I read a comment where the person stated that they wanted to move to Ghana but because of corruption they've changed their mind. My question is that is there any country that Is corruption free? It so which country is it? Listen here in my opinion, every single country has some form of corruption, what you need to do is be wise, do your research have documentation on every transactions you've made with the other person, also make it legal through the court system, don't do side deals with no one. By doing so, you will not be taking advantage off.

No but there are countries that only function on corruption and they are all in Africa. That’s why the only jobs are for business executives. Show me where an entire village in Africa can go to work every day and support a family. 3/4 of our motherland don’t have running water and flushing toilets. They don’t have sewer systems to take waist away. Western countries and very North Africa has that but sub-Saharan is as advanced as the Old Testament

Many other countries had wars and invasions as well and they still moved forward. I am ashamed to say we use that as an excuse because the corrupt want us to believe it because it keeps the corruption to continue without having to answer for it and the people have nothing to show for it. Maybe electricity one day maybe not the next still in 2023

As a Ghanaian American this makes me sad but I'm glad Akua is brave enough to tell her story. Hopefully, it reaches many people who have romanticized living in Ghana. It will always be a part of me, but family members, friends, and I have lost a lot to bad deals, people disappearing and everything in between. One of the programmes I mourn for, is Kwame Nkrumah's MASS EDUCATION PRIGRAMME.
In the 1950s and 60s, important information was shared with the general public. Today, with all the radio and television stations, public education should be a lot easier.
When people do not understand or teach our history, they will not truly welcome our brothers and sisters who are returning home after so many hundreds of years.
We should NOT see them as strangers but as our own family returning home.
Sadly, honesty and integrity are lacking in some people, but let us continue to push through.

I had a nightmare time in Ghana, including three attempts on my life, after completing the building of a property in Accra. I’d been visiting Ghana since 1998. People thought I had money and decided the best way forward would be to kill me. I am also of Jamaican birth living in London. I left Ghana and those who tried to harm me moved into my property. It was a very protracted process, but after about 3 years of trying to find an honest Ghanaian lawyer to fight my case, I got my day in court. It took 8 years, but I got my property back and sold it at a massive loss to an Englishman. I’ve travelled all over Africa, but I will never again invest a penny anywhere on the continent, as there appears to be no infrastructure to support diaspora peoples trying to settle there. I can’t believe this is still happening to people. So wrong! I lost around £60k but I’m alive and well and continue to travel the world.

There were some Ghanaian villagers who were jealous of the sisters and didn’t want them to live there. They wanted their land but the sisters fought hard as they could to stay there , won their case in court and keep their land. One day,two male Ghanaian villagers attacked and murdered the sisters. The men had poisoned their dogs prior to killing the sisters.Jeanette Salters was 75 and her sister was 60. They loved Africa and was hoping for to live the rest of their lives there.Your experience sounded similar to the sisters.

Lessons to learn from this lady’s story: Never pay money to any Real estate developer when you have not seen the house completed in Ghana. You have to go and see the house as completed and have a walk through then get a real estate lawyer to go through all the paper work and explain it to you before you make payment. When it comes to the payments, never give them all the amount . Ask for a payment plan. There were a lot of mistakes this lady made by trusting the UK office . I was getting my hair cut and on this occasion me and my barber got into conversation about buying property back home, he was from ghana I'm from dominica, I was telling him I would love to invest in my home country, start with some property and maybe a resuratent later down the line, he rebutted my idea and told me straight "listen for 12 years I've been cutting hair saving my money and sending it back home to ghana to build a property!" he then showed me some pictures of an unfinished and abandoned project, prior to this he grew suspicious years before, & had his wife look in to it as she was an accounting graduate to calculate the cost of the property, building materials and labour, and how long it should of taken to finish the project, turns out he had exceeded in the tens of thousands! his own uncle was taking money and putting it in his own pocket and every year had an excuse for why construction either came to a halt or stalled. he told me to never invest in your home country your home is where you sleep! and you'll never have a good nights sleep knowing someone is stealing from you especially your own blood.

Hello brothers and sisters! This video is a very good channel to show how real Africa works...I myself am a Afro-Brazilian who decided to start a new life in Angola (also an official Portuguese speaking country like mine) and I got frustrated when I realized that corruption is the norm when it comes to business over there. The best way for you to do trustful business in Africa is through trustable people you have already known on the ground because the companies in the private sector are involved in corruption with connections to people that represent the law and order. Maybe I am being not fair to the entire Africa because I don´t know all the 54 countries of the continent, but I have some experience on Angola, particularly on its capital city, Luanda. I came back to Brazil and I am still interested in living in Angola, but if I go back there again, my mindset will be completely different of the former one, when I was too romantic about living in Africa.

I don't now why people think buying land is so free of problems in the US,Uk etc. If you don't follow proper procedures in buying land anywhere in the world more than likely you will get scammed. Even with proper procedures you can still get beaten out of your land or home in the US. In Pennsylvania someone offered to sell my family land that he did not own. In another situation someone I know thought they had bought 100 acres of land. What they didn't know was that 30 acres were ensconced in other's land without any access to it. So they really had 70 acres. I know of another situation in which a mortgage company failed to pay the bank the full mortgage even though the owners paid in full. Soon 50% of the property was auctioned off because property taxes were not paid. The owners assumed the bank was paying the taxes. It was only pure luck that the owners found out four years later that they no longer owned 50% of their property. If five years had gone buy they would not have had any way to get their and back. I recall another case in which the nw owner was given the wrong place to send his payments. If her had not caught it he would have lost his land even though remade all his payments on time. All of this happened in the US.

