- In this video I built a new NAS/VMHost box. I am very happy on how it turned out, much better than the terrible server I was running before.
FULL SYSTEM SPECS
---------------------------------------------------
CPU: 2x Xeon e5-2697v4
Motherboard: Supermicro X10DRI-T
RAM: 64gb ECC DDR4 @2133mhz
Storage: 5x Seagate Exos X18 16TB 7200rpm SATA HDD
OS: TrueNAS Scale (Might switch to Proxmox, not really liking TrueNAS at the moment)

Your setup is just a dream. Those servers and CRT's are so amazing! Looking at this feels like being in a lego shop in a childhood. Also nice to see Astolfo's doing great!
2:58 ok, I love your rice inspired in an old macoOS
That old server surprisingly looks like my r710. Old intel CPU, loads of shit DDR3 ram, no redundancy on the RAID array. Fun.
youre probably my favourite youtuber currently. keep doing your thing man
CRT Monitor FTW!
Dumb thing that you might want to check out. The NVidia drivers are broken for the 900 series on linux. The fan will not ramp up. So the gpu will gladly slap the thermal limit.
sick rack man, hoping to see your phone shenanigans in the future!
Always embrace the jank!
Ngl but this is Moore better than my own server. I have my HP ProLiant ML110 G6 and is just full of recycled HDDs too from my school but everything I got is for free so for free server with 6x SATA ports and silly Pentium inside is fine as NAS and for upgrading it one day I will just buy whole new server but I don't have money so yeah (and I am limited by 100MBit switches I own)
you're everything I wanna be
Unraid is my one of choice
Glad I found your channel, man. I feel like we would be kindred spirits.
what's the name of the mac theme on your desktop?
QTStep Classic I think
bro used windwos as aserver and linux as a desktop, who is this dude?
Give unraid a look.
>arch linux
>astolfo on desk
yep certified linux user
the amount of storage for funni astolfo content is amazing.
love the fuck out of this channel, glad i found my niche of ppl who like retro hardware and femboys and vaporwave, what a time to be alive
Hell ya
Love your setup and personality dude, really entertaining. Such a vibe to watch keep making videos plox
Femboy spotted
the femboy would notice the other femboy there. like a damm magnet, like things attract
@1:52 based figurine
EVGA PSUs are pretty bad. I had problems with many of them, Supernova G3, BRs... I just buy Corsair now because they just work.
12:18 lol
The crt monitor on the 360 was nostalgic.
Thank you RUclips algorithm for showing me this channel. Immediately subbed
i laughed cos u used torrents from sukebei XD
You should get one of those new 386sx computers
from my calculations multi-core perfomrnace of dual E5-2697 V4s should be 10% higher than I9-12900K
sickk. keep the videos rolling
this mobo is a dream, I built my daily pc with it, e5-2699v3, 128gb of ram to work on some network virtualization, 1tb ssd + 1tb hdd with vmware esxi (with more than 5 vm's), dual lan, pcie x8 wifi/bluetooth card and a beautiful gtx 1080ti. I can literally do anything with this system, and much cheaper than a modern pc with modern components
now my question is, WHERE DI YOU FREACKING GET THAT CASE!!!! I NEED ONE FOR MY BUILD AND I STILL CAN'T FIND ONE FOR CHEAP :((((
i made a server with a budget and its really complicated my specs are gtx 1050, intel corei5 2400 24gb of ddr3 btw love ur videos
I've always been interested in networking and server stuff because it looks technical and cool to learn, but never built anything.
Love it. Did you tell us build cost?? I can't wait to do an upgrade like this. I'm on a Dell r330 Xeon server. :(
How much did all that cost you?? I ended up getting three servers and some rams sticks and a bunch of Xeon processors but the servers are proliant gen 8. Would I still be able to run them for storage like cloud storage or are they too old to be usable today??
A 10 hard drive NAS in raid 0 is honestly insane lol.
you have every component to build the exact same spec pc that im currently using rn lol, i7-4790, 16gb, gtx 980. too bad my psu is top notch garbage, shuts off when a very specific load is applied.
A server must have a redundant power supply.
H110ds With Amd Epyc 7554 Is Rocks
Did u ever setup proxmox? I love it for my Homelab.
what DE are you using dude? that looks sick
That figure is everywhere lmao
what is your power consumption with dual cpu?
