the relationship between increased vacuum & decreasing multimeter reading. You the man!
I'm troubleshooting a high idle on my 93 Jimmy. This video was amazingly helpful! Thank you for posting such a valuable procedure. I was able to rule the MAP sensor out as a possible problem.
Well done for making a clear video and explaining things properly - Ive watched about 20 before this one and they were all incomprehensible!!
Thanks so much for doing these videos. I put 65 miles a day on my 2000 Saturn going to work. I need this kind of information to help me keep it in service. It has 160k on it and this stuff will start to need replacement soon.
Thank-you for a beautiful demonstration. I was working on a 09 Cobalt and when tested got a reference voltage of 3.8V to start with and also with ever 5 In vac applied it would drop .6V....Hence i replaced the Map sensor and it solved the surging issue. Thanks a lot RicH!
I am glad you car is running fine again.
richpin06a I have a 05 cobalt and I stalls while in traffic. Check engine light comes on and I have about 10 seconds to pull over or it comes to a stop where ever I'm at..the power steering locks up..I was told the cam shafts position sensor (had it replaced) then I was told to clean my map sensor...but I'm not trying to go another sensor or even go through the trouble if it's not the issue...can you help??
Thanks Rich! Great video as always. I could have used this a few weeks ago. Darn. Doesn't matter, just changed it out... was good enough for me.
For those interested, the Delphi Part Number is PS10075 for the second generation Saturns (like Richpin's).
I am thinking cluster or module but I do not have a enough time dealing with these car with the body control modules to know what happens when these modules go bad.
Most vehicles will read 1.0 to 1.5 volts at idle and 5.0 volts at wide open throttle.Have you checked the coolant temp sensor as a possible problem area.
Thank you Rich, your videos are excellent. Appreciate you taking the time to make them.
Is the EGR ok.
I have back probed my map sensor but I get 2.5 volts instead of 5. I checked all wires for obvious breaks and couldnt find anything. It may just be the map sensor because the voltage wouldnt move when I put a vaccum to it, and it wouldnt hold a vaccum. what would be my next step? Why would I only have 2.5 volts going to sensor?
I do not know why you are getting only 2.5 volts as the 5 volts comes from the computer to the map sensor.
Thanks for a great video!
Makes RUclips the place to go for things like this these days!
Good demo. You obviously know what you are doing!
Awesome video Rich and really appreciate your sharing. I learned something from someone and this is good.
So why does the engine surgi?
You said that what usually cause'es it, and you claim it shows working .
Please help me out here...
I have a 08 saturn outlook xe, that the service traction control, and stabilitrak light comes off and on, vehicle surges at idle bad
Thanks. I'll need to check a map sensor soon for my sisters car, I can use this video :)
My 2002 Saturn sl1 has an odd cluster problem. When it is cold outside my cluster will work but after about 10 minutes they gauges stop working. My turn signal light work and of course the check engine like is allways on.The odometer goes blank and gauges are stuck.I wouldn't think it would be a cluster problem sounds like around the engine proglem with heat.P.S. love the videos, grat job
Hi richpin06a, firstly thank you for this video. I wanted to know will this effect as to emmitting higher NOX. emmisions, everything is stock. Installed new-Magnaflow Cat,Denso OE 02Sensor, Denso Iridum spark plugs, Cap/Rotor, timing at 16btc,MSD ignition wires. The car has 116k when i purchased but in 2010 passed smog, now have a hard time getting the NOX lower. The only thing that is aftermarket is the exh.Header DC Carb legal. Can you help? Thanks again!
Hi,
I am testing my map sensor(TOYOTA COROLLA 1999)and the voltage with no vacuum is 3.6v. Does this mean it is faulty?
Got a Suzuki Swift 1.3L car. With Engine OFF, key ON I read 3.5V and at idle 1.5V. Are these nubers considered to be good? Car has low fuel milage, and poor engine performance. It is running rich, but has no CEL, no vacuum leaks, pre OBD II, failed emission test with high CO readings. O2 sensor is working right.
Yes. Checked the Coolant Temp. Sensor, the Intake Air Temp sensor, O2 sensor, TPS. They all tested good. Unfortunately no scan data available. Because if I could have Live Data Stream, I probably could find the problem. I can read those parameters and make a conclusion. But in this case I can only measure and test the sensors with a DVOM. And they look to be working perfectly fine. Except maybe the MAP sensor? I'll try to get a known good car, and compare. There is one, just need time to get it.
I am glad you found the video useful.
It could be because this map sensor is working properly and was showing 5.0 volts with no vacuum right were it should be.
hello,
thank you for for this video. i have a quick question for you: is the signal wire back to the computer always green? or is always the same position pin on connector? i have a 1996 nissan d21 pick up. thanks again for the excellent video!
So the lights work but fuel and temp gauges do not.
A bad map sensor can make the engine run rich how do the plugs look.
