Every time I hear him I get teary-eyed. We lost him and Cass far too early. I'm just glad I'm old enough (67) to have been young when we had this incredible music.
John was about to quit the music industry until Peter, Paul, & Mary did a cover of this and it became a hit. If it wasn't for that we might not of ever heard of John.
John wrote this fantastic song. Cass got her harmony skills with the Mamas & Pappas. This is a great timeless song. Actually Peter, Paul & Mary had a big hit with this in 1969.
Midnight Special was a great showcase for current talent. *AND* it kept us teens from breaking curfew because we didn’t want to miss the show! It was (usually) worth getting home ‘on time’ to watch!
Never heard the whole intro to this. Mama Cass's message about voting is how we all should view it today. Respect. Huge fan of JD from those days. That's huge rabbit hole to be explored. That 12 string!
Really? Just came home from the bar, now you make me cry again lol! At 68, I miss John alot, Momma Cass too! Prayers to everyone from Northern Michigan!
The Midnight Special was a must see for me starting in 1974. John Denver and Mama Cass together is priceless. This was live as were most all of the performances on the show. No auto tune or backing tracks to mime to, just fantastic voices.
Cass had one of the most beautiful voices that you could pair her with anyone and you’d get a gem! Without her, I don’t believe the Mamas and the Papas would have had such great songs. I would love to see more reactions with Cass whether it be solo or the mamas and the papas! Love to see you react to “Monday Monday” (group) or “Dream a little dream of me” (solo)
Cass was a powerful singer with a voice like no other. I always thought the Mommas and Poppas would have been nothing without her. A big influence on music at that period in time.
Both masters of their craft. Cass Elliott is a class act. She was holding back here. If she really opened up, she would have overpowered John but she respected his territory. You might want to review Cass performing with Tom Jones. It will bring a huuuge smile to your face!
Two superbly talented people gone too early. To hear some of the artists back in the day talk about Cass's influence on the "California Sound" is enlightening. She brought people together. I saw John Denver live in 1980. An artist I loved then and have only grown fonder of since.
Peter, Paul and Mary did a cover of "Leaving on a Jet Plane" in 1969, that became a #1 hit. Both that & this one have incredible vocals to compliment a beautiful song.
All right my brother Stephen.... Although the camera angle is different at times, when John is singing he's right up to the mic. And when Cass and John sing together, they're like equally apart from the microphone as it stands right in the middle of them. When two separate sound waves come together like this, one vocalist does not drown out the other vocalist. These harmonies are called and or dubbed "dyfonics", which I've learned about when I lived in California in the mid-80s from a vocal professor/mentor, Brandon Bayless. 💯🔥🎸🎤😁👍🏻
@setonhillstudios Great Song. Her sister Leah Kunkel just died in November, She was also a singer and raised Mama Cass's daughter after she died. Cass's daughter just wrote a book about her mother's life. *My Mama, Cass: A Memoir by Owen Elliot-Kugell* where she dispels the stories and rumors about her mother's death
This song will always make me think of my mom. Whenever my dad would be sent overseas and we couldn't go with him she would sit and play this song over and over while crying. Check out his Country Roads.
Just a note on the staging... Cass backing away on the line "Oh Babe , I hate to go" is magical. Also a small observation on social history, Cass' version has "I'll wear your wedding ring." But in John's version, he sings "I'll bring your wedding ring."
Were you even alive in 1972? I was 5. Don't remember much about Cass Elliott.. But I do remember singing John Denver songs with my older sister washing dishes.. My sister will be gone 10 yrs in April... It's so hard to believe she's been gone that long.. I miss her so much.. my one and only sibling.. she passed at 51 way too young.
Awesome reaction 👏🏼👍🏼 Yeah MA'AM CASS she was in the group called MAMAS & THE PAPAS they were a two guy two girl singing group a couple they're hit songs were 🔥MONDAY MONDAY🔥 and the one I really like is 🔥CALIFORNIA DREAMIN🔥 and they're Harmony's was just off the charts good as a quartet and they are definitely worth checking out but this was an awesome duet together it's a classic and as far as JOHN DENVER he's just awesome dude awesome singer an awesome writer and just a good folk singer no doubt about it but anyway Keep up the good work 💪🏼👍🏼 🇺🇸🫡🙏🏽❤️✌🏽🌹🔥😎👌🏼
I was 12 years old and the decade had just started. This was a sample of how great the rest of the 70's music decade would bring. I can tell that you would have fit right in and lived to ve around back then.
Cass really didn't care for being called "Mama Cass" especially after she left the group. Wish John and Cass did perform more together since their voices seem to be made for each for each. Look for more of Cass guest starring on other tv shows and when she was on her own.
Your so right Seton Hills...Cass Elliot was so humble and appreciating of the moment of being on stage with John Denver. By this time she was firmly against the war in Vietnam and became an activist for the Democratic cause. Her voice is both powerful and controlled and harmonised with John Denver on this performance. John Denver is indeed a poet, and yes you are spot on with his magical ability to tell a story that draws you in, it compels you to listen to his musicality which is so naturally brilliant. There is a video of John Denver and Johnny Clash dueting. I think the setting is a small farm or ranch singing "Take me Home Country Road" For me the ease at which John Denver blends his voice with Johnny Cash is staggering. I think it's his ability to make it look so easy that it draws you in. Not the best quality but unique between two legends. Great reaction. Thanks
Unlike today's celebrities, she didn't try to sway anybody by her own candidate or put down somebody for not having the same views. She was respectful of each person's right to have their own feelings. I love that!
This song was really popular in the 70s when soldiers were leaving for deployment to the scary parts of the world. The line "don't know when I'll be back again" just hits a different way in that situation.
I agree with everything you said !about this performance ! Please do THANK GOD IM A COUNTY BOY LIVE by John Denver, w/ Jonny Cash and Glen Cambell and Roger Miller. 1977 march 22
This was written by a very young John Denver, who was then a member of the Chad Mitchell Trio before beginning his solo career in the 1970s. Denver wrote this in 1967 during a layover at Washington airport, "Not so much from feeling that way for someone, but from the longing of having someone to love." The Chad Mitchell Trio recorded the song that year, as did Spanky & Our Gang and Peter, Paul and Mary. It only became a hit when the latter act covered the song again two years later.
No, no, she no longer wanted to be called “Mama” Cass. Mamas and Papas broke up in 1968 which was the same year Cass released her first solo album, “Dream a Little Dream”; plus, she signed on to headline at Caesar’s Palace out in Vegas, a three-week engagement at $40,000 a week, two shows a night. Pretty cool! So sad she left her little girl, Owen, the child she’d always longed for, behind. She suffered a heart attack. There were no drugs in her system, she did not choke on a ham sandwich like the cruel and ridiculous rumor that went around. She had a young daughter that meant the world to her, that she looked forward to seeing grow up. So sad!
