- Winchester Cathedral was built in 1079 on a raft of logs on a peat bog. However, in the early 1900s, the cathedral started to sink slowly into the ground, which consisted of peat.
When huge cracks started to appear in the early 1900s, the Cathedral seemed in danger of complete collapse.
It was diver William Walker who carried out repairs on the foundations of the cathedral to stop it from sinking into the ground.
He had to descend into the murky water of 235 pits, each about 6m (20ft) deep, to dig out rotten foundations and shore up the walls with concrete.
From 1906, Walker laboured under water below the Cathedral for six hours a day in complete darkness, because the sediment suspended in the water was impenetrable to light.
It took him six years to excavate the flooded trenches and fill them with bags of concrete.
I live close to Winchester Cathedral and though I have no religious beliefs/do not see any gods in our universe, I can say that the world is a better place for the amazing sight of the cathedral at Winchester and it would not be here for the brave efforts of the man in the video. I am glad he put all that work in, so I and others can enjoy this magnificent building for centuries to come.
Salute to Sir William Walker for saving Winchester Cathedral.... 👏👏👏
