Man, these updates really coincided with my own work on my first record, and somehow the topic at hand really resonated with whatever was going on in my project. I felt composition was easiest, then performance, with all the improvisation and whatnot, with finally the mixing and mastering, being something very new to me, the most challenging. So tinkering with it for months and months, which ultimely lead to a "good enough" state for me, i feel like it is ok to not have the best "sounding", loudest record, but rather to have something that showcases the ideas in an honest and transparent way. I am proud of the compositions, arrangements, performances, and very ok with the mix and master, which is the best i could muster that being my first project of such magnitude - and i feel like that acceptance is very much derived from this updates series, so thank you, Devin; you are a wonderful human being!

(Although all those things would be great.) I sense a level of anxiety in you about the importance of this music and I just want to let you know that no matter what you choose to do with it, no matter what the people suggest, no matter if it goes viral, if it's what's in your heart and you expressed that with intent and clearly, it is by default: beautiful and great. I'm looking forward to hearing Power Nerd when it is ready to be released. Having been involved in creative endeavours, I can relate to the period of readjustment after calling a work done. Melancholic. I have more of a technical question, if you get around to it. Given how broad many voices can be, how do you balance frequencies around a voice such that the voice isn't lost in the mix? Do you allow yourself to cut or lower some frequencies of the voice to accommodate it?
Two thoughts randomly entered my head earlier today. One was I hadn't seen this 1980s white honda accord hatchback in over a year, and thought it was scrapped. I saw it driving along the road a few hours later. I haven't clicked on a Devin video in awhile, but I wondered if he was still recording in Dolby Atmos, and what an extra amount of challenges that must be. Then this video randomly appeared in my feed. Aside from my little synchronicities, I have tremendous admiration for his pursuit of art, and choosing methods that can't be easy on himself.
I very much appreciate the idea of a "not special" protagonist... I agree that it can make a story or an album much more relatable. Also, it can feel a bit lighter (without compromising depth) if a character is not special and super-human and a hero and all serious. Some of my favourite novels have that kind of protagonist (e.g., Hans Castorp in Thomas Mann's Magic Mountain, who is "mediocre in every regard"). It happens to feel less cliche and ... lighter, in a good way ... I lack a better word to describe it. Looking so much forward to hear more updates and also to hear more of Supernerd! Love your work

Hey Dev. Bro, I appreciate your raw honesty in these updates, it's refreshing to hear a perspective that isn't just the typical band update marketing hype type stuff. If I'm honest I can relate with your sense of neurosis and doubts. I'm a music production student and music's primary purpose for me has always been one rooted in catharsis or some kind of therapeutic thing which isn't particularly explored within the setting of studying a degree in production. I was never allowed to explore music education as a child and thus I have some sense of imposter syndrome being in a specialized music uni. Nor have I ever felt I belong in a band on stage. I basically rip you off sometimes and talk shit playing ambient guitar for people in video chats and sometimes it turns into something of a pseudo therapy session for whoever I'm talking to in another part of the world. Sometimes they're in a hellish corner of the Earth I couldn't imagine living in. I've just finished year two of uni and fought through a brutal workload and like your experience of finishing Powernerd, I feel I crashed at the end and am levelling out now as well as going sober after relying on smoking weed for the past decade and I feel great for it, the brain fog is clearing. My question is this: I imagine you've had many fans thank you and they've told you your work's helped them through a great deal. Does this ever play on your mind? And if so how do you process that scale of emotional investment in what you do? I find myself crying sometimes because the thank yous I've recieved doing what I do are so heart wrenching and heavy after hearing some of these peoples stories. I can't wrap my head around that these people unlock themselves emotionally to me when I'm just an idiot on the internet with a guitar in a fish tank. Especially the ones coming from people living under extreme conditions like war and poverty, regardless of faction or religion. I only discovered you just after the Pandemic and we met on your Lightwork tour in Wolverhampton for a moment. I said you flipped music on its head for me and I'm incredibly grateful to have discovered your work and perspectives. Rah appreciate you bro, you're a different kinda cat. Do you transcend into a strong leader that people look to to draw strength and direction? Its a lifestyle more so than art. When you perform thats the sense I get from your music. You do it in a relatable way able to not take yourself overly serious. Do you ever think, I dont hear anyone in my area of music with a comparable voice? If I was to guess, I would say it's a combination of what's possible with the label, and his vision for the album. But also, a lot of musicians tend to write way more than they will use and pick the best stuff to work with. So that 3 hours is probably 50, if not more songs.
Just curious. I was always under the impression that The Moth was so Epic that it would shatter a double album. Like a 2-3 hour opus or stage production. So I was shocked to hear that it was that short given that he said he has three hours worth of music. Not complaining. Just surprised.

I find myself crying sometimes because the thank yous I've recieved doing what I do are so heart wrenching and heavy after hearing some of these peoples stories. I can't wrap my head around that these people unlock themselves emotionally to me when I'm just an idiot on the internet with a guitar in a fish tank. Especially the ones coming from people living under extreme conditions like war and poverty, regardless of faction or religion.
I only discovered you just after the Pandemic and we met on your Lightwork tour in Wolverhampton for a moment. I said you flipped music on its head for me and I'm incredibly grateful to have discovered your work and perspectives. Rah appreciate you bro, you're a different kinda cat. Do you transcend into a strong leader that people look to to draw strength and direction? Its a lifestyle more so than art. When you perform thats the sense I get from your music. You do it in a relatable way able to not take yourself overly serious. Do you ever think, I dont hear anyone in my area of music with a comparable voice? What do you tell yourself to get back down to earth?

If I was to guess, I would say it's a combination of what's possible with the label, and his vision for the album.
But also, a lot of musicians tend to write way more than they will use and pick the best stuff to work with.
So that 3 hours is probably 50, if not more songs.
Just curious. I was always under the impression that The Moth was so Epic that it would shatter a double album. Like a 2-3 hour opus or stage production. So I was shocked to hear that it was that short given that he said he has three hours worth of music. Not complaining. Just surprised.