I was 6 years old when this song aired and I loved John Denver and The Mamas and The Papas as well! I saw this on The Midnight Special as a re-run years later and still loved it so much. I used to know and sing all of John Denver's popular songs at a young age and this was one of them. Thanks so much Steve!
John Denver did quite a lot of duets! John got his major start as part of the Chad Mitchell Trio, so his ability to sing with others is top notch! Other duets include "Fly Away" with Olivia Newton-John, "Perhaps Love" with opera singer Placido Domingo, "Love Again" with French singer Sylvie Vartan, and of course with the Muppets! My 2 favorite single songs from John is "Poems, Prayers, and Promises" and "Shanghai Breezes." Also, "Leaving on a Jet Plane" went to #1 with the group Peter, Paul, and Mary! Peter Yarrow of the group just passed away this week. Please give them a listen!
Alice and I met when I was in the Army and she was volunteering in a Catholic version of the USO. Soon I was off to serve in Korea. Over the years this became our song as we parted over and over again. We've been married 52 years now. This song still brings a tear to my eye.
This was BEAUTIFUL! Thank you Steven! This is your subscriber from Down Under! LOVE your channel! LOVE John Denver and Cass Elliott! Cass did a song called Make your own kind of music! It is AMAZING! It’s my favourite of hers! Thank you again! Peace and Blessings to you and your family from Australia.
Linda Ronstadt and Glen Campbell Live on his TV show with a duet of "Going to Carolina in My Mind" by James Taylor. Or John Denver and Tom Jones doing "Going to Carolina in My Mind".
The ultimate wholesome image (well, except for maybe the Osmonds, LOL),,anyhow, it is all about the voice and the lyrics and he is up on the mountain top with just a handful of top singer/songwriters of my era, the 70s in particular. I will mention a few...Neil Diamond, Beer Gees, James Taylor, Carole King, Hary Chapin, Jim Croce...so many great ones in my era. John is absolutely up there with all of them, Period. End of story. I adore all of them, adore all of 'em. but I have a special place in my heart for John. His Poems, Prayers and Promises nails me to the wall emotionally every time. So does Fly Away with the angelic ONJ in the background. God bless you, John, RIP!!! And to Cass Elliot as well. Her voice is one of the outstanding vocalists of her generation (60s and 70s)
You are so correct! The 70s was a great era of music. There were so many amazing bands. I love the t-shirt that says: "I may be old but I got to see the really good bands." I can so relate!
You should check out John's live rendition of his song Calypso during his Wildlife Concert. The tune is a tribute to the French ocean explorer and conservationist Jacques Cousteau and his research ship, the Calypso. Not only is the song a beautiful composition but it also showcases John's wonderful skills as a composer, instrumentalist, and vocalist.
My mom, listened to both John & Cass, as I was growing up. But since this is long before VHS or streaming, I've never seen it, so that was a nice treat. Funny little time capsule moment for me - this was recorded 1 year and 1 day, before I was born. That was a fun little look into the world in 1972. Another great Mama Cass duet, is of her and John Davidson. From The John Davidson Show, March 1, 1970 - Mama Cass & John Davidson, singing "Something Stupid" (made popular by Frank & Nancy Sinatra, 1967) It's a great duet! I hope you check it out with us. Take care & stay safe, Steven. 🤙🏼
If you want to hear how far John Denver would go to make a point about how he felt about the conservation of nature and the environment, I suggest you listen to CALYPSO. He wrote and performed this song in honor of Jacques Cousteau and ended up being used as the theme song for the exploration specials known as THE UNDERSEA WORLD OF JACQUES COUSTEAU. The Calypso was the name of the ship that was used for ocean exploration and research.
I was 9 years old when this aired and while I do not remember seeing this at the time, I did have parents who loved music, be it 50s music from my mother's era, to outlaw country, which was my dad's favorite, so I grew up listening to these two talented performers. I think John Denver has the purest, most angelic make voice ever and I am envious that my husband saw him in concert. I really hope you react to Calypso next (my favorite JD song). If you do, please react to the video, not just the lyric version. Thanks for yet another great reaction!
In 1980 John Denver single handedly Changed the state song of West Virginia from the Green hills of West Virginia, to Almost heaven in one performance at WVU stadium.
Henry John Deutschendorf Jr. was from a g\German family. Though ie was about the 3rd generation born in America, like the Japanese who had been here for generations, the American Govt. came to his families farm and confiscated their guns which were essential for hunting during WWll. John had not yet been born but that heart breaking event was a source of grief for a long time and John carried a lot of that hurt. On a brighter note, his dan was an Airforce pilot trainer. He wanted to be a pilot but was too tall so he trained his entire career. He was the first person to break the sound barrier, if you know about that. John is greatly missed.
Love that video. Austin trying every flavor on the Starbucks' menu. Of course, they nailed the musical experience and once again, you forget they have no instruments.
I was watching this beautiful performance on Saturday Night, and as an ABBA fan I tried to find some kind of curiosity The first is that ABBA was a quartet, like "The Mamas and The Papas" before it, of which Cass Elliot was one of its members They never coincided in time, because ABBA was formed in 1972, after the dissolution of The Mamas & The Papas in 1971 Also, conceptually, The Mamas & The Papas are very North American and ABBA are very European This performance is in 1972, and it is precisely the unofficial beginning of ABBA with their first song in English They appear on a Swedish TV show and sing their first song "People need love" (you can find this historic video on RUclips) ABBA has a rare appearance on that Saturday Night show when they performed two songs in November 1975: "Waterloo" and "S.O.S." Years later in 1979 ABBA will coincide with John Denver (and 8 other artists) in the Concert for UNICEF all the artists donated royalties from a song, and ABBA donated their premiere of "Chiquitita" which was a smash hit in the Hispanic American market, even more so when ABBA recorded it in Spanish all the artists at the beginning of the TV special introduced themselves singing a chorus of a song, or they were chained together, the last one was from ABBA (to which all the artists join) and it is precisely a song from 1972, their second single in Sweden: "He is your brother" (also You can found it in RUclips) and I hope for a future reaction from you to ABBA I have seen with joy that the video with the most views on your channel is precisely from ABBA with "The winner takes it all" which is already approaching 100,000 views in just five months and then you did only "Gimme gimme gimme (a man after midnight)" more than four months ago, wich have more than 25.000 views and is in your Top40 with more views My suggestions are "Dancing Queen" (1976) their biggest worldwide hit or the already mentioned "Chiquitita" (1979) especially look for the video when they premiere it at UNICEF or their first worldwide hit, the iconic "Waterloo" (1974) and especially the video of their historic live performance when they win Eurovision 1974 in Brighton UK Best regards from Buenos Aires, Argentina South America
It was so sad that he died in a plane crash. I associate this song to that, but it is such a beautiful song. Thank you, Stephen for such a great reaction.

