    Paul's considered one of rock's best and most innovative bassists. Just listen to his bass line on the Beatles song "Something," written and sung by George Harrison. It's so melodic it's practically a song in itself.

    • @MooneyHutch
      @MooneyHutch 3 года назад +11

    "Silly Love Songs" was a gigantic hit in the United States. It topped the charts at number one and went on to become the song of 1976. I heard it on the radio so often back then that I can still hear it playing in my head whenever I want to -- that bass line, the melody, those harmonies, the disco strings, the horn riffs. Even so, new things stand out to me when I listen to it now, like the piano section towards the end. The first vinyl record I ever bought was "Wings Greatest", a 1978 compilation album featuring several of the bands greatest hits, in large part because it included this song, but also because of "Band on the Run", "Live and Let Die", "Jet", and others.

    I always associate this song with my sixth grade class trip to Bob-Lo Island, an amusement park located in Canada. It was early June of 1976, and my classmates and I were on one of the Bob-Lo boats. These boats were old-fashioned paddle-wheel boats that sailed on the Detroit River from downtown Detroit to Bob-Lo Island. The trip took about two and a half hours. Many of my classmates and I were on the top deck of the boat just enjoying the sunshine and the warm summer breezes. Suddenly, over the PA system, this song came on, and the entire boat started dancing, my classmates and I, included. We started jumping up and down, singing this song, laughing, and just being care-free kids on a field trip. It was truly one of the most special moments of my life.

    This song is such a strange mix of hyped and sweet and sickly and insipid. What a trip! I see why it was/is such a hit. Thanks Paul, and thanks JV! Your commentary is amazing! It made me appreciate the music even more.

    I can’t speak for Sir Paul, but I think Linda was the love of his life. I can remember sympathetically feeling his pain when she passed even though I didn’t know that much about her. Whenever I see video of the two of them together, I think “that’s what love is”. RIP Linda and thanks for a lifetime of music Paul! Now more Wings!!

    The “people telling him not to write stuff like this” refers to John Lennon. This a riposte to Johns post Beatles dig at Paul for writing nothing but happy songs and not writing anything else but Yesterday in his song How Do You Sleep. Great song but nasty lyrics
    But is was an immeadiate reaction from John right after the Beatles broke up and John blamed Paul. They made up much later of course and were friends again
    Try Calico Sky by Paul for a love song

    • @topgazza
      @topgazza 3 года назад +5

      To be clear John announced to the band he was leaving but was persuaded to keep quiet until their last album was released. But then Paul jumped the gun and announced his leaving first. This pissed off John and hence the bitterness for a few years and the nasty, but brilliant, How Do You Sleep. Which essentially had a go at Paul for his actions and of course John’s narrow, because of his anger, view of Paul’s songwriting. He was wrong of course but by then the red mist was down
      Tense times

    • @skintrader100

      In an interview John claimed that he was hearing subtle digs at him in the early wings albums by Paul which led him to the “how do you sleep” song which John says was not so subtle.

      Paranoia reigned in those days between them. John suffered for a few years of the band with on and off writers block. Yet still produced some of most brilliant songs. Go figure. Paul has said he never consciously wrote any songs early on to prompt How Do You Sleep. On some studio out takes of the Beatles towards the end you can hear the track being rehearsed by John. The lyrics came later. It all ended very oddly
      I have a compilation of the songs John, Paul and George released on their first albums. Reduced to 12 tracks it makes for an astonishing and brilliant album. Especially as all the songs gestated during the last couple of years of the Beatles

      It’s a story with lots of nuances. But it has become pretty established by all the witnesses that Yoko poisoned Johns mind and fed his paranoia. John responded in that song with a dig at Linda “jump when your momma tell you anything” ouch. Sad but another fascinating part of their career

    This was written as a slap back kind of statement to critics and John Lennon, both of whom at various times dismissed Paul’s penchant for writing poppy love songs, which also happened to be enormous hits and connected to people who enjoyed music the pleasure and joy that music should be about. This song ended up being a huge, huge hit and made Paul’s point “what’s wrong with that?” Love Paul!

    This was said to be in response to John Lennon's remark about Paul McCartney writing too many silly love songs.
    But I always wondered if one of the people Paul was directing the "I love you" lines to was John Lennon. Gives the song a dual meaning that he still loves John like a brother no matter what.
    Check out "Live and Let Die" (Paul wrote this for the James Bond movie of the same name) and "Jet."

My mom used to take my sister and myself fishing often and no matter the day, in the way this song was on the radio. We called it our "fishing song". Mom would sing it and point at us that she loved us. I miss those days and miss mom also.