I check the voltage on the map sensor when troubleshooting.
Important Update: Jan 2013 there will be a new richpin channel for all future videos.Richpin06a channel will be mainly for all the Saturn lovers out there.Should be a lot of fun so stay tuned.
Why wouldn't the "check engine" light come on if the map sensor was failing?
Please keep making these videos!
@omarG19100 There are codes that will set like P0105,P0106,P0107,P0108 and P0109 if the map circuit malfunctions.
Did i ask if you checked the fuel pressure. If you had a scan tool it would be interesting to see what the short term fuel trim looks like.
@richpin06a, I have tested MAP sensor for a Corolla 99 , when I test and apply pressure the voltage increases instead of decrease.. and also when just tested ground and sensor wire it has a voltage of 4 volts instead of 5 v..
I don't know if all MAP sensor should decrease voltages or if some does the other way around.
do you think the plastic pressure tester pump would last for shop use?
@Yearonecamaro I think all map sensors work the same way they just have different connections
Hi not sure if you are still responding to comments on this video but i have a query. I tested my 3 bar MAP sensor on my 1991 sierra cosworth but when i connected my vacuum tester & tried putting a pressure in my MAP so i could check the voltage values it wouldnt hold a pressure at all, i take it that this means my sensor is shot. Thankyou in advance jason
I would think if it does not hold vacuum there is a good chance the sensor is faulty.
I tested my MAP sensor with a multimeter and vacuum pump and it was staying at a constant 5 v
I went and bought a new MAP sensor and tested it before I put it in the manifold and it still stayed at a constant 5 v
What are the possibilities of the MAP sensor being bad when it is brand new in the box.
sounds like you're on the wrong wire
Is this the same for 89 caprice 5.0v8?
i believe it is different.
richpin06a OK
@richpin06a can cleaning the area on the manifold where that hole is cause a negetive affect on the map sensor?
Where is MAP sensor located on 2001 Saturn SL2?
With the car in park have someone rev up the engine while you try to track down this noise or use the choke cleaner technique.Could be the intake manifold gasket.
Rich, if a MAP sensor is working properly, wouldn't a scanner live data reading of this sensor be able to tell you if you have a vacuum leak in your car? This seems like the most direct and obvious method of testing if you have a vacuum leak, but I don't see anyone using this as a trouble-shooting technique. Am I misunderstanding something and that there is a reason why the MAP sensor cannot be used for vacuum leak troubleshooting?
I think most people use the injector cleaner method because not everyone has a scan tool.
do all vehicles carry a map
so that was negative air pressure i guess? what if theres positive air pressure like a turbo or something, do stock maps see that or hows that work?
Other thing I thought about is maybe the timing belt jumped one cog. But it really just a long shot. Anyway, thank you for your answer.
Thank you very much for showing this procedure. It is so great that you took the time to show what you know and be straightforward about it.

=^.^=
@hp11208 NO! there are lots of diffrent ways to measure the air on an engine, just to mention some theres KV (karman vortex) MAF (mass air flow meter) and AFM (air flow meter, not mass).
@richpin06a ok now if the map was failing would the engine light show up, or you just have to go by the syntoms described?
@tangnatalaga whats can cause misfire on low rpm? could it be map sensor? i already clean it but it still didnt solve my problem. do i need a new placement or the problem could lies eles where?
Rich...i gotta question, now can a map sensor be fixed rather than getting a new one if so to diagnose the actual cause i should perform all the suggestions relating to a map sensor like for common symptoms. Trouble is mine does not function to its normal capacity...there is engine surge something that i notice but of course it runs on petrol the moment i try to switch to CNG/NGV is what its called around here the engine dies...need your advice
The map sensor is a sealed unit so i think it would be more trouble then it is worth trying to repair it relative to the cost of a replacement.
richpin06a thank you for the prompt reply Rich. Heck i better get this replaced then. Many tks
Does this apply to any vehicle that has a map sensor?
hi , would a bad map sensor make the car smoke
that's great ! really clear....hell you're wonderful man......keep this stuff going, thanks
richpin06a: I have just purchased Delco Map sensor for my 1998 SL1. It did not come with that red silicone seal. What is that called so I can order a new one on the net?
spiglator Try doing a search for GM map sensor seal.
Hey Rich I tested my Map sensor but I tested it in normal operation and let the motor be the vacuum pump. It tested ok just like the illustration in your video. Is this an okay way to test the sensor also?
Not unless you measure the vacuum of the motor. You have to use the vacuum pump like he does in the video.
Paul C ok thanks
The color of the signal wire will be a different color on ever make and the connector will be different.
I know this vid was made a while back but does Ford use a map sensor?
