- Snap, crackle, pop. Hear the finish cracks happening on today's episode of ‘In The Shop’, as Joe demonstrates how to create ‘finish checking’ on his continued restoration of a 1951 Gibson J-185.

The intended use of these cans is to provide air (not really air) pressure which is the by product of a liquid propelent that expands at a certain rate inside the can...similar to butane, or propane, creating a gas under pressure inside the can.
When you invert the can...you get this liquid propellent which is very cold.
There you have it.
Another use which i do often when using hot glue, is give it a quick blast from the inverted can to cool the hot glue very quickly.
Kind of like an accelerator with ca glue.
You have to heat with a hair dryer, then spray, and repeat for best effect. It's the extreme temperature differences that cause the cracks.
Just wanted to suggest/ask about this option. Making the temperature variation more extreme should be more effective. I have never used this technique but will definitely experiment with it soon.
Maybe On electric solid body, I think on an acoustic you run the risk of the body warping an going out of shape due to the thin structure. With extreme cold an heat.
Oh, THIS IS GREAT, thanks for the video and the idea. you picked up a new subscriber. Question: How do we undo checking ? I have a black 1952 Singer sewing machine model 301. The bed is checked, very small, but very many cracks. I think it's shellac but I haven't tested it yet, , ,many say lacquer, many say shellac, and most of both think that lacquer and shellac are the same thing. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks again.
May I ask you, what is that ‘yellow/orange” nitro finish color? It’s gorgeous! Thanks. Really well done..
Thanks Joe
If you apply a heating pad localized to where you're spraying the cold spray & just alternate back & forth, I wonder if your checking would look even better? Idk, I'm just thinking that may work better because once you've sprayed the cold spray onto the finish & your making that part of the finish good & cold. If then you apply concentrated heat pad. You may get much better results. I think I may try it on a crappy guitar one day just to see for my self.
great video. Would the extreme temps effect the glue holding it together? Specifically Tite-bond
If doing this on the top, do you worry about screwing up anything structural (braces etc)?
Would it be possible to glue a piece of the same kind of wood under the original bridge? To keep it original? Or is that too much? Just curious, I'm by no means a Luthier. 😯
Great video. I'm planning to get lacquer checking on a road worn 60s neck I have, do you think I could leave it in the freezer for an hour and then hit it with a hair dryer?
I bet if you would heat up the lacquer with a hair dryer or heat gun and hit it while it’s hot it would go crazy.. unless you think it would somehow damage the wood
😂 you need heat! 😂😂😂
I accidentally left my guitar in my car after a gig, but I don't know if the finish got damaged or not because someone broke into my car and stole it. I never did that again...😀
😂😂
Will this work on a poly type finish,I stumbled on this by accident..I previously was thinking of cold then heat( it's for a sg special 1963 copy I'm aging for wall hanger and home use.....thnx for sharing..
It only works on nitrocellulose
No.... Sorry.
Don’t you need a face protection? Isn’t that stuff toxic?
@@scottlaurenceguitarist yes to spray, need a good quality gas mask and well ventilated area
You have to rewarm between spraying for the best effect. Using a heat gun first, then the freezing spray makes for more crackling!
Watch out what you say though: I heard Kellog's can have men in black suits and sunglasses at your shop in no time! Those guy's have been known to break a few knee caps!🤪
Try’s it it doesn’t work the shows you something else
like listening to Bob Ross
