  • In the 1850s, in what is now Victoria, Governor James Douglas fought against American expansionism by bringing over hundreds of Black Americans from San Francisco. The legacy of this population is still felt today.

This was great! The quality is high and you included a lot of information I didn't know.
If it was longer, I would have liked to see more about the racism they experienced. I sometimes feel it's historically inaccurate when its left out, because of how Victoria's Black pioneers are inaccurately portrayed in mainstream books and tourism. I was happy to see Dr. John Lutz was involved because I trust his research. Watch "History of Racism in Victoria" next if you have 5 minutes.

It's a little hard to believe James Douglas thought importing a group of uneducated farmers to Saanich and Salt Spring was meant to stave off American expansion on the mainland. After BC was declared in 1858, 150 Royal Engineers and British administrators did that job. Still, respect goes to all who made our history, regardless of background.
