This was originally sung by the legendary K.L. Sehgal in the movie Zindagi 1940, later by Lata Mangeshkar in her tribute album Shraddhanjali. The singing here is not even remotely comparable to those versions. He is rushing through the song, his effort in the long note of 'kya' in 'kya jadu hain' is showing. But I am happy that he chose this song. The new generation listening to this will hopefully search for the original song and discover K.L. Saigal, the great singer (as well as actor) and the first superstar of the Hindi film industry. The music was composed by another musical stalwart of the time Pankaj Mullick.

It is totally unfair of you to have drawn a comparison between Javed Ali on the one hand and KL Saigal and Lata on the other. They are legends, while he is contemporary. By making a comparison, you have stolen his moment of glory! This version has its own charm and this man has a beautiful voice! His training shows! Immense performance this!!
He has his unique style. What is wrong in experimenting. Is there a rule that one should stick on to old? Increasing the tempo and singing shows his immense talent. Not achievable by everyone who sings. Learn to appreciate that.

Got very good command on raagdaari hindustani (vocal) sangeet..His rendering of Saigal's great song (mai kyaa janoo), albeit with excessive modulations is acceptable as a tribute to the legendary singer. KL Saigal never sang with those modern instruments like jaaz or drums. The drum beats accompanying the song is a complete distraction. A simple melodious sound of tabla and harmonium would have done more justice to the song..However, the inaugural "alaap" of Yaman Raag is deeply refreshing..