Such a beautiful performance between two LEGENDS! An amazing a piece of history!
Steven, if you like John Denver, check out " Back Home Again," the Wildlife live version
No pitch correction needed! Just pure talent.
Every time I hear him I get teary-eyed. We lost him and Cass far too early. I'm just glad I'm old enough (67) to have been young when we had this incredible music.
Yup I'm 63 I think we were born at the perfect time for music truly blessed 💗🙏
John was about to quit the music industry until Peter, Paul, & Mary did a cover of this and it became a hit. If it wasn't for that we might not of ever heard of John.
This was John Denver's first hit even before "Country Roads". He wrote this song, but Peter, Paul, and Mary had the hit with it before John did.
“He was born in the Summer of his 27th year, coming home to a place he’d never been before…” just some brilliant writing.
Cass Elliot
DREAM A LITTLE DREAM

Midnight Special was a must see each week for us back in the day
John wrote this fantastic song. Cass got her harmony skills with the Mamas & Pappas. This is a great timeless song. Actually Peter, Paul & Mary had a big hit with this in 1969.
Yes, Cass Elliot had a beautiful voice and heart. Gone way too soon. Same as John.😢
Midnight Special was a great showcase for current talent. *AND* it kept us teens from breaking curfew because we didn’t want to miss the show! It was (usually) worth getting home ‘on time’ to watch!
She is called Mamma Cass because she was in the group The Mannas and Papas
Watching John always makes me tear up. 😢 His lovely voice is so missed. Cass Eliot was also a great singer.
John wrote this beautiful song, but was a hit for Peter, Paul, and Mary
Never heard the whole intro to this. Mama Cass's message about voting is how we all should view it today. Respect. Huge fan of JD from those days. That's huge rabbit hole to be explored. That 12 string!