The reason it didn't work with the first PSU is the whole configuration uses more than 850W. Without counting the chipset and all other controllers on the motherboard, an approximate configuration would require around 720W of power. And this server would probably run on twin 1000W PSUs for both load balancing and redundancy.
if the server turns on with that psu, that’s even worse because that would mean the psu doesn’t have protection. the server refusing to turn on is actually a good thing and shows how good the power supply is.
@@satokotsu True. God bless EVGA
noob question: why do you need a gpu in a server / nas?
Just a thing that i stumbled upon in several truenas forums. You are probably using RAIDZ1 which is not really reconmended at a larger disk scale because rebuild timings are super long when a disk fails and if another one fails while rebuilding your data is lost. So if you have a decent backup its probably fine but if not i would consider adding another hdd for redundancy in RAIDZ2 atleast. Otherwise great video :)
Bro's server about taxi down the runway and take off.
fans sounds like a formula 1 ferrari v10
11:07 i couldn't tell that from your pfp
Wath opersting system you use in the server?
What VM Software do you use?
Got the same CPU as you (not a dual socket sadly) been pretty good I host a few personal services on it and its been solid. Need to do a ram upgrade but other than that its good.
bro what linux distro is that? I want it!!!
That thing sounds like a fighter jet taking off 💀
Holy shit that old server is a fucking hooptie.
Well done! In my opinion, everybody should use such a server.
And your videos are very entertaining!
No way bro uses MacOS 9
6:01 sega saturn
DAWG WHAT IS UP WITH THOSE FANS
yummy storage :3
nice build!
what’s the power draw for your server?
what is the powerdraw when in use?
I had a similar set up with a 70w single Xeon on a dual supermicro board, 256G of ram, and a few hard drives just to test. After the first month i had to scrap it because it was using a STUPID amount of power when i was streaming from plex. Now i use a laptop with dual external 3.5 enclosures and i get the same speeds as before because of the 1gb bottleneck.
nice, can you make some videos about the freepbx and the cisco phones? also have some cisco phones... but never works well also with sip firmware and freepbx :-/
hi alstolfo
hey
Bro really said, "Power consumption, never met him."
But fr this build is awesome, I wish I had something half as baller
Absolutely love the videos how do you record with a phone harness for pov and tripod, been wanting to start a channel like this for a while
nice torrents
I didn't understand anything, but great video very cool
My NAS has duct tape all over it. Hey, at least all my drives are the same model.
are you using KDE desktop environment ?
having a home lab is essential for anyone who enjoys tech.
The Algorithm has chosen you!
This is MASSIVE
I like how he uses an old CRT monitor to test his server.
Old LCD monitors are everywhere these days. I've got two just shoved in my cupboard. I've got one on my desk, which I found on the fucking street. They are cheaper, lighter, and probably more reliable than those huge CRT monitors.
That means this guy either went out of his way to hunt down an old CRT monitor, or he held onto his, while most normal people were throwing theirs out. Or maybe he found one dumped outside someone's house 15 years ago, and hauled the fucking thing home, just as I did with the aforementioned monitor on my left. Who knows?
Either way, that's the monitor he reaches for when he wants to test that server. He has an LCD monitor in his data cabinet, and (I think) two more on the floor in front of it. If I could be bothered to rewatch the video, I'd probably find 10 more, _easily_. And yet he goes with the big, heavy, power hungry CRT that's probably old enough to drink by now.
I don't know why he does this, but I like the dedication. This must be the coolest channel on RUclips, and this sort of thing is one of the main reasons for this.
Is that... is that °duct tape° !??
good ol super micro
Lada 101 is better than any American car at its time special for it's price
what case is that
Nice !
great video
ok
I'm really happy RUclips recommended me your channel as I'm really enjoying all the videos. This is a great one!
In case you didn't know you can use the yellow sata ports to power a Satadom (or as supermicro likes to call them, superdoms). Just an FYI in case you didn't know. Could use them to boot an OS and save from using any of your spinning drives or separate boot disks.
I personally just finished building a server using a X11DPH-T board. Supermicro hardware is pretty great, I'm personally a fan.
I hope to see more videos in the future! Love that you're exploring older technology and playing games on original hardware- huge kudos to your effort in getting it all running.
You should try running FreeBSD somewhere. Have fun!
Hearing server fans ramp up in my ear Is the best thing i have ever heard🥲