The secret is get to know the country you've decided to settle in, visit it several times, seek friends from native returnees and diaspora who've settled there as they'll be more knowledgeable and be able to advise if a venture is a scam. I recently purchased a home in Jamaica and it was no easy feat being a foreigner. I was blessed to have a support of natives that are "on the ground " and honest people who came highly recommended. No shade to anyone, but as an outsider with no real knowledge of another country's laws, a good lawyer is worth her rate in spades. A very heart breaking story😥. As a real estate broker, I really wish she had gone through the document she signed and made sure that she gets compensated in event of any delay. From my experience with Ghanaian developers, most of them try to complete their buildings within 24 months. Some stay within this time line but as I said, provision should be made in the contract signed. They may omit it just so they have that freedom but it's up to the buyer to insist. One thing buyers don't know is that they can edit the contract agreement where needed. If they would not budge then move to another developer.

Patricia This woman’s ordeal is not a reflection of what goes on in America. Black people (or any other group) in America are not systematically running land and real estate scams on one another here. Nor is any other group. In those infrequent instances where anyone tries to defraud you, we have systems in place to hold people accountable. Judges are not in bed with local officials. In general, we do not detect a foreign accent and then proceed to take advantage of people based on that accent. When have you heard of a Black American selling an African immigrant land under fraudulent circumstances, and if he or she did, not being held to account?
What happens to African Americans in Ghana and Africa, is part of a cultural mindset, cultural practices. Even with the issues we have among one another in America, this is not one of them.

Sad to hear this....as a child growing up in the West Indies in the 70's, it was common to hear some people say, that they wanted to return to the Motherland. Africa would be the salve to wash away the memories of ancestors who arrived on the islands to become slaves. A small percentage of the freed generations longed for their ancestral home....they wanted to return to their "Roots". Nothing wrong with that sentiment....but....I think, many people constructed a Utopian country in their minds eye. Therein laid one of the first obstacles. The need to belong somewhere, clouded some people's judgement. Upon arriving in Africa, many of the people I knew, were immediately struck by how different everything was, the inner workings of the country were not what they expected, it was a rude awakening to say the least. Some made a go of it because they had sold, lock, stock and barrel to get to Africa and others abandoned the dream and came to realize that home is wherever you hang your hat. Moral of the story...." you may look like me and I may look like you but that is where the likeness ends".....people are people the world over. Opportunists exist everywhere!

I eventually decided against it and went for a different developper who was more expensive but the location was better and even though they delivered a few months late but, they were in contact throughout with regards to progress, etc. The quality of their finish was also good.
As for this other developper ( the one I think she used) , a friend went with them last year, as they are cheaper but he too has to deal with the fact that they will not deliver this year as promised, but they keep telling clients that they will complete on time. It's the deception I can't stand!

This is very sad, and I can identify with her in so many ways, because I too was born in UK, and I might be a little bit older than her, but I am from that generation. We were brought up in a UK where even though the white people didn't' particularly like us, if you signed upon the dotted line, and were given expectations or a contract, things were done decently, in order, on time, and all above board. So she took a lot of things at face value, she went into her Home purchase in good faith. She expected that within reasons things would be done as they said they would be done, it is not unusual for there to be delays in a Building project, but usually you are going to be given accurate explanations, restitution and compensation when necessary. She had every right to back out of the Contract. I don't know if things have changed in the UK, but just a general observation of her character leads me to believe that she is a person of her word. It's bad enough when White people betray us and rip us off, but when it's your own Black people, it hurts especially hard. I am sorry she experienced this, and while this may be common in Ghana, I still chose to believe that it is not a hard fast rule, I believe that there are many people in Ghana who conduct their business with integrity, and professionalism. Perhaps she should have gotten more information about who she was dealing with, prior to making a financial commitment, but I doubt if there would have been much difference. There are two kinds of people in this world, there are the givers and the takers, my dear Sister, was taken., and the Takers can usually spot a giver a thousand miles away.

@@HoneySuckle123 because people in America and the UK think the grass is greener when it’s not. Ghana has food their niche in “welcoming people back” to explore their roots. So many people are desperate for peace not knowing it’s hell on earth when you touch down in most of these African countries trying to do business. She clear stated that being lockdown during COVID isn’t what she wanted for herself mentally and emotionally.

Same stories in Haiti 🇭🇹. It’s sad because so many people want to invest in their home country but there is so much corruption on every level. It’s not the US where you can take them to court even the police and judges don’t care about you; you live and learn. God bless this woman and may she receive seven folds.

They want 300k for houses etc. It makes no sense. A judge even tried to kill a man to steal his house. Sometimes just enjoy where you are, because some people want to live amongst nature and their people, but it's not possible

This is sad to listen..Akua weldone to bring your case up to educate people who want to take this path. You have gone through nonsense from so called builders to their lawyers. I believe perhaps these people will pay back the pain you have gone through. Be strong sister Akua.

    This is ridiculous.
I'm pained by Akua's vulnerability and experience and this is never acceptable.
I think the name of that real estate company must be mentioned so innocent people like Akua don't fall victims in their hands. What a shame 😔 !!