I tested mine and got close to 5v..like 4.76 then I blew into the hose and it went to 4.92 MAX..then back down to 4.76 is my map sensor bad?
youre not sposed to blow into the hose. youre sposed to pull air like a vacuum would. when you do this values will decrease
Thank you for the Info. I've got a ? My map sensor reads 4.72v and the engine doesn't run but the first thing is that the fuel pump went bad again, that has been replaced. I tried too start the engine, it run for a few seconds and shuts off, and the engine did surge and ate a lot of gas, can that low voltage being so low that it won't let the engine start?
A lot of fuel, were the plugs fouled.
richpin06a
Thanks
@p0rt0b0y Everyone loves to see richpin do map sensor testing....haha.
should the sens wire read any voltage while sensor is not attached to harness?? mine reads 5 volts out of sensor, does that mean I have a short? or is it normal?
victor saari the 5 volts is the voltage the ecu supplies to the sensor. So yes ,that is normal. There is a ground and a return signal voltage that changes depending on the amount of vacuum the sensor has applied to it. A total of 3 wires. The wire you probed was with the ignition turned to the on position I imagine
So how off does it need to be to cause problems. Mine reads 0.1 V too high. I'm at 3200 feet altitude which is approx 26.5 inHg which should read 4.3 V and my sensor reads 4.4 V. When I put it under vacuum it did fall approx 1 V per 5 inHg like in the video.
@richpin06a No, some EMS (Engine Management Systems) use MAFS (Mass Air Flow Sensor) instead of a MAP
Just what I needed.
thanks for the helpful video, unfortunately I found out the map sensor is not the cause of my engine flooding out issue I am having. Neither is the coolant temp sensor, oil pressure sensor. Its on a 5.7 k1500
@mets24able I would back probe the sensor on the voltage and signal wire to see what is going on.
Hey, Rich; love your Saturn videos. I have a '95 SL1 that surges and stalls, won't give any power when given gas. Starts about 5 minutes into my morning drive, and then stops 1-2 minutes later. Runs fine otherwise. The error I got this morning were the MAP and MAF errors- normally I don't get error codes. Any tips? Clean the MAP? Replace the MAF?
There is no maf, have you checked the map.
I have not, but if it runs fine 99% of the time, I'm uncertain if a MAP error is going to show up when I test it. But I have all the equipment in your video so I'll see! Thanks!
,,
thanks for the your video good information on how to check map
hi i just used my multimeter and the voltage is about 6.35. what could it be? my car is not running it just cranks.
@Charlesdylonbrown If you have that equipment yes you can.
@omarG19100 If the seal on the sensor is in good shape there shouldn't be a problem.
Nice video by Ray Ramano
Great video. Did you put the paperclip in the left or center pin on the plug. I got zero volts on the left and the correct readings on the center pin.
well the reason I'm asking is because the apexi neo works with the map sensor so you can change the way the map sensor is reading and working from inside the car.
where did you fix the ground black wire of multi meter
I believe the cleanest ground i could find was the bolt on the negative cable of the battery.
You have to test the wire that goes back to the computer.
I remember from school, when we messed with IC's, that all the computer stuff ran on 5 volts.
+jgstargazer Yup, the 5v from the ICs and the 5v from your car are no coincidence. Mostly all sensors, for a vehicle or otherwise, run gnd-5v as an analog reading, or 5v as a digital 1.
@hp11208 I believe all vehicles that have a computers have map sensors.
Can't you also read the Pressure reading off your scanner? I believe its the MAP that provides the pressure to the PCM.
Thank you! Very clear and helpful!
very nice thank you!
this is going to help me on my megasquirt installation...
Having a bad MAP sensor will not cause any damage to your car but it is good to replace it because the engine light is annoying
question a bad map sensor can make my Honda Accord 1999 stop when I Driving ?
@Josh211203 What if you don't have a wrench? I really don't think its reasonable to do much DIY auto repair today without purchasing at least a basic scanner. They're not too expensive and they can really be fundamental to diagnosing issues.
great video! Where did you buy your vacuum pump?
I believe Amazon had the best price.
Ok thanks!
this video really helpful...........
Good example of testing
this is great . thanks. some get way to technical on something so simple.
thank you very much sir, it,s been a great help.
Cool, thanks for the easy explanation!
Thanks for your very informative video.
Fanastic! Helped me so much
@tangnatalaga btw, 562boyz is me. i forgot to logon my account. im at library while replying to you and forgot to log off someone's account.
ill keep yoy updated once i get it fix thanks for the advice
I believe most do.
Normally not just rough running.
why wouldnt you use a code reader?
The only way i know is checking the output voltage.
while I went clicking on subscription button.....I saw 6 dislikes? what guys are you 6 aliens driving alien ships no MAP sensors right!......
Thanks for all your help, has anyone used the apexi neo?
Thank You 👍😎
The turn signals do work all the time but the odometer, and the gauges won't after about ten minutes of running. For days in a row now I have had no working gauges and no odometer, but the signals work.No gas, mph, tach, temp.and odometer.