Both masters of their craft. Cass Elliott is a class act. She was holding back here. If she really opened up, she would have overpowered John but she respected his territory. You might want to review Cass performing with Tom Jones. It will bring a huuuge smile to your face!
Next do Cass Elliot’s “Dream a Little Dream of Me.”
Yes, please! 🙌
I remember on The Smothers Brothers show, she sang that to Tom Smothers....a cute skit with Cass's amazing voice.
Peter Yarrow died a few days ago so it would be lovely to see a reaction to one of their songs
I think you'll love 'Sunshine On My Shoulders' by him
All right my brother Stephen.... Although the camera angle is different at times, when John is singing he's right up to the mic. And when Cass and John sing together, they're like equally apart from the microphone as it stands right in the middle of them. I love the loudest metal bands and rock songs but this performance really moves me especially when I see the date 1972. 😎
I sure do miss both of these artists. Midnight special was something I looked forward to every week.
The harmony is epic
@setonhillstudios Great Song. Her sister Leah Kunkel just died in November, She was also a singer and raised Mama Cass's daughter after she died.
Cass's daughter just wrote a book about her mother's life. *My Mama, Cass: A Memoir by Owen Elliot-Kugell* where she dispels the stories and rumors about her mother's death
this song came from Mr. Denver' s song writing back to when he sang with the folk group Mitchell Trio . Fantastic song that got my attention as a kid
So lucky to have this one-off performance forever. You tube is great.
What a treat here love you
Cass Eliot live on TV doing "Make Your Own Kind of Music" is absolutely wonderful.
that is a great suggestion.
RIP John and Cass 🙏

Raw model for a crisp pop voice always recognizable
She hated being called Mama Cass. Thank you for listing her as her proper name. ❤
Just beautiful. That's all. ✌❤

Two great singers and a beautiful song......absolute perfection.

One of my favorite Jd songs.
But this is next level.
He always sounded better live.
She is the perfect voice for him.
In the live Janis Joplin performance at Monterey Pop, Cass was the woman in the audience they panned to looking amazed.
John Denver, poems and prayers and promises. Oh man! And you’re right this song is beautiful.
This was a big hit for Peter Paul and Mary a few years previously.❤🎉😊
@@BillVoss-u2j yes! But it was written by John Denver!

Oh cool! Appreciate the info! 😁
Also worth reacting to JD with Placido Domingo singing 'Perhaps Love"
Stephen, you comment on the greatest music artist with such a positive vibe.... You Rule my friend.
Truly appreciate it! 🤘🏻❤️
Got to see him in the round in ‘77! Incredible! Yeah he was a great songwriter too! 🤘🔥

Yes...Mama Cass Elliot of "The Momas And The Papas".
In 1980 John Denver single handedly Changed the state song of West Virginia from the Green hills of West Virginia, to Almost heaven in one performance at WVU stadium.
That was wholesome.
Let's Gooo! Her voice is incredible. Check out Dreamweaver from Gary Wright 😀 Great reaction and Peace out Steven 🙏 ☮️ ✌️
Home Free covers a John Denver song called Thank God I'm a Country Boy. The video is great. Thanks for playing great music.
Love that video. Austin trying every flavor on the Starbucks' menu. Of course, they nailed the musical experience and once again, you forget they have no instruments.
Must listen to Brad Paisley - " Waiting on a Woman "
I was watching this beautiful performance on Saturday Night, and as an ABBA fan I tried to find some kind of curiosity
The first is that ABBA was a quartet, like "The Mamas and The Papas" before it, of which Cass Elliot was one of its members
They never coincided in time, because ABBA was formed in 1972, after the dissolution of The Mamas & The Papas in 1971
Also, conceptually, The Mamas & The Papas are very North American and ABBA are very European
This performance is in 1972, and it is precisely the unofficial beginning of ABBA with their first song in English
They appear on a Swedish TV show and sing their first song "People need love"
(you can find this historic video on RUclips)
ABBA has a rare appearance on that Saturday Night show when they performed two songs in November 1975:
"Waterloo" and "S.O.S."
Years later in 1979 ABBA will coincide with John Denver (and 8 other artists) in the Concert for UNICEF
all the artists donated royalties from a song, and ABBA donated their premiere of "Chiquitita" which was a smash hit in the Hispanic American market, even more so when ABBA recorded it in Spanish
all the artists at the beginning of the TV special introduced themselves singing a chorus of a song, or they were chained together, the last one was from ABBA (to which all the artists join) and it is precisely a song from 1972, their second single in Sweden: "He is your brother"
(also You can found it in RUclips)
and I hope for a future reaction from you to ABBA
I have seen with joy that the video with the most views on your channel is precisely from ABBA with
"The winner takes it all" which is already approaching 100,000 views in just five months
and then you did only
"Gimme gimme gimme (a man after midnight)" more than four months ago, wich have more than 25.000 views and is in your Top40 with more views
My suggestions are
"Dancing Queen" (1976)
their biggest worldwide hit
or the already mentioned "Chiquitita" (1979) especially look for the video when they premiere it at UNICEF
or their first worldwide hit, the iconic "Waterloo" (1974)
and especially the video of their historic live performance when they win Eurovision 1974 in Brighton UK

Mama Cass had a Beautiful Voice, she died so young, around 35
She was 32.
This song is about a guy who got drafted in the Vietnam war and it’s about him saying goodbye
It's about him and his touring musician lifestyle,
Correct not about the war but was about the separation that comes with air travel and him touring
It was so sad that he died in a plane crash. I associate this song to that, but it is such a beautiful song. Thank you, Stephen for such a great reaction.
His glider crashed...not a plane crash.
@@andreaschmall5560 Wasn't it an ultralight plane?
@@andreaschmall5560 sorry I mistyped
@@dbradx An ultralight plane can be considered a glider if it is unpowered and I believe it was unpowered. Anyway... it was a crash either way.
